Hadron production in elementary nucleon-nucleon reactions from low to ultra-relativistic energies

We study the hadron production in $p+p$, $p+n$ and $n+n$ reactions within the microscopic Parton-Hadron-Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach in comparison to PYTHIA 8.2. We discuss the details of the "PHSD tune" of the Lund string model (realized by event generators FRITIOF and PYTHIA) in the vacuum (as in $N+N$ collisions) as well as its in-medium modifications relevant for heavy-ion collisions where a hot and dense matter is produced. We compare the results of PHSD and PYTHIA 8.2 (default version) for the excitation function of hadron multiplicities as well as differential rapidity $y$, transverse momentum $p_T$ and $x_F$ distributions in $p+p$, $p+n$ and $n+n$ reactions with the existing experimental data in the energy range $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.7 - 7000$ GeV. We discuss the production mechanisms of hadrons and the role of final state interactions (FSI) due to the hadronic rescattering. We also show the influence of the possible quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formation on hadronic observables in $p+p$ collisions at LHC energies. We stress the importance of developing a reliable event generator for elementary reactions from low to ultra-relativistic energies in view of actual and upcoming heavy-ion experiments.

Parton-Hadron-Quantum-Molecular Dynamics (PHQMD) -- A Novel Microscopic N-Body Transport Approach for Heavy-Ion Collisions, Dynamical Cluster Formation and Hypernuclei Production

Cluster and hypernuclei production in heavy-ion collisions is presently under active experimental and theoretical investigation. Since clusters are weekly bound objects, their production is very sensitive to the dynamical evolution of the system and its interactions. The theoretical description of cluster formation is related to the n-body problem. Here we present the novel n-body dynamical transport approach PHQMD (Parton-Hadron-Quantum-Molecular Dynamics) which is designed to provide a microscopic description of nuclear cluster and hypernucleus formation as well as of general particle production in heavy-ion reactions at relativistic energies. In difference to the coalescence or statistical models, often used for the cluster formation, in PHQMD clusters are formed dynamically due to the interactions between baryons described on a basis of Quantum Molecular Dynamics (QMD)which allows to propagate the n-body Wigner density and n-body correlations in phase-space, essential for the cluster formation. The clusters are identified by the MST (Minimum Spanning Tree) or the SACA ('Simulated Annealing Cluster Algorithm') algorithm which finds the most bound configuration of nucleons and clusters. Collisions among hadrons as well as Quark-Gluon-Plasma formation and parton dynamics in PHQMD are treated in the same way as in the established PHSD (Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics)transport approach. In order to verify our approach with respect to the general dynamics we present here the first PHQMD results for general 'bulk' observables such as rapidity distributions and transverse mass spectra for hadrons ($π, K, \bar K, p, \bar p, Λ, \bar Λ$) from SIS to RHIC energies. We find a good description of the 'bulk' dynamics which allows us to proceed with the results on cluster production, including hypernuclei.

A new review of excitation functions of hadron production in $pp$ collisions in the NICA energy range

Data on hadron multiplicities from inelastic proton-proton interactions in the energy range of the NICA collider have been compiled. The compilation includes recent results from the NA61/SHINE and NA49 experiments at the CERN SPS accelerator. New parameterizations for excitation functions of mean multiplicities $\left<π^{\pm}\right>$, $\left<K^{\pm}\right>$, $\left<K^{0}_S\right>$, $\left<Λ\right>$, $\left<p\right>$, $\left<\bar{p}\right>$ are obtained in the region of collision energies $3<\sqrt{s_{NN}}<31$ GeV. The energy dependence of the particle yields, as well as variation of rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are discussed. A standalone algorithm for hadron phase space generation in pp collisions is suggested and compared to model predictions using an example of the PHQMD generator.

HERAFitter, Open Source QCD Fit Project

HERAFitter is an open-source package that provides a framework for the determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton and for many different kinds of analyses in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). It encodes results from a wide range of experimental measurements in lepton-proton deep inelastic scattering and proton-proton (proton-antiproton) collisions at hadron colliders. These are complemented with a variety of theoretical options for calculating PDF-dependent cross section predictions corresponding to the measurements. The framework covers a large number of the existing methods and schemes used for PDF determination. The data and theoretical predictions are brought together through numerous methodological options for carrying out PDF fits and plotting tools to help visualise the results. While primarily based on the approach of collinear factorisation, HERAFitter also provides facilities for fits of dipole models and transverse-momentum dependent PDFs. The package can be used to study the impact of new precise measurements from hadron colliders. This paper describes the general structure of HERAFitter and its wide choice of options.

Measurement of event-by-event transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations using strongly intensive measures $Δ[P_T, N]$ and $Σ[P_T, N]$ in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron

Results from the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS are presented on event-by-event transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations of charged particles, produced at forward rapidities in central Pb+Pb interactions at beam momenta 20$A$, 30$A$, 40$A$, 80$A$, and 158$A$ GeV/c, as well as in systems of different size ($p+p$, C+C, Si+Si, and Pb+Pb) at 158$A$ GeV/c. This publication extends the previous NA49 measurements of the strongly intensive measure $Φ_{p_T}$ by a study of the recently proposed strongly intensive measures of fluctuations $Δ[P_T, N]$ and $Σ[P_T, N]$. In the explored kinematic region transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations show no significant energy dependence in the SPS energy range. However, a remarkable system size dependence is observed for both $Δ[P_T, N]$ and $Σ[P_T, N]$, with the largest values measured in peripheral Pb+Pb interactions. The results are compared with NA61/SHINE measurements in $p+p$ collisions, as well as with predictions of the UrQMD and EPOS models.

Update of the MCSANC Monte Carlo Integrator, v.1.20

This article presents new features of the MCSANC v.1.20 program, a Monte Carlo tool for calculation of the next-to-leading order electroweak and QCD corrections to various Standard Model processes. The extensions concern implementation of Drell--Yan-like processes and include a systematic treatment of the photon-induced contribution in proton--proton collisions and electroweak corrections beyond NLO approximation. There are also technical improvements such as calculation of the forward-backward asymmetry for the neutral current Drell--Yan process. The updated code is suitable for studies of the effects due to EW and QCD radiative corrections to Drell--Yan (and several other) processes at the LHC and for forthcoming high energy proton--proton colliders.

Parton distribution functions at LO, NLO and NNLO with correlated uncertainties between orders

Sets of parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton are reported for the leading (LO), next-to-leading (NLO) and next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) QCD calculations. The parton distribution functions are determined with the HERAFitter program using the data from the HERA experiments and preserving correlations between uncertainties for the LO, NLO and NNLO PDF sets. The sets are used to study cross-section ratios and their uncertainties when calculated at different orders in QCD. A reduction of the overall theoretical uncertainty is observed if correlations between the PDF sets are taken into account for the ratio of $WW$ di-boson to $Z$ boson production cross sections at the LHC.

Inclusive production of protons, anti-protons, neutrons, deuterons and tritons in p+C collisions at 158 GeV/c beam momentum

The production of protons, anti-protons, neutrons, deuterons and tritons in minimum bias p+C interactions is studied using a sample of 385 734 inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. The data cover a phase space area ranging from 0 to 1.9 GeV/c in transverse momentum and in Feynman x from -0.80 to 0.95 for protons, from -0.2 to 0.4 for anti-protons and from 0.2 to 0.95 for neutrons. Existing data in the far backward hemisphere are used to extend the coverage for protons and light nuclear fragments into the region of intranuclear cascading. The use of corresponding data sets obtained in hadron-proton collisions with the same detector allows for the detailed analysis and model-independent separation of the three principle components of hadronization in p+C interactions, namely projectile fragmentation, target fragmentation of participant nucleons and intranuclear cascading.

Phase-space dependence of particle-ratio fluctuations in Pb+Pb collisions from 20A to 158A GeV beam energy

A novel approach, the identity method, was used for particle identification and the study of fluctuations of particle yield ratios in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). This procedure allows to unfold the moments of the unknown multiplicity distributions of protons (p), kaons (K), pions ($π$) and electrons (e). Using these moments the excitation function of the fluctuation measure $ν_{\text{\text{dyn}}}$[A,B] was measured, with A and B denoting different particle types. The obtained energy dependence of $ν_{\text{dyn}}$ agrees with previously published NA49 results on the related measure $σ_{\text{dyn}}$. Moreover, $ν_{\text{dyn}}$ was found to depend on the phase space coverage for [K,p] and [K,$π$] pairs. This feature most likely explains the reported differences between measurements of NA49 and those of STAR in central Au+Au collisions.

SANC system and its applications for LHC

The {\tt SANC} computer system is aimed at support of analytic and numeric calculations for experiments at colliders. The system is reviewed briefly. Recent results on high-precision description of the Drell-Yan processes at the LHC are presented. Special attention is paid to the evaluation of higher order final-state QED corrections to the single $W$ and $Z$ boson production processes. A new Monte Carlo integrator {\tt mcsanc} suited for description of a series of high-energy physics processes at the one-loop precision level is presented.

Proton -- Lambda Correlations in Central Pb+Pb Collisions at sqrt(s_{NN}) = 17.3 GeV

The momentum correlation between protons and lambda particles emitted from central Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_{NN}) = 17.3 GeV was studied by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. A clear enhancement is observed for small relative momenta (q_{inv} < 0.2 GeV). By fitting a theoretical model, which uses the strong interaction between the proton and the lambda in a given pair, to the measured data a value for the effective source size is deduced. Assuming a static Gaussian source distribution we derive an effective radius parameter of R_G = 3.02 \pm 0.20$(stat.)^{+0.44}_{-0.16}(syst.) fm.

Standard SANC modules for NLO QCD Radiative Corrections to Single-top Production

It this paper we present the results obtained with the newly created Standard SANC modules for calculation of the NLO QCD corrections to single top production processes in s and t channels at the partonic level, as well as top-decays. The main aim of these results is to prove the correct work of modules. A comprehensive comparison with results of the CompHEP system is given, where possible. These modules are intended to be used in Monte Carlo generators for single top production processes at the LHC. As in our recent paper, devoted to the electroweak corrections to these processes, we study the regularization of the top-legs associated infrared divergences with aid of the complex mass of the top quark. A comparison of QCD corrections with those computed by the conventional method is presented both for top production and decays. For s channel production we give an analytic proof of equivalence of the two methods in the limit of low top width.

Electroweak Radiative Corrections to Single-top Production

Radiative corrections to the single top s and t channel production processes are revisited. Complete one-loop electroweak corrections are calculated within the SANC system. New is a study of the regularisation of the top-legs associated infrared divergences with aid of the complex mass of the top quark. A comparison of these electroweak corrections with those computed by the conventional method is presented both for top production and decays. Standard FORM and FORTRAN SANC modules are created. These modules are compiled into a package sanc_cc_v1.40, which may be downloaded from SANC project homepages. Many numerical results are presented at the partonic level with the aim to demonstrate the correct working of modules. These modules are intended to be used in Monte Carlo generators for single top production at the LHC. Where possible, we compare our results with those existing in the literature; in particular, a comprehensive comparison with results of the CompHEP system is given.

Inclusive production of charged kaons in p+p collisions at 158 GeV/c beam momentum and a new evaluation of the energy dependence of kaon production up to collider energies

New data on the production of charged kaons in p+p interactions are presented. The data come from a sample of 4.8 million inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. The kaons are identified by energy loss in a large TPC tracking system. Inclusive invariant cross sections are obtained in intervals from 0 to 1.7 GeV/c in transverse momentum and from 0 to 0.5 in Feynman x. Using these data as a reference, a new evaluation of the energy dependence of kaon production, including neutral kaons, is conducted over a range from 3 GeV to p+anti-p collider energies.

Inclusive production of protons, anti-protons and neutrons in p+p collisions at 158 GeV/c beam momentum

New data on the production of protons, anti-protons and neutrons in p+p interactions are presented. The data come from a sample of 4.8 million inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. The charged baryons are identified by energy loss measurement in a large TPC tracking system. Neutrons are detected in a forward hadronic calorimeter. Inclusive invariant cross sections are obtained in intervals from 0 to 1.9 GeV/c (0 to 1.5 GeV/c) in transverse momentum and from -0.05 to 0.95 (-0.05 to 0.4) in Feynman x for protons (anti-protons), respectively. pT integrated neutron cross sections are given in the interval from 0.1 to 0.9 in Feynman x. The data are compared to a wide sample of existing results in the SPS and ISR energy ranges as well as to proton and neutron measurements from HERA and RHIC.

J_AW,WA functions in Passarino-Veltman reduction

In this paper we continue to study a special class of Passarino-Veltman functions J arising at the reduction of infrared divergent box diagrams. We describe a procedure of separation of two types of singularities, infrared and mass singularities, which are absorbed in simple C0 functions. The infrared divergences of C0's can be regularized then by any method: photon mass, dimensionally or by the width of an unstable particle. Functions J, in turn, are represented as certain linear combinations of the standard D0 and C0 Passarino-Veltman functions. The former are free of both types of singularities and are expressed as explicit and compact linear combinations of logarithms and dilogarithm functions. We present extensive comparisons of numerical results with those obtained with the aid of the LoopTools package.

NLO QCD corrections to Drell-Yan processes in the SANC framework

NLO QCD corrections to charged and neutral current Drell-Yan processes and their implementation in the computer system SANC are considered. On the partonic level both quark-antiquark and quark-gluon scattering channels are taken into account. Subtractions of the collinear singularities in the massive case are compared with ones in the MS-bar scheme. Results of SANC on the hadronic level are presented. Comparison with results of the MCFM package is shown.

SANCnews: top decays in QCD and EW sectors

In this paper we present the results of the implementation of the decay t -> b f1 f1 into the SANC system (f1 is a massless fermion). The new aspect of the work is the combination of QCD and EW corrections. All calculations are done at the one-loop level in the Standard Model. We give a detailed account of the new procedure - the forming of a class of JAW,WA functions. These functions are related to the procedure of extraction of infra-red and mass-shell singular divergences. The emphasis of this paper is on the presentation of numerical results for various approaches: complete one-loop calculations and different versions of pole approximations.
