Observation of correlated plasmons in low-valence nickelates

The discovery of nickelate superconductors has opened a new arena for studying the behavior of correlated electron liquids that give rise to unconventional superconductivity. While critical information about a material's charge dynamics is encoded in its plasmons, collective modes of the electron gas, these excitations have not yet been observed in nickelate materials. Here, we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to detect plasmons in the metallic, low-valence nickelate Pr4Ni3O8. Although qualitatively similar to those in cuprates, the nickelate plasmons are more heavily damped and have a lower velocity than those in a cuprate at comparable doping, which we attribute to reduced electronic hopping and enhanced screening of the long-range Coulomb interactions. Furthermore, the plasmons in Pr4Ni3O8 soften with increasing temperature, in contrast to the cuprate, where plasmons remain at nearly fixed energy but become more strongly damped. Taken together, these results reveal a distinct charge-screening landscape in nickelates and place quantitative constraints on analogies to cuprates.

Stability of the Local Ni$^{2+}$ Electronic Structure to $A$-site Disorder in the Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet NaCaNi$_2$F$_7$

NaCaNi$_2$F$_7$ is a unique example of spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice, but the presence of Na$^{1+}$/Ca$^{2+}$ $A$-site disorder complicates the local electronic and magnetic environment of the Ni$^{2+}$ $B$-site. We utilize resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) to study the influence of $A$-site disorder on the $B$-site electronic structure of NaCaNi$_2$F$_7$. Ni L-edge RIXS measurements reveal a Ni$^{2+}$ electronic structure in nearly ideal octahedral coordination, with only a small trigonal compression ($δ$ = -200$\;$meV) required to capture all spectral features. Within the $D_{3d}$ symmetry of the Ni local environment, we extract an anisotropic $g$-factor of $g_{\parallel} = 2.26$ and $g_{\perp} = 2.27$, and a corresponding paramagnetic moment of $μ_{\rm{eff}}=3.2\;μ_B$. To simulate disorder, RIXS spectra were calculated with realistic distributions of crystal field parameters; however, these spectra are invariant relative to a disorder-free model, demonstrating the robustness of the Ni$^{2+}$ electronic environment to the $A$-site disorder, within the resolution of our measurement.

Electronic structure of the frustrated diamond lattice magnet NiRh$_2$O$_4$

The $A$-site spinel NiRh$_2$O$_4$ is the only known realization of a spin-1 diamond lattice magnet and is predicted to host unconventional magnetic phenomena driven by frustrated nearest and next-nearest neighbor exchange as well as orbital degeneracy. Previous works found no sign of magnetic order but found a gapped dispersive magnetic excitation indicating a possible valence bond magnetic ground state. However, the presence of many competing low energy degrees of freedom and limited empirical microscopic constraints complicates further analysis. Here, we carry out resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to characterize the local electronic structure of NiRh$_2$O$_4$. The RIXS data can be partly described by a single-ion model for tetrahedrally coordinated Ni$^{2+}$ and indicates a tetragonal distortion $Δt_2\!=\!70$ meV that splits the $t_2$ orbitals into a high energy orbital singlet and lower energy orbital doublet. We identify features of the RIXS spectra that are consistent with a Rh-Ni two-site excitation indicating strong metal-metal hybridization mediated by oxygen in NiRh$_2$O$_4$. We also identify signatures of electron-phonon coupling through the appearance of phonon sidebands that dress crystal field excitations. These results establish the key energy scales relevant to the magnetism in NiRh$_2$O$_4$ and further demonstrate that covalency and lattice dynamics play essential roles in controlling the magnetic ground states of $A$-site spinels.

Strong Superexchange in a $d^{9-δ}$ Nickelate Revealed by Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering

The discovery of superconductivity in a $d^{9-δ}$ nickelate has inspired disparate theoretical perspectives regarding the essential physics of this class of materials. A key issue is the magnitude of the magnetic superexchange, which relates to whether cuprate-like high-temperature nickelate superconductivity could be realized. We address this question using Ni L-edge and O K-edge spectroscopy of the reduced trilayer nickelate $d^{9-1/3}$ La4Ni3O8 and associated theoretical modeling. A magnon energy scale of ~80 meV resulting from a nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange of $J = 69(4)4$ meV is observed, proving that $d^{9-δ}$ nickelates can host a large superexchange. This value, along with that of the Ni-O hybridization estimated from our O K-edge data, implies that trilayer nickelates represent an intermediate case between the infinite-layer nickelates and the cuprates, and suggests that they represent a promising route towards higher-temperature nickelate superconductivity.

Nature of the charge-density wave excitations in cuprates

The discovery of charge-density wave (CDW)-related effects in the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of cuprates holds the tantalizing promise of clarifying the interactions that stabilize the electronic order. Here, we report a comprehensive RIXS study of La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) finding that CDW effects persist up to a remarkably high doping level of x = 0.21 before disappearing at x = 0.25. The inelastic excitation spectra remain essentially unchanged with doping despite crossing a topological transition in the Fermi surface. This indicates that the spectra contain little or no direct coupling to electronic excitations near the Fermi surface, rather they are dominated by the resonant cross-section for phonons and CDW-induced phonon-softening. We interpret our results in terms of a CDW that is generated by strong correlations and a phonon response that is driven by the CDW-induced modification of the lattice.

Enhanced electron-phonon coupling for charge-density-wave formation in La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4+δ}$

Charge density wave (CDW) correlations are prevalent in all copper-oxide superconductors. While CDWs in conventional metals are driven by coupling between lattice vibrations and electrons, the role of the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in cuprate CDWs is strongly debated. Using Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), we study the CDW and Cu-O bond-stretching phonons in the stripe-ordered cuprate La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4+δ}$. We investigate the interplay between charge order and EPC as a function of doping and temperature, and find that the EPC is enhanced in a narrow momentum region around the CDW wave vector. By detuning the incident photon energy from the absorption resonance, we extract an EPC matrix element at the CDW wave vector of $M\simeq$ 0.36 eV, which decreases to $M\simeq$ 0.30 eV at high temperature in the absence of the CDW. Our results suggest a feedback mechanism in which the CDW enhances the EPC which, in turn, further stabilizes the CDW.

Quenched Magnon excitations by oxygen sublattice reconstruction in (SrCuO$_2$)$_n$/(SrTiO$_3$)$_2$ superlattices

The recently discovered structural reconstruction in the cuprate superlattice (SrCuO$_2$)$_n$/(SrTiO$_3$)$_2$ has been investigated across the critical value of $n=5$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). We find that at the critical value of $n$, the cuprate layer remains largely in the bulk-like two-dimensional structure with a minority of Cu plaquettes being reconstructed. The partial reconstruction leads to quenching of the magnons starting at the $Γ$-point due to the minority plaquettes acting as scattering points. Although comparable in relative abundance, the doped charge impurities in electron-doped cuprate superconductors do not show this quenching of magnetic excitations.

Electronic Transitions in Strained SmNiO_3 Thin Films

Nickelates are known for their metal to insulator transition (MIT) and an unusual magnetic ordering, occurring at T=T_Néel. Here, we investigate thin films of SmNiO_3 subjected to different levels of epitaxial strain. We find that the original bulk behavior (T_Néel<T_MI) is strongly affected by applying compressive strain to the films. For small compressive strains, a regime where T_Néel=T_MI is achieved, the paramagnetic insulating phase characteristic of the bulk compound is suppressed and the MIT becomes 1st order. Further increasing the in-plane compression of the SmNiO_3 lattice leads to the stabilization of a single metallic paramagnetic phase.

Tailoring the electronic transitions of NdNiO_3 films through (111)_pc oriented interfaces

Bulk NdNiO_3 and thin films grown along the pseudocubic (001)_pc axis display a 1st order metal to insulator transition (MIT) together with a Néel transition at T=200K. Here, we show that for NdNiO3 films deposited on (111)_pc NdGaO_3 the MIT occurs at T=335K and the Néel transition at T=230 K. By comparing transport and magnetic properties of layers grown on substrates with different symmetries and lattice parameters, we demonstrate a particularly large tuning when the epitaxy is realized on (111)_pc surfaces. We attribute this effect to the specific lattice matching conditions imposed along this direction when using orthorhombic substrates.

Itinerant effects and enhanced magnetic interactions in Bi-based multilayer cuprates

The cuprate high temperature superconductors exhibit a pronounced trend in which the superconducting transition temperature, $T_{\rm c}$, increases with the number of CuO$_2$ planes, $n$, in the crystal structure. We compare the magnetic excitation spectrum of Bi$_{2+x}$Sr$_{2-x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi-2201) and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10 + δ}$ (Bi-2223), with $n=1$ and $n=3$ respectively, using Cu $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Near the anti-nodal zone boundary we find the paramagnon energy in Bi-2223 is substantially higher than that in Bi-2201, indicating that multilayer cuprates host stronger effective magnetic exchange interactions, providing a possible explanation for the $T_{\rm c}$ vs.\ $n$ scaling. In contrast, the nodal direction exhibits very strongly damped, almost non-dispersive excitations. We argue that this implies that the magnetism in the doped cuprates is partially itinerant in nature.

Bimagnon studies in cuprates with Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering at the O K edge. I - An assessment on La2CuO4 and a comparison with the excitation at Cu L3 and Cu K edges

We assess the capabilities of magnetic Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) at the O $K$ edge in undoped cuprates by taking La_{2}CuO_{4} as a benchmark case, based on a series of RIXS measurements that we present here. By combining the experimental results with basic theory we point out the fingerprints of bimagnon in the O $K$ edge RIXS spectra. These are a dominant peak around 450 meV, the almost complete absence of dispersion both with $π$ and $σ$ polarization and the almost constant intensity vs. the transferred momentum with $σ$ polarization. This behavior is quite different from Cu $L_3$ edge RIXS giving a strongly dispersing bimagnon tending to zero at the center of the Brillouin zone. This is clearly shown by RIXS measurements at the Cu $L_3$ edge that we present. The Cu $L_3$ bimagnon spectra and those at Cu $K$ edge - both from the literature and from our data - however, have the same shape. These similarities and differences are understood in terms of different sampling of the bimagnon continuum. This panorama points out the unique possibilities offered by O $K$ RIXS in the study of magnetic excitations in cuprates near the center of the BZ.

Bimagnon studies in cuprates with Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering at the O K edge. II - The doping effect in La2-xSrxCuO4

We present RIXS data at O K edge from La2-xSrxCuO4 vs. doping between x=0.10 and x=0.22 with attention to the magnetic excitations in the Mid-Infrared region. The sampling done by RIXS is the same as in the undoped cuprates provided the excitation is at the first pre-peak induced by doping. Note that this excitation energy is about 1.5 eV lower than that needed to see bimagnons in the parent compound. This approach allows the study of the upper region of the bimagnon continuum around 450 meV within about one third of the Brilluoin Zone around Γ. The results show the presence of damped bimagnons and of higher even order spin excitations with almost constant spectral weight at all the dopings explored here. The implications on high Tc studies are briefly addressed.

Observation of charge accumulation and onsite Coulomb repulsion at transition metal impurities in the iron pnictides

We report a combined valence band photoemission and Auger spectroscopy study of single crystalline Ca(Fe,Co)2As2 and Ba(Fe,TM)2As2 with TM=Ni or Cu. The valence band photoemission data show directly that the TM-states move to higher binding energies with increasing atomic number, contributing less and less to the states close to the Fermi level. Furthermore, the 3d8 final state of the LVV Auger decay, which is observed for Ni and Cu, unambiguously reveals the accumulation of charge at these impurities. We also show that the onsite Coulomb interaction on the impurity strongly increases when moving from Co over Ni to Cu. Our results quantify the impurity potentials and imply that the superconducting state is robust against impurity scattering.

BaVS$_3$ probed by V L edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Polarization dependent vanadium L edge X-ray absorption spectra of BaVS$_3$ single crystals are measured in the four phases of the compound. The difference between signals with the polarization \textbf{E}$\perp$\textbf{c} and \textbf{E}$\parallel$\textbf{c} (linear dichroism) changes with temperature. Besides increasing intensity of one of the maxima, a new structure appears in the pre-edge region below the metal-insulator transition. More careful examination brings to light that the changes start already with pretransitional charge density wave fluctuations. Simple symmetry analysis suggests that the effect is related to rearrangements in $E_{g}$ and $A_{1g}$ states, and is compatible with the formation of four inequivalent V sites along the V-S chain.

Hole-depletion of ladders in Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ induced by correlation effects

The hole distribution in Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ is studied by low temperature polarization dependent O K Near-Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure measurements and state of the art electronic structure calculations that include core-hole and correlation effects in a mean-field approach. Contrary to all previous analysis, based on semi-empirical models, we show that correlations and antiferromagnetic ordering favor the strong chain hole-attraction. For the remaining small number of holes accommodated on ladders, leg-sites are preferred to rung-sites. The small hole affinity of rung-sites explains naturally the 1D - 2D cross-over in the phase diagram of (La,Y,Sr,Ca)$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$

Energy and symmetry of $dd$ excitations in undoped layered cuprates measured by Cu $L_3$ resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We measured high resolution Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) of the undoped cuprates La$_2$CuO$_4$, Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, CaCuO$_2$ and NdBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_6$. The dominant spectral features were assigned to $dd$ excitations and we extensively studied their polarization and scattering geometry dependence. In a pure ionic picture, we calculated the theoretical cross sections for those excitations and used them to fit the experimental data with excellent agreement. By doing so, we were able to determine the energy and symmetry of Cu-3$d$ states for the four systems with unprecedented accuracy and confidence. The values of the effective parameters could be obtained for the single ion crystal field model but not for a simple two-dimensional cluster model. The firm experimental assessment of $dd$ excitation energies carries important consequences for the physics of high $T_c$ superconductors. On one hand, having found that the minimum energy of orbital excitation is always $\geq 1.4$ eV, i.e., well above the mid-infrared spectral range, leaves to magnetic excitations (up to 300 meV) a major role in Cooper pairing in cuprates. On the other hand, it has become possible to study quantitatively the effective influence of $dd$ excitations on the superconducting gap in cuprates.

Evolution of magnetic phases and orbital occupation in (SrMnO3)n/(LaMnO3)2n superlattices

The magnetic and electronic modifications induced at the interfaces in (SrMnO$_{3}$)$_{n}$/(LaMnO$_{3}$)$_{2n}$ superlattices have been investigated by linear and circular magnetic dichroism in the Mn L$_{2,3}$ x-ray absorption spectra. Together with theoretical calculations, our data demonstrate that the charge redistribution across interfaces favors in-plane ferromagnetic (FM) order and $e_{g}(x^{2}-y^{2})$ orbital occupation, in agreement with the average strain. Far from interfaces, inside LaMnO$_3$, electron localization and local strain favor antiferromagnetism (AFM) and $e_{g}(3z^{2}-r^{2})$ orbital occupation. For $n=1$ the high density of interfacial planes ultimately leads to dominant FM order forcing the residual AFM phase to be in-plane too, while for $n \geq 5$ the FM layers are separated by AFM regions having out-of-plane spin orientation.

Orbital reconstruction and two-dimensional electron gas at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface

Conventional two-dimensional electron gases are realized by engineering the interfaces between semiconducting compounds. In 2004, Ohtomo and Hwang discovered that an electron gas can be also realized at the interface between large gap insulators made of transition metal oxides [1]. This finding has generated considerable efforts to clarify the underlying microscopic mechanism. Of particular interest is the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 system, because it features especially striking properties. High carrier mobility [1], electric field tuneable superconductivity [2] and magnetic effects [3], have been found. Here we show that an orbital reconstruction is underlying the generation of the electron gas at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 n-type interface. Our results are based on extensive investigations of the electronic properties and of the orbital structure of the interface using X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy. In particular we find that the degeneracy of the Ti 3d states is fully removed, and that the Ti 3dxy levels become the first available states for conducting electrons.
