MeerKAT discovery of 13 new pulsars in Omega Centauri

The most massive globular cluster in our Galaxy, Omega Centauri, is an interesting target for pulsar searches, because of its multiple stellar populations and the intriguing possibility that it was once the nucleus of a galaxy that was absorbed into the Milky Way. The recent discoveries of pulsars in this globular cluster and their association with known X-ray sources was a hint that, given the large number of known X-ray sources, there is a much larger undiscovered pulsar population. We used the superior sensitivity of the MeerKAT radio telescope to search for pulsars in Omega Centauri. In this paper, we present some of the first results of this survey, including the discovery of 13 new pulsars; the total number of known pulsars in this cluster currently stands at 18. At least half of them are in binary systems and preliminary orbital constraints suggest that most of the binaries have light companions. We also discuss the ratio between isolated and binaries pulsars and how they were formed in this cluster.

News and views regarding PSR J1757-1854, a highly-relativistic binary pulsar

We provide an update on the ongoing monitoring and study of the highly-relativistic double neutron star binary system PSR J1757-1854, a 21.5-ms pulsar in a highly eccentric, 4.4-hour orbit. The extreme nature of this pulsar's orbit allows it to probe a parameter space largely unexplored by other relativistic binary pulsars. For example, it displays one of the highest gravitational wave (GW) luminosities of any known binary pulsar, as well as the highest rate or orbital decay due to GW damping. PSR J1757-1854 is also notable in that it is an excellent candidate for exploring new tests of General Relativity and other gravitational theories, with possible measurements of both Lense-Thirring precession and relativistic orbital deformation (through the post-Keplerian parameter $δ_θ$) anticipated within the next 3-5 years. Here we present a summary of the latest interim results from the ongoing monitoring of this pulsar as part of an international, multi-telescope campaign. This includes an update of the pulsar's long-term timing and post-Keplerian parameters, new constraints on the pulsar's proper motion and corresponding Shklovskii kinematic correction, and new limits on the pulsar's geodetic precession as determined by monitoring for secular changes in the pulse profile. We also highlight prospects for future work, including an updated timeline on new relativistic tests following the introduction of MeerKAT observations.

The High Time Resolution Universe Pulsar Survey -- XVII. PSR J1325-6253, a low eccentricity double neutron star system from an ultra-stripped supernova

The observable population of double neutron star (DNS) systems in the Milky Way allow us to understand the nature of supernovae and binary stellar evolution. Until now, all DNS systems in wide orbits ($ P_{\textrm{orb}}>$ 1~day) have been found to have orbital eccentricities, $e > 0.1$. In this paper, we report the discovery of pulsar PSR J1325$-$6253: a DNS system in a 1.81 day orbit with a surprisingly low eccentricity of just $e = 0.064$. Through 1.4 yr of dedicated timing with the Parkes radio telescope we have been able to measure its rate of advance of periastron, $\dotω=0.138 \pm 0.002$ $\rm deg$ $\rm yr^{-1}$. If this induced $\dotω$ is solely due to general relativity then the total mass of the system is, $M_{\rm sys} = 2.57 \pm 0.06$ M$_{\odot}$. Assuming an edge-on orbit the minimum companion mass is constrained to be $M_\mathrm{c,min}>0.98$ M$_{\odot}$ which implies the pulsar mass is $M_\mathrm{p,max}<1.59 $ M$_{\odot}$. Its location in the $P$-$\dot{P}$ diagram suggests that, like other DNS systems, PSR J1325$-$6253 is a recycled pulsar and if its mass is similar to the known examples ($>1.3$ M$_\odot$), then the companion neutron star is probably less than $\sim1.25$ M$_\odot$ and the system is inclined at about $50^{\circ}$-$60^{\circ}$. The low eccentricity along with the wide orbit of the system strongly favours a formation scenario involving an ultra-stripped supernova explosion.

Tomographic entanglement indicators from NMR experiments

In recent years, the performance of different entanglement indicators obtained directly from tomograms has been assessed in continuous-variable and hybrid quantum systems. In this paper, we carry out this task in the case of spin systems. We compute the entanglement indicators from actual experimental data obtained from three liquid-state NMR experiments, and compare them with standard entanglement measures calculated from the corresponding density matrices, both experimentally reconstructed and numerically computed. The gross features of entanglement dynamics and spin squeezing properties are found to be reproduced by these entanglement indicators. However, the extent to which these indicators and spin squeezing track the entanglement during time evolution of the multipartite systems in the NMR experiments is very sensitive to the precise nature and strength of interactions as well as the manner in which the full system is partitioned into subsystems. We also use the IBM quantum computer to implement equivalent circuits that capture the dynamics of the multipartite system in one of the NMR experiments. We compute and compare the entanglement indicators obtained from the tomograms corresponding to the experimental execution and simulation of these equivalent circuits. This exercise shows that these indicators can estimate the degree of entanglement without necessitating detailed state reconstruction procedures, establishing the advantage of the tomographic approach.

Tomographic entanglement indicators in frequency combs and Talbot carpets

Recent theoretical investigations on tomographic entanglement indicators have showcased the advantages of the tomographic approach in the context of continuous-variable (CV), spin and hybrid quantum systems. Direct estimation of entanglement using experimental data from the IBM quantum computing platform and NMR experiments have also been carried out in earlier work. A similar investigation in the context of CV systems is necessary to fully assess the utility of our tomographic approach. In this paper, we highlight the advantages of our approach in the context of experiments reported in the literature on two CV systems, namely, entangled Talbot carpets and biphoton frequency combs. We use the tomographic entanglement indicator to assess the extent of entanglement between a pair of Talbot carpets and demonstrate that this provides a simpler and more direct procedure compared to the one suggested in the experiment. We also establish that the tomograms corresponding to the two biphoton frequency combs carry clear entanglement signatures that distinguish between the two states.

Bifurcations, time-series analysis of observables, and network properties in a tripartite quantum system

In a tripartite system comprising a $Λ$-atom interacting with two radiation fields in the presence of field nonlinearities and an intensity-dependent field-atom coupling, striking features have been shown to occur in the dynamics of the mean photon number $\aver{N_{i}(t)}$ ($i = 1,\,2$) corresponding to either field. In this Letter, we carry out a detailed time-series analysis and establish an interesting correlation between the short-time and long-time dynamics of $\aver{N_{i}(t)}$. Lyapunov exponents, return maps, recurrence plots, recurrence-time statistics, as well as the clustering coefficient and the transitivity of networks constructed from the time series, are studied as functions of the intensity parameter $κ$. These are shown to carry signatures of a special value $κ= \barκ$. Our work also exhibits how techniques from nonlinear dynamics help analyze the behavior of observables in multipartite quantum systems.

The High Time Resolution Universe Pulsar Survey -- XVI. Discovery and timing of 40 pulsars from the southern Galactic plane

We present the results of processing an additional 44% of the High Time Resolution Universe South Low Latitude (HTRU-S LowLat) pulsar survey, the most sensitive blind pulsar survey of the southern Galactic plane to date. Our partially-coherent segmented acceleration search pipeline is designed to enable the discovery of pulsars in short, highly-accelerated orbits, while our 72-min integration lengths will allow us to discover pulsars at the lower end of the pulsar luminosity distribution. We report the discovery of 40 pulsars, including three millisecond pulsar-white dwarf binary systems (PSRs J1537-5312, J1547-5709 and J1618-4624), a black-widow binary system (PSR J1745-23) and a candidate black-widow binary system (PSR J1727-2951), a glitching pulsar (PSR J1706-4434), an eclipsing binary pulsar with a 1.5-yr orbital period (PSR J1653-45), and a pair of long spin-period binary pulsars which display either nulling or intermittent behaviour (PSRs J1812-15 and J1831-04). We show that the total population of 100 pulsars discovered in the HTRU-S LowLat survey to date represents both an older and lower-luminosity population, and indicates that we have yet to reach the bottom of the luminosity distribution function. We present evaluations of the performance of our search technique and of the overall yield of the survey, considering the 94% of the survey which we have processed to date. We show that our pulsar yield falls below earlier predictions by approximately 25% (especially in the case of millisecond pulsars), and discuss explanations for this discrepancy as well as future adaptations in RFI mitigation and searching techniques which may address these shortfalls.

Entanglement dynamics in a model tripartite quantum system

A system comprising a $Λ$-type or V-type atom interacting with two radiation fields exhibits, during its dynamical evolution, interesting optical phenomena such as electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) and a variety of nonclassical effects. Signatures of the latter are seen in the entanglement dynamics of the atomic subsystem and in appropriate field observables. Some of these effects have been experimentally detected, and have even been used to change the nonlinear optical properties of certain atomic media. It is therefore useful to investigate the roles played by specific initial states of the radiation fields, detuning parameters, field nonlinearities and the nature of field-atom couplings on EIT and on the entanglement between subsystems. We investigate these aspects in the framework of a simple model that captures the salient features of such tripartite entangled systems. Entanglement dynamics is shown to be very sensitive to the intensity-dependent atom-field couplings. Unexpected interesting features pertaining to the collapses and revivals of the atomic subsystem von Neumann entropy appear. These features could, in principle, be useful in enabling entanglement.

Dynamics of an open quantum system interacting with a quantum environment

We examine the dynamics of subsystems of bipartite and tripartite quantum systems with nonlinear Hamiltonians. We consider two models which capture the generic features of open quantum systems: a three-level atom interacting with a single-mode radiation field, and a three-level atom interacting with two field modes which do not directly interact with each other. The entanglement of specific initially unentangled states of the atom-field system is examined through the time-varying subsystem von Neumann entropy (SVNE). The counterparts of near-revivals and fractional revivals of the initial state are clearly identifiable in the SVNE in all cases where revival phenomena occur. The Mandel $Q$ parameter corresponding to the photon number of a radiation field is obtained as a function of time in both models. In those cases where revivals are absent, a time series analysis of the mean photon number reveals a variety of ergodicity properties (as manifested in return maps, recurrence-time distributions and Lyapunov exponents), depending on the strength of the nonlinearity and the degree of coherence of the initial state of the radiation field(s).

Effective Bandwidth Utilization in IEEE802.11 for VOIP

Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) is one of the most important applications for the IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs). For network planners who are deploying VoIP over WLANs, one of the important issues is the VoIP capacity. VoIP bandwidth consumption over a WAN is one of the most important factors to consider when building a VoIP infrastructure. Failure to account for VoIP bandwidth requirements will severely limit the reliability of a VoIP system and place a huge burden on the WAN infrastructure. Less bandwidth utilization is the key reasons for reduced number of channel accesses in VOIP. But in the QoS point of view the free bandwidth of atleast 1-5% will improve the voice quality. This proposal utilizes the maximum bandwidth by leaving 1-5% free bandwidth. A Bandwidth Data rate Moderation (BDM) algorithm has been proposed which correlates the data rate specified in IEEE802.11b with the free bandwidth. At each time BDM will calculate the bandwidth utilization before sending the packet to improve performance and voice quality of VoIP. The bandwidth calculation in BDM can be done by using Erlang and VOIP bandwidth calculator. Finally, ns2 experimental study shows the relationship between bandwidth utilization, free bandwidth and data rate. The paper concludes that marginal VoIP call rate has been increased by BDM algorithm.

Control of Wave Packet Revivals Using Geometric Phases

Wave packets in a system governed by a Hamiltonian with a generic nonlinear spectrum typically exhibit both full and fractional revivals. It is shown that the latter can be eliminated by inducing suitable geometric phases in the states, by varying the parameters in the Hamiltonian cyclically with a period T. Further, with the introduction of this natural time step T, the occurrence of near revivals can be mapped onto that of Poincaré recurrences in an irrational rotation map of the circle. The distinctive recurrence time statistics of the latter can thus serve as a clear signature of the dynamics of wave packet revivals.
