LHC as a photon-photon collider: bounds on $Γ_{X\toγγ}$

In the relatively recent CMS data, there is a hint on the existence of a resonance with the mass 28 GeV coupling to muons. Such a resonance should also couple to photons through the fermion loop, therefore it can be searched for in ultraperipheral collisions (UPC) of protons. We set an upper bound on the $X γγ$ coupling constant from the data on $μ^+ μ^-$ pair production in UPC at the LHC. Our approach can be used for similar resonances should they appear in the future.

Quasistable charginos in ultraperipheral proton-proton collisions at the LHC

We propose a model-independent approach for the search of charged long-lived particles produced in ultraperipheral collisions at the LHC. The main idea is to improve event reconstruction at ATLAS and CMS with the help of their forward detectors. Detection of both scattered protons in forward detectors allows complete recovery of event kinematics. Though this requirement reduces the number of events, it greatly suppresses the background, including the large background from the pile-up.

Modification of the zirconia ceramics by different calcium phosphate coatings:comparative study

The aim of this study was to characterize different calcium phosphate coatings and evaluate in vitro cell response of these materials to ceramics implants. The physical and chemical properties of calcium phosphate coatings formed by RF-magnetron sputtering of calcium phosphate tribasic, hydroxyapatite, calcium phosphate monobasic, calcium phosphate dibasic dihydrate and calcium pyrophosphate powders were characterized. Cell adhesion and cell viability were examined on calcium phosphate coatings using mesenchymal stem cells. The results of cytotoxicity measurements of the calcium phosphate coatings revealed that only the coating obtained by RF-magnetron sputtering of the calcium phosphate dibasic dihydrate and calcium phosphate tribasic powders possessed lower cell viability than the zirconia substrate. The coating formed by sputtering of the calcium phosphate tribasic powder demonstrated more cells adhered onto its surface compared with other calcium phosphate coatings.

General properties and kinetics of spontaneous baryogenesis

General features of spontaneous baryogenesis are studied. The relation between the time derivative of the (pseudo)goldstone field and the baryonic chemical potential is revisited. It is shown that this relation essentially depends upon the representation chosen for the fermionic fields with non-zero baryonic number (quarks). The calculations of the cosmological baryon asymmetry are based on the kinetic equation generalized to the case of non-stationary background. The effects of the finite interval of the integration over time are also included into consideration. All these effects combined lead to a noticeable deviation of the magnitude of the baryon asymmetry from the canonical results.

Modification of poly(L-lactide) and polycaprolactone bioresorbable polymeric materials by RF plasma discharge: a preliminary study evaluating EA-hy 926 cell attachment

Surface modification of poly(L-lactide) (L-PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL) bioresorbable polymers by radio-frequency thermal glow discharge plasma is reported. Improved biocompatibility of L-PLA and PCL materials was obtained by employing hydroxyapatite target sputtering in Ar+ plasma as evidenced by the change of L-PLA and PCL properties from highly hydrophobic to hydrophilic, with absolute wettability obtained for both materials, and enhanced endothelial hybrid cell line EA-hy 926 attachment to modified surfaces. For the latter, surface properties that suppress adverse cellular responses (e.g. apoptosis, necrosis) were also attained. Surface roughness and surface free energy were found to increase significantly for both polymers under prolonged plasma exposure and, a longer chain aliphatic PCL were found to display a marginally better post plasma-treated biocompatibility compared to L-PLA.

Recovering partial conservation of axial current in diffractive neutrino scattering

A model of diffractive neutrino scattering is formulated in terms of the chiral hadronic current which is conserved in the limit of vanishing pion mass. This current has the correct singularity structure and, naturally, does not lead to contradictions with a partial conservation of the axial current (PCAC). In that respect we differ from earlier work in the literature, where a breakdown of PCAC had been reported. We show that such a breakdown of PCAC is an artifact of the hadronic current non-conservation in the model developed there.

CPT, Lorentz invariance, mass differences, and charge non-conservation

A non-local field theory which breaks discrete symmetries, including C, P, CP, and CPT, but preserves Lorentz symmetry, is presented. We demonstrate that at one-loop level the masses for particle and antiparticle remain equal due to Lorentz symmetry only. An inequality of masses implies breaking of the Lorentz invariance and non-conservation of the usually conserved charges.

Quadrupolar contact terms and Hyperfine Structure

In the interaction of two electric quadrupoles, there is at short distances a contact term proportional to the second derivative of a delta function. This contact term contributes to the hyperfine splitting of bound states of two particles with spin one or higher-for example the bound states of Omega minus and a nucleus of spin one.The contact hyperfine splitting occurs in states with orbital angular momentum one(p-wave), in contrast to the Fermi contact interaction which is in s-states.We find that these contact splittings will be observable with Omega minus atoms and help measure the quadrupole moment and charge radius of the hyperon.

Mass of the higgs versus fourth generation masses

The predicted value of the higgs mass $m_H$ is analyzed assuming the existence of the fourth generation of leptons ($N, E$) and quarks ($U, D$). The steep and flat directions are found in the five-dimensional parameter space: $m_H$, $m_U$, $m_D$, $m_N$, $m_E$. The LEPTOP fit of the precision electroweak data is compatible (in particular) with $m_H \sim 300$ GeV, $m_N \sim 50$ GeV, $m_E \sim 100$ GeV, $m_U +m_D \sim 500$ GeV, and $|m_U -m_D| \sim 75$ GeV. The quality of fits drastically improves when the data on b- and c-quark asymmetries and new NuTeV data on deep inelastic scattering are ignored.

Theory of Z boson decays

The precision data on Z boson decays from LEP-I and SLC colliders are compared with the predictions based on the Minimal Standard Theory. The Born approximation of the theory is based on three most accurately known observables: G_mu -- the four fermion coupling constant of muon decay, m_Z -- the mass of the Z boson, and alpha(m_Z) -- the value of the running fine structure constant at the scale of m_Z. The electroweak loop corrections are expressed, in addition, in terms of the masses of higgs, m_H, of the top and bottom quarks, m_t and m_b, and of the strong interaction constant alpha_s(m_Z). The main emphasis of the review is focused on the one-electroweak-loop approximation. Two electroweak loops have been calculated in the literature only partly. Possible manifestations of new physics are briefly discussed.

Neutrino Magnetic Moment Behaviour in a Renormalizable Model

We have shown in hep-ph/9608266 that a neutrino magnetic moment form factor $μ_ν (q^2)$ could be considerably amplified at low momentum transfer,$q^2 \leq m_N^2$, at the cost of introducing an extra light neutral fermion $N$ with mass $m_N$ and nonzero magnetic moment. It was assumed that the magnetic moment of $N$ would originate in a renormalizable way at a heavy scale $M$. While the enhancement of the neutrino magnetic moment was unambiguous, we stressed that in this effective Lagrangian approach an uncertainty persisted about the behaviour of $μ_ν (q^2)$ in the interval $m_N^2 \ll q^2 \ll M^2$. This is not unexpected in presence of a nonrenormalizable effective theory (a particle with bare magnetic moment). We show in a simple renormalizable model for the magnetic moment of particle $N$ how a 2 loop calculation solves the ambiguity. In the domain $m_N^2 \ll q^2 \ll M^2$ we confirm the result obtained in hep-ph/9608266 using a sharp cut-off. It is amusing that the correct results are given, as expected, through dimensional regularization in the full theory, but not in the effective lagrangian approach.

Do Present LEP Data Provide Evidence for Electroweak Corrections?

The Born approximation, based on $\barα\equivα(m_Z)$ instead of $α$, reproduces all electroweak precision measurements within their $(1σ)$ accuracy. The low upper limits for the genuinely electroweak corrections constitute one of the major achievements of LEP. The astonishing smallness of these corrections results from the cancellation of a large positive contribution from the heavy top quark and large negative contributions from all other virtual particles. It is precisely the non-observation of electroweak radiative corrections that places stringent upper and lower limits on the top mass.
