Edge-connectivity matrices and their spectra

The edge-connectivity matrix of a weighted graph is the matrix whose off-diagonal $v$-$w$ entry is the weight of a minimum edge cut separating vertices $v$ and $w$. Its computation is a classical topic of combinatorial optimization since at least the seminal work of Gomory and Hu. In this article, we investigate spectral properties of these matrices. In particular, we provide tight bounds on the smallest eigenvalue and the energy. Moreover, we study the eigenvector structure and show in which cases eigenvectors can be easily obtained from matrix entries. These results in turn rely on a new characterization of those nonnegative matrices that can actually occur as edge-connectivity matrices.

Exact recursive estimation of linear systems subject to bounded disturbances

This paper addresses the classical problem of determining the sets of possible states of a linear discrete-time system subject to bounded disturbances from measurements corrupted by bounded noise. These so-called uncertainty sets evolve with time as new measurements become available. We present an exact, computationally simple procedure that propagates a point on the boundary of the uncertainty set at some time instant to a set of points on the boundary of the uncertainty set at the next time instant.

An ensemble related to discrete orthogonal polynomials and its application to tilings of a half-hexagon

We discuss asymptotic properties of a family of discrete probability measures which may be used to model particle configurations with a wall on a set of discrete nodes. The correlations are shown to be determinantal and are expressed in terms of discrete orthogonal polynomials. As an application we study random tilings of the half-hexagon or, equivalently, configurations of non-intersecting lattice paths above a wall, so called water melons.

The Distribution of Heights of Discrete Excursions

We compute the limiting distribution of height of a random discrete excursion with step sets consisting of one positive step 1 and arbitrary finite set of non-positive integers. The limit law is the supremum of a Brownian excursion. This is well-known for Dyck and Motzkin paths. We apply a representation of the length and height generating function in terms of certain Schur polynomials put forward in a 2008 paper by Bousquet-Melout which leads to a form of the moment generating functions amenable to a Mellin transform analysis.

Limit laws for discrete excursions and meanders and linear functional equations with a catalytic variable

We study limit distributions for random variables defined in terms of coefficients of a power series which is determined by a certain linear functional equation. Our technique combines the method of moments with the kernel method of algebraic combinatorics. As limiting distributions the area distributions of the Brownian excursion and meander occur. As combinatorial applications we compute the area laws for discrete excursions and meanders with an arbitrary finite set of steps and the area distribution of column convex polyominoes. As a by-product of our approach we find the joint distribution of area and final altitude for meanders with an arbitrary step set, and for unconstrained Bernoulli walks (and hence for Brownian Motion) the joint distribution of signed areas and final altitude. We give these distributions in terms of their moments.

Exact solution of two classes of prudent polygons

Prudent walks are self-avoiding walks on the square lattice which never step into the direction of an already occupied vertex. We study the closed version of these walks, called prudent polygons, where the last vertex is adjacent to the first one. More precisely, we give the half-perimeter generating functions of two subclasses of prudent polygons, which turn out to be algebraic and non-D-finite, respectively.
