De Finetti Theorems for the Unitary Dual Group

We prove several de Finetti theorems for the unitary dual group, also called the Brown algebra. Firstly, we provide a finite de Finetti theorem characterizing $R$-diagonal elements with an identical distribution. This is surprising, since it applies to finite sequences in contrast to the de Finetti theorems for classical and quantum groups; also, it does not involve any known independence notion. Secondly, considering infinite sequences in $W^*$-probability spaces, our characterization boils down to operator-valued free centered circular elements, as in the case of the unitary quantum group $U_n^+$. Thirdly, the above de Finetti theorems build on dual group actions, the natural action when viewing the Brown algebra as a dual group. However, we may also equip the Brown algebra with a bialgebra action, which is closer to the quantum group setting in a way. But then, we obtain a no-go de Finetti theorem: invariance under the bialgebra action of the Brown algebra yields zero sequences, in $W^*$-probability spaces. On the other hand, if we drop the assumption of faithful states in $W^*$-probability spaces, we obtain a non-trivial half a de Finetti theorem similar to the case of the dual group action.

Lévy processes on the Lorentz-Lie algebra

Lévy processes in the sense of Schürmann on the Lie algebra of the Lorentz grouop are studied. It is known that only one of the irreducible unitary representations of the Lorentz group admits a non-trivial one-cocycle. A Schürmann triple is constructed for this cocycle and the properties of the associated Lévy process are investigated. The decommpositions of the restrictions of this triple to the Lie subalgebras $so(3)$ and $so(2,1)$ are described.

Monotone Increment Processes, Classical Markov Processes, and Loewner Chains

We prove one-to-one correspondences between certain decreasing Loewner chains in the upper half-plane, a special class of real-valued Markov processes, and quantum stochastic processes with monotonically independent additive increments. This leads us to a detailed investigation of probability measures on $\mathbb{R}$ with univalent Cauchy transform. We discuss several subclasses of such measures and obtain characterizations in terms of analytic and geometric properties of the corresponding Cauchy transforms. Furthermore, we obtain analogous results for the setting of decreasing Loewner chains in the unit disk, which correspond to quantum stochastic processes of unitary operators with monotonically independent multiplicative increments.

Beurling-Fourier algebras of compact quantum groups: characters and finite dimensional representations

In this paper we study weighted versions of Fourier algebras of compact quantum groups. We focus on the spectral aspects of these Banach algebras in two different ways. We first investigate their Gelfand spectrum, which shows a connection to the maximal classical closed subgroup and its complexification. Secondly, we study specific finite dimensional representations coming from the complexification of the underlying quantum group. We demonstrate that the weighted Fourier algebras can detect the complexification structure in the special case of $SU_q(2)$, whose complexification is the quantum Lorentz group $SL_q(2,\mathbb{C})$.

Integration over the quantum diagonal subgroup and associated Fourier-like algebras

By analogy with the classical construction due to Forrest, Samei and Spronk we associate to every compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ a completely contractive Banach algebra $A_Δ(\mathbb{G})$, which can be viewed as a deformed Fourier algebra of $\mathbb{G}$. To motivate the construction we first analyse in detail the quantum version of the integration over the diagonal subgroup, showing that although the quantum diagonal subgroups in fact never exist, as noted earlier by Kasprzak and Sołtan, the corresponding integration represented by a certain idempotent state on $C(\mathbb{G})$ makes sense as long as $\mathbb{G}$ is of Kac type. Finally we analyse as an explicit example the algebras $A_Δ(O_N^+)$, $N\ge 2$, associated to Wang's free orthogonal groups, and show that they are not operator weakly amenable.

Lévy Processes on Quantum Permutation Groups

We describe basic motivations behind quantum or noncommutative probability, introduce quantum Lévy processes on compact quantum groups, and discuss several aspects of the study of the latter in the example of quantum permutation groups. The first half of this paper is a survey on quantum probability, compact quantum groups, and Lévy processes on compact quantum groups. In the second half the theory is applied to quantum permutations groups. Explicit examples are constructed and certain classes of such Lévy processes are classified.

One-to-one correspondence between generating functionals and cocycles on quantum groups in presence of symmetry

We prove that under a symmetry assumption all cocycles on Hopf *-algebras arise from generating functionals. This extends earlier results of R.Vergnioux and D.Kyed and has two quantum group applications: all quantum Lévy processes with symmetric generating functionals decompose into a maximal Gaussian and purely non-Gaussian part and the Haagerup property for discrete quantum groups is characterized by the existence of an arbitrary proper cocycle.

Higher order extension of Löwner's theory: Operator $k$-tone functions

The new notion of operator/matrix $k$-tone functions is introduced, which is a higher order extension of operator/matrix monotone and convex functions. Differential properties of matrix $k$-tone functions are shown. Characterizations, properties, and examples of operator $k$-tone functions are presented. In particular, integral representations of operator $k$-tone functions are given, generalizing familiar representations of operator monotone and convex functions.

Symmetries of Lévy processes on compact quantum groups, their Markov semigroups and potential theory

Strongly continuous semigroups of unital completely positive maps (i.e. quantum Markov semigroups or quantum dynamical semigroups) on compact quantum groups are studied. We show that quantum Markov semigroups on the universal or reduced C${}^*$-algebra of a compact quantum group which are translation invariant (w.r.t. to the coproduct) are in one-to-one correspondence with Lévy processes on its $*$-Hopf algebra. We use the theory of Lévy processes on involutive bialgebras to characterize symmetry properties of the associated quantum Markov semigroup. It turns out that the quantum Markov semigroup is GNS-symmetric (resp. KMS-symmetric) if and only if the generating functional of the Lévy process is invariant under the antipode (resp. the unitary antipode). Furthermore, we study Lévy processes whose marginal states are invariant under the adjoint action. In particular, we give a complete description of generating functionals on the free orthogonal quantum group $O_n^+$ that are invariant under the adjoint action. Finally, some aspects of the potential theory are investigated. We describe how the Dirichlet form and a derivation can be recovered from a quantum Markov semigroup and its Lévy process and we show how, under the assumption of GNS-symmetry and using the associated Schürmann triple, this gives rise to spectral triples. We discuss in details how the above results apply to compact groups, group C$^*$-algebras of countable discrete groups, free orthogonal quantum groups $O_n^+$ and the twisted $SU_q (2)$ quantum group.

Idempotent states on compact quantum groups and their classification on U_q(2), SU_q(2), and SO_q(3)

Unlike for locally compact groups, idempotent states on locally compact quantum groups do not necessarily arise as Haar states of compact quantum subgroups. We give a simple characterisation of those idempotent states on compact quantum groups which do arise as Haar states on quantum subgroups. We also show that all idempotent states on the quantum groups U_q(2), SU_q(2), and SO_q(3) (q in (-1,0) \cup (0,1]) arise in this manner and list the idempotent states on the compact quantum semigroups U_0(2), SU_0(2), and SO_0(3). In the Appendix we provide a short new proof of coamenability of the deformations of classical compact Lie groups based on their representation theory.

On Square Roots of the Haar State on Compact Quantum Groups

The paper is concerned with the extension of the classical study of probability measures on a compact group which are square roots of the Haar measure, due to Diaconis and Shahshahani, to the context of compact quantum groups. We provide a simple characterisation for compact quantum groups which admit no non-trivial square roots of the Haar state in terms of their corepresentation theory. In particular it is shown that such compact quantum groups are necessarily of Kac type and their subalgebras generated by the coefficients of a fixed two-dimensional irreducible corepresentation are isomorphic (as finite quantum groups) to the algebra of functions on the group of unit quaternions. An example of a quantum group whose Haar state admits no nontrivial square root and which is neither commutative nor cocommutative is given.
