Supertranslation-Invariant Dressed Lorentz Charges

We present an explicit formula for Lorentz boosts and rotations that commute with BMS supertranslations in asymptotically flat spacetimes. Key to the construction is the use of infrared regularizations and of a unitary transformation that makes observables commute with the soft degrees of freedom. We explicitly verify that our charges satisfy the Lorentz algebra and we check that they are consistent with expectations by evaluating them on the supertranslated Minkowski space and on the boosted Kerr black hole.

Classical double copy at null infinity

We give two double copy prescriptions which construct asymptotically flat solutions in gravity from asymptotically flat gauge fields. The first prescription applies to radiative fields, which are non-linear vacuum solutions determined by characteristic data at null infinity. For any two such radiative gauge fields (linear or non-linear), the characteristic data of a radiative metric, dilaton and axion is constructed by a simple `squaring' procedure, giving a classical double copy at the level of radiation fields. We demonstrate the procedure with several examples where the characteristic data can be explicitly integrated; for linear fields this also sheds light on the twistorial description of Weyl double copy. Our second prescription applies to all asymptotically flat fields at the level of their asymptotic equations of motion: we give a map between any solution of the asymptotic Maxwell equations and any solution of the asymptotic Einstein equations at null infinity. This also extends to the asymptotic charges and their duals, preserves the soft and hard sectors between gauge theory and gravity, and is related to the usual notion of double copy in scattering amplitudes.

Gravitational Wu-Yang Monopoles

We show that in an asymptotically flat space where an S-Matrix can be defined, dual supertranslations leave all its matrix elements invariant and the Hilbert space of asymptotic states factorizes into distinct super-selection sectors, labeled by their dual supertranslation charges. These results suggest that dual supertranslation may be interpreted as a redundant gauge symmetry of asymptotically flat spacetimes. This would allow to recast general relativity as a theory of diffeomorphisms possessing an additional asymptotic gauge symmetry. We then use the conjectured dual supertranslation gauge symmetry to construct a gravitational equivalent of the Wu-Yang monopole solution. The metric describing the solution is defined using two overlapping patches on the celestial sphere. The solution is regular on each one of the patches separately and differentiable in the overlap region, where the two descriptions are identical by virtue of a dual supertranslation gauge transformation. Our construction provides an alternative to Misner's interpretation of the Taub-NUT metric. In particular, we find that using our approach the Taub-NUT metric can be made regular everywhere on the celestial sphere and at the same time it is devoid of closed timelike curves, provided that the bound $\frac{m}{\ell} \leq \sqrt{\frac{5}{27}}$ on the ratio of mass to NUT charge is obeyed.

Properties of Dual Supertranslation Charges in Asymptotically Flat Spacetimes

We study several properties of some new charges of asymptotically flat spacetimes. These dual supertranslation charges are akin to the magnetic large $U(1)$ charges in QED. In this paper we find the symmetries associated with these charges and show that the global dual supertranslation charge is topological because it is invariant under globally defined, smooth variations of the asymptotic metric. We also exhibit spacetimes where the charge does not vanish and we find dynamical processes that interpolate between regions with different values of these charges.

The Double Copy of Electric-Magnetic Duality

We argue that the complex transformation relating the Schwarzschild to the Taub-NUT metric, introduced by Talbot, is in fact an electric-magnetic duality transformation. We show that at null infinity, the complex transformation is equivalent to a complexified BMS supertranslation, which rotates the supertranslation and the dual (magnetic) supertranslation charges. This can also be seen from the cubic coupling between the classical source and its background, which for Taub-NUT is given by a complex phase rotation acting on gravitational minimal couplings. The same phase rotation generates dyons from electrons at the level of minimally coupled amplitudes, manifesting the double copy relation between the two solutions.

Holography for $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ on $S^4$

We construct the five-dimensional supergravity dual of the $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ mass deformation of the $\mathcal{N} =4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $S^4$ and use it to calculate the universal contribution to the corresponding $S^4$ free energy at large 't Hooft coupling in the planar limit. The holographic RG flow solutions are smooth and preserve four supercharges. As a novel feature compared to the holographic duals of $\mathcal{N} = 1^*$ on $\mathbb{R}^4$, in our backgrounds the five-dimensional dilaton has a non-trivial profile, and the gaugino condensate is fixed in terms of the mass-deformation parameters. Important aspects of the analysis involve characterizing the ambiguities in the partition function of non-conformal $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric theories on $S^4$ as well as the action of S-duality on the $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ theory.

Holography for $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ on $S^4$ and Supergravity

We study the $SO(3)$ sector of the $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ mass deformation of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills on $S^4$. The gravity dual of this sector is $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity coupled to two hypermultiplets. The scalar fields in the hypermultiplets span a quaternionic-Kahler manifold that is described by the coset $G_{2,2}/SU(2)\times SU(2)$. We use the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity dual to study field configurations in the bulk that feature analytical solutions, and compute the corresponding $S^4$ free energy using the procedure of holographic renormalization. We find that the free energy of these configurations is quadratic in the mass and show that it is devoid of unphysical ambiguities, hence providing an analytical prediction for the $\mathcal{N}=1$ four-sphere partition function at large 't Hooft coupling in the planar limit.

Confinement, Phase Transitions and non-Locality in the Entanglement Entropy

In this paper we study the conjectural relation between confinement in a quantum field theory and the presence of a phase transition in its corresponding entanglement entropy. We determine the sufficient conditions for the latter and compare to the conditions for having a confining Wilson line. We demonstrate the relation in several examples. Superficially, it may seem that certain confining field theories with a non-local high energy behaviour, like the dual of D5 branes wrapping a two-cycle, do not admit the corresponding phase transition. However, upon closer inspection we find that, through the introduction of a regulating UV-cutoff, new eight-surface configurations appear, that satisfy the correct concavity condition and recover the phase transition in the entanglement entropy. We show that a local-UV-completion to the confining non-local theories has a similar effect to that of the aforementioned cutoff.

On the dual flow of slow-roll Inflation

We study the dual 3d Euclidean RG flow of single-field slow-roll Inflation using the postulates of the dS/CFT correspondence. For that purpose we solve for the inflationary fluctuation at all times using a matching procedure between two approximate solutions which are separately valid at different regions of the space of parameters but together cover all of it. The two modes of the full solution mix such that each of the modes at late times is a superposition of the modes in the quasi-de Sitter region. We find that the dual theory admits two phases of explicit and spontaneous breaking of conformal symmetry. We also find that the mixing effect between the two modes in the bulk implies that slow-roll inflation does not guarantee, but rather generically generates, a nearly scale invariant power spectrum, except in fine-tuned situations. We suggest that the mixing effect can have a unique signature on other cosmological observables such as the bispectrum.

The a-theorem and conformal symmetry breaking in holographic RG flows

We study holographic models describing an RG flow between two fixed points driven by a relevant scalar operator. We show how to introduce a spurion field to restore Weyl invariance and compute the anomalous contribution to the generating functional in even dimensional theories. We find that the coefficient of the anomalous term is proportional to the difference of the conformal anomalies of the UV and IR fixed points, as expected from anomaly matching arguments in field theory. For any even dimensions the coefficient is positive as implied by the holographic a-theorem. For flows corresponding to spontaneous breaking of conformal invariance, we also compute the two-point functions of the energy-momentum tensor and the scalar operator and identify the dilaton mode. Surprisingly we find that in the simplest models with just one scalar field there is no dilaton pole in the two-point function of the scalar operator but a stronger singularity. We discuss the possible implications.

The holographic dilaton

We study a set of examples of holographic duals to theories with spontaneous breaking of conformal invariance in different dimensions. The geometries are domain walls interpolating between two AdS spaces, with a non-trivial background scalar field dual to a relevant operator. We comment on a subtlety in the low momentum expansion pointed out in arXiv:1304.3051 for the case of background gravity and revise the dynamical gravity results of arXiv:1207.0006, where the dilaton pole was missing in the scalar-scalar and tensor-tensor two-point functions. We compute the energy-momentum tensor and scalar two-point functions and show that there is indeed a massless dilaton pole.

Can holography reproduce the QCD Wilson line?

Recently a remarkable agreement was found between lattice simulations of long Wilson lines and behavior of the Nambu Goto string in flat space-time. However, the latter fails to fit the short distance behavior since it admits a tachyonic mode for a string shorter than a critical length. In this paper we examine the question of whether a classical holographic Wilson line can reproduce the lattice results for Wilson lines of any length. We determine the condition on the the gravitational background to admit a Coulombic potential at short distances. We analyze the system using three different renormalization schemes. We perform an explicit best fit comparison of the lattice results with the holographic models based on near extremal D3 and D4 branes, non-critical near extremal AdS6 model and the Klebanov Strassler model. We find that all the holographic models examined admit after renormalization a constant term in the potential. We argue that the curves of the lattice simulation also have such a constant term and we discuss its physical interpretation.
