$T\bar T$ Deformations through BRST Symmetry

We study the $T\bar T$ deformation using its formulation as a CFT coupled to two-dimensional dynamical gravity. Working within the BRST formalism, we apply the intertwiner construction of arXiv:2411.08865 to obtain a unitary "dressing" map between undeformed CFT operators and elements of the BRST cohomology of the deformed theory. We identify the resulting "dressed" operators corresponding to CFT primaries as the physical observables of the deformed theory and show that they arise from a field-dependent change of coordinates, in agreement with what is expected for the $T\bar T$ deformation. We then give a non-perturbative definition of deformed correlation functions as BRST-invariant expectation values of dressed operators in the gauge theory. Finally, we verify that our construction reproduces known structural and perturbative results.

A Realization of Slow Roll Inflation and the MSSM in Supergravity Theories with New Fayet-Iliopoulos Terms

A new supergravity D-term, not associated to gauged R-symmetry, was recently discovered and used to construct new supergravity models. In this paper we use a generalization of the new D-term that we used in previous works, to construct a supergravity model of slow-roll inflation with the observable sector of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Supersymmetry is broken at a high scale in the hidden sector and communicated to the observable sector by gravity mediation. The new D-term contains free parameters that can give large masses to scalar superpartners of quarks and leptons and to the higgsinos while holding the masses of observed particles fixed. Gauginos receive a mass from a non-canonical kinetic term for the vector supermultiplets. We also present a simple argument proving in full generality that the cutoff $Λ$ of effective theories containing new D-terms can never exceed the supersymmetry breaking scale. In our theory, the relation between D-term and the Hubble constant during inflation also implies the universal relation $Λ\lesssim \sqrt{H M_{Pl}}$.

A Supertranslation-Invariant Formula for the Angular Momentum Flux in Gravitational Scattering

The angular momentum radiated in gravitational scattering can be changed by performing a supertranslation of the asymptotic metric, i.e. by adding radiation with infinite wavelenght to the metric. This puzzling property can be avoided by adopting a supertranslation-invariant definition of the angular momentum flux in general relativity. Definitions currently available in the literature cannot reproduce the flux necessary to obtain the correct radiation reaction effects in gravitational scattering. They also disagree with computations of the flux performed using scattering amplitudes and soft graviton theorems. In this paper we provide a new supertranslation-invariant definition of the angular momentum flux in gravitational scattering that uses only asymptotic metric data and reproduces the flux necessary to obtain the correct radiation reaction effects.

Supertranslation-Invariant Dressed Lorentz Charges

We present an explicit formula for Lorentz boosts and rotations that commute with BMS supertranslations in asymptotically flat spacetimes. Key to the construction is the use of infrared regularizations and of a unitary transformation that makes observables commute with the soft degrees of freedom. We explicitly verify that our charges satisfy the Lorentz algebra and we check that they are consistent with expectations by evaluating them on the supertranslated Minkowski space and on the boosted Kerr black hole.

Constraining Liberated Supergravity

Fermionic terms in a class of locally supersymmetric theories called "liberated supergravity" are nonrenormalizable interactions proportional to inverse powers of the supersymmetry breaking scale and Planck mass. This property defines an intrinsic cutoff for liberated supergravities, which are therefore effective theories valid only below energies that never exceed the cutoff. Requiring that the cutoff exceeds current theoretical and observational bounds shows that the new scalar potential terms allowed by liberated supergravity can neither change the cosmological constant predicted by supergravity by any observable amount, nor give measurable contributions to particle masses. We show that it is nevertheless possible to define a simple liberated supergravity model of slow roll inflation valid up to energy scales that are well above the Hubble parameter during inflation and exceeds observable limits after inflation. The key to constructing a viable model is to change the supersymmetry breaking scale, from a Planck-scale value during inflation, to TeV-scale after inflation.

Cylinder transition amplitudes in pure AdS$_3$ Gravity

A spacelike surface with cylinder topology can be described by various sets of canonical variables within pure AdS3 gravity. Each is made of one real coordinate and one real momentum. The Hamiltonian can be either $H=0$ or it can be nonzero and we display the canonical transformations that map one into the other, in two relevant cases. In a choice of canonical coordinates, one of them is the cylinder aspect $q$, which evolves nontrivially in time. The time dependence of the aspect is an analytic function of time $t$ and an "angular momentum" $J$. By analytic continuation in both $t$ and $J$ we obtain a Euclidean evolution that can be described geometrically as the motion of a cylinder inside the region of the 3D hyperbolic space bounded by two "domes" (i.e. half spheres), which is topologically a solid torus. We find that for a given $J$ the Euclidean evolution cannot connect an initial aspect to an arbitrary final aspect; moreover, there are infinitely many Euclidean trajectories that connect any two allowed initial and final aspects. We compute the transition amplitude in two independent ways; first by solving exactly the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, then by summing in a sensible way all the saddle contributions, and we discuss why both approaches are mutually consistent.

Gravitational Wu-Yang Monopoles

We show that in an asymptotically flat space where an S-Matrix can be defined, dual supertranslations leave all its matrix elements invariant and the Hilbert space of asymptotic states factorizes into distinct super-selection sectors, labeled by their dual supertranslation charges. These results suggest that dual supertranslation may be interpreted as a redundant gauge symmetry of asymptotically flat spacetimes. This would allow to recast general relativity as a theory of diffeomorphisms possessing an additional asymptotic gauge symmetry. We then use the conjectured dual supertranslation gauge symmetry to construct a gravitational equivalent of the Wu-Yang monopole solution. The metric describing the solution is defined using two overlapping patches on the celestial sphere. The solution is regular on each one of the patches separately and differentiable in the overlap region, where the two descriptions are identical by virtue of a dual supertranslation gauge transformation. Our construction provides an alternative to Misner's interpretation of the Taub-NUT metric. In particular, we find that using our approach the Taub-NUT metric can be made regular everywhere on the celestial sphere and at the same time it is devoid of closed timelike curves, provided that the bound $\frac{m}{\ell} \leq \sqrt{\frac{5}{27}}$ on the ratio of mass to NUT charge is obeyed.

Prediction of short time qubit readout via measurement of the next quantum jump of a coupled damped driven harmonic oscillator

The dynamics of the next quantum jump for a qubit [two level system] coupled to a readout resonator [damped driven harmonic oscillator] is calculated. A quantum mechanical treatment of readout resonator reveals non exponential short time behavior which could facilitate detection of the state of the qubit faster than the resonator lifetime.

Properties of Dual Supertranslation Charges in Asymptotically Flat Spacetimes

We study several properties of some new charges of asymptotically flat spacetimes. These dual supertranslation charges are akin to the magnetic large $U(1)$ charges in QED. In this paper we find the symmetries associated with these charges and show that the global dual supertranslation charge is topological because it is invariant under globally defined, smooth variations of the asymptotic metric. We also exhibit spacetimes where the charge does not vanish and we find dynamical processes that interpolate between regions with different values of these charges.

Regimes of Coherent Intermittency in the Next Quantum Jump of a Multilevel System

In an externally driven multilevel quantum system observation that the NEXT jump has not yet happened affects its future development. In previous work [Phys. Rev. A36, 929 (1987)] it was shown that this class of measurement makes it possible to observe remarkably long dark intervals -- or intermittency -- in the atomic fluorescence of an atom with 3 or more levels. Those calculations were carried out when the driven oscillations or Rabi flopping between the ground state and a strongly fluorescing state were fast compared to its lifetime. In systems with solid state Qubits the accessible parameter space is generally limited to the regime where oscillations are slower than the lifetime. In this paper we evaluate intermittency in atomic transitions, due to measurements with a null result, in this limit. During the dark periods the wave function of the continuously measured multilevel system is coherent.

Notes on Relevant, Irrelevant, Marginal and Extremal Double Trace Perturbations

Double trace deformations, that is products of two local operators, define perturbations of conformal field theories that can be studied exactly in the large-N limit. Even when the double trace deformation is irrelevant in the infrared, it is believed to flow to an ultraviolet fixed point. In this note we define the Kallen-Lehmann representation of the two-point function of a local operator O in a theory perturbed by the square of such operator. We use such representation to discover potential pathologies at intermediate points in the flow that may prevent to reach the UV fixed point. We apply the method to an "extremal" deformation that naively would flow to a UV fixed point where the operator O would saturate the unitarity bound. We find that the UV fixed point is not conformal and that the deformed two-point function propagates unphysical modes. We interpret the result as showing that the flow to the UV fixed point does not exist. This resolves a potential puzzle in the holographic interpretation of the deformation.

Shaving off Black Hole Soft Hair

A recent, intriguing paper by Hawking, Perry and Strominger suggests that soft photons and gravitons can be regarded as black hole hair and may be relevant to the black hole information paradox. In this note we make use of factorization theorems for infrared divergences of the S-matrix to argue that by appropriately dressing in and out hard states, the soft-quanta-dependent part of the S-matrix becomes essentially trivial. The information paradox can be fully formulated in terms of dressed hard states, which do not depend on soft quanta.

${\cal R}^2$ Supergravity

We formulate $R^2$ pure supergravity as a scale invariant theory built only in terms of superfields describing the geometry of curved superspace. The standard supergravity duals are obtained in both "old" and "new" minimal formulations of auxiliary fields. These theories have massless fields in de Sitter space as they do in their non supersymmetric counterpart. Remarkably, the dual theory of $R^2$ supergravity in the new minimal formulation is an extension of the Freedman model, describing a massless gauge field and a massless chiral multiplet in de Sitter space, with inverse radius proportional to the Fayet-Iliopoulos term. This model can be interpreted as the "de-Higgsed" phase of the dual companion theory of $R+R^2$ supergravity.

Effective Planck Mass and the Scale of Inflation

A recent paper argued that it is not possible to infer the energy scale of inflation from the amplitude of tensor fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background, because the usual connection is substantially altered if there are a large number of universally coupled fields present during inflation, with mass less than the inflationary Hubble scale. We give a simple argument demonstrating that this is incorrect.

More on Long String Dynamics in Gravity on AdS3: Spinning Strings and Rotating BTZ

In this paper we study the classical dynamics of long strings in AdS3, generalizing our previous study, arXiv:1410.3424 [hep-th], to rotating strings and BTZ black holes. As in the non-rotating case, BTZ black holes are generated in the large tension limit, in which string back-reaction must be taken into account. When back-reaction is properly accounted for, collapsing heavy, physical, rotating strings do not generate naked singularities but only BTZ black holes, including extremal ones. The rotating string must contain world-sheet excitations in order to have consistent equations of motion; we describe such additional degrees of freedom implicitly in terms of an effective equation of state.

On a Canonical Quantization of 3D Anti de Sitter Pure Gravity

We perform a canonical quantization of pure gravity on AdS3 using as a technical tool its equivalence at the classical level with a Chern-Simons theory with gauge group SL(2,R)xSL(2,R). We first quantize the theory canonically on an asymptotically AdS space --which is topologically the real line times a Riemann surface with one connected boundary. Using the "constrain first" approach we reduce canonical quantization to quantization of orbits of the Virasoro group and Kaehler quantization of Teichmuller space. After explicitly computing the Kaehler form for the torus with one boundary component and after extending that result to higher genus, we recover known results, such as that wave functions of SL(2,R) Chern-Simons theory are conformal blocks. We find new restrictions on the Hilbert space of pure gravity by imposing invariance under large diffeomorphisms and normalizability of the wave function. The Hilbert space of pure gravity is shown to be the target space of Conformal Field Theories with continuous spectrum and a lower bound on operator dimensions. A projection defined by topology changing amplitudes in Euclidean gravity is proposed. It defines an invariant subspace that allows for a dual interpretation in terms of a Liouville CFT. Problems and features of the CFT dual are assessed and a new definition of the Hilbert space, exempt from those problems, is proposed in the case of highly-curved AdS3.

Free boundary conditions and the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence

We show that the recently proposed free boundary conditions for AdS$_3$ are dual to two-dimensional quantum gravity in certain fixed gauges. In particular, we note that an appropriate identification of the generator of Virasoro transformations leads to a vanishing total central charge in agreement with the theory at the boundary. We argue that this identification is necessary to match the bulk and boundary generators of Virasoro transformations and for consistency with the constraint equations.

Long String Dynamics in Pure Gravity on AdS$_3$

We study the classical dynamics of a completion of pure AdS gravity in 3D, whose only degrees of freedom are boundary gravitons and long strings. We argue that the best regime for describing pure gravity is that of "heavy" strings, for which back-reaction effects on the metric must be taken into account. We show that once back-reaction is properly accounted for, regular finite-energy states are produced by heavy strings even in the infinite-tension limit. Such a process is similar to, but different from, nucleation of space out of a "bubble of nothing."

Higher Order Corrections in Minimal Supergravity Models of Inflation

We study higher order corrections in new minimal supergravity models of a single scalar field inflation. The gauging in these models leads to a massive vector multiplet and the D-term potential for the inflaton field with a coupling g^{2} ~ 10^{-10}. In the de-Higgsed phase with vanishing g^2, the chiral and vector multiplets are non-interacting, and the potential vanishes. We present generic manifestly supersymmetric higher order corrections for these models. In particular, for a supersymmetric gravity model -R+ R^2 we derive manifestly supersymmetric corrections corresponding to R^n. The dual version corresponds to a standard supergravity model with a single scalar and a massive vector. It includes, in addition, higher Maxwell curvature/scalar interaction terms of the Born-Infeld type and a modified D-term scalar field potential. We use the dual version of the model to argue that higher order corrections do not affect the last 60 e-foldings of inflation; for example the ξR^4 correction is irrelevant as long as ξ< 10^{24}.

Minimal Supergravity Models of Inflation

We present a superconformal master action for a class of supergravity models with one arbitrary function defining the Jordan frame. It leads to a gauge-invariant action for a real vector multiplet, which upon gauge fixing describes a massive vector multiplet, or to a dual formulation with a linear multiplet and a massive tensor field. In both cases the models have one real scalar, the inflaton, naturally suited for single-field inflation. Vectors and tensors required by supersymmetry to complement a single real scalar do not acquire vev's during inflation, so there is no need to stabilize the extra scalars which are always present in the theories with chiral matter multiplets. The new class of models can describe any inflaton potential which vanishes at its minimum and grows monotonically away from the minimum. In this class of supergravity models one can fit any desirable choice of inflationary parameters n_s and r.

Supersymmetry Breaking by Higher Dimension Operators

We discuss a supersymmetry breaking mechanism for N = 1 theories triggered by higher dimensional op- erators. We consider such operators for real linear and chiral spinor superfields that break superymmetry and reduce to the Volkov-Akulov action. We also consider supersymmetry breaking induced by a higher dimensional operator of a nonminimal scalar (complex linear) multiplet. The latter differs from the stan- dard chiral multiplet in its auxiliary sector, which contains, in addition to the complex scalar auxiliary of a chiral superfield, a complex vector and two spinors auxiliaries. By adding an appropriate higher di- mension operator, the scalar auxiliary may acquire a nonzero vev triggering spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. We find that the spectrum of the theory in the supersymmetry breaking vacuum consists of a free chiral multiplet and a constraint chiral superfield describing the goldstino. Interestingly, the latter turns out to be one of the auxiliary fermions, which becomes dynamical in the supersymmetry breaking vacuum. In all cases we are considering here, there is no sgoldstino mode and thus the goldstino does not have a superpartner. The sgoldstino is decoupled since the goldstino is one of the auxiliaries, which is propagating only in the supersymmetry breaking vacuum. We also point out how higher dimension operators introduce a potential for the propagating scalar of the theory.

Vacuum structure in a chiral R+R^n modification of pure supergravity

We discuss an ${\cal R}+{\cal R}^n$ class of modified ${\cal N}=1$, D=4 supergravity models where the deformation is a monomial ${\cal R}^n\big|_F$ in the chiral scalar curvature multiplet ${\cal R}$ of the "old minimal" auxiliary field formulation. The scalaron and goldstino multiplets are dual to each other in this theory. Since one of them is not dynamical, this theory, as recently shown, cannot be used as the supersymmetric completion of $R+R^n$ gravity. This is confirmed by investigating the scalar potential and its critical points in the dual standard supergravity formulation with a single chiral multiplet with specific Kähler potential and superpotential. We study the vacuum structure of this dual theory and we find that there is always a supersymmetric Minkowski critical point which however is pathological for $n\geq 3$ as it corresponds to a corner ($n=3$) and a cusp ($n>3$) point of the potential. For $n>3$ an anti-de Sitter regular supersymmetric vacuum emerges. As a result, this class of models are not appropriate to describe inflation. We also find the mass spectrum and we provide a general formula for the masses of the scalars of a chiral multiplet around the anti-de Sitter critical point and their relation to $osp(1,4)$ unitary representations.

New Sum Rules from Low Energy Compton Scattering on Arbitrary Spin Target

We derive two sum rules by studying the low energy Compton scattering on a target of arbitrary (nonzero) spin j. In the first sum rule, we consider the possibility that the intermediate state in the scattering can have spin |j \pm 1| and the same mass as the target. The second sum rule applies if the theory at hand possesses intermediate narrow resonances with masses different from the mass of the scatterer. These sum rules are generalizations of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn-Weinberg sum rule. Along with the requirement of tree level unitarity, they relate different low energy couplings in the theory. Using these sum rules, we show that in certain cases the gyromagnetic ratio can differ from the "natural" value g=2, even at tree level, without spoiling perturbative unitarity. These sum rules can be used as constraints applicable to all supergravity and higher-spin theories that contain particles charged under some U(1) gauge field. In particular, applied to four dimensional N=8 supergravity in a spontaneously broken phase, these sum rules suggest that for the theory to have a good ultraviolet behavior, additional massive states need to be present, such as those coming from the embedding of the N=8 supergravity in type II superstring theory. We also discuss the possible implications of the sum rules for QCD in the large-N_c limit.

Nonlinear Dynamics of Parity-Even Tricritical Gravity in Three and Four Dimensions

Recently proposed "multicritical" higher-derivative gravities in Anti de Sitter space carry logarithmic representations of the Anti de Sitter isometry group. While generically non-unitary already at the quadratic, free-theory level, in special cases these theories admit a unitary subspace. The simplest example of such behavior is "tricritical" gravity. In this paper, we extend the study of parity-even tricritical gravity in d = 3, 4 to the first nonlinear order. We show that the would-be unitary subspace suffers from a linearization instability and is absent in the full non-linear theory.

On AdS/CFT without Massless Gravitons

We point out that it is possible to define CFT duals to AdS theories with massive gravitons only. This is achieved by considering the product of two or more CFTs on the boundary, each possessing a large-N expansion and a corresponding bulk dual. It is possible to couple the CFTs through a marginal perturbation that makes all but one of the bulk gravitons massive. In the infinite-N limit for one of the CFTs the massless graviton decouples.

Unitary Truncations and Critical Gravity: a Toy Model

We investigate a higher-derivative scalar field model in a fixed d+1 dimensional AdS background as a toy model for a gravitational dual to a higher-rank logarithmic CFT. The holographic two-point correlation functions on the boundary agree with higher-rank LCFT correlation functions. For odd rank, the theory allows for a truncation to a nontrivial subspace with non-negative scalar product. We discuss possible implications for higher-derivative critical gravity theories.

4D Localization in Randall-Sundrum 2 Supergravity and in Vasiliev Theories

We discuss the problem of localization of 4D massless states in Randall-Sundrum 2 (one-brane) models. A Randall-Sundrum 2 construction starting from N=8 gauged supergravity in 5D Anti de Sitter space gives rise to an N=4 supergravity-matter system. We explicitly show that only the modes of the N=4 graviton supermultiplet localize on the 4D brane, streamlining and generalizing previous works. We also point out that while charged 1/4 BPS black holes do exist in the 4D theory, they are always produced in sets of total charge zero. This zero-charge configuration uplifts to a 5D metric without naked singularities, thus avoiding the curvature singularity of the 5D uplift of an isolated charged BPS black hole. Finally, we resolve a puzzle with localization of massless high spin fields on a (putative) Randall-Sundrum 2 construction based on Vasiliev's high spin theories. We show that while high spin fields do localize, the gauge symmetry that ensures decoupling of their unphysical polarizations is anomalous. This implies that the high spin fields must acquire a mass.

Flux Discharge Cascades in Various Dimensions

We study the dynamics of electric flux discharge by charged particle pair or spherical string or membrane production in various dimensions. When electric flux wraps at least one compact cycle, we find that a single "pair" production event can initiate a cascading decay in real time that "shorts out" the flux and discharges many units of it. This process arises from local dynamics in the compact space, and so is invisible in the dimensionally-reduced truncation. It occurs in theories as simple as the Schwinger model on a circle, and has implications for any theory with compact dimensions and electric flux, including string theories and the string landscape.

Ghosts of Critical Gravity

Recently proposed "critical" higher-derivative gravities in $AdS_D$ $D>3$ are expected to carry logarithmic representation of the Anti de Sitter isometry group. In this note, we quantize linear fluctuations of these critical gravities, which are known to be either identical with linear fluctuations of Einstein's gravity or else satisfy logarithmic boundary conditions at spacial infinity. We identify the scalar product uniquely defined by the symplectic structure implied by the classical action, and show that it does not posses null vectors. Instead, we show that the scalar product between any two Einstein modes vanishes, while the scalar product of an Einstein mode with a logarithmic mode is generically nonzero. This is the basic property of logarithmic representation that makes them neither unitary nor unitarizable.

Notes on a Cure for Higher-Spin Acausality

We present a Lagrangian describing a massive charged spin-2 field and a scalar in a constant electromagnetic background, and we provide a consistent description of the system. The Lagrangian, derived from string field theory through a suitable dimensional reduction, propagates the correct number of degrees of freedom within the light cone in any space-time dimension less than 26. We briefly discuss the higher-spin generalization of this construction, that cures the pathologies of a massive charged particle of arbitrary integer spin by introducing only finitely many new massive degrees of freedom.

String Theory and The Velo-Zwanziger Problem

We examine the behavior of the leading Regge trajectory of the open bosonic string in a uniform electromagnetic background and present a consistent set of Fierz-Pauli conditions for these symmetric tensors that generalizes the Argyres-Nappi spin-2 result. These equations indicate that String Theory does bypass the Velo-Zwanziger problem, i.e. the loss of causality experienced by a massive high-spin field minimally coupled to electromagnetism. Moreover, we provide some evidence that only the first Regge trajectory can be described in isolation and show that the open-string spectrum is free of ghosts in weak constant backgrounds. Finally, we comment on the roles of the critical dimension and of the gyromagnetic ratio.

Topologically Massive Gravity at the Chiral Point is Not Unitary

A recent paper [arXiv:0801.4566] claims that topologically massive gravity contains only chiral boundary excitations at a particular value of the Chern-Simons coupling. On the other hand, propagating bulk degrees of freedom were found even at the chiral point in [arXiv:0803.3998]. The two references use very different methods, making comparison of their respective claims difficult. In this letter, we use the method of [arXiv:0801.4566] to construct a tower of propagating bulk states satisfying standard AdS boundary conditions. Our states have finite norm, with sign opposite to that of right-moving boundary excitations. Our results thus agree with [arXiv:0803.3998] and disagree with [arXiv:0801.4566].

Strong Interactions and Stability in the DGP Model

The model of Dvali, Gabadadze, and Porrati (DGP) gives a simple geometrical setup in which gravity becomes 5-dimensional at distances larger than a length scale λ_{DGP}. We show that this theory has strong interactions at a length scale λ_3 ~ (λ_{DGP}^2 / M_P)^{1/3}. If λ_{DGP} is of order the Hubble length, then the theory loses predictivity at distances shorter than λ_3 ~ 1000 km. The strong interaction can be viewed as arising from a longitudinal `eaten Goldstone' mode that gets a small kinetic term only from mixing with transverse graviton polarizations, analogous to the case of massive gravity. We also present a negative-energy classical solution, which can be avoided by cutting off the theory at the same scale scale λ_3. Finally, we examine the dynamics of the longitudinal Goldstone mode when the background geometry is curved.

Massive Higher Spin States in String Theory and the Principle of Equivalence

In this paper we study three point functions of the Type II superstring involving one graviton and two massive states, focusing in particular on the spin-7/2 fermions at the first mass level. Defining a gravitational quadrupole ``h-factor'', we find that the non-minimal interactions of string states in general are parametrized by $h\ne1$, in contrast to the preferred field theory value of h=1 (for tree-level unitarity). This difference arises from the fact that consistent gravitational interactions of strings are related to the presence of a complete tower of massive states, not present in the ordinary field theory case.

S-Duality in N=4 Yang-Mills Theories with General Gauge Groups,

't Hooft construction of free energy, electric and magnetic fluxes, and of the partition function with twisted boundary conditions, is extended to the case of $N=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories based on arbitrary compact, simple Lie groups. The transformation of the fluxes and the free energy under S-duality is presented. We consider the partition function of $N=4$ for a particular choice of boundary conditions, and compute exactly its leading infrared divergence. We verify that this partition function obeys the transformation laws required by S-duality. This provides independent evidence in favor of S-duality in $N=4$ theories.

String Phase Transitions in a Strong Magnetic Field

We consider open strings in an external constant magnetic field $H$. For an (infinite) sequence of critical values of $H$ an increasing number of (highest spin component) states lying on the first Regge trajectory becomes tachyonic. In the limit of infinite $H$ all these states are tachyons (with a common tachyonic mass) both in the case of the bosonic string and for the Neveu-Schwarz sector of the fermionic string. This result generalizes to extended object the same instability which occurs in ordinary non-Abelian gauge theories. The Ramond states have always positive square masses as is the case for ordinary QED. The weak field limit of the mass spectrum is the same as for a field theory with gyromagnetic ratio $g_S=2$ for all charged spin states. This behavior suggests a phase transition of the string as it has been argued for the ordinary electroweak theory.
