Controllability and Positivity Constraints in Population Dynamics with age, size Structuring and Diffusion

In this article, we consider the infinite dimensional linear control system describing the Population Models Structured by Age, Size, and Spatial Position. The control is localized in the space variable as well as with respect to the age and size. For each control support, we give an estimate of the time needed to control the system to zero. We prove the null controllability of the model, using a technique avoids the explicit use of parabolic Carleman estimates. Indeed, this method combines final-state observability estimates with the use of characteristics and with $L^{\infty}$ estimates of the associated semigroup.

Null Controllability for a Degenerate Structured Population Model

In this paper, we consider the infinite dimensional linear control system describing population models structured by age, size, and spatial position. The diffusion coefficient is degenerate at a point of the domain or both extreme points. Moreover, the control is localized in the space variable as well as with respect to the age and size. For each control support, we give an estimate of the time needed to control the system to zero. We establish the null controllability of the model by using a technique that avoids the explicit use of parabolic Carleman estimates. Indeed, our argument relies on a method that combines final-state observability estimates with the use of the characteristic method.

Internal control for a non-local Schrödinger equation involving the fractional Laplace operator

We analyze the interior controllability problem for a nonlocal Schrödinger equation involving the fractional Laplace operator $(-Δ)^s$, $s\in(0,1)$, on a bounded $C^{1,1}$ domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. The controllability from a neighborhood of the boundary of the domain is obtained for exponents $s$ in the interval $[1/2,1)$, while for $s<1/2$ the equation is shown to be not controllable. The results follow applying the multiplier method, joint with a Pohozaev-type identity for the fractional Laplacian, and from an explicit computation of the spectrum of the operator in the one-dimensional case.

A stochastic approach to the synchronization of coupled oscillators

This paper deals with an optimal control problem associated to the Kuramoto model describing the dynamical behavior of a network of coupled oscillators. Our aim is to design a suitable control function allowing us to steer the system to a synchronized configuration in which all the oscillators are aligned on the same phase. This control is computed via the minimization of a given cost functional associated with the dynamics considered. For this minimization, we propose a novel approach based on the combination of a standard Gradient Descent (GD) methodology with the recently-developed Random Batch Method (RBM) for the efficient numerical approximation of collective dynamics. Our simulations show that the employment of RBM improves the performances of the GD algorithm, reducing the computational complexity of the minimization process and allowing for a more efficient control calculation.

Existence and cost of boundary controls for a degenerate/singular parabolic equation

In this paper, we consider the following degenerate/singular parabolic equation $$ u_t -(x^αu_{x})_x - \fracμ{x^{2-α}} u =0, \qquad x\in (0,1), \ t \in (0,T), $$ where $0\leq α<1$ and $μ\leq (1-α)^2/4$ are two real parameters. We prove the boundary null controllability by means of a $H^1(0,T)$ control acting either at $x=1$ or at the point of degeneracy and singularity $x=0$. Besides we give sharp estimates of the cost of controllability in both cases in terms of the parameters $α$ and $μ$. The proofs are based on the classical moment method by Fattorini and Russell and on recent results on biorthogonal sequences.

Boundary null controllability for a heat equation with general dynamical boundary condition

Let $Ω\subset\mathbb R^N$ be a bounded open set with Lipschitz continuous boundary $Γ$. Let $γ>0$, $δ\ge 0$ be real numbers and $β$ a nonnegative measurable function in $L^\infty(Γ)$. Using some suitable Carleman estimates, we show that the linear heat equation $\partial_tu - γΔu = 0$ in $Ω\times(0,T)$ with the non-homogeneous general dynamic boundary conditions $\partial_tu_Γ -δΔ_Γu_Γ+ γ\partial_νu + βu_Γ = g$ on $Γ\times(0,T)$ is always null controllable from the boundary for every $T>0$ and initial data $(u_0,u_{Γ,0})\in L^2(Ω)\times L^2(Γ)$.

Null controllability for a heat equation with a singular inverse-square potential involving the distance to the boundary function

This article is devoted to the analysis of control properties for a heat equation with singular potential $μ/δ^2$, defined on a bounded $C^2$ domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, where $δ$ is the distance to the boundary function. More precisely, we show that for any $μ\leq 1/4$ the system is exactly null controllable using a distributed control located in any open subset of $Ω$, while for $μ>1/4$ there is no way of preventing the solutions of the equation from blowing-up. The result is obtained applying a new Carleman estimate.
