The role of multi-parton interactions in doubly-heavy hadron production

Beauty and charm quarks are ideal probes of pertubative Quantum Chromodymanics in proton-proton collisions, owing to their large masses. In this paper the role of multi-parton interactions in the production of doubly-heavy hadrons is studied using simulation samples generated with Pythia, a Monte Carlo event generator. Comparisons are made to the stand-alone generators BcVegPy and GenXicc. New methods of speeding up Pythia simulations for events containing heavy quarks are described, enabling the production of large samples with multiple heavy-quark pairs. We show that significantly higher production rates of doubly-heavy hadrons are predicted in models that allow heavy quarks originating from different parton-parton interactions (within the same hadron-hadron collision) to combine to form such hadrons. Quantitative predictions are sensitive to the modelling of colour reconnections. We suggest a set of experimental measurements capable of differentiating these additional contributions.

A Roadmap for HEP Software and Computing R&D for the 2020s

Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.

Method for an unbinned measurement of the $q^2$ dependent decay amplitudes of $\bar{B}^{0}\to \bar{K}^{*0}μ^+μ^-$ decays

A method for determining the $q^2$ dependent $\bar{K}^{*0}$ spin amplitudes of $\bar{B}^{0}\to \bar{K}^{*0}μ^+μ^-$ decays through a maximum likelihood fit to data is presented. While current experimental techniques extract a limited set of observables in bins of $q^2$, our approach allows for the determination of all observable quantities as continuous distributions in $q^2$. By doing this, the method eliminates the need to correct theory predictions of these observables for $q^2$ averaging effects, thus increasing the sensitivity to the effects of physics beyond the Standard Model. Accounting for the symmetries of the angular distribution and using a three parameter ansatz for the $q^2$ dependence of the amplitudes, the precision of the angular observables and the sensitivity to new physics is estimated using simulated events. These studies are based on the sample sizes collected by the LHCb experiment during Run-I and expected for Run-II.

The effect of S-wave interference on the $B^0 \to K^{\ast 0}\ell^+\ell^-$ angular observables

The rare decay $B^0 \to K^{\ast 0}\ell^+\ell^-$ is a flavour changing neutral current decay with a high sensitivity to physics beyond the Standard Model. Nearly all theoretical predictions and all experimental measurements so far have assumed a $K^{\ast 0}$ P-wave that decays into the $K^+π^-$ final state. In this paper the addition of an S-wave within the $K^+π^-$ system of $B^0 \to K^{\ast 0}\ell^+\ell^-$ and the subsequent impact of this on the angular distribution of the final state particles is explored. The inclusion of the S-wave causes a distinction between the values of the angular observables obtained from counting experiments and those obtained from fits to the angular distribution. The effect of a non-zero S-wave on an angular analysis of $B^0 \to K^{\ast 0}\ell^+\ell^-$ is assessed as a function of dataset size and the relative size of the S-wave amplitude. An S-wave contribution, equivalent to what is measured in $B^0 \to J/ψK^{\ast 0}$ at BaBar, leads to a significant bias on the angular observables for datasets of above 200 signal decays. Any future experimental analysis of the $K^+π^-\ell^+\ell^-$ final state will have to take the S-wave contribution into account.

New physics reach of the decay mode $\bar{B} \to \bar{K}^{*0}\ell^+\ell^-$

We present a complete method to construct QCD-protected observables based on the exclusive 4-body $B$-meson decay $\bar{B} \to \bar{K}^{*0}\ell^+\ell^-$ in the low dilepton mass region. The core of the method is the requirement that the constructed quantities should fulfil the symmetries of the angular distribution. We have identified all symmetries of the angular distribution in the limit of massless leptons and explore: a new non-trivial relation between the coefficients of the angular distribution, the possibility to fully solve the system for the $K^{*}$ amplitudes, and the construction of non-trivial observables. We also present a phenomenological analysis of the new physics sensitivity of angular observables in the decay based on QCD factorisation. We further analyse the CP-conserving observables, $A_{T}^{(2)}$, $A_{T}^{(3)}$ and $A_{T}^{(4)}$. They are practically free of theoretical uncertainties due to the soft form factors for the full range of dilepton masses rather than just at a single point as for $A_{FB}$. They also have a higher sensitivity to specific new physics scenarios compared to observables such as $A_{FB}$. Moreover, we critically examine the new physics reach of CP-violating observables via a complete error analysis due to scale dependences, form factors and $Λ/m_b$ corrections. We have developed an ensemble method to evaluate the error on observables from $Λ/m_b$ corrections. Finally, we explore the experimental prospects of CP-violating observables and find that they are rather limited. Indeed, the CP-conserving (averaged) observables $A_{T}^{(i)}$ (with $i=2,3,4$) will offer a better sensitivity to large CP phases and may be more suitable for experimental analysis.

Symmetries in the angular distribution of exclusive semileptonic B decays

We discuss a method to construct observables protected against QCD uncertainties based on the angular distribution of the exclusive Bd -> K(*0}(-> Kpi) l+ l- decay. We focus on the identification and the interpretation of all the symmetries of the distribution. They constitute a key ingredient to construct a set of so-called transverse observables. We work in the framework of QCD factorization at NLO supplemented by an estimate of power-suppressed Lambda/mb corrections. A discussion of the new physics properties of two of the transverse asymmetries, AT^{(2)} and AT^{(5)}, is presented. A comparison between the transverse asymmetry AT^{(2)} and the forward-backward asymmetry shows that AT^{(2)} emerges as an improved version of it.
