The impact of flavour data on global fits of the MFV SMEFT

We investigate the information that can be gained by including flavour data in fits of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) with the assumption of Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV), allowing - as initial conditions at the high scale - leading terms in spurionic Yukawas only. Starting therefore from a theory with no tree level flavour changing neutral currents at the scale of new physics, we calculate effects in flavour changing processes at one loop, and the resulting constraints on linear combinations of SMEFT coefficients, consistently parameterising the electroweak parameters and the CKM within the SMEFT. By doing a global fit including electroweak, Higgs and low energy precision measurements among others, we show that flavour observables put strong constraints on previously unconstrained operator directions. The addition of flavour data produces four independent constraints at order TeV or above on otherwise flat directions; reducing to three when complete U(3)^5 flavour symmetry is assumed. Our findings demonstrate that flavour remains a stringent test for models of new physics, even in the most flavourless scenario.

Resolved $1/m_b$ contributions to $\bar B \to X_{s,d} \ell^+\ell^-$ and $\bar B \to X_s γ$

In view of the importance of the nonperturbative resolved contributions for the overall uncertainties of the two inclusive penguin decays $\bar B \to X_s γ$ and $\bar B \to X_{s,d} \ell^+\ell^-$ we reanalyse these contributions using new estimates of moments of the subleading shape functions and of other input parameters. Within a systematic approach we find a significant reduction of the nonperturbative uncertainties in the inclusive decay $\bar B \to X_{s,d} \ell^+\ell^-$, but a much less pronounced reduction in the inclusive decay $\bar B \to X_s γ$ compared to a recent analysis on the resolved contributions to the inclusive decay $\bar B \to X_s γ$. We identify the reasons for this discrepancy.

Singularities of invariant densities for random switching between two linear ODEs in 2D

We consider a planar dynamical system generated by two stable linear vector fields with distinct fixed points and random switching between them. We characterize singularities of the invariant density in terms of the switching rates and contraction rates. We prove boundedness away from those singularities. We also discuss some motivating biological examples.

Flavour, Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and Dark Matter: state of the art and future prospects

With the discovery of the Higgs boson the Standard Model has become a complete and comprehensive theory, which has been verified with unparalleled precision and in principle might be valid at all scales. However, several reasons remain why we firmly believe that there should be physics beyond the Standard Model. Experiments such as the LHC, new $B$ factories, and earth- and space-based astro-particle experiments provide us with unique opportunities to discover a coherent framework for many of the long-standing puzzles of our field. Here we explore several significant interconnections between the physics of the Higgs boson, the physics of flavour, and the experimental clues we have about dark matter.

Inclusive B -> X_s l^+ l^-: Complete angular analysis and a thorough study of collinear photons

We investigate logarithmically enhanced electromagnetic corrections of all angular observables in inclusive B -> X_s l^+ l^-. We present analytical results, which are supplemented by a dedicated Monte Carlo study on the treatment of collinear photons in order to determine the size of the electromagnetic logarithms. We then give the Standard Model predictions of all observables, considering all available NNLO QCD, NLO QED and power corrections, and investigate their sensitivity to New Physics. Since the structure of the double differential decay rate is modified in the presence of QED corrections, we also propose new observables which vanish if only QCD corrections are taken into account. Moreover, we study the experimental sensitivity to these new observables at Belle II.

B ->K*ll: The New Frontier of New Physics searches in Flavor

The exclusive decay mode B ->K*ll has become one of the key players in the search for New Physics in flavor. An increasing number of observables are being studied experimentally, and with increasing precision. Its theoretical description is well under control, and an interesting set of clean observables have been identified, reducing further the theoretical uncertainties. Model-independent analyses show that in the near future this mode will either reveal NP through a pattern of correlated deviations from the SM, or pose very stringent constraints on radiative and semileptonic operators.

Optimizing the basis of B->K*ll observables in the full kinematic range

We discuss the observables for the B->K*(->K pi)ll decay, focusing on both CP-averaged and CP-violating observables at large and low hadronic recoil with special emphasis on their low sensitivity to form-factor uncertainties. We identify an optimal basis of observables that balances theoretical and experimental advantages, which will guide the New Physics searches in the short term. We discuss some advantages of the observables in the basis, and in particular their improved sensitivity to New Physics compared to other observables. We present predictions within the Standard Model for the observables of interest, integrated over the appropriate bins including lepton mass corrections. Finally, we present bounds on the S-wave contribution to the distribution coming from the B->K_0*ll decay, which will help to establish the systematic error associated to this pollution.

Complete next-to-leading order gluino contributions to b--> s gamma and b--> s g

We present the first complete order alpha_s corrections to the Wilson coefficients (at the high scale) of the various versions of magnetic and chromomagnetic operators which are induced by a squark-gluino exchange. For this matching calculation, we work out the on-shell amplitudes b--> s gamma and b --> s g, both in the full and in the effective theory up to order alpha_s^2. The most difficult part of the calculation is the evaluation of the two-loop diagrams in the full theory; these can be split into two classes: a) diagrams with one gluino and a virtual gluon; b) diagrams with two gluinos or with one gluino and a four-squark vertex. Accordingly, the Wilson coefficients can be split into a part a) and a part b). While part b) of the Wilson coefficients is presented in this paper for the first time, part a) was given in (Bobeth et al.). We checked their results for the coefficients of the magnetic operators and found perfect agreement. Moreover, we work out the renormalization procedure in great detail. Our results for the complete next-to-leading order Wilson coefficients are fully analytic, but far too long to be printed. We therefore publish them in the form of a C++ program. They constitute a crucial building block for the phenomenological next-to-leading logarithmic analysis of the branching ratio Bbar --> X_s gamma in a supersymmetric model beyond minimal flavor violation.

New physics reach of the decay mode $\bar{B} \to \bar{K}^{*0}\ell^+\ell^-$

We present a complete method to construct QCD-protected observables based on the exclusive 4-body $B$-meson decay $\bar{B} \to \bar{K}^{*0}\ell^+\ell^-$ in the low dilepton mass region. The core of the method is the requirement that the constructed quantities should fulfil the symmetries of the angular distribution. We have identified all symmetries of the angular distribution in the limit of massless leptons and explore: a new non-trivial relation between the coefficients of the angular distribution, the possibility to fully solve the system for the $K^{*}$ amplitudes, and the construction of non-trivial observables. We also present a phenomenological analysis of the new physics sensitivity of angular observables in the decay based on QCD factorisation. We further analyse the CP-conserving observables, $A_{T}^{(2)}$, $A_{T}^{(3)}$ and $A_{T}^{(4)}$. They are practically free of theoretical uncertainties due to the soft form factors for the full range of dilepton masses rather than just at a single point as for $A_{FB}$. They also have a higher sensitivity to specific new physics scenarios compared to observables such as $A_{FB}$. Moreover, we critically examine the new physics reach of CP-violating observables via a complete error analysis due to scale dependences, form factors and $Λ/m_b$ corrections. We have developed an ensemble method to evaluate the error on observables from $Λ/m_b$ corrections. Finally, we explore the experimental prospects of CP-violating observables and find that they are rather limited. Indeed, the CP-conserving (averaged) observables $A_{T}^{(i)}$ (with $i=2,3,4$) will offer a better sensitivity to large CP phases and may be more suitable for experimental analysis.

Radiative and Electroweak Penguin Decays of B Mesons

The huge datasets collected at the two B factories, Belle and BaBar, have made it possible to explore the radiative penguin process b --> s gamma, the electroweak penguin process b --> s l+ l- and the suppressed radiative process b --> d gamma in detail, all in exclusive channels and inclusive measurements. Theoretical tools have also advanced to meet or surpass the experimental precision, especially in inclusive calculations and the various ratios of exclusive channels. In this article, we review the theoretical and experimental progress over the past decade in the radiative and electroweak penguin decays of B mesons.

Symmetries in the angular distribution of exclusive semileptonic B decays

We discuss a method to construct observables protected against QCD uncertainties based on the angular distribution of the exclusive Bd -> K(*0}(-> Kpi) l+ l- decay. We focus on the identification and the interpretation of all the symmetries of the distribution. They constitute a key ingredient to construct a set of so-called transverse observables. We work in the framework of QCD factorization at NLO supplemented by an estimate of power-suppressed Lambda/mb corrections. A discussion of the new physics properties of two of the transverse asymmetries, AT^{(2)} and AT^{(5)}, is presented. A comparison between the transverse asymmetry AT^{(2)} and the forward-backward asymmetry shows that AT^{(2)} emerges as an improved version of it.

Correlations between high-p_T and flavour physics

Squark and gluino decays are governed by the same mixing matrices as the contributions to flavour violating loop transitions of B-mesons. This allows for possible direct correlations between flavour non-diagonal observables in B and high-p_T physics. The present bounds on squark mixing, induced by the low-energy data on b to s transitions, still allow for large contributions to flavour violating squark decays at tree level. Due to the restrictions in flavour tagging at the LHC, additional information from future flavour experiments will be necessary to interpret those LHC data properly. Also the measurement of correlations between various squark decay modes at a future ILC would provide information about the flavour violating parameters.

Status of SM calculations of b > s transitions

We report recent progress in SM calculations of $b \to s$ transitions. We discuss the first NNLL prediction of the $\bar B \to X_s γ$ branching ratio, including important additional subtleties due to non-perturbative corrections and logarithmically-enhanced cut effects, and also recent results on the inclusive mode $\bar B \to X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$. Moreover, new results on the corresponding exclusive modes are reviewed. Finally, we comment on the present status of the so-called $B \to K π$ puzzle in hadronic $b \to s$ transitions

The B --> pi form factor from light-cone sum rules in soft-collinear effective theory

Recently, we have derived light-cone sum rules for exclusive B-meson decays into light energetic hadrons from correlation functions within soft-collinear effective theory. In these sum rules the short-distance scale refers to ``hard-collinear'' interactions with virtualities of order Λ_{QCD} m_b. Hard scales (related to virtualities of order m_b^2) are integrated out and enter via external coefficient functions in the sum rule. Soft dynamics is encoded in light-cone distribution amplitudes for the B-meson, which describe both the factorizable and non-factorizable contributions to exclusive B-meson decay amplitudes. Factorization of the correlation function has been verified to one-loop accuracy. Thus, a systematic separation of hard, hard-collinear, and soft dynamics in the heavy-quark limit is possible.

Comments on the Gauge Fixed BRST Cohomology and the Quantum Noether Method

We discuss in detail the relation between the gauge fixed and gauge invariant BRST cohomology. We showed previously that in certain gauges some cohomology classes of the gauge-fixed BRST differential do not correspond to gauge invariant observables. We now show that in addition ``accidental'' conserved currents may appear. These correspond one-to-one to observables that become trivial in this gauge. We explicitly show how the gauge-fixed BRST cohomology appears in the context of the Quantum Noether Method.

On Exclusive and Inclusive Rare B Decays: CKM Phenomenology and New Physics Reach

We report recent results in rare B decays. Our focus will be on b -> d gamma and b -> s l^+ l^- transitions. We discuss their impact on the CKM phenomenology and their role within our search for new physics. In particular, we analyse the impact of a recent lattice QCD estimate of the B -> K* form factor at zero recoil. We also briefly discuss the presently available optimal theoretical tools for the inclusive and exclusive modes.

Present Status of Inclusive Rare B Decays

We give a status report on inclusive rare B decays, highlighting recent developments and open problems. We focus on the decay modes $B \to X_{s,d} γ$, $ B \to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ and $B \to X_s ν\bar ν$ and on their role in the search for new physics. Most of the inclusive rare B decays are important modes of flavour physics due to the small hadronic uncertainties. They can be regarded as laboratories to search for new physics. We collect the experimental data already available from CLEO and the $B$ factories BABAR and BELLE. We review the NLL and NNLL QCD calculations of the inclusive decay rates that were recently completed, and discuss future prospects, especially the issue of the charm mass scheme ambiguity. Finally, we analyse the phenomenological impact of these decay modes, in particular on the CKM phenomenology and on the indirect search for supersymmetry. We also briefly discuss direct CP violation in inclusive rare B decays, as well as the rare kaon decays $K^+\to π^+ν\barν$ and $K_L \to π^0 ν\barν$, which offer complementary theoretically clean information.

Bounds on flavour violating parameters in supersymmetry

We investigate the constraints on the flavour violating parameters from the decay B --> X_s gamma, taking into account the interplay of the various sources of flavour violation in the unconstrained MSSM. We present a systematic leading logarithmic QCD analysis of these model-independent constraints, including contributions from gluinos, neutralinos, charginos, charged Higgs bosons and interferences between them. We show that two simple combinations of elements of the down squark mass matrix are stringently bounded over large parts of the parameter space where only weak assumptions on the hierarchical structure of the squark mass matrices are made. We also briefly analyse up to which values SUSY contributions, compatible with B --> X_s gamma, can enhance the Wilson coefficient C_8(m_W), which plays an important role in the phenomenology of charmless hadronic B decays.

CP Asymmetries in $b \to (s/d)$ Transitions as a Test of CKM CP Violation

We point out that a simple test of the mechanism of CP violation can be performed by a measurement of the CP asymmetries in exclusive and inclusive radiative rare decays. We show that the rate asymmetries $ΔΓ= Γ(B^- \to f γ) - Γ(B^+ \to \bar{f} γ)$} for certain final states $f$ can be predicted in a theoretically clean way. Some implications for $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays are discussed.

Direct CP Violation In Radiative B Decays

We discuss the role of the radiative B decays $B \to X_{s/d} γ$ in our search for new physics focusing on the issue of direct CP violation. We discuss in some detail a SM prediction for the CP asymmetries in inclusive $b \to s/d$ transitions, namely $\mid Δ{\cal B}(B \to X_s γ) + Δ{\cal B}(B \to X_d γ) \mid \sim 1 \cdot 10^{-9}$. Any measured value in significant deviation of this estimate would indicate new sources of CP violation beyond the CKM phase.

The $c \to u γ$ Contribution to Weak Radiative Charm Decay

The $c \to u γ$ transition does not occur at the tree level in the Standard Model and is strongly GIM-suppressed at one loop. The leading QCD logarithms are known to enhance the amplitude by two orders of magnitude. We point out that the amplitude increases further by two orders of magnitude after including the complete 2-loop QCD contributions. Nevertheless, $ΔS =0$ radiative decays of charmed hadrons remain dominated by the $c \to d \bar{d} u γ$ and $c \to s \bar{s} u γ$ quark subprocesses.

The Quantum Noether Condition in terms of interacting fields

We review our recent work, hep-th/9803030, on the constraints imposed by global or local symmetries on perturbative quantum field theories. The analysis is performed in the Bogoliubov-Shirkov-Epstein-Glaser formulation of perturbative quantum field theory. In this formalism the S-matrix is constructed directly in the asymptotic Fock space with only input causality and Poincare invariance. We reformulate the symmetry condition proposed in our earlier work in terms of interacting Noether currents.

A Note on Slavnov-Taylor Identities in the Causal Epstein-Glaser Approach

An alternative approach to perturbative Yang-Mills theories in four (3+1) dimensional space-time based on the causal Epstein-Glaser method in QFT was recently proposed. In this short note we show that the set of identities between C-number distributions expressing nonabelian gauge invariance in the causal approach imply identities which are analogous to the well-known Slavnov-Taylor identities. We explicitly derive the Z-factor relations at one-loop level.
