Isothermic triangulated surfaces

We found a class of triangulated surfaces in Euclidean space which have similar properties as isothermic surfaces in Differential Geometry. We call a surface isothermic if it admits an infinitesimal isometric deformation preserving the mean curvature integrand locally. We show that this class is Möbius invariant. Isothermic triangulated surfaces can be characterized either in terms of circle patterns or based on conformal equivalence of triangle meshes. This definition generalizes isothermic quadrilateral meshes. A consequence is a discrete analog of minimal surfaces. Here the Weierstrass data needed to construct a discrete minimal surface consist of a triangulated plane domain and a discrete harmonic function.

Discrete conformal maps and ideal hyperbolic polyhedra

We establish a connection between two previously unrelated topics: a particular discrete version of conformal geometry for triangulated surfaces, and the geometry of ideal polyhedra in hyperbolic three-space. Two triangulated surfaces are considered discretely conformally equivalent if the edge lengths are related by scale factors associated with the vertices. This simple definition leads to a surprisingly rich theory featuring Möbius invariance, the definition of discrete conformal maps as circumcircle preserving piecewise projective maps, and two variational principles. We show how literally the same theory can be reinterpreted to addresses the problem of constructing an ideal hyperbolic polyhedron with prescribed intrinsic metric. This synthesis enables us to derive a companion theory of discrete conformal maps for hyperbolic triangulations. It also shows how the definitions of discrete conformality considered here are closely related to the established definition of discrete conformality in terms of circle packings.

Holomorphic vector fields and quadratic differentials on planar triangular meshes

Given a triangulated region in the complex plane, a discrete vector field $Y$ assigns a vector $Y_i\in \mathbb{C}$ to every vertex. We call such a vector field holomorphic if it defines an infinitesimal deformation of the triangulation that preserves length cross ratios. We show that each holomorphic vector field can be constructed based on a discrete harmonic function in the sense of the cotan Laplacian. Moreover, to each holomorphic vector field we associate in a Möbius invariant fashion a certain holomorphic quadratic differential. Here a quadratic differential is defined as an object that assigns a purely imaginary number to each interior edge. Then we derive a Weierstrass representation formula, which shows how a holomorphic quadratic differential can be used to construct a discrete minimal surface with prescribed Gauß map and prescribed Hopf differential.

Conformal deformations of immersed discs in $R^3$ and elliptic boundary value problems

Boundary value problems for operators of Dirac type arise naturally in connection with the conformal geometry of surfaces immersed in Euclidean 3--space. Recently such boundary value problems have been successfully applied to a variety of problems from computer graphics. Here we investigate under which conditions these boundary value problems are elliptic and self--adjoint. We show that under certain periodic deformations of the boundary data our operators exhibit non-trivial spectral flow.

Elastic strips

Motivated by the problem of finding an explicit description of a developable narrow Moebius strip of minimal bending energy, which was first formulated by M. Sadowsky in 1930, we will develop the theory of elastic strips. Recently E.L. Starostin and G.H.M. van der Heijden found a numerical description for an elastic Moebius strip, but did not give an integrable solution. We derive two conservation laws, which describe the equilibrium equations of elastic strips. In applying these laws we find two new classes of integrable elastic strips which correspond to spherical elastic curves. We establish a connection between Hopf tori and force--free strips, which are defined by one of the integrable strips, we have found. We introduce the P--functional and relate it to elastic strips.

The spectral curve of a quaternionic holomorphic line bundle over a 2-torus

A conformal immersion of a 2-torus into the 4-sphere is characterized by an auxiliary Riemann surface, its spectral curve. This complex curve encodes the monodromies of a certain Dirac type operator on a quaternionic line bundle associated to the immersion. The paper provides a detailed description of the geometry and asymptotic behavior of the spectral curve. If this curve has finite genus the Dirichlet energy of a map from a 2-torus to the 2-sphere or the Willmore energy of an immersion from a 2-torus into the 4-sphere is given by the residue of a specific meromorphic differential on the curve. Also, the kernel bundle of the Dirac type operator evaluated over points on the 2-torus linearizes in the Jacobian of the spectral curve. Those results are presented in a geometric and self contained manner.

Discrete holomorphic geometry I. Darboux transformations and spectral curves

Finding appropriate notions of discrete holomorphic maps and, more generally, conformal immersions of discrete Riemann surfaces into 3-space is an important problem of discrete differential geometry and computer visualization. We propose an approach to discrete conformality that is based on the concept of holomorphic line bundles over "discrete surfaces", by which we mean the vertex sets of triangulated surfaces with bi-colored set of faces. The resulting theory of discrete conformality is simultaneously Moebius invariant and based on linear equations. In the special case of maps into the 2-sphere we obtain a reinterpretation of the theory of complex holomorphic functions on discrete surfaces introduced by Dynnikov and Novikov. As an application of our theory we introduce a Darboux transformation for discrete surfaces in the conformal 4-sphere. This Darboux transformation can be interpreted as the space- and time-discrete Davey-Stewartson flow of Konopelchenko and Schief.
