Conformal deformations of immersed discs in $R^3$ and elliptic boundary value problems

Boundary value problems for operators of Dirac type arise naturally in connection with the conformal geometry of surfaces immersed in Euclidean 3--space. Recently such boundary value problems have been successfully applied to a variety of problems from computer graphics. Here we investigate under which conditions these boundary value problems are elliptic and self--adjoint. We show that under certain periodic deformations of the boundary data our operators exhibit non-trivial spectral flow.

Euclidean minimal tori with planar ends and elliptic solitons

A Euclidean minimal torus with planar ends gives rise to an immersed Willmore torus in the conformal 3--sphere $S^3=\R^3\cup \{\infty\}$. The class of Willmore tori obtained this way is given a spectral theoretic characterization as the class of Willmore tori with reducible spectral curve. A spectral curve of this type is necessarily the double of the spectral curve of an elliptic KP soliton. The simplest possible examples of minimal tori with planar ends are related to 1--gap Lamé potentials, the simplest non--trivial algebro geometric KdV potentials. If one allows for translational periods, Riemann's "staircase" minimal surfaces appear as other examples related to 1--gap Lamé potentials.

Spectral curves for Cauchy-Riemann operators on punctured elliptic curves

We show that one can define a spectral curve for the Cauchy-Riemann operator on a punctured elliptic curve if one imposes appropriate boundary conditions. Algebraic curves of the type thus obtained appear as irreducible components of spectral curves of minimal tori with planar ends in R^3. It appears that these curves coincide with the spectral curves of certain elliptic KP solitons as studied by Krichever.

Bryant Surfaces with Smooth Ends

A smooth end of a Bryant surface is a conformally immersed punctured disc of mean curvature 1 in hyperbolic space that extends smoothly through the ideal boundary. The Bryant representation of a smooth end is well defined on the punctured disc and has a pole at the puncture. The Willmore energy of compact Bryant surfaces with smooth ends is quantized. It equals 4Pi times the total pole order of its Bryant representation. The possible Willmore energies of Bryant spheres with smooth ends are 4Pi*d where d is a positive integer different from 2,3,5,7. Bryant spheres with smooth ends are examples of soliton spheres, a class of rational conformal immersions of the sphere which also includes Willmore spheres in the conformal 3-sphere. We give explicit examples of Bryant spheres with an arbitrary number of smooth ends. We conclude the paper by showing that Bryant's quartic differential Q vanishes identically for a compact surface in the 3-sphere if and only if it is the compactification of either a complete finite total curvature Euclidean minimal surface with planar ends or a compact Bryant surface with smooth ends.

Soliton Spheres

Soliton spheres are immersed 2-spheres in the conformal 4-sphere S^4=HP^1 that allow rational, conformal parametrizations f:CP^1->HP^1 obtained via twistor projection and dualization from rational curves in CP^{2n+1}. Soliton spheres can be characterized as the case of equality in the quaternionic Pluecker estimate. A special class of soliton spheres introduced by Taimanov are immersions into R^3 with rotationally symmetric Weierstrass potentials that are related to solitons of the mKdV-equation via the ZS-AKNS linear problem. We show that Willmore spheres and Bryant spheres with smooth ends are further examples of soliton spheres. The possible values of the Willmore energy for soliton spheres in the 3-sphere are proven to be W=4pi*d with d a positive integer but not 2,3,5, or 7. The same quantization was previously known individually for each of the three special classes of soliton spheres mentioned above.

The spectral curve of a quaternionic holomorphic line bundle over a 2-torus

A conformal immersion of a 2-torus into the 4-sphere is characterized by an auxiliary Riemann surface, its spectral curve. This complex curve encodes the monodromies of a certain Dirac type operator on a quaternionic line bundle associated to the immersion. The paper provides a detailed description of the geometry and asymptotic behavior of the spectral curve. If this curve has finite genus the Dirichlet energy of a map from a 2-torus to the 2-sphere or the Willmore energy of an immersion from a 2-torus into the 4-sphere is given by the residue of a specific meromorphic differential on the curve. Also, the kernel bundle of the Dirac type operator evaluated over points on the 2-torus linearizes in the Jacobian of the spectral curve. Those results are presented in a geometric and self contained manner.

Constant mean curvature tori as stationary solutions to the Davey-Stewartson equation

A well known result of Da Rios and Levi-Civita says that a closed planar curve is elastic if and only if it is stationary under the localized induction (or smoke ring) equation, where stationary means that the evolution under the localized induction equation is by rigid motions. We prove an analogous result for surfaces: an immersion of a torus into the conformal 3-sphere has constant mean curvature with respect to a space form subgeometry if and only if it is stationary under the Davey-Stewartson flow.

Constrained Willmore Tori in the 4--Sphere

We prove that a constrained Willmore immersion of a 2-torus into the conformal 4-sphere is either of "finite type", that is, has a spectral curve of finite genus, or is of "holomorphic type" which means that it is super conformal or Euclidean minimal with planar ends. This implies that all constrained Willmore tori in the 4-sphere can be constructed rather explicitly by methods of complex algebraic geometry. The proof uses quaternionic holomorphic geometry in combination with integrable systems methods similar to those of Hitchin's approach to the study of harmonic tori in the 3-sphere.

Discrete holomorphic geometry I. Darboux transformations and spectral curves

Finding appropriate notions of discrete holomorphic maps and, more generally, conformal immersions of discrete Riemann surfaces into 3-space is an important problem of discrete differential geometry and computer visualization. We propose an approach to discrete conformality that is based on the concept of holomorphic line bundles over "discrete surfaces", by which we mean the vertex sets of triangulated surfaces with bi-colored set of faces. The resulting theory of discrete conformality is simultaneously Moebius invariant and based on linear equations. In the special case of maps into the 2-sphere we obtain a reinterpretation of the theory of complex holomorphic functions on discrete surfaces introduced by Dynnikov and Novikov. As an application of our theory we introduce a Darboux transformation for discrete surfaces in the conformal 4-sphere. This Darboux transformation can be interpreted as the space- and time-discrete Davey-Stewartson flow of Konopelchenko and Schief.
