$2d$ Sigma Models and Geometry

Supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models have target spaces that carry interesting geometry. The geometry is richer the more supersymmetries the model has. The study of models with two dimensional world sheets is particularly rewarding since they allow for torsionful geometries. In this review I describe and exemplify the relation of $2d$ supersymmetry to Riemannian, complex, bihermitian, $(p,q)$ Hermitean, Kähler, hyperkähler, generalised geometry and more

Killing-Yano Cotton Currents

We discuss conserved currents constructed from the Cotton tensor and (conformal) Killing-Yano tensors (KYTs). We consider the corresponding charges generally and then exemplify with the four-dimensional Plebański-Demiański metric where they are proportional to the sum of the squares of the electric and the magnetic charges. As part of the derivation, we also find the two conformal Killing-Yano tensors of the Plebański-Demiański metric in the recently introduced coordinates of Podolsky and Vratny. The construction of asymptotic charges for the Cotton current is elucidated and compared to the three-dimensional construction in Topologically Massive Gravity. For the three-dimensional case, we also give a conformal superspace multiplet that contains the Cotton current in the bosonic sector. In a mathematical section, we derive potentials for the currents, find identities for conformal KYTs and for KYTs in torsionful backgrounds.

Covariant Hamiltonians, sigma models and supersymmetry

We introduce a phase space with spinorial momenta, corresponding to fermionic derivatives, for a 2d supersymmetric (1, 1) sigma model. We show that there is a generalisation of the covariant De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian formulation on this phase space with canonical equations equivalent to the Lagrangian formulation, find the corresponding multisymplectic form and Hamiltonian multivectors. The covariance of the formulation makes it possible to see how additional non-manifest supersymmetries arise in analogy to those of the Lagrangian formulation. We then observe that an intermediate phase space Lagrangian defined on the sum of the tangent and cotanget spaces is a first order Lagrangian for the sigma model and derive additional supersymmetries for this.

The Generalised Complex Geometry of $(p,q)$ Hermitian Geometries

We define $(p,q)$ hermitian geometry as the target space geometry of the two dimensional $(p,q)$ supersymmetric sigma model. This includes generalised Kähler geometry for $(2,2)$, generalised hyperkähler geometry for $(4,2)$, strong Kähler with torsion geometry for $(2,1)$ and strong hyperkähler with torsion geometry for $(4,1)$. We provide a generalised complex geometry formulation of hermitian geometry, generalising Gualtieri's formulation of the $(2,2)$ case. Our formulation involves a chiral version of generalised complex structure and we provide explicit formulae for the map to generalised geometry.

Semichirals and Four Dimensional Geometry

Semichiral $(2,2)$ sigma models with $4d$ target space are discussed. A novel description in $(1,1)$ superspace allows an analysis of possible extended supersymmetries. It is argued that a manifest semichiral realization of an extra supersymmetry is only possible for hyperkähler target geometry. A semichiral formulation of the $SU(2)\otimes U(1)$ WZW model is seemingly a counterexample to this. After deriving the extra supersymmetries of this model in $(1,1)$ superspace it is shown that they cannot be lifted to transformations of semichirals in $(2,2)$ superspace.

Semichiral Sigma Models with 4D Hyperkaehler Geometry

Semichiral sigma models with a four-dimensional target space do not support extended N=(4,4) supersymmetries off-shell arXiv:0903.2376, arXiv:0912.4724. We contribute towards the understanding of the non-manifest on-shell transformations in (2,2) superspace by analyzing the extended on-shell supersymmetry of such models and find that a rather general ansatz for the additional supersymmetry (not involving central charge transformations) leads to hyperkähler geometry. We give non-trivial examples of these models.

A Picture of D-branes at Strong Coupling

We use a phase space description to (re)derive a first order form of the Born-Infeld action for D-branes. This derivation also makes it possible to consider the limit where the tension of the D-brane goes to zero. We find that in this limit, which can be considered to be the strong coupling limit of the fundamental string theory, the world-volume of the D-brane generically splits into a collection of tensile strings.

Rotating Dilaton Black Holes

We consider the axially symmetric coupled system of gravitation, electromagnetism and a dilaton field. Reducing from four to three dimensions, the system is described by gravity coupled to a non-linear $σ$-model. We find the target space isometries and use them to generate new solutions. It seems that it is only possible to generate rotating solutions from non-rotating ones for the special cases when the dilaton coupling parameter $a=0, \pm \sqrt{3}$. For those particular values, the target space symmetry is enlarged.

From the Superparticle Path Integral to Superfield Theory

We investigate the hitherto unexplored relation between the superparticle path integral and superfield theory. Requiring that the path integral has the global symmetries of the classical action and obeys the natural composition property of path integrals, and also that the discretized action has the correct naive continuum limit, we find a viable discretization of the (D=3,N=2) free superparticle action. The resulting propagator is not the usual superfield one. We extend the discretization to include the coupling to an external gauge supermultiplet and use this to show the equivalence to superfield theory. This is possible since we are able to reformulate the superfield perturbation theory in terms of our new propagator.

The Zero Tension Limit of Strings and Superstrings

The string equivalent of a massless particle ($m=0$) is the tensionless string ($T=0$). The study of such strings is of interest when trying to understand the high energy limit of ordinary strings. I discuss the classical $T\to 0$ limit of the bosonic string, the spinning string and the superstring. A common feature is the appearence of a space-time (super-)conformal symmetry replacing the world-sheet Weyl invariance. The question of whether this symmetry may survive quantization is addressed. A lightcone analysis of the quantized bosonic tensionless string leads to severe constraints on the physical states: they are space-time diffeomorphism singlets characterized by their topological properties only.
