Numerical computation of Neumann controls for the heat equation on a finite interval

This paper presents a new numerical method which approximates Neumann type null controls for the heat equation and is based on the Fokas method. This is a direct method for solving problems originating from the control theory, which allows the realisation of an efficient numerical algorithm that requires small computational effort for determining the null control with exponentially small error. Furthermore, the unified character of the Fokas method makes the extension of the numerical algorithm to a wide range of other linear PDEs and different type of boundary conditions straightforward.

Decay rate estimates for the wave equation with subcritical semilinearities and locally distributed nonlinear dissipation

We study the stabilization and the wellposedness of solutions of the wave equation with subcritical semilinearities and locally distributed nonlinear dissipation. The novelty of this paper is that we deal with the difficulty that the main equation does not have good nonlinear structure amenable to a direct proof of a priori bounds and a desirable observability inequality. It is well known that observability inequalities play a critical role in characterizing the long time behaviour of solutions of evolution equations, which is the main goal of this study. In order to address this, we truncate the nonlinearities, and thereby construct approximate solutions for which it is possible to obtain a priori bounds and prove the essential observability inequality. The treatment of these approximate solutions is still a challenging task and requires the use of Strichartz estimates and some microlocal analysis tools such as microlocal defect measures. We include an appendix on the latter topic here to make the article self contained and supplement details to proofs of some of the theorems which can be found in the lecture notes of Burq and Gérard (2001). Once we establish essential observability properties for the approximate solutions, it is not difficult to prove that the solution of the original problem also possesses a similar feature via a delicate passage to limit. In the last part of the paper, we establish various decay rate estimates for different growth conditions on the nonlinear dissipative effect. We in particular generalize the known results on the subject to a considerably larger class of dissipative effects.

The interior-boundary Strichartz estimate for the Schrödinger equation on the half line revisited

It was shown by the second author in (CPAA, 2019) for the biharmonic Schrödinger equation and most recently by Himonas and Mantzavinos (Nonlinearity, 2020) for 2D Schrödinger equation that Fokas method based formulas are capable of defining weak solutions of associated nonlinear initial boundary value problems (ibvps) below the Banach algebra threshold. In view of these results, we revisit the theory of interior-boundary Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger equation posed on the right half line, considering both Dirichlet and Neumann cases. Finally, we apply these estimates to obtain low regularity solutions for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with Neumann boundary condition and a coupled system of NLS equations defined on the half line with Dirichlet/Neumann boundary conditions.

Stabilization of higher order Schrödinger equations on a finite interval: Part II

Backstepping based controller and observer models were designed for higher order linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equations on a finite interval in Part I of this study where the controller was assumed to be acting from the left endpoint of the medium. In this companion paper, we further the analysis by considering boundary controller(s) acting at the right endpoint of the domain. It turns out that the problem is more challenging in this scenario as the associated boundary value problem for the backstepping kernel becomes overdetermined and lacks a smooth solution. The latter is essential to switch back and forth between the original plant and the so called target system. To overcome this difficulty we rely on the strategy of using an imperfect kernel, namely one of the boundary conditions in kernel PDE model is disregarded. The drawback is that one loses rapid stabilization in comparison with the left endpoint controllability. Nevertheless, the exponential decay of the $L^2$-norm with a certain rate still holds. The observer design is associated with new challenges from the point of view of wellposedness and one has to prove smoothing properties for an associated initial boundary value problem with inhomogeneous boundary data. This problem is solved by using Laplace transform in time. However, the Bromwich integral that inverts the transformed solution is associated with certain analyticity issues which are treated through a subtle analysis. Numerical algorithms and simulations verifying the theoretical results are given.

Stabilization of higher order Schrödinger equations on a finite interval: Part I

We study the backstepping stabilization of higher order linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equations on a finite interval, where the boundary feedback acts from the left Dirichlet boundary condition. The plant is stabilized with a prescribed rate of decay. The construction of the backstepping kernel is based on a challenging successive approximation analysis. This contrasts with the case of second order pdes. Second, we consider the case where the full state of the system cannot be measured at all times but some partial information such as measurements of a boundary trace are available. For this problem, we simultaneously construct an observer and the associated backstepping controller which is capable of stabilizing the original plant. Wellposedness and regularity results are provided for all pde models. Although the linear part of the model is similar to the KdV equation, the power type nonlinearity brings additional difficulties. We give two examples of boundary conditions and partial measurements. We also present numerical algorithms and simulations verifying our theoretical results to the fullest extent. Our numerical approach is novel in the sense that we solve the target systems first and obtain the solution to the feedback system by using the bounded invertibility of the backstepping transformation.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the half-line with nonlinear boundary condition

In this paper, we study the initial boundary value problem for nonlinear Schrödinger equations on the half-line with nonlinear boundary conditions of type $u_x(0,t)+λ|u(0,t)|^ru(0,t)=0,$ $λ\in\mathbb{R}-\{0\}$, $r> 0$. We discuss the local well-posedness when the initial data $u_0=u(x,0)$ belongs to an $L^2$-based inhomogeneous Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb{R}_+)$ with $s\in \left(\frac{1}{2},\frac{7}{2}\right)-\{\frac{3}{2}\}$. We deal with the nonlinear boundary condition by first studying the linear Schrödinger equation with a time-dependent inhomogeneous Neumann boundary condition $u_x(0,t)=h(t)$ where $h\in H^{\frac{2s-1}{4}}(0,T)$. This latter problem is studied by adapting the method of Bona-Sun-Zhang \cite{BonaSunZhang2015} to the case of inhomogeneous Neumann boundary conditions.

Qualitative properties of solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with nonlinear boundary conditions on the half-line

In this paper, we study the interaction between a nonlinear focusing Robin type boundary source, a nonlinear defocusing interior source, and a weak damping term for nonlinear Schrödinger equations posed on the infinite half line. We construct solutions with negative initial energy satisfying a certain set of conditions which blow-up in finite time in the $H^1$-sense. We obtain a sufficient condition relating the powers of nonlinearities present in the model which allows construction of blow-up solutions. In addition to the blow-up property, we also discuss the stabilization property and the critical exponent for this model.
