Coarse-grained ellipticity and De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory

We prove local boundedness and a Harnack inequality for nonnegative weak solutions of the equation $-\nabla\cdot(\mathbf{a}(x)\nabla u)=0$ under a coarse-grained ellipticity assumption on the symmetric coefficient field $\mathbf{a}$. Coarse-grained ellipticity is a scale-dependent condition, defined for fields with only $\mathbf{a},\mathbf{a}^{-1}\in L^1$, in terms of families of effective diffusion matrices on triadic cubes of all sizes, and our estimates depend quantitatively on a corresponding coarse-grained ellipticity ratio. We show that coarse-grained ellipticity can be enforced by purely negative Sobolev regularity hypotheses: if $\mathbf{a}\in L^1\cap W^{-s,p}(U)$ and $\mathbf{a}^{-1}\in L^1\cap W^{-t,q}(U)$ for exponents $p,q\in[1,\infty]$ and $s,t\in[0,1)$ satisfying $s<1-\frac{1}{p}$, $t<1-\frac{1}{q}$ and \[ \frac{s+t}{2} + \frac{d}{2}\Bigl(\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{q}\Bigr) < 1, \] then $\mathbf{a}$ is coarse-grained elliptic in $U$ and every nonnegative solution satisfies a quantitative unit-scale Harnack inequality. In particular, when $s=t=0$ we recover Trudinger's classical result under the integrability condition $\mathbf{a}\in L^p$, $\mathbf{a}^{-1}\in L^q$ with $\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{q}<\frac{2}{d}$, and we obtain the sharp scaling of the Harnack constant in terms of $\|\mathbf{a}\|_{L^p}$ and $\|\mathbf{a}^{-1}\|_{L^q}$. More importantly, our criteria apply to new classes of degenerate and singular coefficient fields for which $\mathbf{a},\mathbf{a}^{-1}\notin L^{1+δ}$ for all $δ>0$, including examples generated by singular fractal measures and Gaussian multiplicative chaos, beyond the reach of previous approaches based solely on integrability assumptions.

Large-scale analyticity and unique continuation for periodic elliptic equations

We prove that a solution of an elliptic operator with periodic coefficients behaves on large scales like an analytic function, in the sense of approximation by polynomials with periodic corrections. Equivalently, the constants in the large-scale $C^{k,1}$ estimate scale exponentially in $k$, just as for the classical estimate for harmonic functions. As a consequence, we characterize entire solutions of periodic, uniformly elliptic equations which exhibit growth like $O(\exp(δ|x|))$ for small~$δ>0$. The large-scale analyticity also implies quantitative unique continuation results, namely a three-ball theorem with an optimal error term as well as a proof of the nonexistence of $L^2$ eigenfunctions at the bottom of the spectrum.

Higher-order linearization and regularity in nonlinear homogenization

We prove large-scale $C^\infty$ regularity for solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations with random coefficients, thereby obtaining a version of the statement of Hilbert's 19th problem in the context of homogenization. The analysis proceeds by iteratively improving three statements together: (i) the regularity of the homogenized Lagrangian $\bar{L}$, (ii) the commutation of higher-order linearization and homogenization, and (iii) large-scale $C^{0,1}$-type regularity for higher-order linearization errors. We consequently obtain a quantitative estimate on the scaling of linearization errors, a Liouville-type theorem describing the polynomially-growing solutions of the system of higher-order linearized equations, and an explicit (heterogenous analogue of the) Taylor series for an arbitrary solution of the nonlinear equations---with the remainder term optimally controlled. These results give a complete generalization to the nonlinear setting of the large-scale regularity theory in homogenization for linear elliptic equations.

Bounded correctors in almost periodic homogenization

We show that certain linear elliptic equations (and systems) in divergence form with almost periodic coefficients have bounded, almost periodic correctors. This is proved under a new condition we introduce which quantifies the almost periodic assumption and includes (but is not restricted to) the class of smooth, quasiperiodic coefficient fields which satisfy a Diophantine-type condition previously considered by Kozlov. The proof is based on a quantitative ergodic theorem for almost periodic functions combined with the new regularity theory recently introduced by the first author and Shen for equations with almost periodic coefficients. This yields control on spatial averages of the gradient of the corrector, which is converted into estimates on the size of the corrector itself via a multiscale Poincaré-type inequality.

Equivalence of solutions to fractional $p$-Laplace type equations

In this paper, we study different notions of solutions of nonlocal and nonlinear equations of fractional $p$-Laplace type $${\rm P.V.} \int_{\mathbb R^n}\frac{|u(x)-u(y)|^{p-2}(u(x)-u(y))}{|x-y|^{n+sp}}\,dy = 0.$$ Solutions are defined via integration by parts with test functions, as viscosity solutions or via comparison. Our main result states that for bounded solutions, the three different notions coincide.

Fractional superharmonic functions and the Perron method for nonlinear integro-differential equations

We deal with a class of equations driven by nonlocal, possibly degenerate, integro-differential operators of differentiability order $s\in (0,1)$ and summability growth $p>1$, whose model is the fractional $p$-Laplacian with measurable coefficients. We state and prove several results for the corresponding weak supersolutions, as comparison principles, a priori bounds, lower semicontinuity, and many others. We then discuss the good definition of $(s,p)$-superharmonic functions, by also proving some related properties. We finally introduce the nonlocal counterpart of the celebrated Perron method in nonlinear Potential Theory.

Mesoscopic higher regularity and subadditivity in elliptic homogenization

We introduce a new method for obtaining quantitative results in stochastic homogenization for linear elliptic equations in divergence form. Unlike previous works on the topic, our method does not use concentration inequalities (such as Poincaré or logarithmic Sobolev inequalities in the probability space) and relies instead on a higher ($C^{k}$, $k \geq 1$) regularity theory for solutions of the heterogeneous equation, which is valid on length scales larger than a certain specified mesoscopic scale. This regularity theory, which is of independent interest, allows us to, in effect, localize the dependence of the solutions on the coefficients and thereby accelerate the rate of convergence of the expected energy of the cell problem by a bootstrap argument. The fluctuations of the energy are then tightly controlled using subadditivity. The convergence of the energy gives control of the scaling of the spatial averages of gradients and fluxes (that is, it quantifies the weak convergence of these quantities) which yields, by a new "multiscale" Poincaré inequality, quantitative estimates on the sublinearity of the corrector.

Scaling limits of energies and correctors

In stochastic homogenization of elliptic equations, the corrector plays a central role. Under a finite range of dependence assumption on the coefficient field, we show that the large-scale spatial averages of the corrector approach those of a variant of the Gaussian free field. In contrast to previous work, the argument does not rely on an underlying product structure of the probability measure. Instead, we rely on the additivity of energy quantities to show central limit theorems for these, and derive the large-scale behavior of the corrector as a consequence.

The obstacle problem for nonlinear integro-differential operators

We investigate the obstacle problem for a class of nonlinear equations driven by nonlocal, possibly degenerate, integro-differential operators, whose model is the fractional $p$-Laplacian operator with measurable coefficients. Amongst other results, we will prove both the existence and uniqueness of the solutions to the obstacle problem, and that these solutions inherit regularity properties, such as boundedness, continuity and Hölder continuity (up to the boundary), from the obstacle.

Boundary behavior of solutions to the parabolic p-Laplace equation

We establish boundary estimates for non-negative solutions to the p-parabolic equation in the degenerate range $p>2$. Our main results include new parabolic intrinsic Harnack chains in cylindrical NTA-domains together with sharp boundary decay estimates. If the underlying domain is $C^{1,1}$-regular, we establish a relatively complete theory of the boundary behavior, including boundary Harnack principles and Hölder continuity of the ratios of two solutions, as well as fine properties of associated boundary measures. There is an intrinsic waiting time phenomena present which plays a fundamental role throughout the paper. In particular, conditions on these waiting times rule out well-known examples of explicit solutions violating the boundary Harnack principle.

Pointwise Calderón-Zygmund gradient estimates for the $p$-Laplace system

Pointwise estimates for the gradient of solutions to the $p$-Laplace system with right-hand side in divergence form are established. They enable us to develop a nonlinear counterpart of the classical Calderón-Zygmund theory in terms of Calderón-Zygmund singular integrals, for the Laplacian. As a consequence, a flexible, comprehensive approach to gradient bounds for the $p$-Laplace system for a broad class of norms is derived. In particular, new gradient estimates are exhibited, and well-known results in customary function spaces are easily recovered.

A quantitative modulus of continuity for the two-phase Stefan problem

We derive the quantitative modulus of continuity $$ ω(r)=\left[ p+\ln \left( \frac{r_0}{r} \right) \right]^{-α(n,p)}, $$ which we conjecture to be optimal, for solutions of the $p$-degenerate two-phase Stefan problem. Even in the classical case $p=2$, this represents a twofold improvement with respect to the 1984 state-of-the-art result by DiBenedetto and Friedman [J. reine angew. Math., 1984], in the sense that we discard one logarithm iteration and obtain an explicit value for the exponent $α(n,p)$.

Nonlocal equations with measure data

We develop an existence, regularity and potential theory for nonlinear integrodifferential equations involving measure data. The nonlocal elliptic operators considered are possibly degenerate and cover the case of the fractional $p$-Laplacean operator with measurable coefficients. We introduce a natural function class where we solve the Dirichlet problem, and prove basic and optimal nonlinear Wolff potential estimates for solutions. These are the exact analogs of the results valid in the case of local quasilinear degenerate equations established by Boccardo & Gallouët \cite{BG1, BG2} and Kilpeläinen & Malý \cite{KM1, KM2}. As a consequence, we establish a number of results which can be considered as basic building blocks for a nonlocal, nonlinear potential theory: fine properties of solutions, Calderón-Zygmund estimates, continuity and boundedness criteria are established via Wolff potentials. %In particular, optimal Lorentz spaces continuity criteria follow. A main tool is the introduction of a global excess functional that allows to prove a nonlocal analog of the classical theory due to Campanato \cite{camp}. Our results cover the case of linear nonlocal equations with measurable coefficients, and the one of the fractional Laplacean, and are new already in such cases.

Systems of partial differential equations in porous medium

We investigate systems of degenerate parabolic equations idealizing reactive solute transport in porous media. Taking advantage of the inherent structure of the system that allows to deduce a scalar Generalized Porous Medium Equation for the sum of the solute concentrations, we show existence of a unique weak solution to the coupled system and derive regularity estimates. We also prove that the system supports solutions propagating with finite speed thus giving rise to free boundaries and interaction of compactly supported initial concentrations of different species.

Local Hölder continuity for doubly nonlinear parabolic equations

We give a proof of the Hölder continuity of weak solutions of certain degenerate doubly nonlinear parabolic equations in measure spaces. We only assume the measure to be a doubling non-trivial Borel measure which supports a Poincaré inequality. The proof discriminates between large scales, for which a Harnack inequality is used, and small scales, that require intrinsic scaling methods.
