Existence and improved regularity for a nonlinear system with collapsing ellipticity

We study a nonlinear system made up of an elliptic equation of blended singular/degenerate type and Poisson's equation with a lowly integrable source. We prove the existence of a weak solution in any space dimension and, chiefly, derive an improved $\mathcal{C}^{1,\text{log-Lip}}$-regularity estimate using tangential analysis methods. The system illustrates a sophisticated version of the proverbial thermistor problem and our results are new even in simpler modelling scenarios.

On a two-phase free boundary problem ruled by the infinity Laplacian

In this paper we consider a two-phase free boundary problem ruled by the infinity Laplacian. Our main result states that bounded viscosity solutions in $B_1$ are universally Lipschitz continuous in $B_{1/2}$, which is the optimal regularity for the problem. We make a new use of the Ishii-Lions' method, which works as a surrogate for the lack of a monotonicity formula and is bound to be applicable in related problems.

Sharp regularity for the inhomogeneous porous medium equation

We show that locally bounded solutions of the inhomogeneous porous medium equation $$u_{t} - {\rm div} \left( m |u|^{m-1} \nabla u \right) = f \in L^{q,r}, \quad m >1 ,$$ are locally Hölder continuous, with exponent $$γ=\min \left\{ \frac{α_{0}^-}{m}, \frac{[(2q - n)r -2q]}{q[(mr - (m-1)]} \right\},$$ where $α_{0}$ denotes the optimal Hölder exponent for solutions of the homogeneous case. The proof relies on an approximation lemma and geometric iteration in the appropriate intrinsic scaling.

A proof of the $C^{p^\prime}$-regularity conjecture in the plane

We establish a new oscillation estimate for solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations of elliptic, degenerate type. This new tool yields a precise control on the growth rate of solutions near their set of critical points, where ellipticity degenerates. As a consequence, we are able to prove the planar counterpart of the longstanding conjecture that solutions of the degenerate $p$-Poisson equation with a bounded source are locally of class $C^{p^\prime}=C^{1,\frac{1}{p-1}}$; this regularity is optimal.

On the interior regularity of weak solutions to the 2-D incompressible Euler equations

We consider the 2-D incompressible Euler equations in a bounded domain and show that local weak solutions are exponentially integrable, uniformly in time, under minimal integrability conditions. This is a Serrin-type interior regularity result $$u \in L_{\rm loc}^{2+\varepsilon}(Ω_T) \implies {\rm regularity}$$ for weak solutions in the energy space $L_t^\infty L_x^2$ satisfying appropriate vorticity estimates. The argument is completely local in nature as the result follows from the structural properties of the equation alone, while completely avoiding all sorts of boundary conditions and related gradient estimates. To the best of our knowledge, the approach we follow is new in the context of Euler equations and provides an alternative look at interior regularity issues. We also show how our method can be used to give a modified proof of the classical Serrin condition for the regularity of the Navier-Stokes equations in any dimension.

A quantitative modulus of continuity for the two-phase Stefan problem

We derive the quantitative modulus of continuity $$ ω(r)=\left[ p+\ln \left( \frac{r_0}{r} \right) \right]^{-α(n,p)}, $$ which we conjecture to be optimal, for solutions of the $p$-degenerate two-phase Stefan problem. Even in the classical case $p=2$, this represents a twofold improvement with respect to the 1984 state-of-the-art result by DiBenedetto and Friedman [J. reine angew. Math., 1984], in the sense that we discard one logarithm iteration and obtain an explicit value for the exponent $α(n,p)$.

On the bulk velocity of Brownian ratchets

In this paper we study the unidirectional transport effect for Brownian ratchets modeled by Fokker-Planck-type equations. In particular, we consider the adiabatic and semiadiabatic limits for tilting ratchets, generic ratchets with small diffusion, and the multi-state chemical ratchets. Having established a linear relation between the bulk transport velocity and the bi-periodic solution, and using relative entropy estimates and new functional inequalities, we obtain explicit asymptotic formulas for the transport velocity and qualitative results concerning the direction of transport. In particular, we prove the conjecture by Blanchet, Dolbeault and Kowalczyk that the bulk velocity of the stochastic Stokes' drift is non-zero for every non-constant potential.

A geometric tangential approach to sharp regularity for degenerate evolution equations

That the weak solutions of degenerate parabolic pdes modelled on the inhomogeneous $p-$Laplace equation $$ u_t - \mathrm{div} \left(|\nabla u|^{p-2} \nabla u \right) = f \in L^{q,r}, \quad p>2 $$ are $C^{0,α}$, for some $α\in (0,1)$, is known for almost 30 years. What was hitherto missing from the literature was a precise and sharp knowledge of the Hölder exponent $α$ in terms of $p, q, r$ and the space dimension $n$. We show in this paper that $$ α= \frac{(pq-n)r-pq}{q[(p-1)r-(p-2)]}, $$ using a method based on the notion of geometric tangential equations and the intrinsic scaling of the $p-$parabolic operator. The proofs are flexible enough to be of use in a number of other nonlinear evolution problems.

Local Hölder continuity for doubly nonlinear parabolic equations

We give a proof of the Hölder continuity of weak solutions of certain degenerate doubly nonlinear parabolic equations in measure spaces. We only assume the measure to be a doubling non-trivial Borel measure which supports a Poincaré inequality. The proof discriminates between large scales, for which a Harnack inequality is used, and small scales, that require intrinsic scaling methods.

p(x)-Harmonic functions with unbounded exponent in a subdomain

We study the Dirichlet problem $-÷(|\nabla u|^{p(x)-2} \nabla u) =0 $ in $Ω$, with $u=f$ on $\partial Ω$ and $p(x) = \infty$ in $D$, a subdomain of the reference domain $Ω$. The main issue is to give a proper sense to what a solution is. To this end, we consider the limit as $n \to \infty$ of the solutions $u_n$ to the corresponding problem when $p_n(x) =p(x) \wedge n$, in particular, with $p_n = n$ in $D$. Under suitable assumptions on the data, we find that such a limit exists and that it can be characterized as the unique solution of a variational minimization problem which is, in addition, $\infty$-harmonic within $D$. Moreover, we examine this limit in the viscosity sense and find the boundary value problem it satisfies in the whole of $Ω$.

On a doubly nonlinear diffusion model of chemotaxis with prevention of overcrowding

This paper addresses the existence and regularity of weak solutions for a fully parabolic model of chemotaxis, with prevention of overcrowding, that degenerates in a two-sided fashion, including an extra nonlinearity represented by a $p$-Laplacian diffusion term. To prove the existence of weak solutions, a Schauder fixed-point argument is applied to a regularized problem and the compactness method is used to pass to the limit. The local Hölder regularity of weak solutions is established using the method of intrinsic scaling. The results are a contribution to showing, qualitatively, to what extent the properties of the classical Keller-Segel chemotaxis models are preserved in a more general setting. Some numerical examples illustrate the model.
