Heavy-Flavor-Conserving Hadronic Weak Decays of Heavy Baryons

More than two decades ago, we studied heavy-flavor-conserving weak decays of heavy baryons within the framework that incorporates both heavy-quark and chiral symmetries. In view of the first observation of $Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-$ by LHCb recently, we have reexamined these decays and presented updated predictions. The predicted rates for $Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-$ in the MIT bag and diquark models are consistent with experiment. The major theoretical uncertainty stems from the evaluation of baryon matrix elements. The branching fraction of $Ξ_c\toΛ_cπ$ is predicted to be of order $10^{-4}$. It is suppressed relative to $Br(Ξ_b\toΛ_bπ)$ owing to the shorter lifetime of $Ξ_c$ relative to $Ξ_b$ and the destructive nonspectator $W$-exchange contribution. The kinematically accessible weak decays of the sextet heavy baryon $Ω_Q$ are $Ω_Q\toΞ_Qπ$. Due to the absence of the $B_6-B_{\bar 3}$ transition in the heavy quark limit and the $B_6-B_6$ transition in the model calculations, $Ω_Q\toΞ_Qπ$ vanish in the heavy quark limit.

The Parton Model and its Applications

This is a review of the program we started in 1968 to understand and generalize Bjorken scaling and Feynman's parton model in a canonical quantum field theory. It is shown that the parton model proposed for deep inelastic electron scatterings can be derived if a transverse momentum cutoff is imposed on all particles in the theory so that the impulse approximation holds. The deep inelastic electron-positron annihilation into a nucleon plus anything else is related by the crossing symmetry of quantum field theory to the deep inelastic electron-nucleon scattering. We have investigated the implication of crossing symmetry and found that the structure functions satisfy a scaling behavior analogous to the Bjorken limit for deep inelastic electron scattering. We then find that massive lepton pair production in collisions of two high energy hadrons can be treated by the parton model with an interesting scaling behavior for the differential cross sections. This turns out to be the first example of a class of hard processes involving two initial hadrons.

Leading Questions in an Extended Standard Model

We would like to discuss the language to write an extended Standard Model - using renormalizable quantum field theory as the framework; to start with certain basic units together with a certain gauge group. Specifically we use the left-handed and right-handed spinors to form the basic units together with SUc(3) x SUL(2) x U(1) x SUf(3) as the gauge group. We could write down the extended Standard Model, though the details of the Higgs mechanism remains to be worked out. The same general quest appeared about forty years ago - the so-called "How to build up a model". It is timely to address the same question again especially since we could now put together "Dirac similarity principle" and "Higgs minimum hypothesis" as two additional working rules.

Radiative leptonic decays of B mesons in QCD

We compute the form factors parametrizing radiative leptonic decays of heavy mesons B^+\toγe^+νfor photon energies much larger than Λ_{QCD}, where perturbative QCD methods for exclusive processes can be combined with the heavy quark effective theory. The form factors can be reliably obtained in this region in an expansion in powers of Λ/E_γ. The leading term in this expansion displays an additional spin symmetry manifested in the equality of form factors of vector and axial currents. The leading twist form factors can be written as the convolution of the B meson light-cone wave function with a hard scattering amplitude, which is explicitly calculated to one-loop order. The Sudakov double logarithms of the form (\frac{α_s}π\log^2\frac{2E_γ}Λ)^n are resummed to all orders. As an application we present a method for determining the CKM matrix element |V_{ub}| from a comparison of photon spectra in B and D radiative leptonic decays.

Hybrid Baryons in Large-N_c QCD

We study the properties and couplings of hybrid baryons in the large-$N_c$ expansion. These are color-neutral baryon states which contain in addition to $N_c$ quarks also one constituent gluon. Hybrid baryons with both symmetric and mixed symmetric orbital wave functions are considered. We introduce a Hartree description for these states, similar to the one used by Witten for ordinary baryons. It is shown that the Hartree equations for $N_c (N_c-1)$ quarks for symmetric (mixed symmetric) states in these states coincide with those in ordinary baryons in the large-$N_c$ limit. The energy due to the gluon field is of order $Λ_{QCD}$. Under the assumption of color confinement, our results prove the existence of hybrid baryons made up of heavy quarks in the large $N_c$ limit and provides a justification for the constituent gluon picture of these states. The couplings of the hybrid baryons to mesons of arbitrary spin are computed in the quark model. Using constraints from the large $N_c$ scaling laws for the meson-baryon scattering amplitudes, we write down consistency conditions for the meson couplings of the hybrid baryons. These consistency conditions are solved explicitly with results in agreement with those in the quark model for the respective couplings.

Model-independent electroweak penguins in B decays to two pseudoscalars

We study the effects of electroweak penguin (EWP) amplitudes in $B$ meson decays into two charmless pseudoscalars in the approximation of retaining only the dominant EWP operators $Q_9$ and $Q_{10}$. Using flavor SU(3) symmetry, we derive a set of model-independent relations between EWP contributions and tree-level decay amplitudes one of which was noted recently by Neubert and Rosner. Two new applications of these relations are demonstrated in which uncertainties due to EWP corrections are eliminated in order to determine a weak phase. Whereas the weak angle $α$ can be obtained from $B\toππ$ free of hadronic uncertainties, a determination of $γ$ from $B^{0,\pm}\to Kπ^{\pm}$ requires the knowledge of a ratio of certain tree-level hadronic matrix elements. The smallness of this ratio implies a useful constraint on $γ$ if rescattering can be neglected.

$1/N_c$ Expansion for Excited Baryons

We derive consistency conditions which constrain the possible form of the strong couplings of the excited baryons to the pions. The consistency conditions follow from requiring the pion-excited baryon scattering amplitudes to satisfy the large-N_c Witten counting rules and are analogous to consistency conditions used by Dashen, Jenkins and Manohar and others for s-wave baryons. The consistency conditions are explicitly solved, giving the most general allowed form of the strong vertices for excited baryons in the large-N_c limit. We show that the solutions to the large-N_c consistency conditions coincide with the predictions of the nonrelativistic quark model for these states, extending the results previously obtained for the s-wave baryons. The 1/N_c corrections to these predictions are studied in the quark model with arbitrary number of colors N_c.

Predictions for s-Wave and p-Wave Heavy Baryons from Sum Rules and Constituent Quark Model (I): Strong Interactions

We study the strong interactions of the L=1 orbitally excited baryons with one heavy quark in the framework of the Heavy Hadron Chiral Perturbation Theory. To leading order in the heavy mass expansion, the interaction Lagrangian describing the couplings of these states among themselves and with the ground state heavy baryons contains 46 unknown couplings. We derive sum rules analogous to the Adler-Weisberger sum rule which constrain these couplings and relate them to the couplings of the s-wave heavy baryons. Using a spin 3/2 baryon as a target, we find a sum rule expressing the deviation from the quark model prediction for pion couplings to s-wave states in terms of couplings of the p-wave states. In the constituent quark model these couplings are related and can be expressed in terms of only two reduced matrix elements. Using recent CLEO data on $Σ_c^{*}$ and $Λ_{c1}^+$ strong decays, we determine some of the unknown couplings in the chiral Lagrangian and the two quark model reduced matrix elements. Specific predictions are made for the decay properties of all L=1 charmed baryons.

Corrections to Chiral Dynamics of Heavy Hadrons: SU(3) Symmetry Breaking, (with some minor corrections)

In previous publications we have analyzed the strong and electromagnetic decays of heavy mesons and heavy baryons in a formalism which incorporates heavy-quark and chiral symmetries. There are two possible symmetry-breaking effects on the chiral dynamics of heavy hadrons: the finite-mass effects from light quarks and the $1/ m_Q$ corrections from heavy quarks. In the present paper, chiral-symmetry-breaking effects are studied and applications to various strong and radiative decays of heavy hadrons are illustrated. SU(3) violations induced by chiral loops in the radiative decays of charmed mesons and charmed baryons are compared with those predicted by the constituent quark model. In particular, available data for $D^*$ decays favor values of the parameters in chiral perturbation theory which give predictions for $D^*$ decays close to the quark model results except for the $D^{*+}_s$. Implications are discussed.
