Boundary Chiral Algebras and Holomorphic Twists

We study the holomorphic twist of 3d ${\cal N}=2$ gauge theories in the presence of boundaries, and the algebraic structure of bulk and boundary local operators. In the holomorphic twist, both bulk and boundary local operators form chiral algebras (\emph{a.k.a.} vertex operator algebras). The bulk algebra is commutative, endowed with a shifted Poisson bracket and a "higher" stress tensor; while the boundary algebra is a module for the bulk, may not be commutative, and may or may not have a stress tensor. We explicitly construct bulk and boundary algebras for free theories and Landau-Ginzburg models. We construct boundary algebras for gauge theories with matter and/or Chern-Simons couplings, leaving a full description of bulk algebras to future work. We briefly discuss the presence of higher A-infinity like structures.

Mirror symmetry and line operators

We study half-BPS line operators in 3d N=4 gauge theories, focusing in particular on the algebras of local operators at their junctions. It is known that there are two basic types of such line operators, distinguished by the SUSY subalgebras that they preserve; the two types can roughly be called "Wilson lines" and "vortex lines", and are exchanged under 3d mirror symmetry. We describe a large class of vortex lines that can be characterized by basic algebraic data, and propose a mathematical scheme to compute the algebras of local operators at their junctions --- including monopole operators --- in terms of this data. The computation generalizes mathematical and physical definitions/analyses of the bulk Coulomb-branch chiral ring. We fully classify the junctions of half-BPS Wilson lines and of half-BPS vortex lines in abelian gauge theories with sufficient matter. We also test our computational scheme in a non-abelian quiver gauge theory, using a 3d-mirror-map of line operators from work of Assel and Gomis.

The ADO Invariants are a q-Holonomic Family

We investigate the $q$-holonomic properties of a class of link invariants based on quantum group representations with vanishing quantum dimensions, motivated by the search for the invariants' realization in physics. Some of the best known invariants of this type, constructed from `typical' representations of the unrolled quantum group $\mathcal U^H_{ζ_{2r}}(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ at a $2r$-th root of unity, were introduced by Akutsu-Deguchi-Ohtsuki (ADO). We prove that the ADO invariants for $r\geq 2$ are a $q$-holonomic family, implying in particular that they satisfy recursion relations that are independent of $r$. In the case of a knot, we prove that the $q$-holonomic recursion ideal of the ADO invariants is contained in the recursion ideal of the colored Jones polynomials, the subject of the celebrated AJ Conjecture. (Combined with a recent result of S. Willetts, this establishes an isomorphism of the ADO and Jones recursion ideals. Our results also confirm a recent physically-motivated conjecture of Gukov-Hsin-Nakajima-Park-Pei-Sopenko.)

Secondary products in supersymmetric field theory

The product of local operators in a topological quantum field theory in dimension greater than one is commutative, as is more generally the product of extended operators of codimension greater than one. In theories of cohomological type these commutative products are accompanied by secondary operations, which capture linking or braiding of operators, and behave as (graded) Poisson brackets with respect to the primary product. We describe the mathematical structures involved and illustrate this general phenomenon in a range of physical examples arising from supersymmetric field theories in spacetime dimension two, three, and four. In the Rozansky-Witten twist of three-dimensional N=4 theories, this gives an intrinsic realization of the holomorphic symplectic structure of the moduli space of vacua. We further give a simple mathematical derivation of the assertion that introducing an Omega-background precisely deformation quantizes this structure. We then study the secondary product structure of extended operators, which subsumes that of local operators but is often much richer. We calculate interesting cases of secondary brackets of line operators in Rozansky-Witten theories and in four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theories, measuring the noncommutativity of the spherical category in the geometric Langlands program.

Boundaries, Mirror Symmetry, and Symplectic Duality in 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ Gauge Theory

We introduce several families of $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ UV boundary conditions in 3d $\mathcal N=4$ gauge theories and study their IR images in sigma-models to the Higgs and Coulomb branches. In the presence of Omega deformations, a UV boundary condition defines a pair of modules for quantized algebras of chiral Higgs- and Coulomb-branch operators, respectively, whose structure we derive. In the case of abelian theories, we use the formalism of hyperplane arrangements to make our constructions very explicit, and construct a half-BPS interface that implements the action of 3d mirror symmetry on gauge theories and boundary conditions. Finally, by studying two-dimensional compactifications of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauge theories and their boundary conditions, we propose a physical origin for symplectic duality - an equivalence of categories of modules associated to families of Higgs and Coulomb branches that has recently appeared in the mathematics literature, and generalizes classic results on Koszul duality in geometric representation theory. We make several predictions about the structure of symplectic duality, and identify Koszul duality as a special case of wall crossing.

K-Decompositions and 3d Gauge Theories

This paper combines several new constructions in mathematics and physics. Mathematically, we study framed flat PGL(K,C)-connections on a large class of 3-manifolds M with boundary. We define a space L_K(M) of framed flat connections on the boundary of M that extend to M. Our goal is to understand an open part of L_K(M) as a Lagrangian in the symplectic space of framed flat connections on the boundary, and as a K_2-Lagrangian, meaning that the K_2-avatar of the symplectic form restricts to zero. We construct an open part of L_K(M) from data assigned to a hypersimplicial K-decomposition of an ideal triangulation of M, generalizing Thurston's gluing equations in 3d hyperbolic geometry, and combining them with the cluster coordinates for framed flat PGL(K)-connections on surfaces. Using a canonical map from the complex of configurations of decorated flags to the Bloch complex, we prove that any generic component of L_K(M) is K_2-isotropic if the boundary satisfies some topological constraints (Theorem 4.2). In some cases this implies that L_K(M) is K_2-Lagrangian. For general M, we extend a classic result of Neumann-Zagier on symplectic properties of PGL(2) gluing equations to reduce the K_2-Lagrangian property to a combinatorial claim. Physically, we use the symplectic properties of K-decompositions to construct 3d N=2 superconformal field theories T_K[M] corresponding (conjecturally) to the compactification of K M5-branes on M. This extends known constructions for K=2. Just as for K=2, the theories T_K[M] are described as IR fixed points of abelian Chern-Simons-matter theories. Changes of triangulation (2-3 moves) lead to abelian mirror symmetries that are all generated by the elementary duality between N_f=1 SQED and the XYZ model. In the large K limit, we find evidence that the degrees of freedom of T_K[M] grow cubically in K.

Quantum modularity and complex Chern-Simons theory

The Quantum Modularity Conjecture of Zagier predicts the existence of a formal power series with arithmetically interesting coefficients that appears in the asymptotics of the Kashaev invariant at each root of unity. Our goal is to construct a power series from a Neumann-Zagier datum (i.e., an ideal triangulation of the knot complement and a geometric solution to the gluing equations) and a complex root of unity $ζ$. We prove that the coefficients of our series lie in the trace field of the knot, adjoined a complex root of unity. We conjecture that our series are those that appear in the Quantum Modularity Conjecture and confirm that they match the numerical asymptotics of the Kashaev invariant (at various roots of unity) computed by Zagier and the first author. Our construction is motivated by the analysis of singular limits in Chern-Simons theory with gauge group $SL(2,C)$ at fixed level $k$, where $ζ^k=1$.

The Coulomb Branch of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ Theories

We propose a construction of the quantum-corrected Coulomb branch of a general 3d gauge theory with $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry, in terms of local coordinates associated with an abelianized theory. In a fixed complex structure, the holomorphic functions on the Coulomb branch are given by expectation values of chiral monopole operators. We construct the chiral ring of such operators, using equivariant integration over BPS moduli spaces. We also quantize the chiral ring, which corresponds to placing the 3d theory in a 2d Omega background. Then, by unifying all complex structures in a twistor space, we encode the full hyperkähler metric on the Coulomb branch. We verify our proposals in a multitude of examples, including SQCD and linear quiver gauge theories, whose Coulomb branches have alternative descriptions as solutions to the Bogomolnyi and/or Nahm equations.

3d Superconformal Theories from Three-Manifolds

This is the 10th article in the collection of reviews "Exact results on N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories", ed. J.Teschner. It reviews correspondences between three-dimensional gauge theories and complex Chern-Simons theory on suitable three-manifolds. Such correspondences are in many cases deeply related to the 4d/2d correspondence discussed in this collection. The partition functions of the three-dimensional gauge theories are calculable by means of localisation (as discussed in article no. 9 by K. Hosomichi), and the results are related to the quantum theory obtained by quantisation of Hitchin's moduli spaces.

A Spectral Perspective on Neumann-Zagier

We provide a new topological interpretation of the symplectic properties of gluing equations for triangulations of hyperbolic 3-manifolds, first discovered by Neumann and Zagier. We also extend the symplectic properties to more general gluings of PGL(2,C) flat connections on the boundaries of 3-manifolds with topological ideal triangulations, proving that gluing is a K_2 symplectic reduction of PGL(2,C) moduli spaces. Recently, such symplectic properties have been central in constructing quantum PGL(2,C) invariants of 3-manifolds. Our methods adapt the spectral network construction of Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke to relate framed flat PGL(2,C) connections on the boundary C of a 3-manifold to flat GL(1,C) connections on a double branched cover S -> C of the boundary. Then moduli spaces of both PGL(2,C) connections on C and GL(1,C) connections on S gain coordinates labelled by the first homology of S, and inherit symplectic properties from the intersection form on homology.

Complex Chern-Simons theory at level k via the 3d-3d correspondence

We use the 3d-3d correspondence together with the DGG construction of theories $T_n[M]$ labelled by 3-manifolds M to define a non-perturbative state-integral model for SL(n,C) Chern-Simons theory at any level k, based on ideal triangulations. The resulting partition functions generalize a widely studied k=1 state-integral as well as the 3d index, which is k=0. The Chern-Simons partition functions correspond to partition functions of $T_n[M]$ on squashed lens spaces L(k,1). At any k, they admit a holomorphic-antiholomorphic factorization, corresponding to the decomposition of L(k,1) into two solid tori, and the associated holomorphic block decomposition of the partition functions of T_n[M]. A generalization to L(k,p) is also presented. Convergence of the state integrals, for any k, requires triangulations to admit a positive angle structure; we propose that this is also necessary for the DGG gauge theory T_n[M] to flow to a desired IR SCFT.

RG Domain Walls and Hybrid Triangulations

This paper studies the interplay between the N=2 gauge theories in three and four dimensions that have a geometric description in terms of twisted compactification of the six-dimensional (2,0) SCFT. Our main goal is to construct the three-dimensional domain walls associated to any three-dimensional cobordism. We find that we can build a variety of 3d theories that represent the local degrees of freedom at a given domain wall in various 4d duality frames, including both UV S-dual frames and IR Seiberg-Witten electric-magnetic dual frames. We pay special attention to Janus domain walls, defined by four-dimensional Lagrangians with position-dependent couplings. If the couplings on either side of the wall are weak in different UV duality frames, Janus domain walls reduce to S-duality walls, i.e. domain walls that encode the properties of UV dualities. If the couplings on one side are weak in the IR and on the other weak in the UV, Janus domain walls reduce to RG walls, i.e. domain walls that encode the properties of RG flows. We derive the 3d geometries associated to both types of domain wall, and test their properties in simple examples, both through basic field-theoretic considerations and via comparison with quantum Teichmuller theory. Our main mathematical tool is a parametrization and quantization of framed flat SL(K) connections on these geometries based on ideal triangulations.

An E7 Surprise

We explore some curious implications of Seiberg duality for an SU(2) four-dimensional gauge theory with eight chiral doublets. We argue that two copies of the theory can be deformed by an exactly marginal quartic superpotential so that they acquire an enhanced E7 flavor symmetry. We argue that a single copy of the theory can be used to define an E7-invariant superconformal boundary condition for a theory of 28 five-dimensional free hypermultiplets. Finally, we derive similar statements for three-dimensional gauge theories such as an SU(2) gauge theory with six chiral doublets or Nf=4 SQED.

3-Manifolds and 3d Indices

We identify a large class R of three-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories. This class includes the effective theories T_M of M5-branes wrapped on 3-manifolds M, discussed in previous work by the authors, and more generally comprises theories that admit a UV description as abelian Chern-Simons-matter theories with (possibly non-perturbative) superpotential. Mathematically, class R might be viewed as an extreme quantum generalization of the Bloch group; in particular, the equivalence relation among theories in class R is a quantum-field-theoretic "2-3 move." We proceed to study the supersymmetric index of theories in class R, uncovering its physical and mathematical properties, including relations to algebras of line operators and to 4d indices. For 3-manifold theories T_M, the index is a new topological invariant, which turns out to be equivalent to non-holomorphic SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory on M with a previously unexplored "integration cycle."

Chern-Simons Theory and S-duality

We study S-dualities in analytically continued SL(2) Chern-Simons theory on a 3-manifold M. By realizing Chern-Simons theory via a compactification of a 6d five-brane theory on M, various objects and symmetries in Chern-Simons theory become related to objects and operations in dual 2d, 3d, and 4d theories. For example, the space of flat SL(2,C) connections on M is identified with the space of supersymmetric vacua in a dual 3d gauge theory. The hidden symmetry "hbar -> - (4 pi^2)/hbar" of SL(2) Chern-Simons theory can be identified as the S-duality transformation of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory (obtained by compactifying the five-brane theory on a torus); whereas the mapping class group action in Chern-Simons theory on a three-manifold M with boundary C is realized as S-duality in 4d N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory associated with the Riemann surface C. We illustrate these symmetries by considering simple examples of 3-manifolds that include knot complements and punctured torus bundles, on the one hand, and mapping cylinders associated with mapping class group transformations, on the other. A generalization of mapping class group actions further allows us to study the transformations between several distinguished coordinate systems on the phase space of Chern-Simons theory, the SL(2) Hitchin moduli space.

Gauge Theories Labelled by Three-Manifolds

We propose a dictionary between geometry of triangulated 3-manifolds and physics of three-dimensional N=2 gauge theories. Under this duality, standard operations on triangulated 3-manifolds and various invariants thereof (classical as well as quantum) find a natural interpretation in field theory. For example, independence of the SL(2) Chern-Simons partition function on the choice of triangulation translates to a statement that S^3_b partition functions of two mirror 3d N=2 gauge theories are equal. Three-dimensional N=2 field theories associated to 3-manifolds can be thought of as theories that describe boundary conditions and duality walls in four-dimensional N=2 SCFTs, thus making the whole construction functorial with respect to cobordisms and gluing.

Quantum Riemann Surfaces in Chern-Simons Theory

We construct from first principles the operator 'A-hat' that annihilates the partition functions (or wavefunctions) of three-dimensional Chern-Simons theory with gauge groups SU(2), SL(2,R), or SL(2,C) on a knot complement M. The operator 'A-hat' is a quantization of the knot complement's classical A-polynomial A(l,m). The construction proceeds by decomposing three-manifolds into ideal tetrahedra, and invoking a new, more global understanding of gluing in TQFT to put them back together. We advocate in particular that, properly interpreted, "gluing = symplectic reduction." We also arrive at a new finite-dimensional state integral model for computing the analytically continued "holomorphic blocks" that compose any physical Chern-Simons partition function.

Quantum Field Theory and the Volume Conjecture

The volume conjecture states that for a hyperbolic knot K in the three-sphere S^3 the asymptotic growth of the colored Jones polynomial of K is governed by the hyperbolic volume of the knot complement S^3\K. The conjecture relates two topological invariants, one combinatorial and one geometric, in a very nonobvious, nontrivial manner. The goal of the present lectures is to review the original statement of the volume conjecture and its recent extensions and generalizations, and to show how, in the most general context, the conjecture can be understood in terms of topological quantum field theory. In particular, we consider: a) generalization of the volume conjecture to families of incomplete hyperbolic metrics; b) generalization that involves not only the leading (volume) term, but the entire asymptotic expansion in 1/N; c) generalization to quantum group invariants for groups of higher rank; and d) generalization to arbitrary links in arbitrary three-manifolds.

Vortex Counting and Lagrangian 3-manifolds

To every 3-manifold M one can associate a two-dimensional N=(2,2) supersymmetric field theory by compactifying five-dimensional N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory on M. This system naturally appears in the study of half-BPS surface operators in four-dimensional N=2 gauge theories on one hand, and in the geometric approach to knot homologies, on the other. We study the relation between vortex counting in such two-dimensional N=(2,2) supersymmetric field theories and the refined BPS invariants of the dual geometries. In certain cases, this counting can be also mapped to the computation of degenerate conformal blocks in two-dimensional CFT's. Degenerate limits of vertex operators in CFT receive a simple interpretation via geometric transitions in BPS counting.
