Coupled sawtooth chain exchange network in olivine Mn$_2$GeO$_4$

Sawtooth chain magnets have been a subject of historical interest in the field of frustrated magnetism, with classical olivine family $M_2TX_4$, ($M$ - 3d, $T$ - 4p, $X$ - chalcogen elements) typically realizing simple $\mathbf{k} = (000)$ states. The magnetism of the Mn$_2$GeO$_4$ olivine is surprisingly complex, proceeding from commensurate states to a multiferroic commensurate + incommensurate phase. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering results from a Mn$_2$GeO$_4$ single crystal and develop an effective Hamiltonian including long-distance bilinear and dipolar interactions. The magnetic interactions are predominantly antiferromagnetic and span a three-dimensional exchange network consisting of coupled sawtooth chains. Based on the determined strength of the couplings, the dominant sawtooth chains appear at third- and fourth- rather than next-nearest-neighbor. However the next-nearest-neighbor interaction is, along with a modest Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, important for modeling the observed incommensurability. We use the best-fit Hamiltonian as the basis for Langevin dynamics simulations and Luttinger-Tisza calculations of the high-temperature commensurate transition.

Ferroelectric transition of a chiral molecular crystal BINOL2DMSO

We report dielectric, thermodynamical, acoustic, and optical properties of a chiral molecular crystal, 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol 2-dimethylsulfoxide (BINOL2DMSO). We find two successive phase transitions at Tc1=190 K and Tc2=125 K. The first transition at Tc1 is characterized by an order-disorder transition of the guest molecules DMSO along with ferroelectricity. At the second transition of Tc2, the crystal structure deforms from tetragonal to monoclinic, leading to domain formation. Low-temperature x-ray diffraction suggests that the space group changes from P4_12_12 (P4_32_12) to P4_1 (P4_3) at Tc1, and down to P112_1 at Tc2.

Spin dynamics in the square-lattice cupola system Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$

We report high-resolution single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the spin-1/2 antiferromagnet Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$. This material is formed from layers of four-site \cupola" structures, oriented alternately upwards and downwards, which constitute a rather special realization of two-dimensional (2D) square-lattice magnetism. The strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction within each cupola, or plaquette, unit has a geometry largely unexplored among the numerous studies of magnetic properties in 2D Heisenberg models with spin and spatial anisotropies. We have measured the magnetic excitations at zero field and in fields up to 5 T, finding a complex mode structure with multiple characteristic features that allow us to extract all the relevant magnetic interactions by modelling within the linear spin-wave approximation. We demonstrate that Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ is a checkerboard system with almost equal intra- and inter-plaquette couplings, in which the intra-plaquette DM interaction is instrumental both in enforcing robust magnetic order and in opening a large gap at the Brillouin-zone center. We place our observations in the perspective of generalized phase diagrams for spin-1/2 square-lattice models and materials, where exploring anisotropies and frustration as routes to quantum disorder remains a frontier research problem.

Optical excitation of electromagnons in hexaferrite

Understanding ultrafast magnetization dynamics on the microscopic level is of strong current interest due to the potential for applications in information storage. In recent years, the spin-lattice coupling has been recognized to be essential for ultrafast magnetization dynamics. Magnetoelectric multiferroics of type II possess intrinsic correlations among magnetic sublattices and electric polarization (P) through spin-lattice coupling, enabling fundamentally coupled dynamics between spins and lattice. Here we report on ultrafast magnetization dynamics in a room-temperature multiferroic hexaferrite possessing ferrimagnetic and antiferromagnetic sublattices, revealed by time-resolved resonant x-ray diffraction. A femtosecond above-bandgap excitation triggers a coherent magnon in which the two magnetic sublattices entangle and give rise to a transient modulation of P. A novel microscopic mechanism for triggering the coherent magnon in this ferrimagnetic insulator based on the spin-lattice coupling is proposed. Our finding opens up a novel but general pathway for ultrafast control of magnetism.

Domain switching and exchange bias control by electric field in multiferroic conical magnet Mn$_2$GeO$_4$

The electric field effect on magnetism was examined in the multiferroic conical magnet Mn$_2$GeO$_4$, which shows a strong coupling between ferromagnetic and ferroelectric order parameters. The systematic evaluation of the electric polarization in the multiferroic phase below 5.5 K under various field cooling conditions reveals that small magnetic fields of 0.1 T significantly reduce the required electric fields needed to reach saturation. By applying electric fields during magnetic field dependent hysteresis measurements of magnetization M and polarization P an electrically controllable exchange bias was observed, a phenomenon exceedingly rare in single phase multiferroics. Furthermore, non-reversible electric switching of P and M domains was achieved under specific magnetic field conditions.

Emergent spin-$1$ Haldane gap and ferroelectricity in a frustrated spin-$1/2$ ladder

We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-$1/2$ chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a novel class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirality order.

Magnetic structure in square cupola compound Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$: a $^{31}$P NMR Study

The magnetic structure of the antiferromagnetic square cupola compound Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ with the tetragonal structure is studied with 31P nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. The magnetic hyperfine shift K shows a clear splitting at the Néel temperature T$_N$ = 9.5 K, where the resonance splits into two lines when an external magnetic field is oriented along the c axis and into four lines when the field is along the a axis. In the paramagnetic region K(T) follows temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$. From K vs $χ$ plot we determined nearly isotropic hyperfine field values Ha_hf = 765 mT/$μ_B$ and Hc_hf = 740 mT/$μ_B$ for the magnetic field oriented along a and c, respectively. From the rotation of the single crystal in the external magnetic field we determined eight different orientations of K-tensor in the paramagnetic region. In the antiferromagnetic state at T = 6 K we found that the local field at phosphorus is mainly due to dipolar field of coppers. Here the rotation of the single crystal shows eight different orientations of the local field Bint = 35.6 mT. The orientations correspond to the calculation of dipolar fields at phosphorus assuming magnetic quadrupolar configuration of magnetic moments $\varGamma_3(1)$ described previously [Nat. Commun. 7, 13039 (2016); Phys. Rev. B 96, 214436 (2017)].

Electromagnon dispersion probed by inelastic x-ray scattering

Inelastic x-ray scattering with meV energy resolution (IXS) is an ideal tool to measure collective excitations in solids and liquids. In non-resonant scattering condition, the cross section is strongly dominated by lattice vibrations (phonons). However, it is possible to probe additional degrees of freedom such as magnetic fluctuations that are strongly coupled to the phonons. The IXS spectrum of the coupled system will contain not only the phonon dispersion (majority component) but also the so far undetected magnetic correlation function (minority component). Here we report the discovery of strong magnon-phonon coupling in LiCrO$_2$ that enables the measurement of magnetic correlations throughout the Brillouin-zone via IXS. We found electromagnon excitations and electric dipole active two-magnon excitations in the magnetically ordered phase and paraelectromagnons in the paramagnetic phase of LiCrO$_2$. We predict that the numerous group of (frustrated) magnets with dominant direct exchange and non-collinear magnetism shows similarly strong coupling and surprisingly large and measurable IXS cross section for magnons and multi-magnon processes.

Quadrupole moments in chiral material DyFe3(BO3)4 observed by resonant x-ray diffraction

By means of circularly polarized x-ray beam at Dy L3 and Fe K absorption edges, the chiral structure of the electric quadrupole was investigated for a single crystal of DyFe3(BO3)4 in which both Dy and Fe ions are arranged in spiral manners. The integrated intensity of the resonant x- ray diffraction of space-group forbidden reflections 004 and 005 is interpreted within the electric dipole transitions from Dy 2p3 to 5d and Fe 1s to 4p, respectively. We have confirmed that the 2 handedness of the crystal observed at Dy L3 and Fe K edges is consistent with that observed at Dy M5 edge in the previous study. By analyzing the azimuth scans of the diffracted intensity, the electronic quadrupole moments of Dy 5d and Fe 4p are derived. The temperature profiles of the integrated intensity of 004 at the Dy L3 and the Fe K edges are similar to those of Dy-O and Fe-O bond lengths, while that at the Dy M5 edge does not. The results indicate that the helix chiral orientations of quadrupole moments due to Dy 5d and Fe 4p electrons are more strongly affected by the crystal fields than Dy 4f.

Charge ordering in the intermediate valence magnet YbPd

An x-ray diffraction study reveals the charge ordering structure in an intermediate valence magnet YbPd with a CsCl-structure. The valence of the Yb ions forms an incommensurate structure, characterized by the wavevector (+-0.07 +-0.07 1/2) below 130 K. At 105 K, the incommensurate structure turns into a commensurate structure, characterized by the wavevector (0 0 1/2). Based on the resonant x-ray diffraction spectra of the superlattice reflections, the valences of the Yb ions below 105 K are found to be 3+ and 2.6+. The origin of the long wavelength modulation is discussed with the aid of an Ising model having the second nearest neighbor interaction.
