Icosahedral quasicrystal, 1/1 and 2/1 approximants in Zn-based ternary alloys containing Au and Yb/Tb

In a narrow composition range centered at Zn74.5Au10.5Yb15.0, Tsai-type icosahedral quasicrystal is formed in alloys quenched from 880 C. This quasicrystal belongs to the primitive type with the 6-dimensional lattice parameter a6D=7.378 A. The quasicrystal was not formed in the slowly cooled specimen, and was considered a metastable phase. The stable phase is a 2/1 approximant of the lattice parameter a2/1=23.271 A. This approximant forms exclusively in Zn76.0Au9.0Yb15.0 alloy annealed at 530 C. In addition, Zn70.5Au15.5Tb14.0 alloy annealed at 505 C forms a Tsai-type 1/1 approximant (a1/1=14.343 A). These new Zn-based phases observed in this study correspond to the quasicrystal-related phases in binary Cd-lanthanoid systems, and show the possibility of isostructural substitution of Cd by Zn/Au.

Pressure-Driven Quantum Criticality and T/H Scaling in the Icosahedral Au-Al-Yb Approximant

We report on ac magnetic susceptibility measurements under pressure of the Au-Al-Yb alloy, a crystalline approximant to the icosahedral quasicrystal that shows unconventional quantum criticality. In describing the susceptibility as $χ(T)^{-1} - χ(0)^{-1} \propto T^γ$, we find that $χ(0)^{-1}$ decreases with increasing pressure and vanishes to zero at the critical pressure $P_{\rm c} \simeq 2$ GPa, with $γ~ (\simeq 0.5)$ unchanged. We suggest that this quantum criticality emerges owing to critical valence fluctuations. Above $P_{\rm c}$, the approximant undergoes a magnetic transition at $T \simeq 100$ mK. These results are contrasted with the fact that, in the quasicrystal, the quantum criticality is robust against the application of pressure. The applicability of the so-called $T/H$ scaling to the approximant is also discussed.

Dodecagonal quasicrystal in Mn-based quaternary alloys containing Cr, Ni and Si

A dodecagonal quasicrystal showing 12-fold symmetry forms in Mn-rich quaternary alloys containing 5.5 or 7.5 at.% Cr, 5.0 at.% Ni and 17.5 at.% Si. After annealing at 700 C for 130 h, the quasicrystal precipitated in a matrix of \b{eta}-Mn type crystalline phase. The shape of the quasicrystal is needle-like having a length of several tens of micrometers. Electron diffraction as well as powder X-ray diffraction experiments have revealed the following characteristics of the quasicrystal; diffraction symmetry 12/mmm, presence of systematic extinction for h1h2h2h1h5 type reflections with odd h5 index, and then five-dimensional space group P126/mmc. Indexing of the reflections indicated that the dimension of the common edge in the equilateral triangle-square tiling is 4.560 Å, and the periodicity is 4.626 Å along the 12-fold axis. This is the first example of the dodecagonal quasicrystal synthesized by ordinary metallurgical method in 3-d transition-metal alloys.

Phason space analysis and structure modeling of 100 A-scale dodecagonal quasicrystal in Mn-based alloy

The dodecagonal quasicrystal classified into the five-dimensional space group P126/mmc, recently discovered in a Mn-Cr-Ni-Si alloy, has been analyzed using atomic-resolution spherical aberration-corrected electron microscopy, i.e. high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and conventional transmission electron microscopy. By observing along the 12-fold axis, non-periodic tiling consisting of an equilateral triangle and a square has been revealed, of which common edge length is a = 4.560 A. These tiles tend to form a network of dodecagons of which size is (2+Sqrt(3))a ~ 17 A in diameter. The tiling was interpreted as an aggregate of 100 A-scale oriented domains of high- and low-quality quasicrystals with small crystallites appearing at their boundaries. The quasicrystal domains exhibited a densely-filled circular acceptance region in the phason space. This is the first observation of the acceptance region in an actual dodecagonal quasicrystal. Atomic structure model consistent with the electron microscopy images is a standard Frank-Kasper decoration of the triangle and square tiles, that can be inferred from the crystal structures of Zr4Al3 and Cr3Si. Four kinds of layers located at z = 0, +-1/4 and 1/2 are stacked periodically along the 12-fold axis, and the atoms at z = 0 and 1/2 form hexagonal anti-prisms consistently with the 126-screw axis. The validity of this structure model was examined by means of powder X-ray diffraction.

Superconductivity of Au-Ge-Yb Approximants with Tsai-Type Clusters

We report the emergence of bulk superconductivity in Au64.0Ge22.0Yb14.0 and Au63.5Ge20.5Yb16.0 below 0.68 and 0.36 K, respectively. This is the first observation of superconductivity in Tsai-type crystalline approximants of quasicrystals. The Tsai-type cluster center is occupied by Au and Ge ions in the former approximant, and by an Yb ion in the latter. For magnetism, the latter system shows a larger magnetization than the former. To explain this observation, we propose a model that the cluster-center Yb ion is magnetic. The relationship between the magnetism and the superconductivity is also discussed.

Valence Change Driven by Constituent Element Substitution in the Mixed-Valence Quasicrystal and Approximant Au-Al-Yb

Quantum criticality has been considered to be specific to crystalline materials such as heavy fermions. Very recently, however, the Tsai-type quasicrystal Au51Al34Yb15 has been reported to show unusual quantum critical behavior. To obtain a deeper understanding of this new material, we have searched for other Tsai-type cluster materials. Here, we report that the metal alloys Au44Ga41Yb15 and Ag47Ga38Yb15 are members of the 1/1 approximant to the Tsai-type quasicrystal and that both possess no localized magnetic moment. We suggest that the Au-Al-Yb system is located near the border of the divalent and trivalent states of the Yb ion; we also discuss a possible origin of the disappearance of magnetism, associated with the valence change, by the substitution of the constituent elements.

Quantum critical state in a magnetic quasicrystal

Quasicrystals are metallic alloys that possess long-range, aperiodic structures with diffraction symmetries forbidden to conventional crystals. Since the discovery of quasicrystals by Schechtman et al. at 1984 (ref. 1), there has been considerable progress in resolving their geometric structure. For example, it is well known that the golden ratio of mathematics and art occurs over and over again in their crystal structure. However, the characteristic properties of the electronic states - whether they are extended as in periodic crystals or localized as in amorphous materials - are still unresolved. Here we report the first observation of quantum (T = 0) critical phenomena of the Au-Al-Yb quasicrystal - the magnetic susceptibility and the electronic specific heat coefficient arising from strongly correlated 4f electrons of the Yb atoms diverge as T -> 0. Furthermore, we observe that this quantum critical phenomenon is robust against hydrostatic pressure. By contrast, there is no such divergence in a crystalline approximant, a phase whose composition is close to that of the quasicrystal and whose unit cell has atomic decorations (that is, icosahedral clusters of atoms) that look like the quasicrystal. These results clearly indicate that the quantum criticality is associated with the unique electronic state of the quasicrystal, that is, a spatially confined critical state. Finally we discuss the possibility that there is a general law underlying the conventional crystals and the quasicrystals.

Icosahedral quasicrystal and 1/1 cubic approximant in Au-Al-Yb alloys

A P-type icosahedral quasicrystal is formed in Au-Al-Yb alloy of which 6-dimensional lattice parameter a6D = 7.448 Å. The composition of the quasicrystal was analyzed to be Au51Al34Yb15. This quasicrystal is formed in as-cast alloys, and is regarded as metastable because of decomposition into other crystalline phases by annealing at 700 \degree C. Among Tsai-type quasicrystals, this quasicrystal is situated just between Zn-Sc group with smaller a6D and larger Cd-Yb group. Intermediate valence of Yb recently observed in this quasicrystal may be due to this unique situation, namely smaller major component Au-Al than in Cd-Yb. The predominant phase in the annealed specimen is a 1/1 cubic approximant with lattice parameter a = 14.500 Å belonging to the space group Im-3 . This phase is stable at the composition Au51Al35Yb14 at 700 \degree C. Rietveld structural analysis indicated that the crystal structure is understood as periodic arrangement of Tsai-type clusters each including four Au-Al atoms at their centers. Chemical ordering of Au and Al is characteristics of this approximant.
