Double-Soft Limits of Gluons and Gravitons

The double-soft limit of gluon and graviton amplitudes is studied in four dimensions at tree level. In general this limit is ambiguous and we introduce two natural ways of taking it: A consecutive double-soft limit where one particle is taken soft before the other and a simultaneous limit where both particles are taken soft uniformly. All limits yield universal factorisation formulae which we establish by BCFW recursion relations down to the subleading order in the soft momentum expansion. These formulae generalise the recently discussed subleading single-soft theorems. While both types of limits yield identical results at the leading order, differences appear at the subleading order. Finally, we discuss double-scalar emission in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. These results should be of use in establishing the algebraic structure of potential hidden symmetries in the quantum gravity and Yang-Mills S-matrix.

Comments on World-Sheet Form Factors in AdS/CFT

We study form factors in the light-cone gauge world-sheet theory for strings in AdS_5 x S^5. We perturbatively calculate the two-particle form factor in a closed su(2) sector to one-loop in the near-plane-wave limit and to two-loops in the Maldacena-Swanson limit. We also perturbatively solve the functional equation which follows from the form factor axioms for the world-sheet theory and show that the "minimal" solution correctly reproduces the discontinuities of the perturbative calculations. Finally we propose a prescription, valid for polynomial orders of the inverse world-sheet length, for extracting the finite-volume world-sheet matrix element from the form factors and show that the two-excitation matrix element matches with the thermodynamic limit of the spin-chain description of certain tree-level N=4 SYM structure constants.

Worldsheet Form Factors in AdS/CFT

We formulate a set of consistency conditions appropriate to worldsheet form factors in the massive, integrable but non-relativistic, light-cone gauge fixed AdS(5) x S**5 string theory. We then perturbatively verify that these conditions hold, at tree level in the near-plane-wave limit and to one loop in the near-flat (Maldacena-Swanson) limit, for a number of specific cases. We further study the form factors in the weakly coupled dual description, verifying that the relevant conditions naturally hold for the one-loop Heisenberg spin-chain. Finally, we note that the near-plane-wave expressions for the form factors, when further expanded in small momentum or, equivalently, large charge density, reproduce the thermodynamic limit of the spin-chain results at leading order.

Conformal Anomaly for Amplitudes in N=6 Superconformal Chern-Simons Theory

Scattering amplitudes in three-dimensional N=6 Chern-Simons theory are shown to be non-invariant with respect to the free representation of the osp(6|4) symmetry generators. At tree and one-loop level these "anomalous" terms occur only for non-generic, singular configurations of the external momenta and can be used to determine the form of the amplitudes. In particular we show that the symmetries predict that the one-loop six-point amplitude is non-vanishing and confirm this by means of an explicit calculation using generalized unitarity methods. We comment on the implications of this finding for any putative Wilson loop/amplitude duality in N=6 Chern-Simons theory.

A light-cone approach to three-point functions in AdS_5 x S^5

We consider worldsheet correlation functions for strings in AdS_5 x S^5 using a light-cone gauge for the worldsheet theory. We compute the saddle-point approximation to three-point functions of BMN vertex operators, all with large charges, by explicitly finding the intersection of three euclidean BMN strings. We repeat this calculation for non-BPS circular winding strings extended along a great circle of the S^5, though in this case the appropriate form of the vertex operator is uncertain. Furthermore, we compute the spectrum of fluctuations about euclidean BMN strings for generic boundary conditions, and show that the spectrum depends only on the total charge and not the details of the string configuration. We extend our considerations to include near-BMN vertex operators and through the evaluation of the string path integral make contact with the light-cone string field theory calculations of gauge theory three-point structure constants.

On All-loop Integrands of Scattering Amplitudes in Planar N=4 SYM

We study the relationship between the momentum twistor MHV vertex expansion of planar amplitudes in N=4 super-Yang-Mills and the all-loop generalization of the BCFW recursion relations. We demonstrate explicitly in several examples that the MHV vertex expressions for tree-level amplitudes and loop integrands satisfy the recursion relations. Furthermore, we introduce a rewriting of the MHV expansion in terms of sums over non-crossing partitions and show that this cyclically invariant formula satisfies the recursion relations for all numbers of legs and all loop orders.

One-Loop Superconformal and Yangian Symmetries of Scattering Amplitudes in N=4 Super Yang-Mills

Recently it has been argued that tree-level scattering amplitudes in N=4 Yang-Mills theory are uniquely determined by a careful study of their superconformal and Yangian symmetries. However, at one-loop order these symmetries are known to become anomalous due to infrared divergences. We compute these one-loop anomalies for amplitudes defined through dimensional regularisation by studying the tree-level symmetry transformations of the unitarity branch cuts, keeping track of the crucial collinear terms arising from the holomorphic anomaly. We extract the superconformal anomalies and show that they may be cancelled through a universal one-loop deformation of the tree-level symmetry generators which involves only tree-level data. Specialising to the planar theory we also obtain the analogous deformation for the level-one Yangian generator of momentum. Explicit checks of our one-loop deformation are performed for MHV and the 6-point NMHV amplitudes.

Review of AdS/CFT Integrability, Chapter II.2: Quantum Strings in AdS5xS5

We review the semiclassical analysis of strings in AdS5xS5 with a focus on the relationship to the underlying integrable structures. We discuss the perturbative calculation of energies for strings with large charges, using the folded string spinning in an AdS3 subset of AdS5 as our main example. Furthermore, we review the perturbative light-cone quantization of the string theory and the calculation of the worldsheet S-matrix.

Worldsheet Scattering in AdS_5 x S^5

We calculate the S-matrix in the gauge-fixed sigma-model on AdS_5 x S^5 to the leading order in perturbation theory, and analyze how supersymmetry is realized on the scattering states. A mild nonlocality of the supercharges implies that their action on multi-particle states does not follow the Leibniz rule, which is replaced by a nontrivial coproduct. The plane wave symmetry algebra is thus naturally enhanced to a Hopf algebra. The scattering matrix elements obey the classical Yang-Baxter equation modified by the existence of the coproduct. This structure mirrors that of the large 't Hooft coupling expansion of the S-matrix for the spin chain in the dual super-Yang-Mills theory.

Higher Impurity AdS/CFT Correspondence in the Near-BMN Limit

The pp-wave/BMN limit of the AdS/CFT correspondence has exposed the Maldacena conjecture to a new regimen of direct tests. In one line of pursuit, finite-radius curvature corrections to the Penrose limit (which appear in inverse powers of the string angular momentum J) have been found to induce a complicated system of interaction perturbations to string theory on the pp-wave; these have been successfully matched to corresponding corrections to the BMN dimensions of N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) operators to two loops in the 't Hooft coupling lambda. This result is tempered by a well-established breakdown in the correspondence at three loops. Notwithstanding the third-order mismatch, we proceed with this line of investigation by subjecting the string and gauge theories to new and significantly more rigorous tests. Specifically, we extend our earlier results at O(1/J) in the curvature expansion to include string states and SYM operators with three worldsheet or R-charge impurities. In accordance with the two-impurity problem, we find a perfect and intricate agreement between both sides of the correspondence to two-loop order in lambda and, once again, the string and gauge theory predictions fail to agree at third order.

Holography Beyond the Penrose Limit

The flat pp-wave background geometry has been realized as a particular Penrose limit of AdS_5 x S^5. It describes a string that has been infinitely boosted along an equatorial null geodesic in the S^5 subspace. The string worldsheet Hamiltonian in this background is free. Finite boosts lead to curvature corrections that induce interacting perturbations of the string worldsheet Hamiltonian. We develop a systematic light-cone gauge quantization of the interacting worldsheet string theory and use it to obtain the interacting spectrum of the so-called `two-impurity' states of the string. The quantization is technically rather intricate and we provide a detailed account of the methods we use to extract explicit results. We give a systematic treatment of the fermionic states and are able to show that the spectrum possesses the proper extended supermultiplet structure (a non-trivial fact since half the supersymmetry is nonlinearly realized). We test holography by comparing the string energy spectrum with the scaling dimensions of corresponding gauge theory operators. We confirm earlier results that agreement obtains in low orders of perturbation theory, but breaks down at third order. The methods presented here can be used to explore these issues in a wider context than is specifically dealt with in this paper.

Lattice Super Yang-Mills: A Virial Approach to Operator Dimensions

The task of calculating operator dimensions in the planar limit of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory can be vastly simplified by mapping the dilatation generator to the Hamiltonian of an integrable spin chain. The Bethe ansatz has been used in this context to compute the spectra of spin chains associated with various sectors of the theory which are known to decouple in the planar (large-N_c) limit. These techniques are powerful at leading order in perturbation theory but become increasingly complicated beyond one loop in the 't Hooft parameter lambda=g_YM^2 N_c, where spin chains typically acquire long-range (non-nearest-neighbor) interactions. In certain sectors of the theory, moreover, higher-loop Bethe ansaetze do not even exist. We develop a virial expansion of the spin chain Hamiltonian as an alternative to the Bethe ansatz methodology, a method which simplifies the computation of dimensions of multi-impurity operators at higher loops in lambda. We use these methods to extract previously reported numerical gauge theory predictions near the BMN limit for comparison with corresponding results on the string theory side of the AdS/CFT correspondence. For completeness, we compare our virial results with predictions that can be derived from current Bethe ansatz technology.

Quantizing String Theory in AdS_5 X S^5: Beyond the pp-Wave

In a certain kinematic limit, where the effects of spacetime curvature (and other background fields) greatly simplify, the light-cone gauge world-sheet action for a type IIB superstring on AdS_5 x S^5 reduces to that of a free field theory. It has been conjectured by Berenstein, Maldacena, and Nastase that the energy spectrum of this string theory matches the dimensions of operators in the appropriately defined large R-charge large-N_c sector of N=4 supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory in four dimensions. This holographic equivalence is thought to be exact, independent of any simplifying kinematic limits. As a step toward verifying this larger conjecture, we have computed the complete set of first curvature corrections to the spectrum of light-cone gauge string theory that arises in the expansion of AdS_5 x S^5 about the plane-wave limit. The resulting spectrum has the complete dependence on lambda = g_YM^2 N_c; corresponding results in the gauge theory are known only to second order in lambda. We find precise agreement to this order, including the N=4 extended supermultiplet structure. In the process, we demonstrate that the complicated schemes put forward in recent years for defining the Green--Schwarz superstring action in background Ramond-Ramond fields can be reduced to a practical (and correct) method for quantizing the string.
