The SAGEX Review on Scattering Amplitudes, Chapter 1: Modern Fundamentals of Amplitudes

This chapter introduces the foundational elements of scattering amplitudes. It is meant to be accessible to readers with only a basic understanding of quantum field theory. Topics covered include: the four-dimensional spinor-helicity formalism and the colour decomposition of Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes; the study of soft and collinear limits of Yang-Mills and gravity amplitudes; the BCFW recursion relation and generalised unitarity, also in the superamplitudes formalism of $\mathcal{N}{=}4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills; an overview of standard and hidden symmetries of the $S$-matrix of $\mathcal{N}{=}4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills, such as the conformal, dual conformal and Yangian symmetries; and a brief excursus on form factors of protected and non-protected operators in Yang-Mills theory. Several examples and explicit calculations are also provided.

Double Field Theory as the Double Copy of Yang-Mills

We show that double field theory arises from the color-kinematic double copy of Yang-Mills theory. A precise double copy prescription for the Yang-Mills action at quadratic and cubic order is provided that yields the double field theory action in which the duality invariant dilaton has been integrated out. More precisely, at quadratic order this yields the gauge invariant double field theory, while at cubic order it yields the cubic double field theory action subject to a gauge condition that originates from Siegel gauge in string field theory.

Classical black hole scattering from a worldline quantum field theory

A precise link is derived between scalar-graviton S-matrix elements and expectation values of operators in a worldline quantum field theory (WQFT), both used to describe classical scattering of a pair of black holes. The link is formally provided by a worldline path integral representation of the graviton-dressed scalar propagator, which may be inserted into a traditional definition of the S-matrix in terms of time-ordered correlators. To calculate expectation values in the WQFT a new set of Feynman rules is introduced which treats the gravitational field $h_{μν}(x)$ and position $x_i^μ(τ_i)$ of each black hole on equal footing. Using these both the next-order classical gravitational radiation $\langle h^{μν}(k)\rangle$ (previously unknown) and deflection $Δp_i^μ$ from a binary black hole scattering event are obtained. The latter can also be obtained from the eikonal phase of a $2\to2$ scalar S-matrix, which we show to correspond to the free energy of the WQFT.

Classical Double Copy of Worldline Quantum Field Theory

The recently developed worldline quantum field theory (WQFT) formalism for the classical gravitational scattering of massive bodies is extended to massive, charged point particles coupling to bi-adjoint scalar field theory, Yang-Mills theory, and dilaton-gravity. We establish a classical double copy relation in these WQFTs for classical observables (deflection, radiation). The bi-adjoint scalar field theory fixes the locality structure of the double copy from Yang-Mills to dilaton-gravity. Using this the eikonal scattering phase (or free energy of the WQFT) is computed to next-to-leading order (NLO) in coupling constants using the double copy as well as directly finding full agreement. We clarify the relation of our approach to previous studies in the effective field theory formalism. Finally, the equivalence of the WQFT double copy to the double copy relation of the classical limit of quantum scattering amplitudes is shown explicitly up to NLO.

Two-Point Correlator of Chiral Primary Operators with a Wilson Line Defect in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

We study the two-point function of the stress-tensor multiplet of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM in the presence of a line defect. To be more precise, we focus on the single-trace operator of conformal dimension two that sits in the $20'$ irrep of the $\mathfrak{so}(6)_\text{R}$ R-symmetry, and add a Maldacena-Wilson line to the configuration which makes the two-point function non-trivial. We use a combination of perturbation theory and defect CFT techniques to obtain results up to next-to-leading order in the coupling constant. Being a defect CFT correlator, there exist two (super)conformal block expansions which capture defect and bulk data respectively. We present a closed-form formula for the defect CFT data, which allows to write an efficient Taylor series for the correlator in the limit when one of the operators is close to the line. The bulk channel is technically harder and closed-form formulae are particularly challenging to obtain, nevertheless we use our analysis to check against well-known data of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. In particular, we recover the correct anomalous dimensions of a famous tower of twist-two operators (which includes the Konishi multiplet), and successfully compare the one-point function of the stress-tensor multiplet with results obtained using matrix-model techniques.

N=4 super Yang-Mills correlators without anti-commuting variables

Quantum correlators of pure supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in D=3,4,6 and 10 dimensions can be reformulated via the non-linear and non-local transformation (`Nicolai map') that maps the full functional measure of the interacting theory to that of a free bosonic theory. As a special application we show that for the maximally extended N=4 theory in four dimensions, and up to order O(g^2), all known results for scalar correlators can be recovered in this way without any use of anti-commuting variables, in terms of a purely bosonic and ghost free functional measure for the gauge fields. This includes in particular the dilatation operator yielding the anomalous dimensions of composite operators. The formalism is thus competitive with more standard perturbative techniques.

The Double Copy of Massive Scalar-QCD

We construct the gravitational theory emerging from the double-copy of massive scalar quantum chromodynamics in general dimensions. The resulting two-form-dilaton-gravity theory couples to flavored massive scalars gravitationally and via the dilaton. It displays scalar self-interaction terms of arbitrary even order in the fields but quadratic in derivatives. We work out the emerging Lagrangian explicitly up to the sixth order in scalar fields and propose an all order form.

Double-Soft Limits of Gluons and Gravitons

The double-soft limit of gluon and graviton amplitudes is studied in four dimensions at tree level. In general this limit is ambiguous and we introduce two natural ways of taking it: A consecutive double-soft limit where one particle is taken soft before the other and a simultaneous limit where both particles are taken soft uniformly. All limits yield universal factorisation formulae which we establish by BCFW recursion relations down to the subleading order in the soft momentum expansion. These formulae generalise the recently discussed subleading single-soft theorems. While both types of limits yield identical results at the leading order, differences appear at the subleading order. Finally, we discuss double-scalar emission in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. These results should be of use in establishing the algebraic structure of potential hidden symmetries in the quantum gravity and Yang-Mills S-matrix.

Integrability of Smooth Wilson Loops in N=4 Superspace

We perform a detailed study of the Yangian symmetry of smooth supersymmetric Maldacena-Wilson loops in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. This hidden symmetry extends the global superconformal symmetry present for these observables. A gauge-covariant action of the Yangian generators on the Wilson line is established that generalizes previous constructions built upon path variations. Employing these generators the Yangian symmetry is proven for general paths in non-chiral N=4 superspace at the first perturbative order. The bi-local piece of the level-one generators requires the use of a regulator due to divergences in the coincidence limit. We perform regularization by point splitting in detail, thereby constructing additional local and boundary contributions as regularization for all level-one Yangian generators. Moreover, the Yangian algebra at level one is checked and compatibility with local kappa-symmetry is established. Finally, the consistency of the Yangian symmetry is shown to depend on two properties: The vanishing of the dual Coxeter number of the underlying superconformal algebra and the existence of a novel superspace "G-identity" for the gauge field theory. This tightly constrains the conformal gauge theories to which integrability can possibly apply.

Quantum Gravitational Contributions to the Standard Model Effective Potential and Vacuum Stability

We compute the quantum gravitational contributions to the standard model effective potential and analyze their effects on the Higgs vacuum stability in the framework of effective field theory. Non-renormalizability of Einstein gravity induces higher dimension $ϕ^{6}$ and $ϕ^{8}$ operators at the one-loop level with novel couplings $η_{1/2}$. The beta functions of these couplings are established and the impact of the gravity induced contributions on electroweak vacuum stability is studied. We find that the true minimum of the standard model effective potential now lies below the Planck scale for almost the entire parameter space ($η_{1/2}(m_\text{t})> 0.01$). In addition quantum gravity is shown to contribute to the minimal value of the standard model NLO effective potential at the percent level. The quantum gravity induced contributions yield a metastable vacuum for a large fraction of the parameter space in the flowing couplings $η_{1/2}$.

Smooth Wilson Loops in N=4 Non-Chiral Superspace

We consider a supersymmetric Wilson loop operator for 4d N=4 super Yang-Mills theory which is the natural object dual to the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring in the AdS/CFT correspondence. It generalizes the traditional bosonic 1/2 BPS Maldacena-Wilson loop operator and completes recent constructions in the literature to smooth (non-light-like) loops in the full N=4 non-chiral superspace. This Wilson loop operator enjoys global superconformal and local kappa-symmetry of which a detailed discussion is given. Moreover, the finiteness of its vacuum expectation value is proven at leading order in perturbation theory. We determine the leading vacuum expectation value for general paths both at the component field level up to quartic order in anti-commuting coordinates and in the full non-chiral superspace in suitable gauges. Finally, we discuss loops built from quadric splines joined in such a way that the path derivatives are continuous at the intersection.

Constraining subleading soft gluon and graviton theorems

We show that the form of the recently proposed subleading soft graviton and gluon theorems in any dimension are severely constrained by elementary arguments based on Poincaré and gauge invariance as well as a self-consistency condition arising from the distributional nature of scattering amplitudes. Combined with the assumption of a local form as it would arise from a Ward identity the orbital part of the subleading operators is completely fixed by the leading universal Weinberg soft pole behavior. The polarization part of the differential subleading soft operators in turn is determined up to a single numerical factor for each hard leg at every order in the soft momentum expansion. In four dimensions, factorization of the Lorentz group allows to fix the subleading operators completely.

Factorized soft graviton theorems at loop level

We analyze the low-energy behavior of scattering amplitudes involving gravitons at loop level in four dimensions. The single-graviton soft limit is controlled by soft operators which have been argued to separate into a factorized piece and a non-factorizing infrared divergent contribution. In this note we show that the soft operators responsible for the factorized contributions are strongly constrained by gauge and Poincare invariance under the assumption of a local structure. We show that the leading and subleading orders in the soft-momentum expansion can not receive radiative corrections. The first radiative correction occurs for the sub-subleading soft graviton operator and is one-loop exact. It depends on only two undetermined coefficients which should reflect the field content of the theory under consideration.

From Six to Four and More: Massless and Massive Maximal Super Yang-Mills Amplitudes in 6d and 4d and their Hidden Symmetries

A self-consistent exposition of the theory of tree-level superamplitudes of the 4d N=4 and 6d N=(1,1) maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories is provided. In 4d we work in non-chiral superspace and construct the superconformal and dual superconformal symmetry generators of the N=4 SYM theory using the non-chiral BCFW recursion to prove the latter. In 6d we provide a complete derivation of the standard and hidden symmetries of the tree-level superamplitudes of N=(1,1) SYM theory, again using the BCFW recursion to prove the dual conformal symmetry. Furthermore, we demonstrate that compact analytical formulae for tree-superamplitudes in N=(1,1) SYM can be obtained from a numerical implementation of the supersymmetric BCFW recursion relation. We derive compact manifestly dual conformal representations of the five- and six-point superamplitudes as well as arbitrary multiplicity formulae valid for certain classes of superamplitudes related to ultra-helicity-violating massive amplitudes in 4d. We study massive tree superamplitudes on the Coulomb branch of the N=4 SYM theory from dimensional reduction of the massless superamplitudes of the six-dimensional N=(1,1) SYM theory. We exploit this correspondence to construct the super-Poincare and enhanced dual conformal symmetries of massive tree superamplitudes in N=4 SYM theory which are shown to close into a finite dimensional algebra of Yangian type. Finally, we address the fascinating possibility of uplifting massless 4d superamplitudes to 6d massless superamplitudes proposed by Huang. We confirm the uplift for multiplicities up to eight but show that finding the uplift is highly non-trivial and in fact not of a practical use for multiplicities larger than five.

Harmonic R-matrices for Scattering Amplitudes and Spectral Regularization

Planar N=4 super Yang-Mills appears to be integrable. While this allows to find this theory's exact spectrum, integrability has hitherto been of no direct use for scattering amplitudes. To remedy this, we deform all scattering amplitudes by a spectral parameter. The deformed tree-level four-point function turns out to be essentially the one-loop R-matrix of the integrable N=4 spin chain satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation. Deformed on-shell three-point functions yield novel three-leg R-matrices satisfying bootstrap equations. Finally, we supply initial evidence that the spectral parameter might find its use as a novel symmetry-respecting regulator replacing dimensional regularization. Its physical meaning is a local deformation of particle helicity, a fact which might be useful for a much larger class of non-integrable four-dimensional field theories.

Spectral Parameters for Scattering Amplitudes in N=4 Super Yang-Mills Theory

Planar N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory appears to be a quantum integrable four-dimensional conformal theory. This has been used to find equations believed to describe its exact spectrum of anomalous dimensions. Integrability seemingly also extends to the planar space-time scattering amplitudes of the N=4 model, which show strong signs of Yangian invariance. However, in contradistinction to the spectral problem, this has not yet led to equations determining the exact amplitudes. We propose that the missing element is the spectral parameter, ubiquitous in integrable models. We show that it may indeed be included into recent on-shell approaches to scattering amplitude integrands, providing a natural deformation of the latter. Under some constraints, Yangian symmetry is preserved. Finally we speculate that the spectral parameter might also be the regulator of choice for controlling the infrared divergences appearing when integrating the integrands in exactly four dimensions.

Static Gauge and Energy Spectrum of Single-mode Strings in AdS_5xS^5

Motivated by the notorious difficulties in determining the first quantum corrections to the spectrum of short strings in AdS_5xS^5 from first principles, we study closed bosonic strings in this background employing a static gauge. In this gauge the world-sheet Hamiltonian density is constant along the extension of the string and directly proportional to the square of the spacetime energy. We quantize this system in a minisuperspace approach, in which we consider only a single AdS_5 string mode excitation next to an arbitrary particle like zero-mode contribution in the full AdS_5xS^5 background. We determine the quantum spectrum using this method to the next-to-next-to-leading order in the large 't Hooft coupling expansion. We argue for an ordering prescription which should arise from supersymmetrization and indeed recover the integrability based predictions for the spectrum of the lightest excitation, dual to the Konishi field scaling dimensions. The higher excitations fail to agree, but this is shown to be a consequence of the string mode truncation employed. Despite this simple setup, our system reveals intriguing features, such as a close connection to particles in AdS_6, classical integrability and preservation of the isometries of AdS_5xS^5 at the quantum level.

Yangian Symmetry of smooth Wilson Loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills Theory

We show that appropriately supersymmetrized smooth Maldacena-Wilson loop operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory are invariant under a Yangian symmetry Y[psu(2,2|4)] built upon the manifest superconformal symmetry algebra of the theory. The existence of this hidden symmetry is demonstrated at the one-loop order in the weak coupling limit as well as at leading order in the strong coupling limit employing the classical integrability of the dual AdS_5 x S^5 string description. The hidden symmetry generators consist of a canonical non-local second order variational derivative piece acting on the superpath, along with a novel local path dependent contribution. We match the functional form of these Yangian symmetry generators at weak and strong coupling and find evidence for an interpolating function. Our findings represent the smooth counterpart to the Yangian invariance of scattering superamplitudes dual to light-like polygonal super Wilson loops in the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory.

Bosonic String Quantization in Static Gauge

The bosonic string in D dimensional Minkowski space-time is quantized in static gauge. It is shown that the system can be described by D-1 massless free fields constrained on the surface L_m = 0, for m \neq 0, where L_m are the generators of conformal transformations. The free fields are quantized and the physical states are selected by the conditions L_m|phys>=0, for m>0. The Poincaré group generators on the physical Hilbert space are constructed and the critical dimension D=26 is recovered from the commutation relations of the boost operators. The equivalence with the covariant quantization is established. A possible generalization to the AdS string dynamics is discussed.

Comparing efficient computation methods for massless QCD tree amplitudes: Closed Analytic Formulae versus Berends-Giele Recursion

Recent advances in our understanding of tree-level QCD amplitudes in the massless limit exploiting an effective (maximal) supersymmetry have led to the complete analytic construction of tree-amplitudes with up to four external quark-anti-quark pairs. In this work we compare the numerical efficiency of evaluating these closed analytic formulae to a numerically efficient implementation of the Berends-Giele recursion. We compare calculation times for tree-amplitudes with parton numbers ranging from 4 to 25 with no, one, two and three external quark lines. We find that the exact results are generally faster in the case of MHV and NMHV amplitudes. Starting with the NNMHV amplitudes the Berends-Giele recursion becomes more efficient. In addition to the runtime we also compared the numerical accuracy. The analytic formulae are on average more accurate than the off-shell recursion relations though both are well suited for complicated phenomenological applications. In both cases we observe a reduction in the average accuracy when phase space configurations close to singular regions are evaluated. We believe that the above findings provide valuable information to select the right method for phenomenological applications.

Three-point functions in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills Theory for scalar operators up to length five at the one-loop order

We report on a systematic perturbative study of three-point functions in planar SU(N) N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at the one-loop level involving scalar field operators up to length five. For this we have computed a sample of 40 structure constants involving primary operators of up to and including length five which are built entirely from scalar fields. A combinatorial dressing technique has been developed to promote tree-level correlators to one-loop level. In addition we have resolved the mixing up to the order (g_YM)^2 level of the operators involved, which amounts to mixings with bi-fermions, with bi-derivative insertions as well as self-mixing contributions in the scalar sector. This work supersedes a preprint by two of the authors from 2010 which had neglected the mixing contributions.

Three-Point Functions of Twist-Two Operators in N=4 SYM at One Loop

We calculate three-point functions of two protected operators and one twist-two operator with arbitrary even spin j in N=4 SYM theory to one-loop order. In order to carry out the calculations we project the indices of the spin j operator to the light-cone and evaluate the correlator in a soft-limit where the momentum coming in at the spin j operator becomes zero. This limit largely simplifies the perturbative calculation, since all three-point diagrams effectively reduce to two-point diagrams and the dependence on the one-loop mixing matrix drops out completely. The results of our direct calculation are in agreement with the structure constants obtained by F.A. Dolan and H. Osborn from the operator product expansion of four-point functions of half-BPS operators.

All tree-level amplitudes in massless QCD

We derive compact analytical formulae for all tree-level color-ordered gauge theory amplitudes involving any number of external gluons and up to three massless quark-anti-quark pairs. A general formula is presented based on the combinatorics of paths along a rooted tree and associated determinants. Explicit expressions are displayed for the next-to-maximally helicity violating (NMHV) and next-to-next-to-maximally helicity violating (NNMHV) gauge theory amplitudes. Our results are obtained by projecting the previously-found expressions for the super-amplitudes of the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (N=4 SYM) onto the relevant components yielding all gluon-gluino tree amplitudes in N=4 SYM. We show how these results carry over to the corresponding QCD amplitudes, including massless quarks of different flavors as well as a single electroweak vector boson. The public Mathematica package GGT is described, which encodes the results of this work and yields analytical formulae for all N=4 SYM gluon-gluino trees. These in turn yield all QCD trees with up to four external arbitrary-flavored massless quark-anti-quark-pairs.

Coordinate representation of particle dynamics in AdS and in generic static spacetimes

We discuss the quantum dynamics of a particle in static curved spacetimes in a coordinate representation. The scheme is based on the analysis of the squared energy operator E^2, which is quadratic in momenta and contains a scalar curvature term. Our main emphasis is on AdS spaces, where this term is fixed by the isometry group. As a byproduct the isometry generators are constructed and the energy spectrum is reproduced. In the massless case the conformal symmetry is realized as well. We show the equivalence between this quantization and the covariant quantization, based on the Klein-Gordon type equation in AdS. We further demonstrate that the two quantization methods in an arbitrary (N+1)-dimensional static spacetime are equivalent to each other if the scalar curvature terms both in the operator E^2 and in the Klein-Gordon type equation have the same coefficient equal to (N-1)/(4N).

Light-like polygonal Wilson loops in 3d Chern-Simons and ABJM theory

We study light-like polygonal Wilson loops in three-dimensional Chern-Simons and ABJM theory to two-loop order. For both theories we demonstrate that the one-loop contribution to these correlators cancels. For pure Chern-Simons, we find that specific UV divergences arise from diagrams involving two cusps, implying the loss of finiteness and topological invariance at two-loop order. Studying those UV divergences we derive anomalous conformal Ward identities for n-cusped Wilson loops which restrict the finite part of the latter to conformally invariant functions. We also compute the four-cusp Wilson loop in ABJM theory to two-loop order and find that the result is remarkably similar to that of the corresponding Wilson loop in N=4 SYM. Finally, we speculate about the existence of a Wilson loop/scattering amplitude relation in ABJM theory.

On the Spectrum of the AdS_5xS^5 String at large lambda

We put forth a program for perturbatively quantizing the bosonic sector of the IIB superstring on AdS_5xS^5 in the large radius of curvature R (i.e. flat-space) limit, and in light-cone gauge. Using the quantization of the massive particle on AdS_5xS^5 as a guiding exercise, we read off the correct scaling of the particle coordinates in the large radius limit. In the corresponding large \sqrtλ=R^2/α' limit of the string the oscillator modes must be scaled differently from the zero modes. We compute the bosonic string Hamiltonian in this limit which gives the flat-space mass-squared operator at leading order, followed by a harmonic oscillator potential in the zero modes at subleading order. Using these ingredients we calculate the leading and sub-leading terms in the conformal dimension of the length-four Konishi state in the large-λlimit. Furthermore we work out the relevant terms of the energy expansion to next-to-next-to leading order, which are plagued by severe ordering ambiguities. This prevents us from determining the corrections to the spectrum at order λ^{-1/4}.

One-Loop Spectroscopy of Scalar Three-Point Functions in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills Theory

We report on a systematic study of scalar field three-point functions in planar SU(N) N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. The motivation for this work is to provide sufficient data for future conjectures on the higher-loop form of the structure constants possibly involving integrability. For this we have computed a sample of 70 structure constants at one-loop order involving primary operators of up to and including length five built entirely from scalar fields. We observe in all 17 cases occurring in our sample that the one-loop structure constant of two protected chiral primary operators and one unprotected operator is given by a simple linear function involving the anomalous scaling dimension of the latter. Moreover, a similar simple one-loop formula is proven for the three-point structure constants of the Konishi operator and two arbitrary protected or un-protected operators. It is again determined by the anomalous scaling dimensions of the operators involved.

The two-loop dilatation operator of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in the SO(6) sector

The dilatation operator of planar N=4 super Yang-Mills in the pure scalar SO(6) sector is derived at the two-loop order. Representation theory allows for eight free coefficients in an ansatz for the corresponding spin-chain hamiltonian acting on three adjacent scalar states. While four out of these follow from the known SU(2|3) sector two-loop dilatation operator, the remaining four coefficients are derived by diagrammatic techniques and a match to the known dimension of a length three primary operator. Finally, comments upon the use of this result for the evaluation of three-point structure functions of scalar operators at the one-loop order are given.

One-Loop Superconformal and Yangian Symmetries of Scattering Amplitudes in N=4 Super Yang-Mills

Recently it has been argued that tree-level scattering amplitudes in N=4 Yang-Mills theory are uniquely determined by a careful study of their superconformal and Yangian symmetries. However, at one-loop order these symmetries are known to become anomalous due to infrared divergences. We compute these one-loop anomalies for amplitudes defined through dimensional regularisation by studying the tree-level symmetry transformations of the unitarity branch cuts, keeping track of the crucial collinear terms arising from the holomorphic anomaly. We extract the superconformal anomalies and show that they may be cancelled through a universal one-loop deformation of the tree-level symmetry generators which involves only tree-level data. Specialising to the planar theory we also obtain the analogous deformation for the level-one Yangian generator of momentum. Explicit checks of our one-loop deformation are performed for MHV and the 6-point NMHV amplitudes.

Scattering into the fifth dimension of N=4 super Yang-Mills

We study an alternative to dimensional regularisation of planar scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory by going to the Coulomb phase of the theory. The infrared divergences are regulated by masses obtained from a Higgs mechanism, allowing us to work in four dimensions. The corresponding string theory set-up suggests that the amplitudes have an exact dual conformal symmetry. The latter acts on the kinematical variables of the amplitudes as well as on the Higgs masses in an effectively five dimensional space. We confirm this expectation by an explicit calculation in the gauge theory. A consequence of this exact dual conformal symmetry is a significantly reduced set of scalar basis integrals that are allowed to appear in an amplitude. For example, triangle sub-graphs are ruled out. We argue that the study of exponentiation of amplitudes is simpler in the Higgsed theory because evanescent terms in the mass regulator can be consistently dropped. We illustrate this by showing the exponentiation of a four-point amplitude to two loops. Finally, we also analytically compute the small mass expansion of a two-loop master integral with an internal mass.

The structure of n-point functions of chiral primary operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills at one-loop

We develop a compact representation of the one-loop n-point functions of all chiral primary operators in planar SU(N), N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in terms of tree-level disk correlation functions and the scalar one-loop box integral. As a check, known results for all four-point functions and for n-point extremal and near-extremal correlators are rederived. The result is then used to evaluate explicitly a selection of five and six-point functions. Our findings suggest that a general one-loop five-point function may be represented through the minimal four-point and five-point functions of weight two operators.

M-theory on pp-waves with a holomorphic superpotential and its membrane and matrix descriptions

We study a new class of inhomogeneous pp-wave solutions with 8 unbroken supersymmetries in D=11 supergravity. The 9 dimensional transverse space is Euclidean and split into 3 and 6 dimensional subspaces. The solutions have non-constant gauge flux, which are described in terms of an arbitrary holomorphic function of the complexified 6 dimensional space. The supermembrane and matrix theory descriptions are also provided and we identify the relevant supersymmetry transformation rules. The action also arises through a dimensional reduction of N=1, D=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory coupled to 3 gauge adjoint and chiral multiplets, whose interactions are determined by the holomorphic function of the supergravity solution now constituting the superpotential.

Wilson loops in 3-dimensional N=6 supersymmetric Chern-Simons Theory and their string theory duals

We study Wilson loops in the three-dimensional N=6 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory recently constructed by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena, that is conjectured to be dual to type IIA string theory on AdS_4 x CP^3. We construct loop operators in the Chern-Simons theory which preserve 1/6 of the supercharges and calculate their expectation value up to 2-loop order at weak coupling. The expectation value at strong coupling is found by constructing the string theory duals of these operators. For low dimensional representations these are fundamental strings, for high dimensional representations these are D2-branes and D6-branes. In support of this identification we demonstrate that these string theory solutions match the symmetries, charges and the preserved supersymmetries of their Chern-Simons theory counterparts.

Testing the nested light-cone Bethe equations of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring

We perform a detailed test of the quantum integrability of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring in uniform light-cone gauge in its near plane-wave limit. For this we establish the form of the general nested light-cone Bethe equations for the quantum string from the long range psu(2,2|4) Bethe equations of Beisert and Staudacher. Moreover the scheme for translating excited string states into Bethe root excitations is given. We then confront the direct perturbative diagonalization of the light-cone string Hamiltonian in the near plane-wave limit with the energy spectrum obtained from the general nested light-cone Bethe equations in various higher rank sectors. The analysis is performed both analytically and numerically up to the level of six impurity states and subsectors of maximal rank four. We find perfect agreement in all cases lending strong support to the quantum integrability of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring.

Spinning strings and integrable spin chains in the AdS/CFT correspondence

In this introductory review we discuss dynamical tests of the AdS_5 x S^5 string/N=4 super Yang-Mills duality. After a brief introduction to AdS/CFT we argue that semiclassical string energies yield information on the quantum spectrum of the string in the limit of large angular momenta on the S^5. The energies of the folded and circular spinning string solutions rotating on a S^3 within the S^5 are derived, which yield all loop predictions for the dual gauge theory scaling dimensions. These follow from the eigenvalues of the dilatation operator of N=4 super Yang-Mills in a minimal SU(2) subsector and we display its reformulation in terms of a Heisenberg s=1/2 spin chain along with the coordinate Bethe ansatz for its explicit diagonalization. In order to make contact to the spinning string energies we then study the thermodynamic limit of the one-loop gauge theory Bethe equations and demonstrate the matching with the folded and closed string result at this loop order. Finally the known gauge theory results at higher-loop orders are reviewed and the associated long-range spin chain Bethe ansatz is introduced, leading to an asymptotic all-loop conjecture for the gauge theory Bethe equations. This uncovers discrepancies at the three-loop order between gauge theory scaling dimensions and string theory energies and the implications of this are discussed. Along the way we comment on further developments and generalizations of the subject and point to the relevant literature.

We extend the study of the quantum mechanics of BMN gauge theory to the sector of three scalar impurities at one loop and all genus. The relevant matrix elements of the non-planar one loop dilatation operator are computed in the gauge theory basis. After a similarity transform the BMN gauge theory prediction for the corresponding piece of the plane wave string Hamiltonian is derived and shown to agree with light-cone string field theory. In the three-impurity sector single string states are unstable for the decay into two-string states at leading order in g_2. The corresponding decay widths are computed.

On the Integrability of large N Plane-Wave Matrix Theory

We show the three-loop integrability of large N plane-wave matrix theory in a subsector of states comprised of two complex light scalar fields. This is done by diagonalizing the theory's Hamiltonian in perturbation theory and taking the large N limit. At one-loop level the result is known to be equal to the Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain, which is a well-known integrable system. Here, integrability implies the existence of hidden conserved charges and results in a degeneracy of parity pairs in the spectrum. In order to confirm integrability at higher loops, we show that this degeneracy is not lifted and that (corrected) conserved charges exist. Plane-wave matrix theory is intricately connected to N=4 Super Yang-Mills, as it arises as a consistent reduction of the gauge theory on a three-sphere. We find that after appropriately renormalizing the mass parameter of the plane-wave matrix theory the effective Hamiltonian is identical to the dilatation operator of N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory in the considered subsector. Our results therefore represent a strong support for the conjectured three-loop integrability of planar N=4 SYM and are in disagreement with a recent dual string theory finding. Finally, we study the stability of the large N integrability against nonsupersymmetric deformations of the model.

Two Loops to Two Loops in N=4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory

We present a full two-loop O(g^6) perturbative field theoretic calculation of the expectation value of two circular Maldacena-Wilson loops in D=4 N=4 supersymmetric U(N) gauge theory. It is demonstrated that, after taking into account very subtle cancellations of bulk and boundary divergences, the result is completely finite without any renormalization. As opposed to previous lower order calculations existing in the literature, internal vertex diagrams no longer cancel identically and lead to subleading corrections to the dominant ladder diagrams. Taking limits, we proceed to extract the two-loop static potential corresponding to two infinite anti-parallel lines. Our result gives some evidence that the existing strong-coupling calculations using the AdS/CFT conjecture might sum up the full set of large N planar Feynman diagrams.

Vertex Operators for the Supermembrane

We derive the vertex operators that are expected to govern the emission of the massless d=11 supermultiplet from the supermembrane in the light cone gauge. We demonstrate that they form a representation of the supersymmetry algebra and reduce to the type IIA superstring vertex operators under double dimensional reduction, as well as to the vertices of the d=11 superparticle in the point-particle limit. As a byproduct, our results can be used to derive the corresponding vertex operators for matrix theory and to describe its linear coupling to an arbitrary d=11 supergravity background. Possible applications are discussed.

Vertex Operators for the Supermembrane and Background Field Matrix Theory

We derive the vertex operators that are expected to govern the emission of the massless d=11 supermultiplet from the supermembrane in the light cone gauge. Our results immediately imply the linear coupling of matrix theory to an arbitrary supergravity background to all orders in anticommuting coordinates. Finally we address the definition of n-point tree level and one-loop scattering amplitudes. The resulting 3-point tree level amplitudes turn out to agree with d=11 supergravity and are completely fixed by supersymmetry and the existence of a normalizable ground state.

Yang-Mills Integrals

SU(N) Yang-Mills integrals form a new class of matrix models which, in their maximally supersymmetric version, are relevant to recent non-perturbative definitions of 10-dimensional IIB superstring theory and 11-dimensional M-theory. We demonstrate how Monte Carlo methods may be used to establish important properties of these models. In particular we consider the partition functions as well as the matrix eigenvalue distributions. For the latter we derive a number of new exact results for SU(2). We also report preliminary computations of Wilson loops. (Based on talk presented by M.
