Infrared Properties of Quantum Gravity: UV/IR Mixing, Gravitizing the Quantum -- Theory and Observation

We discuss the possible appearance of several rather exotic phenomena in quantum gravity, including UV/IR mixing, novel modifications of infrared phenomenology that extend effective field theory approaches, and the relaxation of the usual notions of locality. We discuss the relevance of such concepts in quantum gravity for quantum information science, cosmology and general quantum gravity phenomenology.

Quantum Gravity and Phenomenology: Dark Matter, Dark Energy, Vacuum Selection, Emergent Spacetime, and Wormholes

We discuss the relevance of quantum gravity to the frontier questions in high energy phenomenology: the problems of dark matter, dark energy, and vacuum selection as well as the problems of emergent spacetime and wormholes. Dark matter and dark energy phenomenology, and the problem of vacuum selection are discussed within the context of string theory as a model of quantum gravity. Emergent spacetime and wormholes are discussed in a more general context of effective theories of quantum gravity.

On Calabi-Yau generalized complete intersections from Hirzebruch varieties and novel K3-fibrations

We consider the construction of Calabi-Yau varieties recently generalized to where the defining equations may have negative degrees over some projective space factors in the embedding space. Within such "generalized complete intersection" Calabi-Yau ("gCICY") three-folds, we find several sequences of distinct manifolds. These include both novel elliptic and K3-fibrations and involve Hirzebruch surfaces and their higher dimensional analogues. En route, we generalize the standard techniques of cohomology computation to these generalized complete intersection Calabi-Yau varieties.

On Supermultiplet Twisting and Spin-Statistics

Twisting of off-shell supermultiplets in models with 1+1-dimensional spacetime has been discovered in 1984, and was shown to be a generic feature of off-shell representations in worldline supersymmetry two decades later. It is shown herein that in all supersymmetric models with spacetime of four or more dimensions, this off-shell supermultiplet twisting, if non-trivial, necessarily maps regular (non-ghost) supermultiplets to ghost supermultiplets. This feature is shown to be ubiquitous in all fully off-shell supersymmetric models with (BV/BRST-treated) constraints.

Weaving Worldsheet Supermultiplets from the Worldlines Within

Using the fact that every worldsheet is ruled by two (light-cone) copies of worldlines, the recent classification of off-shell supermultiplets of N-extended worldline supersymmetry is extended to construct standard off-shell and also unidextrous (on the half-shell) supermultiplets of worldsheet (p,q)-supersymmetry with no central extension. In the process, a new class of error-correcting (even-split doubly-even linear block) codes is introduced and classified for $p+q \leq 8$, providing a graphical method for classification of such codes and supermultiplets. This also classifies quotients by such codes, of which many are not tensor products of worldline factors. Also, supermultiplets that admit a complex structure are found to be depictable by graphs that have a hallmark twisted reflection symmetry.

A Q-Continuum of Off-Shell Supermultiplets

We explore a continuum of observably and usefully inequivalent, finite-dimensional off-shell representations of worldline N=4-extended supersymmetry, differing from one another only in the value of a "tuning parameter." Their dynamics turns out to be nontrivial already when restricting to just bilinear Lagrangians. In particular, we find a 34-parameter family of bilinear Lagrangians that couple two differently "tuned" of these supermultiplets to each other and to external magnetic fields, where the explicit dependence on the tuning parameters cannot be removed by any field redefinition and so is observable.

Golden Ratio Controlled Chaos in Supersymmetric Dynamics

We construct supersymmetric Lagrangians for the recently constructed off-shell worldline N=3 supermultiplet $Y_I/(i D_I X)$ for I=1,2,3, where $Y_I$ and $X$ are standard, Salam-Strathdee superfields: $Y_I$ fermionic and $X$ bosonic. Already the Lagrangian bilinear in component fields exhibits a total of thirteen free parameters, seven of which specify Zeeman-like coupling to external (magnetic) fluxes. All but special subsets of this parameter space describe aperiodic oscillatory response, some of which are controlled by the "golden ratio," $φ\approx1.61803$. We also show that all of these Lagrangians admit an $N=3\to 4$ supersymmetry extension, while a subset admits two inequivalent such extensions.

On General Off-Shell Representations of Worldline (1D) Supersymmetry

Every finite-dimensional unitary representation of the N-extended worldline supersymmetry without central charges may be obtained by a sequence of differential transformations from a direct sum of minimal Adinkras, simple supermultiplets that are identifiable with representations of the Clifford algebra. The data specifying this procedure is a sequence of subspaces of the direct sum of Adinkras, which then opens an avenue for classification of the continuum of so constructed off-shell supermultiplets.

On the Construction and the Structure of Off-Shell Supermultiplet Quotients

Recent efforts to classify representations of supersymmetry with no central charge have focused on supermultiplets that are aptly depicted by Adinkras, wherein every supersymmetry generator transforms each component field into precisely one other component field or its derivative. Herein, we study gauge-quotients of direct sums of Adinkras by a supersymmetric image of another Adinkra and thus solve a puzzle from Ref.[2]: The so-defined supermultiplets do not produce Adinkras but more general types of supermultiplets, each depicted as a connected network of Adinkras. Iterating this gauge-quotient construction then yields an indefinite sequence of ever larger supermultiplets, reminiscent of Weyl's construction that is known to produce all finite-dimensional unitary representations in Lie algebras.

On the Mirage of the Classical Electron of Uhlenbeck and Goudsmit

The idea that the electron is an extended charged object the spinning of which is responsible for its magnetic moment is shown to require a sizable portion of the electron to spin at speeds very close to the speed of light, and in fact to explode within an unacceptably short time, ~1E-31 s. The experimentally well-established magnetic moment of elementary particles such as the electron therefore must be accepted as an intrinsic property, with no need for classical models based on spatially extended objects. Emphasizing these facts in education, as early as possible, is important to the framing of the proper mind-set.

Spectrum-Generating Superalgebra for Linear Harmonic Oscillators

We show that the Hilbert space of the standard linear harmonic oscillator is a complete orbit of the osp(2,1;2) spectrum-generating superalgebra, and that this is the smallest such algebraic structure. The ubiquitous appearance of the linear harmonic oscillator in virtually all domains of theoretical physics guarantees a corresponding ubiquity of appropriate generalizations of this spectrum-generating superalgebra.

Unidexterously Constrained Worldsheet Superfields

Super-constrained superfields have provided for most of the best-known and oft-used representations of supersymmetry. The abelian nature of the Lorentz symmetry on the worldsheet turns out to continue permitting the discovery of new representations, long after the discovery of twisted chiral superfields. Just as the latter were effectively used in Lagrangian studies of mirror symmetry, it would seem hopeful that the new representations discussed herein may find their own niche too.

Worldsheet Matter Superfields on Half-Shell

In this paper we discuss some of the effects of using "unidexterous" worldsheet superfields, which satisfy worldsheet differential constraints and so are partly on-shell, i.e., on half-shell. Most notably, this results in a stratification of the field space that reminds of "brane-world" geometries. Linear dependence on such superfields provides a worldsheet generalization of the super-Zeeman effect. In turn, non-linear dependence yields additional left-right asymmetric dynamical constraints on the propagating fields, again in a stratified fashion.

Off-shell supersymmetry and filtered Clifford supermodules

An off-shell representation of supersymmetry is a representation of the super Poincare algebra on a dynamically unconstrained space of fields. We describe such representations formally, in terms of the fields and their spacetime derivatives, and we interpret the physical concept of engineering dimension as an integral grading. We prove that formal graded off-shell representations of one-dimensional N-extended supersymmetry, i.e., the super Poincare algebra p^{1|N}, correspond to filtered Clifford supermodules over Cl(N). We also prove that formal graded off-shell representations of two-dimensional (p,q)-supersymmetry, i.e., the super Poincare algebra p^{1,1|p,q}, correspond to bifiltered Clifford supermodules over Cl(p+q). Our primary tools are the formal deformations of filtered superalgebras and supermodules, which give a one-to-one correspondence between filtered spaces and graded spaces with even degree-shifting injections. This generalizes the machinery developed by Gerstenhaber to prove that every filtered algebra is a deformation of its associated graded algebra. Our treatment extends Gerstenhaber's discussion to the case of filtrations which are compatible with a supersymmetric structure, as well as to filtered modules in addition to filtered algebras. We also describe the analogous constructions for bifiltrations and bigradings.

On the Geometry and Homology of Certain Simple Stratified Varieties

We study certain mild degenerations of algebraic varieties which appear in the analysis of a large class of supersymmetric theories, including superstring theory. We analyze Witten's sigma-model and find that the non-transversality of the superpotential induces a singularization and stratification of the ground state variety. This stratified variety (the union of the singular ground state variety and its exo-curve strata) admit homology groups which, excepting the middle dimension, satisfy the "Kahler package" of requirements, extend the "flopped" pair of small resolutions to an "(exo)flopped" triple, and is compatible with mirror symmetry and string theory. Finally, we revisit the conifold transition as it applies to our formalism.

CNM Models, Holomorphic Functions and Projective Superspace C-Maps

Continuing the investigation of CNM (chiral-nonminimal) hypermultiplet nonlinear sigma-models, we propose extensions of the concept of the c-map which relate holomorphic functions to hyper-Kahler geometries. In particular, we show that a whole series of hyper-Kahler potentials can be derived by replacing the role of the 4D, N = 1 tensor multiplet in the original c-map by 4D, N = 1 non-minimal multiplets and auxiliary superfields. The resulting N = 2 models appear to have interesting connections to Calabi-Yau manifolds and algebraic varieties. These models also emphasize the fact that special hyper-Kahler manifolds (the analogs of special Kahler manifolds) without isometries exist.

Linear and Chiral Superfields are Usefully Inequivalent

Chiral superfields have been used, and extensively, almost ever since supersymmetry has been discovered. Complex linear superfields afford an alternate representation of matter, but are widely misbelieved to be 'physically equivalent' to chiral ones. We prove the opposite is true. Curiously, this re-enables a previously thwarted interpretation of the low-energy (super)field limit of superstrings.

On A Stringy Singular Cohomology

String theory has already motivated, suggested, and sometimes well-nigh proved a number of interesting and sometimes unexpected mathematical results, such as mirror symmetry. A careful examination of the behavior of string propagation on (mildly) singular varieties similarly suggests a new type of (co)homology theory. It has the `good behavior' of the well established intersection (co)homology and $L^2$-cohomology, but is markedly different in some aspects. For one, unlike the intersection (co)homology and the $L^2$-cohomology (or any other known thus far), this new cohomology is symmetric with respect to the mirror map. Among the available choices, this makes it into a prime candidate for describing the string theory zero modes in geometrical terms.

Spacetime Variable Superstring Vacua

In a general superstring vacuum configuration, the `internal' space (sector) varies in spacetime. When this variation is non-trivial only in two space-like dimensions, the vacuum contains static cosmic strings with finite energy per unit length and which is, up to interactions with matter, an easily computed topological invariant. The total spacetime is smooth although the `internal' space is singular at the center of each cosmic string. In a similar analysis of the Wick-rotated Euclidean model, these cosmic strings acquire expected self-interactions. Also, a possibility emerges to define a global time in order to rotate back to the Lorentzian case.
