Conformally invariant complete metrics

For a domain $G$ in the one-point compactification $\overline{\mathbb{R}}^n = \mathbb{R}^n \cup \{ \infty\}$ of $\mathbb{R}^n, n \ge 2$, we characterize the completeness of the modulus metric $μ_G$ in terms of a potential-theoretic thickness condition of $\partial G\,,$ Martio's $M$-condition. Next, we prove that $\partial G$ is uniformly perfect if and only if $μ_G$ admits a minorant in terms of a Möbius invariant metric. Several applications to quasiconformal maps are given.

On geometric properties of ratio of two hypergeometric functions

R. Küstner proved in his 2002 paper that the function $w_{a,b,c}(z)=$ $F(a+1,b;c;z)/F(a,b;c;z)$ maps the unit disk $|z|<1$ onto a domain convex in the direction of the imaginary axis under some condition on the real parameters $a,b,c.$ Here $F(a,b;c;z)$ stands for the Gaussian hypergeometric function. In this paper, we study the order of convexity of $w_{a,b,c}.$ In particular, we partially solve the problem raised by the afore-mentioned paper by Küstner.

Teichmüller's theorem in higher dimensions and its applications

For a given ring (domain) in $\overline{\mathbb{R}}^n$ we discuss whether its boundary components can be separated by an annular ring with modulus nearly equal to that of the given ring. In particular, we show that, for all $n\ge 3\,,$ the standard definition of uniformly perfect sets in terms of Euclidean metric is equivalent to the boundedness of moduli of separating rings. We also establish separation theorems for a "half" of a ring. As applications of those results, we will prove boundary Hölder continuity of quasiconformal mappings of the ball or the half space in $\mathbb{R}^n.$

Spirallikeness of shifted hypergeometric functions

In the present paper, we study spirallikenss (including starlikeness) of the shifted hypergeometric function $f(z)=z_2F_1(a,b;c;z)$ with complex parameters $a,b,c,$ where $_2F_1(a,b;c;z)$ stands for the Gaussian hypergeometric function. First, we observe the asymptotic behaviour of $_2F_1(a,b;c;z)$ around the point $z=1$ to obtain necessary conditions for $f$ to be $λ$-spirallike for a given $λ$ with $- π/2< λ<π/2.$ We next give sufficient conditions for $f$ to be $λ$-spirallike. As special cases, we obtain sufficient conditions of strong starlikeness and examples of spirallike, but not starlike, shifted hypergeometric functions.

Analytic and geometric properties of open door functions

In this paper, we study analytic and geometric properties of the solution $q(z)$ to the differential equation $q(z)+zq'(z)/q(z)=h(z)$ with the initial condition $q(0)=1$ for a given analytic function $h(z)$ on the unit disk $|z|<1$ in the complex plane with $h(0)=1.$ In particular, we investigate the possible largest constant $c>0$ such that the condition $|\Im[zf"(z)/f'(z)]|<c$ on $|z|<1$ implies starlikeness of an analytic function $f(z)$ on $|z|<1$ with $f(0)=f'(0)-1=0.$

On the second Hankel determinant of concave functions

In the present paper, we will discuss the Hankel determinants $H(f) =a_2a_4-a_3^2$ of order 2 for normalized concave functions $f(z)=z+a_2z^2+a_3z^3+\dots$ with a pole at $p\in(0,1).$ Here, a meromorphic function is called concave if it maps the unit disk conformally onto a domain whose complement is convex. To this end, we will characterize the coefficient body of order 2 for the class of analytic functions $φ(z)$ on $|z|<1$ with $|φ|<1$ and $φ(p)=p.$ We believe that this is helpful for other extremal problems concerning $a_2, a_3, a_4$ for normalized concave functions with a pole at $p.$

Univalent functions with half-integral coefficients

B. Friedman found in his 1946 paper that the set of analytic univalent functions on the unit disk in the complex plane with integral Taylor coefficients consists of nine functions. In the present paper, we prove that the similar set obtained by replacing "integral" by "half-integral" consists of another twelve functions in addition to the nine. We also observe geometric properties of the twelve functions.

Variability regions of close-to-convex functions

M. Biernacki gave concrete forms of the variability regions of $z/f(z)$ and $zf'(z)/f(z)$ of close-to-convex functions $f$ for a fixed $z$ with $|z|<1$ in 1936. The forms are, however, not necessarily convenient to determine the shape of the full variability region of $zf'(z)/f(z)$ over all close-to-convex functions $f$ and all points $z$ with $|z|<1.$ We will propose a couple of other forms of the variability regions and see that the full variability region of $zf'(z)/f(z)$ is indeed the complex plane minus the origin. We also apply them to study the variability regions of $\log[z/f(z)]$ and $\log[zf'(z)/f(z)].$

On $μ$-conformal homeomorphisms and boundary correspondence

We study the boundary correspondence under $μ$-homeomorphisms $f$ of the open upper half-plane onto itself. Sufficient conditions are given for $f$ to admit a homeomorphic extension to the closed half-plane with prescribed boundary regularity. The proofs are based on the modulus estimates for semiannuli in terms of directional dilatations of $f$ which might be of independent interest.

On power deformations of univalent functions

For an analytic function $f(z)$ on the unit disk $|z|<1$ with $f(0)=f'(0)-1=0$ and $f(z)\ne0, 0<|z|<1,$ we consider the power deformation $f_c(z)=z(f(z)/z)^c$ for a complex number $c.$ We determine those values $c$ for which the operator $f\mapsto f_c$ maps a specified class of univalent functions into the class of univalent functions. A little surprisingly, we will see that the set is described by the variability region of the quantity $zf'(z)/f(z),~|z|<1,$ for the class in most cases which we consider in the present paper. As an unexpected by-product, we show boundedness of strongly spirallike functions.

On univalence of the power deformation $z(f(z)/z)^c$

In this note, we mainly concern the set $U_f$ of $c\in\mathbb{C}$ such that the power deformation $z(f(z)/z)^c$ is univalent in the unit disk $|z|<1$ for a given analytic univalent function $f(z)=z+a_2z^2+\cdots$ in the unit disk. We will show that $U_f$ is a compact, polynomially convex subset of the complex plane $\C$ unless $f$ is the identity function. In particular, the interior of $U_f$ is simply connected. This fact enables us to apply various versions of the $λ$-lemma for the holomorphic family $z(f(z)/z)^c$ of injections parametrized over the interior of $U_f.$ We also give necessary or sufficient conditions for $U_f$ to contain $0$ or $1$ as an interior point.

Quasiconformal extension of strongly spirallike functions

We show that a strongly $λ$-spirallike function of order $α$ can be extended to a $\sin(πα/2)$-quasiconformal automorphism of the complex plane for $-π/2<λ<π/2$ and $0<α<1$ with $|λ|<πα/2.$ In order to prove it, we provide several geometric characterizations of a strongly $λ$-spirallike domain of order $α.$ We also give a concrete form of the mapping function of the standard strongly $λ$-spirallike domain $U_{λ,α}$ of order $α.$ A key tool of the present study is the notion of $λ$-argument, which was developed by Y. C. Kim and the author.

Sharp norm estimate of Schwarzian derivative for a class of convex functions

We establish a sharp norm estimate of the Schwarzian derivative for a function in the classes of convex functions introduced by Ma and Minda [Proceedings of the Conference on Complex Analysis, International Press Inc., 1992, 157-169]. As applications, we give sharp norm estimates for strongly convex functions of order $α,~0<α<1,$ and for uniformly convex functions.

Correspondence between spirallike functions and starlike functions

Let $λ$ be a real number with $-π/2<λ<π/2.$ In order to study $λ$-spirallike functions, it is natural to measure the angle according to $λ$-spirals. Thus we are led to the notion of $λ$-argument. This fits well the classical correspondence between $λ$-spirallike functions and starlike functions. Using this idea, we extend deep results of Pommerenke and Sheil-Small on starlike functions to spirallike functions. As an application, we solved a problem given by Hansen in 1971.
