Conformal capacity and polycircular domains

We study numerical conformal mapping of multiply connected planar domains with boundaries consisting of unions of finitely many circular arcs, so called polycircular domains. We compute the conformal capacities of condensers defined by polycircular domains. Experimental error estimates are provided for the computed capacity and, when possible, the rate of convergence under refinement of discretisation is analysed. The main ingredients of the computation are two computational methods, on one hand the boundary integral equation method combined with the fast multipole method and on the other hand the $hp$-FEM method. The results obtained with these two methods agree with high accuracy.

Conformal capacity of hedgehogs

In this paper we discuss problems concerning the conformal condenser capacity of "hedgehogs", which are compact sets $E$ in the unit disk $\mathbb{D}=\{z:\,|z|<1\}$ consisting of a central body $E_0$ that is typically a smaller disk $\overline{\mathbb{D}}_r=\{z:\,|z|\le r\}$, $0<r<1$, and several spikes $E_k$ that are compact sets lying on radial intervals $I(α_k)=\{te^{iα_k}:\,0\le t<1\}$. The main questions we are concerned with are the following: (1) How does the conformal capacity ${\rm cap}(E)$ of $E=\cup_{k=0}^n E_k$ behave when the spikes $E_k$, $k=1,\ldots,n$, move along the intervals $I(α_k)$ toward the central body if their hyperbolic lengths are preserved during the motion? (2) How does the capacity ${\rm cap}(E)$ depend on the distribution of angles between the spikes $E_k$? We prove several results related to these questions and discuss methods of applying symmetrization type transformations to study the capacity of hedgehogs. Several open problems, including problems on the capacity of hedgehogs in the three-dimensional hyperbolic space, also will be suggested.

Conformally invariant complete metrics

For a domain $G$ in the one-point compactification $\overline{\mathbb{R}}^n = \mathbb{R}^n \cup \{ \infty\}$ of $\mathbb{R}^n, n \ge 2$, we characterize the completeness of the modulus metric $μ_G$ in terms of a potential-theoretic thickness condition of $\partial G\,,$ Martio's $M$-condition. Next, we prove that $\partial G$ is uniformly perfect if and only if $μ_G$ admits a minorant in terms of a Möbius invariant metric. Several applications to quasiconformal maps are given.

Level sets of potential functions bisecting unbounded quadrilaterals

We study the mixed Dirichlet-Neumann problem for the Laplace equation in the complement of a bounded convex polygonal quadrilateral in the extended complex plane. The Dirichlet\,/\,Neumann conditions at opposite pairs of sides are $\{0,1\}$ and $\{0,0\},$ resp. The solution to this problem is a harmonic function in the unbounded complement of the polygon known as the \emph{potential function} of the quadrilateral. We compute the values of the potential function including its value at infinity.

Isoperimetric properties of condenser capacity

For compact subsets $E$ of the unit disk $ \mathbb{D}$ we study the capacity of the condenser ${\rm cap}( \mathbb{D},E)$ by means of set functionals defined in terms of hyperbolic geometry. In particular, we study experimentally the case of a hyperbolic triangle and arrive at the conjecture that of all triangles with the same hyperbolic area, the equilateral triangle has the least capacity.

Computation of conformal invariants

We study numerical computation of conformal invariants of domains in the complex plane. In particular, we provide an algorithm for computing the conformal capacity of a condenser. The algorithm applies for wide kind of geometries: domains are assumed to have smooth or piecewise smooth boundaries. The method we use is based on the boundary integral equation method developed and implemented in [30]. A characteristic feature of this method is that, with small changes in the code, a wide spectrum of problems can be treated and we include code snippets within the text to indicate implementation details. We compare the performance and accuracy to previous results in the cases when numerical data is available and also in the case of several model problems where exact results are available.

Conformal Invariants in Simply Connected Domains

We study numerical computation of several conformal invariants of simply connected domains in the complex plane including, the hyperbolic distance, the reduced modulus, the harmonic measure, and the modulus of a quadrilateral. The method we use is based on the boundary integral equation with the generalized Neumann kernel. Several numerical examples are presented. We validate the performance and accuracy of our method by considering several model problems with known analytic solutions.

Global bifurcation and stability of steady states for a bacterial colony model with density-suppressed motility

We investigate the structure and stability of the steady states for a bacterial colony model with density-suppressed motility. We treat the growth rate of bacteria as a bifurcation parameter to explore the local and global structure of the steady states. Relying on asymptotic analysis and the theory of Fredholm solvability, we derive the second-order approximate expression of the steady states. We analytically establish the stability criterion of the bifurcation solutions, and show that sufficiently large growth rate of bacteria leads to a stable uniform steady state. While the growth rate of bacteria is less than some certain value, there is pattern formation with the admissible wave mode. All the analytical results are corroborated by numerical simulations from different stages.

Numerical computation of Mityuk's function and radius for circular-radial slit domains

We consider Mityuk's function and radius which have been proposed in \cite{Mit} as generalizations of the reduced modulus and conformal radius to the cases of multiply connected domains. We present a numerical method to compute Mityuk's function and radius for canonical domains that consist of the unit disk with circular/radial slits. Our method is based on the boundary integral equation with the generalized Neumann kernel. Special attention is given to the validation of the theoretical results on the existence of critical points and the boundary behavior of Mityuk's radius.

On cyclic quadrilaterals in euclidean and hyperbolic geometries

Four points ordered in the positive order on the unit circle determine the vertices of a quadrilateral, which is considered either as a euclidean or as a hyperbolic quadrilateral depending on whether the lines connecting the vertices are euclidean or hyperbolic lines. In the case of hyperbolic lines, this type of quadrilaterals are called ideal quadrilaterals. Our main result gives a euclidean counterpart of an earlier result on the hyperbolic distances between the opposite sides of ideal quadrilaterals. The proof is based on computations involving hyperbolic geometry. We also found a new formula for the hyperbolic midpoint of a hyperbolic geodesic segment in the unit disk. As an application of some geometric properties, we provided a euclidean construction of the symmetrization of random four points on the unit circle with respect to a diameter which preserves the absolute cross ratio of quadruples.

Teichmüller's theorem in higher dimensions and its applications

For a given ring (domain) in $\overline{\mathbb{R}}^n$ we discuss whether its boundary components can be separated by an annular ring with modulus nearly equal to that of the given ring. In particular, we show that, for all $n\ge 3\,,$ the standard definition of uniformly perfect sets in terms of Euclidean metric is equivalent to the boundedness of moduli of separating rings. We also establish separation theorems for a "half" of a ring. As applications of those results, we will prove boundary Hölder continuity of quasiconformal mappings of the ball or the half space in $\mathbb{R}^n.$

The visual angle metric and quasiregular maps

The distortion of distances between points under maps is studied. We first prove a Schwarz-type lemma for quasiregular maps of the unit disk involving the visual angle metric. Then we investigate conversely the quasiconformality of a bilipschitz map with respect to the visual angle metric on convex domains. For the unit ball or half space, we prove that a bilipschitz map with respect to the visual angle metric is also bilipschitz with respect to the hyperbolic metric. We also obtain various inequalities relating the visual angle metric to other metrics such as the distance ratio metric and the quasihyperbolic metric.

Conformal modulus on domains with strong singularities and cusps

We study the problem of computing the conformal modulus of rings and quadrilaterals with strong singularities and cusps on their boundary. We reduce this problem to the numerical solution of the associated Dirichlet and Dirichlet-Neumann type boundary values problems for the Laplace equation. Several experimental results, with error estimates, are reported. In particular, we consider domains with dendrite like boundaries, in such cases where an analytic formula for the conformal modulus can be derived. Our numerical method makes use of an $hp$-FEM algorithm, written for this very complicated geometry with strong singularities.

On Quasi-inversions

Given a bounded domain $D \subset {\mathbb R}^n$ strictly starlike with respect to $0 \in D\,,$ we define a quasi-inversion w.r.t. the boundary $\partial D \,.$ We show that the quasi-inversion is bi-Lipschitz w.r.t. the chordal metric if and only if every "tangent line" of $\partial D$ is far away from the origin. Moreover, the bi-Lipschitz constant tends to $1,$ when $\partial D$ approaches the unit sphere in a suitable way. For the formulation of our results we use the concept of the $α$-tangent condition due to F. W. Gehring and J. Väisälä (Acta Math. 1965). This condition is shown to be equivalent to the bi-Lipschitz and quasiconformal extension property of what we call the polar parametrization of $\partial D$. In addition, we show that the polar parametrization, which is a mapping of the unit sphere onto $\partial D\,,$ is bi-Lipschitz if and only if $D$ satisfies the $α$-tangent condition.

Distortion of quasiconformal mappings with identity boundary values

Teichmüller's classical mapping problem for plane domains concerns finding a lower bound for the maximal dilatation of a quasiconformal homeomorphism which holds the boundary pointwise fixed, maps the domain onto itself, and maps a given point of the domain to another given point of the domain. For a domain $D \subset {\mathbb R}^n\,,n\ge 2\,,$ we consider the class of all $K$- quasiconformal maps of $D$ onto itself with identity boundary values and Teichmüller's problem in this context. Given a map $f$ of this class and a point $x\in D\,,$ we show that the maximal dilatation of $f$ has a lower bound in terms of the distance of $x$ and $f(x)$ in the distance ratio metric. For instance, convex domains, bounded domains and domains with uniformly perfect boundaries are studied.

On exterior moduli of quadrilaterals and special functions

In this paper two identities involving a function defined by the complete elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds are proved. Some functional inequalities and elementary estimates for this function are also derived from the properties of monotonicity and convexity of this function. As applications, some functional inequalities and the growth of the exterior modulus of a rectangle are studied.

On the subinvariance of uniform domains in Banach spaces

Suppose that $E$ and $E'$ denote real Banach spaces with dimension at least 2, that $D\subset E$ and $D'\subset E'$ are domains, and that $f: D\to D'$ is a homeomorphism. In this paper, we prove the following subinvariance property for the class of uniform domains: Suppose that $f$ is a freely quasiconformal mapping and that $D'$ is uniform. Then the image $f(D_1)$ of every uniform subdomain $D_1$ in $D$ under $f$ is still uniform. This result answers an open problem of Väisälä in the affirmative.

Quasihyperbolic metric and Möbius transformations

An improved version of quasiinvariance property of the quasihyperbolic metric under Möbius transformations of the unit ball in ${\mathbb R}^n, n \ge 2,$ is given. Next, a quasiinvariance property, sharp in a local sense, of the quasihyperbolic metric under quasiconformal mappings is proved. Finally, several inequalities between the quasihyperbolic metric and other commonly used metrics such as the hyperbolic metric of the unit ball and the chordal metric are established.

Sharp Lipschitz constants for the distance ratio metric

We study expansion/contraction properties of some common classes of mappings of the Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^n, n\ge 2\,,$ with respect to the distance ratio metric. The first main case is the behavior of Möbius transformations of the unit ball in ${\mathbb R}^n$ onto itself. In the second main case we study the polynomials of the unit disk onto a subdomain of the complex plane. In both cases sharp Lipschitz constants are obtained.

preprint2013arXiv

The visual angle metric and Möbius transformations

A new similarity invariant metric $v_G$ is introduced. The visual angle metric $v_G$ is defined on a domain $G\subsetneq\Rn$ whose boundary is not a proper subset of a line. We find sharp bounds for $v_G$ in terms of the hyperbolic metric in the particular case when the domain is either the unit ball $\Bn$ or the upper half space $\Hn$. We also obtain the sharp Lipschitz constant for a Möbius transformation $f: G\rightarrow G'$ between domains $G$ and $G'$ in $\Rn$ with respect to the metrics $v_G$ and $v_{G'}$. For instance, in the case $G=G'=\Bn$ the result is sharp.

Ahlfors-Beurling conformal invariant and relative capacity of compact sets

For a given domain $D$ in the extended complex plane $\bar{\mathbb C}$ with an accessible boundary point $z_0 \in \partial D$ and for a subset $E \subset {D},$ relatively closed w.r.t. $D,$ we define the relative capacity $\rc E$ as a coefficient in the asymptotic expansion of the Ahlfors-Beurling conformal invariant $r(D\setminus E,z)/r(D, z)$ when $z$ approaches the point $z_0.$ Here $r(G,z)$ denotes the inner radius at $z$ of the connected component of the set $G$ containing the point $z.$ The asymptotic behavior of this quotient is established. Further, it is shown that in the case when the domain $D$ is the upper half plane and $z_0=\infty$ the capacity $\rc E$ coincides with the well-known half-plane capacity ${\hc} E.$ Some properties of the relative capacity are proven, including the behavior of this capacity under various forms of symmetrization and under some other geometric transformations. Some applications to bounded holomorphic functions of the unit disk are given.

Computation of exterior moduli of quadrilaterals

We study the problem of computing the exterior modulus of a bounded quadrilateral. We reduce this problem to the numerical solution of the Dirichlet-Neumann problem for the Laplace equation. Several experimental results, with error estimates, are reported. Our main method makes use of an $hp$-FEM algorithm, which enables computations in the case of complicated geometry. For simple geometries, good agreement with computational results based on the SC Toolbox, is observed. We also use the reciprocal error estimation method introduced in our earlier paper to validate our numerical results. In particular, exponential convergence, in accordance with the theory of Babu\vska and Guo, is demonstrated.

Inequalities for the generalized trigonometric and hyperbolic functions

The generalized trigonometric functions occur as an eigenfunction of the Dirichlet problem for the one-dimensional $p-$Laplacian. The generalized hyperbolic functions are defined similarly. Some classical inequalities for trigonometric and hyperbolic functions, such as Mitrinović-Adamović inequality, Lazarević's inequality, Huygens-type inequalities, Wilker-type inequalities, and Cuza-Huygens-type inequalities, are generalized to the case of generalized functions.

Local properties of quasihyperbolic and freely quasiconformal mappings

Suppose that $E$ and $E'$ denote real Banach spaces with dimension at least 2, that $D\subset E$ and $D'\subset E'$ are domains, and that $f: D\to D'$ is a homeomorphism. In this paper, we prove that if there exists some constant $M>1$ (resp. some homeomorphism $ϕ$) such that for all $x\in D$, $f: B(x,d_D(x))\to f(B(x,d_D(x)))$ is $M$-QH (resp. $ϕ$-FQC), then $f$ is $M_1$-QH with $M_1=M_1(M)$ (resp. $ϕ_1$-FQC with $ϕ_1=ϕ_1(ϕ)$). We apply our results to establish, in terms of the $j_D$ metric, a sufficient condition for a homeomorphism to be FQC.

Numerical methods with Sage

Numpy and SciPy are program libraries for the Python scripting language, which apply to a large spectrum of numerical and scientific computing tasks. The Sage project provides a multiplatform software environment which enables one to use, in a unified way, a large number of software components, including Numpy and Scipy, and which has Python as its command language. We review several examples, typical for scientific computation courses, and their solution using these tools in the Sage environment.

On quasimöbius maps in real Banach spaces

Suppose that $E$ and $E'$ denote real Banach spaces with dimension at least 2, that $D\varsubsetneq E$ and $D'\varsubsetneq E'$ are domains, that $f: D\to D'$ is an $(M,C)$-CQH homeomorphism, and that $D$ is uniform. The main aim of this paper is to prove that $D'$ is a uniform domain if and only if $f$ extends to a homeomorphism $\bar{f}: \bar{D}\to \bar{D}'$ and $\bar{f}$ is $η$-QM relative to $\partial D$. This result shows that the answer to one of the open problems raised by Väisälä from 1991 is affirmative.

Subdomain geometry of hyperbolic type metrics

Given a domain $G \subsetneq \Rn$ we study the quasihyperbolic and the distance ratio metrics of $G$ and their connection to the corresponding metrics of a subdomain $D \subset G$. In each case, distances in the subdomain are always larger than in the original domain. Our goal is to show that, in several cases, one can prove a stronger domain monotonicity statement. We also show that under special hypotheses we have inequalities in the opposite direction.

Functional inequalities for modified Bessel functions

In this paper our aim is to show some mean value inequalities for the modified Bessel functions of the first and second kinds. Our proofs are based on some bounds for the logarithmic derivatives of these functions, which are in fact equivalent to the corresponding Turán type inequalities for these functions. As an application of the results concerning the modified Bessel function of the second kind we prove that the cumulative distribution function of the gamma-gamma distribution is log-concave. At the end of this paper several open problems are posed, which may be of interest for further research.

Metrization of weighted graphs

We find a set of necessary and sufficient conditions under which the weight $w:E\to\mathbb R^+$ on the graph $G=(V,E)$ can be extended to a pseudometric $d:V\times V\to\mathbb R^+$. If these conditions hold and $G$ is a connected graph, then the set $\mathfrak M_w$ of all such extensions is nonvoid and the shortest-path pseudometric $d_w$ is the greatest element of $\mathfrak M_w$ with respect to the partial ordering $d_1 \leqslant d_2$ if and only if $d_1(u,v) \leqslant d_2(u,v)$ for all $u,v\in V$. It is shown that every nonvoid poset $(\mathfrak M_w,\leqslant)$ contains the least element $ρ_{0,w}$ if and only if $G$ is a complete $k$-partite graph with $k\geqslant 2$ and in this case the explicit formula for computation of $ρ_{0,w}$ is obtained.

Norm inequalities for vector functions

We study vector functions of ${\mathbb R}^n$ into itself, which are of the form $x \mapsto g(|x|)x\,,$ where $g : (0,\infty) \to (0,\infty) $ is a continuous function and call these radial functions. In the case when $g(t) = t^c$ for some $c \in {\mathbb R}\,,$ we find upper bounds for the distance of image points under such a radial function. Some of our results refine recent results of L. Maligranda and S. Dragomir. In particular, we study quasiconformal mappings of this simple type and obtain norm inequalities for such mappings.

On Mori's theorem for quasiconformal maps in the $n$-space

R. Fehlmann and M. Vuorinen proved in 1988 that Mori's constant $M(n,K)$ for $K$-quasiconformal maps of the unit ball in $\mathbf{R}^n$ onto itself keeping the origin fixed satisfies $M(n,K) \to 1$ when $K\to 1 .$ We give here an alternative proof of this fact, with a quantitative upper bound for the constant in terms of elementary functions. Our proof is based on a refinement of a method due to G.D. Anderson and M. K. Vamanamurthy. We also give an explicit version of the Schwarz lemma for quasiconformal self-maps of the unit disk. Some experimental results are provided to compare the various bounds for the Mori constant when $n=2 .$

Radius of Close-to-convexity of Harmonic Functions

Let ${\mathcal H}$ denote the class of all normalized complex-valued harmonic functions $f=h+\bar{g}$ in the unit disk ${\mathbb D}$, and let $K=H+\bar{G}$ denote the harmonic Koebe function. Let $a_n,b_n, A_n, B_n$ denote the Maclaurin coefficients of $h,g,H,G$, and $${\mathcal F}=\{f=h+\bar{g}\in {\mathcal H}:\,|a_n|\leq A_n and |b_n|\leq B_n for n\geq 1}. $$ We show that the radius of univalence of the family ${\mathcal F}$ is $0.112903...$. We also show that this number is also the radius of the starlikeness of ${\mathcal F}$. Analogous results are proved for a subclass of the class of harmonic convex functions in ${\mathcal H}$. These results are obtained as a consequence of a new coefficient inequality for certain class of harmonic close-to-convex functions. Surprisingly, the new coefficient condition helps to improve Bloch-Landau constant for bounded harmonic mappings.

On moduli of rings and quadrilaterals: algorithms and experiments

Moduli of rings and quadrilaterals are frequently applied in geometric function theory, see e.g. the Handbook by Kühnau. Yet their exact values are known only in a few special cases. Previously, the class of planar domains with polygonal boundary has been studied by many authors from the point of view of numerical computation. We present here a new $hp$-FEM algorithm for the computation of moduli of rings and quadrilaterals and compare its accuracy and performance with previously known methods such as the Schwarz-Christoffel Toolbox of Driscoll and Trefethen. We also demonstrate that the $hp$-FEM algorithm applies to the case of non-polygonal boundary and report results with concrete error bounds.
