Revealing altermagnetic Fermi surfaces with two Kondo impurities

Motivated by recent advances in the study of altermagnetism, or unconventional magnetism, and in the realization and manipulation of two-impurity Kondo physics in real materials, we propose a phase-sensitive method to explore unconventional magnetic symmetries. Our method can be implemented with spin-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy to study two-impurity Kondo phenomena on altermagnetic metals by varying the distance and orientation between magnetic impurities. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we analyze the spin splitting of the Kondo resonance, whose spatial distribution sensitively captures the symmetry of the underlying altermagnetic order. Furthermore, the impurity spin correlations reflects the anisotropy of the RKKY interaction due to the altermagnetic Fermi surface splitting. This work provides a framework for studying the competition between the Kondo effect, the RKKY interaction and altermagnetism, in the simplest possible system.

Thermodynamic and Dynamical Signatures of a Quantum Spin-Hall Insulator to Superconductor Transition

Thermodynamic and dynamical properties of a model of Dirac fermions with a deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) separating an interaction-generated quantum spin-Hall insulator from an s-wave superconductor [Nature Comm.~{\bf 10}, 2658 (2019)] are studied by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Inside the deconfined quantum critical region bound by the single-particle gap, spinons and spinless charge-2e skyrmions emerge. Since the model conserves total spin and charge, and has a single length scale, these excitations lead to a characteristic linear temperature dependence of the uniform spin and charge susceptibilities. At the DQCP, the order parameter dynamic structure factors show remarkable similarities that support emergent Lorentz symmetry. Above a critical temperature, superconductivity is destroyed by the proliferation of spin-1/2 vortices.

A CDMFT study of antiferromagnetic transition in the square-lattice Hubbard model: optical conductivity and electronic structure

We numerically study optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ near the "antiferromagnetic" phase transition in the square-lattice Hubbard model at half filling. We use a cluster dynamical mean field theory and calculate conductivity including vertex corrections, and to this end, we have reformulated the vertex corrections in the antiferromagnetic phase. We find that the vertex corrections change various important details in temperature- and $ω$-dependencies of conductivity in the square lattice, and this contrasts sharply the case of the Mott transition in the frustrated triangular lattice. Generally, the vertex corrections enhance variations in the $ω$-dependence, and sharpen the Drude peak and a high-$ω$ incoherent peak in the paramagnetic phase. They also enhance the dip in $σ(ω)$ at $ω$=0 in the antiferromagnetic phase. Therefore, the dc conductivity is enhanced in the paramagnetic phase and suppressed in the antiferromagnetic phase, but this change occurs slightly below the transition temperature. We also find a temperature region above the transition temperature in which the dc conductivity shows an insulating behavior but $σ(ω)$ retains the Drude peak, and this region is stabilized by the vertex corrections. We also investigate which fluctuations are important in the vertex corrections and analyze momentum dependence of the vertex function in detail.

Spin-orbit-induced exotic insulators in a three-orbital Hubbard model with $(t_{2g})^5$ electrons

On the basis of the multi-orbital dynamical mean field theory, a three-orbital Hubbard model with a relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is studied at five electrons per site. The numerical calculations are performed by employing the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) method based on the strong coupling expansion. We find that appropriately choosing bases, i.e., the maximally spin-orbit-entangled bases, drastically improve the sign problem in the CTQMC calculations, which enables us to treat exactly the full Hund's coupling and pair hopping terms. This improvement is also essential to reach at low temperatures for a large SOC region where the SOC most significantly affects the electronic structure. We show that a metal-insulator transition is induced by the SOC for fixed Coulomb interactions. The insulating state for smaller Coulomb interactions is antiferromagnetically ordered with the local effective total angular momentum $j=1/2$, in which the $j=1/2$ based band is essentially half-filled while the $j=3/2$ based bands are completely occupied. More interestingly, for larger Coulomb interactions, we find that an excitonic insulating state emerges, where the condensation of an electron-hole pair in the $j=1/2$ and $j=3/2$ based bands occurs. The origin of the excitonic insulator as well as the experimental implication is discussed.

Doublon Dynamics of the Hubbard Model on Triangular Lattice

We study the dynamics of doublon in the half-filled Hubbard model on the triangular lattice by using the cellular dynamical mean field theory. Investigating the nearest-neighbor dynamical correlations, we demonstrate that a nearest-neighbor doublon-holon pair shows a strong attraction, in particular in the insulating phase. We also calculate the on-site dynamical correlation of doublon and find that the life time of doublon is longer in the metallic phase than in the insulating phase. In the long-time region, the metallic phase has persistent fluctuations in various nearest-neighbor configurations, while the fluctuations are vanishingly small in the insulating phase. Obtained results indicate clear differences of dynamics of doublon between in the metallic and in the insulating phases.

Transport criticality in triangular lattice Hubbard model

We study electric transport near the Mott metal-insulator transition. Optical conductivity of the half-filled Hubbard model on a triangular lattice is calculated based on a cellular dynamical mean field theory including vertex corrections inside the cluster. By investigating the spectrum at low frequencies, we find that a Drude peak on the metallic side smoothly connects to an "ingap" peak on the insulating side. The optical weight of these peaks exhibits a critical behavior with power-law near the Mott critical end point, $|D-D^*|\propto|U-U^*|^{1/δ}$. We find that the critical exponent $1/δ$ differs from the exponents in the thermodynamics.
