Super-Bloch oscillations with parametric modulation of a parabolic trap

Super-Bloch oscillations are the outcome of a relative phase between Bloch oscillations and modulations of the periodic lattice. We analyze the dynamics for a model system in which such a relative phase is intrinsically present due to the position-dependent force provided by a parabolic trap and therefore an external detuning is not required. The relative phase is not unique and the realized dynamics depends on the initial phase of the modulated parabolic potential. We provide accurate explanations for the different obtained oscillatory transport and spreading regimes by analyzing the spatio-temporal dynamics in real space and by visualizing the relative phase in the k-space dynamics. We also compare our numerical results to an approximate semiclassical analytical expression for the group velocity for a modulated constant force system and find good agreement for coherent oscillations but deviations for oscillations with spreading dynamics which altogether supports the interpretations of our findings.

Microscopic analysis of high harmonic generation in semiconductors with degenerate bands

Based on the multiband semiconductor Bloch equations a microscopic approach to high-harmonic generation in crystalline solids which is able to properly describe degenerate bands and band crossings is presented and analyzed. It is well-known that numerical band structure calculations typically provide electronic wave functions with an undetermined k-dependent phase which results in matrix elements which contain arbitrary k-dependent phases. In addition, such approaches usually mix degenerate bands and bands with an energy difference smaller than the numerical precision in an arbitrary way for each point in k-space. These ambiguities are problematic if one considers the dynamics induced by electric fields since the matrix elements of the position operator involve a derivative of the wave functions with respect to k. When the light-matter interaction is described in the length gauge, the problem of arbitrary phases and degenerate subspace mixing of Bloch states is solved by adopting a smooth gauge transformation along the field direction. The results obtained within this method are validated by comparing with calculations in the velocity gauge. Although we obtain in both gauges the same overall result, the length gauge is advantageous since it converges with a smaller number of bands and thus requires significantly less numerical effort than the velocity gauge. Also an unique distinction between inter- and intraband contributions and thus an instructive physical interpretation is possible in the length gauge whereas in the velocity gauge this is unclear. The computed polarization-direction-dependent high-harmonic spectra agree well with experimental data reported for GaAs. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that, under proper conditions, the Berry curvature is largely responsible for the even-order harmonics which are polarized perpendicular to the driving field.

Enhanced high harmonic generation in semiconductors by the excitation with multi-color pulses

We investigate high-order harmonic generation in ZnO driven by linearly polarized multi-color pulses. It is shown that the intensities of the harmonics in the plateau region can be enhanced by two to three orders of magnitude when driven by two- or three-color fields as compared with the single-color pulse excitation. By analyzing the time-dependent population in the conduction band as function of both the initial and the moving crystal momenta, we demonstrate that this remarkable enhancement originates from the intraband preacceleration of electrons from their initial momenta to the top of the valence band where interband excitation takes place. We show that this preacceleration strongly increases the population in the conduction band and correspondingly the intensities of high harmonics in the plateau region. Our results confirm the very recently proposed four-step model for high harmonic generation in semiconductors [Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 193901 (2019)] and provide an effective way to enhance the intensities of harmonics in the plateau region which has significant implications for the generation of bright attosecond light sources from semiconductors.

Realization of all-optical vortex switching in exciton-polariton condensates

Vortices are topological objects representing the circular motion of a fluid. With their additional degree of freedom, the 'vorticity', they have been widely investigated in many physical systems and different materials for fundamental interest and for applications in data storage and information processing. Vortices have also been observed in non-equilibrium exciton-polariton condensates in planar semiconductor microcavities. There they appear spontaneously or can be created and pinned in space using ring-shaped optical excitation profiles. However, using the vortex state for information processing not only requires creation of a vortex but also efficient control over the vortex after its creation. Here we demonstrate a simple approach to control and switch a localized polariton vortex between opposite states. In our scheme, both the optical control of vorticity and its detection through the orbital angular momentum of the emitted light are implemented in a robust and practical manner.

Multipoles and vortex multiplets in multidimensional media with inhomogeneous defocusing nonlinearity

We predict a variety of composite quiescent and spinning two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) self-trapped modes in media with a repulsive nonlinearity whose local strength grows from center to periphery. These are 2D dipoles and quadrupoles, and 3D octupoles, as well as vortex-antivortex pairs and quadruplets. Unlike other multidimensional models, where such complex bound states either do not exist or are subject to strong instabilities, these modes are remarkably robust in the present setting. The results are obtained by means of numerical methods and analytically, using the Thomas-Fermi approximation. The predicted states may be realized in optical and matter-wave media with controllable cubic nonlinearities.

Nonlinear dynamics of Airy-Vortex 3D wave packets: Emission of vortex light waves

The dynamics of 3D Airy-vortex wave packets is studied under the action of strong self-focusing Kerr nonlinearity. Emissions of nonlinear 3D waves out of the main wave packets with the topological charges were demonstrated. Due to the conservation of the total angular momentum, charges of the emitted waves are equal to those carried by the parental light structure. The rapid collapse imposes a severe limitation on the propagation of multidimensional waves in Kerr media. However, the structure of the Airy beam carrier allows the coupling of light from the leading, most intense peak into neighboring peaks and consequently strongly postpones the collapse. The dependence of the critical input amplitude for the appearance of a fast collapse on the beam width is studied for wave packets with zero and non-zero topological charges. Wave packets carrying angular momentum are found to be much more resistant to the rapid collapse, especially those having small width.

Theory of filtered type-II PDC in the continuous-variable domain: Quantifying the impacts of filtering

Parametric down-conversion (PDC) forms one of the basic building blocks for quantum optical experiments. However, the intrinsic multimode spectral-temporal structure of pulsed PDC often poses a severe hindrance for the direct implementation of the heralding of pure single-photon states or, for example, continuous-variable entanglement distillation experiments. To get rid of multimode effects narrowband frequency filtering is frequently applied to achieve a single-mode behavior. A rigorous theoretical description to accurately describe the effects of filtering on PDC, however, is still missing. To date, the theoretical models of filtered PDC are rooted in the discrete-variable domain and only account for filtering in the low gain regime, where only a few photon pairs are emitted at any single point in time. In this paper we extend these theoretical descriptions and put forward a simple model, which is able to accurately describe the effects of filtering on PDC in the continuous-variable domain. This developed straightforward theoretical framework enables us to accurately quantify the trade-off between suppression of higher-order modes, reduced purity and lowered Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entanglement, when narrowband filters are applied to multimode type-II PDC.

Three-dimensional hybrid vortex solitons

We show, by means of numerical and analytical methods, that media with a repulsive nonlinearity which grows from the center to the periphery support a remarkable variety of previously unknown complex stationary and dynamical three-dimensional solitary-wave states. Peanut-shaped modulation profiles give rise to vertically symmetric and antisymmetric vortex states, and novel stationary hybrid states, built of top and bottom vortices with opposite topological charges, as well as robust dynamical hybrids, which feature stable precession of a vortex on top of a zero-vorticity base. The analysis reveals stability regions for symmetric, antisymmetric, and hybrid states. In addition, bead-shaped modulation profiles give rise to the first example of exact analytical solutions for stable three-dimensional vortex solitons. The predicted states may be realized in media with a controllable cubic nonlinearity, such as Bose-Einstein condensates.

Soliton gyroscopes in media with spatially growing repulsive nonlinearity

We find that the recently introduced model of self-trapping supported by a spatially growing strength of a repulsive nonlinearity gives rise to robust vortex-soliton tori, i.e., three-dimensional vortex solitons, with topological charges S. The family with S=1 is completely stable, while the one with S=2 has alternating regions of stability and instability. The families are nearly exactly reproduced in an analytical form by the Thomas-Fermi approximation (TFA). Unstable states with S=2 and 3 split into persistently rotating pairs or triangles of unitary vortices. Application of a moderate torque to the vortex torus initiates a persistent precession mode, with the torus' axle moving along a conical surface. A strong torque heavily deforms the vortex solitons, but, nonetheless, they restore themselves with the axle oriented according to the vectorial addition of angular momenta.
