Topologically protected vortex knots and links

We propose a class of tangled vortex structures, tied from non-Abelian topological vortices, which are immune against decaying through local reconnections and strand crossings that are allowed by the system. We refer to such structures as being topologically protected. We then turn our attention to topological vortices classified by the quaternion group $Q_8$ ($Q_8$-colored links), which are realizable in systems consisting either of the biaxial nematic or the cyclic phase of a spin-2 Bose--Einstein condensate, or of biaxial nematic liquid crystal, and prove the existence of topologically protected $Q_8$-colored links. Remarkably, the strongest invariant we construct, the $Q$-invariant of $Q_8$-colored links, can be used to classify $Q_8$-colored links up to allowed local surgeries on the vortex cores.

Base independent algebraic cobordism

The purpose of this article is to show that the bivariant algebraic $A$-cobordism groups considered previously by the author are independent of the chosen base ring $A$. This result is proven by analyzing the bivariant ideal generated by the so called snc relations, and, while the alternative characterization we obtain for this ideal is interesting by itself because of its simplicity, perhaps more importantly it allows us to easily extend the definition of bivariant algebraic cobordism to divisorial Noetherian derived schemes of finite Krull dimension. As an interesting corollary, we define the corresponding homology theory called algebraic bordism. We also generalize projective bundle formula, the theory of Chern classes, the Conner--Floyd theorem and the Grothendieck--Riemann--Roch theorem to this setting. The general definitions of bivariant cobordism is based on the careful study of ample line bundles and quasi-projective morphisms of Noetherian derived schemes, also undertaken in this work.

Bivariant algebraic cobordism with bundles

The purpose of this paper is to study an extended version of bivariant derived algebraic cobordism where the cycles carry a vector bundle on the source as additional data. We show that, over a field of characteristic 0, this extends the analogous homological theory of Lee and Pandharipande constructed earlier. We then proceed to study in detail the restricted theory where only rank 1 vector bundles are allowed, and prove a weak version of projective bundle formula for bivariant cobordism. Since the proof of this theorem works very generally, we introduce precobordism theories over arbitrary Noetherian rings of finite Krull dimension as a reasonable class of theories where the proof can be carried out, and prove some of their basic properties. These results can be considered as the first steps towards a Levine-Morel style algebraic cobordism over a base ring that is not a field of characteristic 0.

Precobordism and cobordism

The purpose of this article is to compare several versions of bivariant algebraic cobordism constructed previously by the author and others. In particular, we show that a simple construction based on the universal precobordism theory of Annala--Yokura agrees with the more complicated theory of bivariant derived algebraic cobordism constructed earlier by the author, and that both of these theories admit a Grothendieck transformation to operational cobordism constructed by Luis González--Karu over fields of characteristic 0. The proofs are partly based on convenient universal characterizations of several cobordism theories, which should be of independent interest. Using similar techniques, we also strengthen a result of Vezzosi on operational derived $K$-theory. In the appendix, we give a detailed construction of virtual pullbacks in algebraic bordism, filling the gaps in the construction of Lowrey--Schürg.

On line bundles in derived algebraic geometry

We give examples of derived schemes $X$ and a line bundle $\Ls$ on the truncation $tX$ so that $\Ls$ does not extend to the original derived scheme $X$. In other words the pullback map $\Pic(X) \to \Pic(tX)$ is not surjective. Our examples have the further property that, while their truncations are projective hypersurfaces, they fail to have any nontrivial line bundles, and hence they are not quasi-projective.
