Event-triggered Observability: A Set-membership Perspective

This work attempts to discuss the observability of linear time-invariant systems with event-triggered measurements. A new notion of observability, namely, $ε$-observability is defined with parameter $ε$, which relates to the worst-case performance of inferring the initial state based on not only the received measurement but also the implicit information in the event-triggering conditions at no-event instants. A criterion is developed to test the proposed $ε$-observability of discrete-time linear systems, based on which an iterative event-triggered set-membership observer is designed to evaluate a set containing all possible values of the state. The proposed set-membership observer is designed as the outer approximation of the ellipsoids predicted based on previous state estimates and the ellipsoids inferred by fusing the received measurement and communication conditions, which is optimal in the sense of trace at each step and is proved to be asymptotically bounded. The efficiency of the proposed event-triggered set-membership state observer is verified by numerical experiments.

Destructive nodes in multi-agent controllability

In this paper, several necessary and sufficient graphical conditions are derived for the controllability of multi-agent systems by taking advantage of the proposed concept of controllability destructive nodes. A key step of arriving at this result is the establishment of a relationship between topology structures of the controllability destructive nodes and a specific eigenvector of the Laplacian matrix. The results on double, triple and quadruple controllability destructive nodes constitute a novel approach to study the controllability. In particular, the approach is applied to the graph consisting of five nodes to get a complete graphical characterization of controllability.

Dynamical Analysis of a Networked Control System

A new network data transmission strategy was proposed in Zhang \& Chen [2005] (arXiv:1405.2404), where the resulting nonlinear system was analyzed and the effectiveness of the transmission strategy was demonstrated via simulations. In this paper, we further generalize the results of Zhang \& Chen [2005] in the following ways: 1) Construct first-return maps of the nonlinear systems formulated in Zhang \& Chen [2005] and derive several existence conditions of periodic orbits and study their properties. 2) Formulate the new system as a hybrid system, which will ease the succeeding analysis. 3) Prove that this type of hybrid systems is not structurally stable based on phase transition which can be applied to higher-dimensional cases effortlessly. 4) Simulate a higher-dimensional model with emphasis on their rich dynamics. 5) Study a class of continuous-time hybrid systems as the counterparts of the discrete-time systems discussed above. 6) Propose new controller design methods based on this network data transmission strategy to improve the performance of each individual system and the whole network. We hope that this research and the problems posed here will rouse interests of researchers in such fields as control, dynamical systems and numerical analysis.

Networked control systems: a perspective from chaos

In this paper, a nonlinear system aiming at reducing the signal transmission rate in a networked control system is constructed by adding nonlinear constraints to a linear feedback control system. Its stability is investigated in detail. It turns out that this nonlinear system exhibits very interesting dynamical behaviors: in addition to local stability, its trajectories may converge to a non-origin equilibrium or be periodic or just be oscillatory. Furthermore it exhibits sensitive dependence on initial conditions --- a sign of chaos. Complicated bifurcation phenomena are exhibited by this system. After that, control of the chaotic system is discussed. All these are studied under scalar cases in detail. Some difficulties involved in the study of this type of systems are analyzed. Finally an example is employed to reveal the effectiveness of the scheme in the framework of networked control systems.
