CM values of higher automorphic Green functions for orthogonal groups

Gross and Zagier conjectured that the CM values (of certain Hecke translates) of the automorphic Green function $G_s(z_1,z_2)$ for the elliptic modular group at positive integral spectral parameter $s$ are given by logarithms of algebraic numbers in suitable class fields. We prove a partial average version of this conjecture, where we sum in the first variable $z_1$ over all CM points of a fixed discriminant $d_1$ (twisted by a genus character), and allow in the second variable the evaluation at individual CM points of discriminant $d_2$. This result is deduced from more general statements for automorphic Green functions on Shimura varieties associated with the group $\mathrm{GSpin}(n,2)$. We also use our approach to prove a Gross-Kohnen-Zagier theorem for higher Heegner divisors on Kuga-Sato varieties over modular curves.

Modularity of generating series of divisors on unitary Shimura varieties

We form generating series of special divisors, valued in the Chow group and in the arithmetic Chow group, on the compactified integral model of a Shimura variety associated to a unitary group of signature (n-1,1), and prove their modularity. The main ingredient of the proof is the calculation of the vertical components appearing in the divisor of a Borcherds product on the integral model.

Modularity of generating series of divisors on unitary Shimura varieties II: arithmetic applications

We prove two formulas in the style of the Gross-Zagier theorem, relating derivatives of L-functions to arithmetic intersection pairings on a unitary Shimura variety. We also prove a special case of Colmez's conjecture on the Faltings heights of abelian varieties with complex multiplication. These results are derived from the authors' earlier results on the modularity of generating series of divisors on unitary Shimura varieties.

Heights of Kudla-Rapoport divisors and derivatives of L-functions

We study special cycles on integral models of Shimura varieties associated with unitary similitude groups of signature (n-1,1). We construct an arithmetic theta lift from harmonic Maass forms of weight 2-n to the arithmetic Chow group of the integral model of a unitary Shimura variety, by associating to a harmonic Maass form f a linear combination of Kudla-Rapoport divisors, equipped with the Green function given by the regularized theta lift of f. Our main result is an equality of two complex numbers: (1) the height pairing of the arithmetic theta lift of f against a CM cycle, and (2) the central derivative of the convolution L-function of a weight n cusp form (depending on f) and the theta function of a positive definite hermitian lattice of rank n-1. When specialized to the case n=2, this result can be viewed as a variant of the Gross-Zagier formula for Shimura curves associated to unitary groups of signature (1,1). The proof relies on, among other things, a new method for computing improper arithmetic intersections.

On the pullback of an arithmetic theta function

In this paper, we consider the relation between the simplest types of arithmetic theta series, those associated to the cycles on the moduli space $\Cal C$ of elliptic curves with CM by the ring of integers $\OK$ in an imaginary quadratic field $\kay$, on the one hand, and those associated to cycles on the arithmetic surface $\M$ parametrizing 2-dimensional abelian varieties with an action of the maximal order $O_B$ in an indefinite quaternion algebra $B$ over $\Q$, on the other. We show that the arithmetic degree of the pullback to $Cal C$ of the arithmetic theta function of weight 3/2 valued in $\hat CH^1(\M)$ can be expressed as a linear combination of arithmetic theta functions of weight 1 for $\Cal C$ and unary theta series. This identity can be viewed as an arithmetic seesaw identity. In addition, we show that the arithmetic theta series of weight 1 coincide with the central derivative of certain incoherent Eisenstein series for SL(2)/Q, generalizing earlier joint work with M. Rapoport for the case of a prime discriminant.

An arithmetic intersection formula on Hilbert modular surfaces

In this paper, we obtain an explicit arithmetic intersection formula on a Hilbert modular surface between the diagonal embedding of the modular curve and a CM cycle associated to a non-biquadratic CM quartic field. This confirms a special case of the author's conjecture with J. Bruinier in \cite{BY}, and is a generalization of the beautiful factorization formula of Gross and Zagier on singular moduli. As an application, we proved the first non-trivial non-abelian Chowla-Selberg formula, a special case of Colmez conjecture.

Arithmetic Intersection on a Hilbert Modular Surface and the Faltings Height

In this paper, we prove an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors and arithmetic CM cycles in a Hilbert modular surface over $\mathbb Z$. As applications, we obtain the first `non-abelian' Chowla-Selberg formula, which is a special case of Colmez's conjecture; an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Humbert surfaces and CM cycles in the arithmetic Siegel modular variety of genus two; Lauter's conjecture about the denominators of CM values of Igusa invariants; and a result about bad reductions of CM genus two curves.

CM values of automorphic Green functions on orthogonal groups over totally real fields

Generalizing work of Gross--Zagier and Schofer on singular moduli, we study the CM values of regularized theta lifts of harmonic Whittaker forms. We compute the archimedian part of the height pairing of arithmetic special divisors and CM cycles on Shimura varieties associated to certain quadratic spaces over an arbitrary totally real base field. As a special case, we obtain an explicit formula for the norms of the CM values of those meromorphic modular forms arising as regularized theta lifts of holomorphic Whittaker forms.

Faltings heights of big CM cycles and derivatives of L-functions

We give a formula for the values of automorphic Green functions on the special rational 0-cycles (big CM points) attached to certain maximal tori in the Shimura varieties associated to rational quadratic spaces of signature (2d,2). Our approach depends on the fact that the Green functions in question are constructed as regularized theta lifts of harmonic weak Mass forms, and it involves the Siegel-Weil formula and the central derivatives of incoherent Eisenstein series for totally real fields. In the case of a weakly holomorphic form, the formula is an explicit combination of quantities obtained from the Fourier coefficients of the central derivative of the incoherent Eisenstein series. In the case of a general harmonic weak Maass form, there is an additional term given by the central derivative of a Rankin-Selberg type convolution.

On CM abelian varieties over imaginary quadratic fields

In this paper, we associate canonically to every imaginary quadratic field $K=\Bbb Q(\sqrt{-D})$ one or two isogenous classes of CM abelian varieties over $K$, depending on whether $D$ is odd or even ($D \ne 4$). These abelian varieties are characterized as of smallest dimension and smallest conductor, and such that the abelian varieties themselves descend to $\Bbb Q$. When $D$ is odd or divisible by 8, they are the `canonical' ones first studied by Gross and Rohrlich. We prove that these abelian varieties have the striking property that the vanishing order of their $L$-function at the center is dictated by the root number of the associated Hecke character. We also prove that the smallest dimension of a CM abelian variety over $K$ is exactly the ideal class number of $K$ and classify when a CM abelian variety over $K$ has the smallest dimension.
