CM values of higher automorphic Green functions for orthogonal groups

Gross and Zagier conjectured that the CM values (of certain Hecke translates) of the automorphic Green function $G_s(z_1,z_2)$ for the elliptic modular group at positive integral spectral parameter $s$ are given by logarithms of algebraic numbers in suitable class fields. We prove a partial average version of this conjecture, where we sum in the first variable $z_1$ over all CM points of a fixed discriminant $d_1$ (twisted by a genus character), and allow in the second variable the evaluation at individual CM points of discriminant $d_2$. This result is deduced from more general statements for automorphic Green functions on Shimura varieties associated with the group $\mathrm{GSpin}(n,2)$. We also use our approach to prove a Gross-Kohnen-Zagier theorem for higher Heegner divisors on Kuga-Sato varieties over modular curves.

A converse theorem for Borcherds products on $X_0(N)$

We show that every Fricke invariant meromorphic modular form for $Γ_0(N)$ whose divisor on $X_0(N)$ is defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ and supported on Heegner divisors and the cusps is a generalized Borcherds product associated to a harmonic Maass form of weight $1/2$. Further, we derive a criterion for the finiteness of the multiplier systems of generalized Borcherds products in terms of the vanishing of the central derivatives of $L$-function of certain weight $2$ newforms. We also prove similar results for twisted Borcherds products.

Algebraic formulas for the coefficients of mock theta functions and Weyl vectors of Borcherds products

We present some applications of the Kudla-Millson and the Millson theta lift. The two lifts map weakly holomorphic modular functions to vector valued harmonic Maass forms of weight $3/2$ and $1/2$, respectively. We give finite algebraic formulas for the coefficients of Ramanujan's mock theta functions $f(q)$ and $ω(q)$ in terms of traces of CM-values of a weakly holomorphic modular function. Further, we construct vector valued harmonic Maass forms whose shadows are unary theta functions, and whose holomorphic parts have rational coefficients. This yields a rationality result for the coefficients of mock theta functions, i.e., harmonic Maass forms whose shadows lie in the space of unary theta functions. Moreover, the harmonic Maass forms we construct can be used to evaluate the Petersson inner products of unary theta functions with harmonic Maass forms, giving formulas and rationality results for the Weyl vectors of Borcherds products.

Lattices with many Borcherds products

We prove that there are only finitely many isometry classes of even lattices $L$ of signature $(2,n)$ for which the space of cusp forms of weight $1+n/2$ for the Weil representation of the discriminant group of $L$ is trivial. We compute the list of these lattices. They have the property that every Heegner divisor for the orthogonal group of $L$ can be realized as the divisor of a Borcherds product. We obtain similar classification results in greater generality for finite quadratic modules.

Heights of Kudla-Rapoport divisors and derivatives of L-functions

We study special cycles on integral models of Shimura varieties associated with unitary similitude groups of signature (n-1,1). We construct an arithmetic theta lift from harmonic Maass forms of weight 2-n to the arithmetic Chow group of the integral model of a unitary Shimura variety, by associating to a harmonic Maass form f a linear combination of Kudla-Rapoport divisors, equipped with the Green function given by the regularized theta lift of f. Our main result is an equality of two complex numbers: (1) the height pairing of the arithmetic theta lift of f against a CM cycle, and (2) the central derivative of the convolution L-function of a weight n cusp form (depending on f) and the theta function of a positive definite hermitian lattice of rank n-1. When specialized to the case n=2, this result can be viewed as a variant of the Gross-Zagier formula for Shimura curves associated to unitary groups of signature (1,1). The proof relies on, among other things, a new method for computing improper arithmetic intersections.

Vector valued formal Fourier-Jacobi series

H. Aoki showed that any symmetric formal Fourier-Jacobi series for the symplectic group Sp_2(Z) is the Fourier-Jacobi expansion of a holomorphic Siegel modular form. We prove an analogous result for vector valued symmetric formal Fourier-Jacobi series, by combining Aoki's theorem with facts about vector valued modular forms. Recently, this result was also proved independently by M. Raum using a different approach. As an application, by means of work of W. Zhang, modularity results for special cycles of codimension 2 on Shimura varieties associated to orthogonal groups can be derived.

On the converse theorem for Borcherds products

We prove a new converse theorem for Borcherds' multiplicative theta lift which improves the previously known results. To this end we develop a newform theory for vector valued modular forms for the Weil representation, which might be of independent interest. We also derive lower bounds for the ranks of the Picard groups and the spaces of holomorphic top degree differential forms of modular varieties associated to orthogonal groups.

Algebraic formulas for the coefficients of half-integral weight harmonic weak Maass forms

We prove that the coefficients of certain weight -1/2 harmonic Maass forms are traces of singular moduli for weak Maass forms. To prove this theorem, we construct a theta lift from spaces of weight -2 harmonic weak Maass forms to spaces of weight -1/2 vector-valued harmonic weak Maass forms on Mp_2(Z), a result which is of independent interest. We then prove a general theorem which guarantees (with bounded denominator) when such Maass singular moduli are algebraic. As an example of these results, we derive a formula for the partition function p(n) as a finite sum of algebraic numbers which lie in the usual discriminant -24n+1 ring class field. We indicate how these results extend to general weights. In particular, we illustrate how one can compute theta lifts for general weights by making use of the Kudla-Millson kernel and Maass differential operators.

Regularized theta lifts for orthogonal groups over totally real fields

We define a regularized theta lift from SL_2 to orthogonal groups over totally real fields. It takes harmonic `Whittaker forms' to automorphic Green functions and weakly holomorphic Whittaker forms to meromorphic modular forms on orthogonal groups with zeros and poles supported on special divisors, generalizing Borcherds' work on automorphic products. To prove our results we use the spectral expansion of the lift and study its relationship with the cohomological theta lift of Kudla and Millson.

Faltings heights of big CM cycles and derivatives of L-functions

We give a formula for the values of automorphic Green functions on the special rational 0-cycles (big CM points) attached to certain maximal tori in the Shimura varieties associated to rational quadratic spaces of signature (2d,2). Our approach depends on the fact that the Green functions in question are constructed as regularized theta lifts of harmonic weak Mass forms, and it involves the Siegel-Weil formula and the central derivatives of incoherent Eisenstein series for totally real fields. In the case of a weakly holomorphic form, the formula is an explicit combination of quantities obtained from the Fourier coefficients of the central derivative of the incoherent Eisenstein series. In the case of a general harmonic weak Maass form, there is an additional term given by the central derivative of a Rankin-Selberg type convolution.
