Magnetic Excitations and Interactions in the Kitaev Hyperhoneycomb Iridate ββ-Li2_2IrO3_3

We present a thorough experimental study of the three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet ββ-Li2_2IrO3_3, using a combination of inelastic neutron scattering (INS), time-domain THz spectroscopy, and heat capacity measurements. The main results include a massive low-temperature reorganization of the INS spectral weight that evolves into a broad peak centered around 12 meV, and a distinctive peak in the THz data at 2.8(1) meV. A detailed comparison to powder-averaged spin-wave theory calculations reveals that the positions of these two features are controlled by the anisotropic ΓΓ coupling and the Heisenberg exchange JJ, respectively. The refined microscopic spin model places ββ-Li2_2IrO3_3 in close proximity to the Kitaev spin liquid phase.

Discovery of Superconductivity in (Ba,K)SbO3_{3}

Superconducting bismuthates (Ba,K)BiO3_{3} (BKBO) constitute an interesting class of superconductors in that superconductivity with a remarkably high TcT_\mathrm{c} of 30 K arises in proximity to charge density wave (CDW) order. Prior understanding on the driving mechanism of the CDW and superconductivity emphasizes the role of either bismuth (negative UU model) or oxygen ions (ligand hole model). While holes in BKBO presumably reside on oxygen owing to their negative charge transfer energy, so far there has been no other comparative material studied. Here, we introduce (Ba,K)SbO3_{3} (BKSO) in which the Sb 5ss orbital energy is higher than that of the Bi 6ss orbitals enabling tuning of the charge transfer energy from negative to slightly positive. The parent compound BaSbO3−δ_{3-δ} shows a larger CDW gap compared to the undoped bismuthate BaBiO3_{3}. As the CDW order is suppressed via potassium substitution up to 65 %, superconductivity emerges, rising up to TcT_\mathrm{c} = 15 K. This value is lower than the maximum TcT_\mathrm{c} of BKBO, but higher by more than a factor of two at comparable potassium concentrations. The discovery of an enhanced CDW gap and superconductivity in BKSO indicates that the sign of the charge transfer energy may not be crucial, but instead strong metal-oxygen covalency plays the essential role in constituting a CDW and high-TcT_\mathrm{c} superconductivity in the main-group perovskite oxides.

Lattice dynamics and structural transition of the hyperhoneycomb iridate ββ-Li2_2IrO3_3 investigated by high-pressure Raman scattering

We report a polarized Raman scattering study of the lattice dynamics of ββ-Li2_2IrO3_3 under hydrostatic pressures up to 7.62 GPa. At ambient pressure, ββ-Li2_2IrO3_3 exhibits the hyperhoneycomb crystal structure and a magnetically ordered state of spin-orbit entangled Jeff = 1/2 moments that is strongly influenced by bond-directional (Kitaev) exchange interactions. At a critical pressure of ~ 4.1 GPa, the phonon spectrum changes abruptly consistent with the reported structural transition into a monoclinic, dimerized phase. A comparison to the phonon spectra obtained from density functional calculations shows reasonable overall agreement. The calculations also indicate that the high-pressure phase is a nonmagnetic insulator driven by the formation of Ir-Ir dimer bonds. Our results thus indicate a strong sensitivity of the electronic properties of ββ-Li2_2IrO3_3 to the pressure-induced structural transition.

Phononic soft mode and strong electronic background behavior across the structural phase transition in the excitonic insulator Ta2_2NiSe5_5 (with Erratum)

Ta2_2NiSe5_5 became one of the most investigated candidate materials for hosting an excitonic insulator ground state. Many studies describe the corresponding phase transition as a condensation of excitons breaking a continuous symmetry. This view got challenged recently pointing out the importance of the loss of two mirror symmetries at a structural phase transition that occurs together with the semiconductor-excitonic insulator transition. For such a scenario an unstable optical zone-center phonon at low energy is proposed to drive the transition. Here we report on the experimental observation of such a soft mode behavior using Raman spectroscopy. In addition we find a novel spectral feature, likely of electronic or joint electronic and phononic origin, that is clearly distinct from the lattice dynamics and that becomes dominant at Tc. This suggests a picture of joint structural and electronic order driving the phase transition.

The spontaneous symmetry breaking in Ta2_2NiSe5_5 is structural in nature

The excitonic insulator is an electronically-driven phase of matter that emerges upon the spontaneous formation and Bose condensation of excitons. Detecting this exotic order in candidate materials is a subject of paramount importance, as the size of the excitonic gap in the band structure establishes the potential of this collective state for superfluid energy transport. However, the identification of this phase in real solids is hindered by the coexistence of a structural order parameter with the same symmetry as the excitonic order. Only a few materials are currently believed to host a dominant excitonic phase, Ta2_2NiSe5_5 being the most promising. Here, we test this scenario by using an ultrashort laser pulse to quench the broken-symmetry phase of this transition metal chalcogenide. Tracking the dynamics of the material's electronic and crystal structure after light excitation reveals surprising spectroscopic fingerprints that are only compatible with a primary order parameter of phononic nature. We rationalize our findings through state-of-the-art calculations, confirming that the structural order accounts for most of the electronic gap opening. Not only do our results uncover the long-sought mechanism driving the phase transition of Ta2_2NiSe5_5, but they also conclusively rule out any substantial excitonic character in this instability.

Kitaev quantum spin liquid - concept and materialization

A decade ago, Alexei Kitaev proposed an exactly solvable SS = 1/2 model on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice, where the spins fractionalize into Majorana fermions and form a topological quantum spin liquid (QSL) in the ground state. It was soon recognized that a family of complex iridium oxides, as well as ruthenium chloride, with honeycomb structure are magnetic insulators and accommodate essential ingredients of the Kitaev model, due to the interplay of electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling. This initiated a race to materialize the Kitaev QSL and to capture the signature of Majorana fermions. In this review, we provide a wide perspective of this rapidly growing field, including theory, materials and experiment. We first summarize the theoretical background of the Kitaev QSL ground state and its materialization using spin-orbital-entangled JeffJ_{\rm eff} = 1/2 moments. This is followed by an overview of candidate materials and their magnetic properties, including Na2_2IrO3_3, αα, ββ, γγ-Li2_2IrO3_3,αα-RuCl3_3 and H3_3LiIr2_2O6_6. Finally, we review the latest exciting progress in the search for the Kitaev QSL. In particular, H3_3LiIr2_2O6_6 and αα-RuCl3_3 in applied magnetic field show signatures of the QSL state, and αα-RuCl3_3 has unusual magnetic excitations and thermal transport properties that are consistent with spin fractionalization.

Model analysis of magnetic susceptibility of Sr2_2IrO4_4 - 2D JeffJ_{\rm eff} = 1/2 Heisenberg system with competing interlayer couplings

We report the analysis of magnetic susceptibility χχ(TT) of Sr2_2IrO4_4 single crystal in the paramagnetic phase. We formulate the theoretical susceptibility based on isotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnetism incorporating the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction exactly, and include the interlayer couplings in a mean-field approximation. χχ(TT) above TNT_{\rm N} was found to be well described by the model, indicating the predominant Heisenberg exchange consistent with the microscopic theory. The analysis points to a competition of nearest and next-nearest neighbor interlayer couplings, which results in the up-up-down-down configuration of the in-plane canting moments identified by the diffraction experiments.

Pseudospin heat conductivity in the Jeff=1/2J_\mathrm{eff} = 1/2 antiferromagnet Sr2_2IrO4_4

We report the in-plane and out-of-plane heat conductivity of the antiferromagnetic spin-orbit induced Mott insulator Sr2_2IrO4_4 with Jeff=1/2J_\mathrm{eff} = 1/2. Our data reveal clear-cut evidence for magnetic heat transport within the IrO2_2 planes which provides the unique possibility to analyze the thermal occupation and scattering of Jeff=1/2J_\mathrm{eff} = 1/2 pseudospin excitations. The analysis of the magnetic heat conductivity yields a low-temperature (T≲75T \lesssim 75 K) magnetic mean free path lmag∼32l_\mathrm{mag} \sim 32 nm, consistent with boundary scattering. Upon heating towards room temperature, the mean free path strongly decreases by one order of magnitude due to thermally activated scattering of the pseudospin excitations. The latter reveals that the coupling of these excitations to the lattice is radically different from that of S=1/2S = 1/2-excitations in cuprate analogs.

Crossover from coherent to incoherent scattering in spin-orbit dominated Sr2IrO4

Strong spin-orbit interaction in the two dimensional compound Sr2IrO4 leads to the formation of Jeff=1/2 isospins with unprecedented dynamics. In Raman scattering a continuum attributed to double spin scattering is observed. With higher excitation energy of the incident Laser this signal crosses over to an incoherent background. The characteristic energy scale of this cross over is identical to that of intensity resonance effects in phonon scattering. It is related to exciton-like orbital excitations that are also evident in resonant X-Ray scattering. The crossover and evolution of incoherent excitations are proposed to be due to their coupling to spin excitations. This signals a spin-orbit induced entanglement of spin, lattice and charge degrees of freedoms in Sr2IrO4.
