Tilings of the Hyperbolic Space and Lipschitz Functions

We use a special tiling for the hyperbolic dd-space Hd\mathbb{H}^d for d=2,3,4d=2,3,4 to construct an (almost) explicit isomorphism between the Lipschitz-free space F(Hd)\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{H}^d) and F(P)⊕F(N)\mathcal{F}(P)\oplus\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{N}) where PP is a polytope in Rd\mathbb{R}^d and N\mathcal{N} a net in Hd\mathbb{H}^d coming from the tiling. This implies that the spaces F(Hd)\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{H}^d) and F(Rd)⊕F(M)\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{R}^{d})\oplus \mathcal{F}(\mathcal{M}) are isomorphic for every net M\mathcal{M} in Hd\mathbb{H}^d. In particular, we obtain that, for d=2,3,4d=2,3,4, F(Hd)\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{H}^d) has a Schauder basis. Moreover, using a similar method, we also give an explicit isomorphism between Lip(Hd)\mathrm{Lip}(\mathbb{H}^{d}) and Lip(Rd)\mathrm{Lip}(\mathbb{R}^d).

Projecting Lipschitz functions onto spaces of polynomials

The Banach space P(2X)\mathcal{P}({}^2X) of 22-homogeneous polynomials on the Banach space XX can be naturally embedded in the Banach space Lip0(BX){{\rm Lip}_0}(B_X) of real-valued Lipschitz functions on BXB_X that vanish at 00. We investigate whether P(2X)\mathcal{P}({}^2X) is a complemented subspace of Lip0(BX){{\rm Lip}_0}(B_X). This line of research can be considered as a polynomial counterpart to a classical result by Joram Lindenstrauss, asserting that P(1X)=X∗\mathcal{P}({}^1X)=X^* is complemented in Lip0(BX){{\rm Lip}_0}(B_X) for every Banach space XX. Our main result asserts that P(2X)\mathcal{P}({}^2X) is not complemented in Lip0(BX){{\rm Lip}_0}(B_X) for every Banach space XX with non-trivial type.

Weakly Corson compact trees

We introduce and study a new topology on trees, that we call the countably coarse wedge topology. Such a topology is strictly finer than the coarse wedge topology and it turns every chain complete, rooted tree into a Fréchet--Urysohn, countably compact topological space. We show the rôle of such topology in the theory of weakly Corson and weakly Valdivia compacta. In particular, we give the first example of a compact space TT whose every closed subspace is weakly Valdivia, yet TT is not weakly Corson. This answers a question due to Ondřej Kalenda.

On densely isomorphic normed spaces

In the first part of our note we prove that every Weakly Lindelöf Determined (WLD) (in particular, every reflexive) non-separable Banach XX space contains two dense linear subspaces YY and ZZ that are not densely isomorphic. This means that there are no further dense linear subspaces Y0Y_0 and Z0Z_0 of YY and ZZ which are linearly isomorphic. Our main result (Theorem B) concerns the existence of biorthogonal systems in normed spaces. In particular, we prove under the Continuum Hypothesis (CH) that there exists a dense linear subspace of ℓ2(ω1)\ell_2(ω_1) (or more generally every WLD space of density ω1ω_1) which contains no uncountable biorthogonal system. This result lies between two fundamental results concerning biorthogonal systems, namely the construction of Kunen (under CH) of a non-separable Banach space which contains no uncountable biorthogonal system, and the construction of Todorucević (under Martin Maximum) of an uncountable biorthogonal system in every non-separable Banach space.

Separated sets and Auerbach systems in Banach spaces

The paper elucidates the relationship between the density of a Banach space and possible sizes of well-separated subsets of its unit sphere. For example, it is proved that for a large enough space XX, the unit sphere SXS_X always contains an uncountable (1+)(1+)-separated subset. In order to achieve this, new results concerning the existence of large Auerbach systems are established that happen to be sharp for the class of WLD spaces. In fact, we offer the first consistent example of a non-separable WLD Banach space that contains no uncountable Auerbach system, as witnessed by a renorming of c0(ω1)c_0(ω_1). Moreover, the following optimal results for the classes of, respectively, reflexive and super-reflexive spaces are established: the unit sphere of an infinite-dimensional reflexive space contains a symmetrically (1+ε)(1+\varepsilon)-separated subset of any regular cardinality not exceeding the density of XX; should the space XX be super-reflexive, the unit sphere of XX contains such a subset of cardinality equal to the density of XX. The said problem is studied for other classes of spaces too, including the RNP spaces or strictly convex ones.

Smooth norms in dense subspaces of Banach spaces

In the first part of our paper, we show that ℓ∞\ell_\infty has a dense linear subspace which admits an equivalent real analytic norm. As a corollary, every separable Banach space, as well as ℓ1(c)\ell_1(\mathfrak{c}), also has a dense linear subspace which admits an analytic renorming. By contrast, no dense subspace of c0(ω1)c_0(ω_1) admits an analytic norm. In the second part, we prove (solving in particular an open problem of Guirao, Montesinos, and Zizler) that every Banach space with a long unconditional Schauder basis contains a dense subspace that admits a C∞C^{\infty}-smooth norm. Finally, we prove that there is a proper dense subspace of ℓ∞c(ω1)\ell_{\infty}^{c}(ω_1) that admits no Gâteaux smooth norm. (Here, ℓ∞c(ω1)\ell_{\infty}^{c} (ω_1) denotes the Banach space of real-valued, bounded, and countably supported functions on ω1ω_1.)

Symmetrically separated sequences in the unit sphere of a Banach space

We prove the symmetric version of Kottman's theorem, that is to say, we demonstrate that the unit sphere of an infinite-dimensional Banach space contains an infinite subset AA with the property that ∥x±y∥>1\|x\pm y\| > 1 for distinct elements x,y∈Ax,y\in A, thereby answering a question of J. M. F. Castillo. In the case where XX contains an infinite-dimensional separable dual space or an unconditional basic sequence, the set AA may be chosen in a way that ∥x±y∥⩾1+ε\|x\pm y\| \geqslant 1+\varepsilon for some ε>0\varepsilon > 0 and distinct x,y∈Ax,y\in A. Under additional structural properties of XX, such as non-trivial cotype, we obtain quantitative estimates for the said ε\varepsilon. Certain renorming results are also presented.

A note on symmetric separation in Banach spaces

We present some new results on the symmetric Kottman's constant Ks(X)K^s(X) of a Banach space XX and its relationship with the Kottman constant. We show that Ks(X)>1K^s(X)>1, for every infinite-dimensional Banach space, thereby solving a problem by J.M.F. Castillo and P.L. Papini. We also investigate such constant in the class of Banach spaces admitting c0c_0 spreading models, answering in particular one question from our previous joint paper with P. Hájek and T. Kania.
