Transition to hyperchaos: Sudden expansion of attractor and intermittent large-amplitude events in dynamical systems

Hyperchaos is distinguished from chaos by the presence of at least two positive Lyapunov exponents instead of just one in dynamical systems. A general scenario is presented here that shows emergence of hyperchaos with a sudden large expansion of the attractor of continuous dynamical systems at a critical parameter when the temporal dynamics shows intermittent large-amplitude spiking or bursting events. The distribution of local maxima of the temporal dynamics is non-Gaussian with a tail, confirming a rare occurrence of the large-amplitude events. We exemplify our results on the sudden emergence of hyperchaos in three paradigmatic models, namely, a coupled Hindmarsh-Rose model, three coupled Duffing oscillators, and a hyperchaotic model.

A novel, Fourier series based method of control optimization and its application to a discontinuous capsule drive model

This paper presents a novel, Fourier series based numerical method of open-loop control optimization. Due to its flexible assumptions, it can be applied in a large variety of systems, including discontinuous ones or even so-called black boxes, whose equations are not fully known. This aspect is particularly important in mechanical systems, where friction or impact induced discontinuities are common. The paper includes a mathematical background of the new method, a detailed discussion of the algorithm and a numerical example, in which control function of a discontinuous capsule drive is optimized. It is expected that the proposed method can facilitate research in all areas where control of non-smooth, discontinuous or black box systems is crucial. In particular, authors hope that the presented algorithm is going to be used for control optimization of other capsule drives.

Routes to extreme events in dynamical systems: Dynamical and Statistical Characteristics

Intermittent large amplitude events are seen in the temporal evolution of a state variable of many dynamical systems. Such intermittent large events suddenly start appearing in dynamical systems at a critical value of a system parameter and continues for a range of parameter values. Three important processes of instabilities, namely, interior crisis, Pomeau-Manneville intermittency and the breakdown of quasiperiodic motion, are most common as observed in many systems that lead to such occasional and rare transitions to large amplitude spiking events. We characterize these occasional large events as extreme events if they are larger than a statistically defined significant height. We present two exemplary systems, a single system and a coupled system to illustrate how the instabilities work to originate as extreme events and they manifest as non-trivial dynamical events. We illustrate the dynamical and statistical properties of such events.

Extreme events in a network of heterogeneous Josephson junctions

We report rare and recurrent large spiking events in a heterogeneous network of superconducting Josephson junctions (JJ) connected through a resistive load and driven by a radio-frequency (rf) current in addition to a constant bias. The intermittent large spiking events show characteristic features of extreme events (EE) since they are larger than a statistically defined significant height. Under the influence of repulsive interactions and an impact of heterogeneity of damping parameters, the network splits into three sub-groups of junctions, one in incoherent rotational, another in coherent librational motion and a third sub-group originating EE. We are able to scan the whole population of junctions with their distinctive individual dynamical features either in EE mode or non-EE mode in parameter space. EE migrates spatially from one to another sub-group of junctions depending upon the repulsive strength and the damping parameter. For a weak repulsive coupling, all the junctions originate frequent large spiking events, in rotational motion when the average inter-spike-interval (ISI) is small, but it increases exponentially with repulsive interaction; it largely deviates from its exponential growth at a break point where EE triggers in a sub-group of junctions. The probability density of inter-event-intervals (IEI) in the subgroup exhibits a Poisson distribution. EE originates via bubbling instability of in-phase synchronization.

Perpetual points and periodic perpetual loci in maps

We introduce the concepts of perpetual points and periodic perpetual loci in discrete--time systems (maps). The occurrence and analysis of these points/loci are shown and basic examples are considered. We discuss the potential usage and properties of introduced concepts. The comparison of perpetual points and loci in discrete--time and continuous--time systems is presented. Discussed methods can be widely applied in other dynamical systems.

Analysis of transition between different ringing schemes of the church bell

In this paper we investigate dynamics of church bells, characterize their most common working regimes and investigate how to obtain them. To simulate the behavior of the yoke-bell-clapper system we use experimentally validated hybrid dynamical model developed basing on the detailed measurements of the biggest bell in the Cathedral Basilica of St Stanislaus Kostka, Lodz, Poland. We introduce two parameters that describes the yoke design and the propulsion mechanism and analyze their influence on the systems' dynamics. We develop two-parameter diagrams that allow to asses conditions that ensures proper and smooth operation of the bell. Similar charts can be calculated for any existing or non-existing bell and used when designing its mounting and propulsion. Moreover, we propose simple and universal launching procedure that allows to decrease the time that is needed to reach given attractor. Presented results are robust and indicate methods to increase the chance that the instrument will operate properly and reliably regardless of changes in working conditions.

Synchronization of two self-excited double pendula

We consider the synchronization of two self-excited double pendula. We show that such pendula hanging on the same beam can have four different synchronous configurations. Our approximate analytical analysis allows us to derive the synchronization conditions and explain the observed types of synchronization. We consider an energy balance in the system and describe how the energy is transferred between the pendula via the oscillating beam, allowing thus the pendula synchronization. Changes and stability ranges of the obtained solutions with increasing and decreasing masses of the pendula are shown using path-following.

The dynamics of co- and counter rotating coupled spherical pendulums

The dynamics of co- and counter-rotating coupled spherical pendulums (two lower pendulums are mounted at the end of the upper pendulum) is considered. Linear mode analysis shows the existence of three rotating modes. Starting from linear modes allow we calculate the nonlinear normal modes, which are and present them in frequency-energy plots. With the increase of energy in one mode we observe a symmetry breaking pitchfork bifurcation. In the second part of the paper we consider energy transfer between pendulums having different energies. The results for co-rotating (all pendulums rotate in the same direction) and counter-rotating motion (one of lower pendulums rotates in the opposite direction) are presented. In general, the energy fluctuations in counter-rotating pendulums are found to be higher than in the co-rotating case.

Synchronous motion of two vertically excited planar elastic pendula

The dynamics of two planar elastic pendula mounted on the horizontally excited platform have been studied. We give evidence that the pendula can exhibit synchronous oscillatory and rotation motion and show that stable in-phase and anti-phase synchronous states always co-exist. The complete bifurcational scenario leading from synchronous to asynchronous motion is shown. We argue that our results are robust as they exist in the wide range of the system parameters.

The dynamics of the pendulum suspended on the forced Duffing oscillator

We investigate the dynamics of the pendulum suspended on the forced Duffing oscillator. The detailed bifurcation analysis in two parameter space (amplitude and frequency of excitation) which presents both oscillating and rotating periodic solutions of the pendulum has been performed. We identify the areas with low number of coexisting attractors in the parameter space as the coexistence of different attractors has a significant impact on the practical usage of the proposed system as a tuned mass absorber.

Riddling and chaotic synchronization of coupled piecewise-linear Lorenz maps

We investigate the parametric evolution of riddled basins related to synchronization of chaos in two coupled piecewise-linear Lorenz maps. Riddling means that the basin of the synchronized attractor is shown to be riddled with holes belonging to another basin in an arbitrarily fine scale, which has serious consequences on the predictability of the final state for such a coupled system. We found that there are wide parameter intervals for which two piecewise-linear Lorenz maps exhibit riddled basins (globally or locally), which indicates that there are riddled basins in coupled Lorenz equations, as previously suggested by numerical experiments. The use of piecewise-linear maps makes it possible to prove rigorously the mathematical requirements for the existence of riddled basins.
