The first law of black hole mechanics in the Einstein-Maxwell theory revisited

We re-derive the first law of black hole mechanics in the context of the Einstein-Maxwell theory in a gauge-invariant way introducing "momentum maps" associated to field strengths and the vectors that generate their symmetries. These objects play the role of generalized thermodynamical potentials in the first law and satisfy generalized zeroth laws, as first observed in the context of principal gauge bundles by Prabhu, but they can be generalized to more complex situations. We test our ideas on the $d$-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-Tangherlini black hole.

On the extremality bound of stringy black holes

A mild version of the weak gravity conjecture (WGC) states that extremal black holes have charge-to-mass ratio larger or equal than one when higher-curvature interactions are taken into account. Since these corrections become more relevant in the low-mass regime, this would allow the decay of extremal black holes in terms of energy and charge conservation. Evidence in this direction has been mainly given in the context of corrections to Einstein-Maxwell theory. Here we compute corrections to the charge-to-mass ratio of some dyonic extremal black holes explicitly embedded in the heterotic string effective theory. We find that modifications of the extremality bound depend on the solution considered, with the charge-to-mass ratio remaining unchanged or deviating positively from one. Additionally, we observe that the introduction of the higher-curvature terms increases the Wald entropy in all cases considered, whose variation does not seem to be correlated with the charge-to-mass ratio, contrary to the situation in Einstein-Maxwell theory.

A non-Abelian Black Ring

We construct a supersymmetric black ring solution of SU(2) N=1, d=5 Super-Einstein-Yang-Mills (SEYM) theory by adding a distorted BPST instanton to an Abelian black ring solution of the same theory. The change cannot be observed from spatial infinity: neither the mass, nor the angular momenta or the values of the scalars at infinity differ from those of the Abelian ring. The entropy is, however, sensitive to the presence of the non-Abelian instanton, and it is smaller than that of the Abelian ring, in analogy to what happens in the supersymmetric coloured black holes recently constructed in the same theory and in N=2, d=4 SEYM. By taking the limit in which the two angular momenta become equal we derive a non-Abelian generalization of the BMPV rotating black-hole solution.

On 2-dimensional Kaehler metrics with one holomorphic isometry

We show how to write any Kaehler metric of complex dimension 2 admitting a holomorphic isometry as a simple 1-real-function deformation of a Gibbons-Hawking metric. Hyper-Kaehler metrics with a tri-holomorphic isometry (Gibbons-Hawking metrics) or with a mono-holomorphic isometry are recovered for particular values of the additional function. The new general metric can be used as an Ansatz in several interesting physical problems.

On the dualization of scalars into (d-2)-forms in supergravity. Momentum maps, R-symmetry and gauged supergravity

We review and investigate different aspects of scalar fields in supergravity theories both when they parametrize symmetric spaces and when they parametrize spaces of special holonomy which are not necessarily symmetric (Kahler and Quaternionic-Kahler spaces): their role in the definition of derivatives of the fermions covariant under the R-symmetry group and (in gauged supergravities) under some gauge group, their dualization into (d-2)-forms, their role in the supersymmetry transformation rules (via fermion shifts, for instance) etc. We find a general definition of momentum map that applies to any manifold admitting a Killing vector and coincides with those of the holomorphic and tri-holomorphic momentum maps in Kahler and Quaternionic-Kahler spaces and with an independent definition that can be given in symmetric spaces. We show how the momentum map occurs ubiquitously: in gauge-covariant derivatives of fermions, in fermion shifts, in the supersymmetry transformation rules of (d-2)-forms etc. We also give the general structure of the Noether-Gaillard-Zumino conserved currents in theories with fields of different ranks in any dimension.

Non-Abelian, supersymmetric black holes and strings in 5 dimensions

We construct and study the first supersymmetric black-hole and black-string solutions of non-Abelian-gauged N=1,d=5 supergravity (N=1,d=5 Super-Einstein-Yang-Mills theory) with non-trivial SU(2) gauge fields: BPST instantons for black holes and BPS monopoles of different kinds ('t~Hooft-Polyakov, Wu-Yang and Protogenov) for black strings and also for certain black holes that are well defined solutions only for very specific values of all the moduli. Instantons, as well as colored monopoles do not contribute to the masses and tensions but do contribute to the entropies. The construction is based on the characterization of the supersymmetric solutions of gauged N=1,d=5 supergravity coupled to vector multiplets achieved in Ref. Bellorin:2007yp which we elaborate upon by finding the rules to construct supersymmetric solutions with one additional isometry, both for the timelike and null classes. These rules automatically connect the timelike and null non-Abelian supersymmetric solutions of N=1,d=5 SEYM theory with the timelike ones of N=2,d=4 SEYM theory by dimensional reduction and oxidation. In the timelike-to-timelike case the singular Kronheimer reduction recently studied in Ref. Bueno:2015wva plays a crucial role.

Non-extremal branes

We prove that for arbitrary black brane solutions of generic Supergravities there is an adapted system of variables in which the equations of motion are exactly invariant under electric-magnetic duality, i.e. the interchange of a given extended object by its electromagnetic dual. We obtain thus a procedure to automatically construct the electromagnetic dual of a given brane without needing to solve any further equation. We apply this procedure to construct the non-extremal (p, q)-string of Type-IIB String Theory (new in the literature), explicitly showing how the dual (p, q)-five-brane automatically arises in this construction. In addition, we prove that the system of variables used is suitable for a generic characterization of every double-extremal Supergravity brane solution, which we perform in full generality.

Resolution of SU(2) monopole singularities by oxidation

We show how "colored" SU(2) BPS monopoles (that is: SU(2) monopoles satisfying the Bogomol'nyi equation whose Higgs field and magnetic charge vanish at infinity and which are singular at the origin) can be obtained from the BPST instanton by a singular dimensional reduction, explaining the origin of the singularity and implying that the singularity can be cured by the oxidation of the solution. We study the oxidation of other monopole solutions in this scheme.

Born-Infeld with Higher Derivatives

We present new models of non-linear electromagnetism which satisfy the Noether-Gaillard-Zumino current conservation and are, therefore, self-dual. The new models differ from the Born-Infeld-type models in that they deform the Maxwell theory starting with terms like $λ(\partial F)^{4}$. We provide a recursive algorithm to find all higher order terms in the action of the form $λ^{n} \partial ^{4n} F^{2n+2} $, which are necessary for the U(1) duality current conservation. We use one of these models to find a self-dual completion of the $λ(\partial F)^{4}$ correction to the open string action. We discuss the implication of these findings for the issue of UV finiteness of ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity.

H-FGK formalism for black-hole solutions of N=2, d=4 and d=5 supergravity

We rewrite the Ferrara-Gibbons-Kallosh (FGK) black-hole effective action of N=2, d=4,5 supergravities coupled to vector multiplets, replacing the metric warp factor and the physical scalars with real variables that transform in the same way as the charges under duality transformations, which simplifies the equations of motion. For a given model, the form of the solution in these variables is the same for all spherically symmetric black holes, regardless of supersymmetry or extremality.

Lifshitz-like solutions with hyperscaling violation in ungauged supergravity

In this note we describe several procedures to construct, from known black-hole and black-brane solutions of any ungauged supergravity theory, non-trivial gravitational solutions whose "near-horizon" and "near-singularity" limits are Lifshitz-like spacetimes with dynamical critical exponent z, "hyperscaling violation" exponent θand Lifshitz radius \ell that depends on the physical parameters of the original black-hole solution. Since the new Lifshitz-like solutions can be constructed from any black-hole solution of any ungauged supergravity, many of them can be easily embedded in String Theory. Some of the procedures produce supersymmetric Lifshitz-like solutions.

New E77 invariants and amplitudes

We construct a new class of manifest E77 duality invariants, which generalize the Cartan quartic invariant, familiar from studies of the black hole entropy. The new ones, being four-linear, are designed for studies of the four-vector amplitudes and to be used, upon supersymmetrization, as initial sources of deformation for the non-linear higher-derivative generalizations of the linear twisted self-duality condition. We show, however, that the new invariants are inconsistent with the expected UV divergent amplitudes in extended supergravities with non-degenerate duality groups of type E7. When E77 degenerates into U(1) the new invariants reproduce the recently discovered source of deformation for the Born-Infeld duality invariant model with higher derivatives relevant to UV divergences of the D3 brane action. These facts may explain the UV properties of perturbative supergravity.

The FGK formalism for black p-branes in d dimensions

We present a generalization to an arbitrary number of spacetime (d) and worldvolume (p+1) dimensions of the formalism proposed by Ferrara, Gibbons and Kallosh to study black holes (p=0) in d=4 dimensions. We include the special cases in which there can be dyonic and self- or anti-self-dual black branes. Most of the results valid for 4-dimensional black holes (relations between temperature, entropy and non-extremality parameter, and between entropy and black-hole potential on the horizon) are straightforwardly generalized. We apply the formalism to the case of black strings in N=2,d=5 supergravity coupled to vector multiplets, in which the black-string potential can be expressed in terms of the dual central charge and work out an explicit example with one vector multiplet, determining supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric attractors and constructing the non-extremal black-string solutions that interpolate between them.

Non-extremal black holes of N=2, d=4 supergravity

We propose a generic recipe for deforming extremal black holes into non-extremal black holes and we use it to find and study the non-extremal black-hole solutions of several N=2,d=4 supergravity models (SL(2,R)/U(1), CPn and STU with four charges). In all the cases considered, the non-extremal family of solutions smoothly interpolates between all the different extremal limits, supersymmetric and not supersymmetric. This fact can be used to find explicitly extremal non-supersymmetric solutions in the cases in which the attractor mechanism does not completely fix the values of the scalars on the event horizon and they still depend on the boundary conditions at spatial infinity. We compare (supersymmetry) Bogomol'nyi bounds with extremality bounds, we find the first-order flow equations for the non-extremal solutions and the corresponding superpotential, which gives in the different extremal limits different superpotentials for extremal black holes. We also compute the "entropies" (areas) of the inner (Cauchy) and outer (event) horizons, finding in all cases that their product gives the square of the moduli-independent entropy of the extremal solution with the same electric and magnetic charges.

The Tensor Hierarchies of Pure N=2,d=4,5,6 Supergravities

We study the supersymmetric tensor hierarchy of pure (gauged) N=2,d=4,5,6 supergravity and compare them with those of the pure, ungauged, theories (worked out by Gomis and Roest for d=5) and the predictions of the Kac-Moody approach made by Kleinschmidt and Roest. We find complete agreement in the ungauged case but we also find that, after gauging, new Stueckelberg symmetries reduce the number of independent "physical" top-forms. The analysis has to be performed to all orders in fermion fields. We discuss the construction of the worldvolume effective actions for the p-branes which are charged with respect to the (p+1)-form potentials and the relations between the tensor hierarchies and p-branes upon dimensional reduction.

The supersymmetric solutions and extensions of ungauged matter-coupled N=1,d=4 supergravity

We find the most general supersymmetric solutions of ungauged N=1,d=4 supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of vector and chiral supermultiplets, which turn out to be essentially pp-waves and strings. We also introduce magnetic 1-forms and their supersymmetry transformations and 2-forms associated to the isometries of the scalar manifold and their supersymmetry transformations. Only the latter can couple to BPS objects (strings), in agreement with our results.

SL(2,R)-invariant IIB Brane Actions

We give a universal SL(2,R)-invariant expression for all IIB p-brane actions with p=-1,1,3,5,7,9. The Wess-Zumino terms in the brane actions are determined by requiring (i) target space gauge invariance and (ii) the presence of a single Born-Infeld vector. We find that for p=7 (p=9) brane actions with these properties only exist for orbits that contain the standard D7-brane (D9-brane). We comment about the actions for the other orbits.

Seven-branes and Supersymmetry

We re-investigate the construction of half-supersymmetric 7-brane solutions of IIB supergravity. Our method is based on the requirement of having globally well-defined Killing spinors and the inclusion of SL(2,Z)-invariant source terms. In addition to the well-known solutions going back to Greene, Shapere, Vafa and Yau we find new supersymmetric configurations, containing objects whose monodromies are not related to the monodromy of a D7-brane by an SL(2,Z) transformation.

All the supersymmetric configurations of N=4,d=4 supergravity

All the supersymmetric configurations of pure, ungauged, N=4,d=4 supergravity are classified in a formalism that keeps manifest the S and T dualities of the theory. We also find simple equations that need to be satisfied by the configurations to be classical solutions of the theory. While the solutions associated to null Killing vectors were essentially classified by Tod (a classification that we refine), we find new configurations and solutions associated to timelike Killing vectors that do not satisfy Tod's rigidity hypothesis (hence, they have a non-trivial U(1) connection) and whose supersymmetry projector is associated to 1-dimensional objects (strings), although they have a trivial axion field.

Godel Spacetimes, Abelian Instantons, the Graviphoton Background and other Flacuum Solutions

We study the relations between all the vacua of Lorentzian and Euclidean d=4,5,6 SUGRAs with 8 supercharges, finding a new limiting procedure that takes us from the over-rotating near-horizon BMPV black hole to the Godel spacetime. The timelike compactification of the maximally supersymmetric Godel solution of N=1,d=5 SUGRA gives a maximally supersymmetric solution of pure Euclidean N=2,d=4 with flat space but non-trivial anti-selfdual vector field flux (``flacuum'') that, on the one hand, can be interpreted as an U(1) instanton on the 4-torus and that, on the other hand, coincides with the graviphoton background shown by Berkovits and Seiberg to produce the C-deformation introduced recently by Ooguri and Vafa. We construct flacuum solutions in other theories such as Euclidean type IIA supergravity.

Gauged/Massive Supergravities in Diverse Dimensions

We show how massive/gauged maximal supergravities in 11-n dimensions with SO(n-l,l) gauge groups (and other non-semisimple subgroups of Sl(n,R)) can be systematically obtained by dimensional reduction of ``massive 11-dimensional supergravity''. This series of massive/gauged supergravities includes, for instance, Romans' massive N=2A,d=10 supergravity for n=1, N=2,d=9 SO(2) and SO(1,1) gauged supergravities for n=2, and N=8,d=5 SO(6-l,l) gauged supergravity. In all cases, higher p-form fields get masses through the Stuckelberg mechanism which is an alternative to self-duality in odd dimensions.

Extremality Versus Supersymmetry in Stringy Black Holes

We study general black-hole solutions of the low-energy string effective action in arbitrary dimensions using a general metric that can describe them all in a unified way both in the extreme and non-extreme cases. We calculate the mass, temperature and entropy and study which relations amongst the charges and the mass lead to extremality. We find that the temperature always vanishes in the extreme limit and we find that, for a set of n charges (no further reducible by duality) there are 2^{(n-1)} combinations of the charges that imply extremality. Not all of these combinations can be central charge eigenvalues and, thus, there are in general extreme black holes which are not supersymmetric (or ``BPS-saturated''). In the N=8 supergravity case we argue that the existence of roughly as many supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric extreme black holes suggests the existence of an underlying twelve-dimensional structure.

Massless Black Holes as Black Diholes and Quadruholes

Massless black holes can be understood as bound states of a (positive mass) extreme a=\sqrt{3} black hole and a singular object with opposite (i.e. negative) mass with vanishing ADM (total) mass but non-vanishing gravitational field. Supersymmetric balance of forces is crucial for the existence of this kind of bound states and explains why the system does not move at the speed of light. We also explain how supersymmetry allows for negative mass as long as it is never isolated but in bound states of total non-negative mass.

Supersymmetry and Stationary Solutions in Dilaton-Axion Gravity

New stationary solutions of $4$-dimensional dilaton-axion gravity are presented, which correspond to the charged Taub-NUT and Israel-Wilson-Perjes (IWP) solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory. The charged axion-dilaton Taub-NUT solutions are shown to have a number of interesting properties: i) manifest $SL(2,R)$ symmetry, ii) an infinite throat in an extremal limit, iii) the throat limit coincides with an exact CFT construction. The IWP solutions are shown to admit supersymmetric Killing spinors, when embedded in $d=4,N=4$ supergravity. This poses a problem for the interpretation of supersymmetric rotating solutions as physical ground states. In the context of $10$-dimensional geometry, we show that dimensionally lifted versions of the IWP solutions are dual to certain gravitational waves in string theory.

Entropy and Action of Dilaton Black Holes

We present a detailed calculation of the entropy and action of $U(1)~2$ dilaton black holes, and show that both quantities coincide with one quarter of the area of the event horizon. Our methods of calculation make it possible to find an explanation of the rule $S = A/4$ for all static, spherically symmetric black holes studied so far. We show that the only contribution to the entropy comes from the extrinsic curvature term at the horizon, which gives $S = A/4$ independently of the charge(s) of the black hole, presence of scalar fields, etc. Previously, this result did not have a general explanation, but was established on a case-by-case basis. The on-shell Lagrangian for maximally supersymmetric extreme dilaton black holes is also calculated and shown to vanish, in agreement with the result obtained by taking the limit of the expression obtained for black holes with regular horizon. The physical meaning of the entropy is discussed in relation to the issue of splitting of extreme black holes.
