Uniform tail asymptotics for Airy kernel determinant solutions to KdV and for the narrow wedge solution to KPZ

We obtain uniform asymptotics for deformed Airy kernel determinants, which arise in models of finite temperature free fermions and which characterize the narrow wedge solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. The asymptotics for the determinants yield uniform initial data for an associated family of solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries equation, and uniform lower tail asymptotics for the narrow wedge solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation.

Universality for random matrices with equi-spaced external source: a case study of a biorthogonal ensemble

We prove the edge and bulk universality of random Hermitian matrices with equi-spaced external source. One feature of our method is that we use neither a Christoffel-Darboux type formula, nor a double-contour formula, which are standard methods to prove universality results for exactly solvable models. This matrix model is an example of a biorthogonal ensemble, which is a special kind of determinantal point process whose kernel generally does not have a Christoffel-Darboux type formula or double-contour representation. Our methods may showcase how to handle universality problems for biorthogonal ensembles in general.

Asymptotics for averages over classical orthogonal ensembles

We study averages of multiplicative eigenvalue statistics in ensembles of orthogonal Haar distributed matrices, which can alternatively be written as Toeplitz+Hankel determinants. We obtain new asymptotics for symbols with Fisher-Hartwig singularities in cases where some of the singularities merge together, and for symbols with a gap or an emerging gap. We obtain these asymptotics by relying on known analogous results in the unitary group and on asymptotics for associated orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. As consequences of our results, we derive asymptotics for gap probabilities in the Circular Orthogonal and Symplectic Ensembles, and an upper bound for the global eigenvalue rigidity in the orthogonal ensembles.

Hankel determinant and orthogonal polynomials for a Gaussian weight with a discontinuity at the edge

We compute asymptotics for Hankel determinants and orthogonal polynomials with respect to a discontinuous Gaussian weight, in a critical regime where the discontinuity is close to the edge of the associated equilibrium measure support. Their behavior is described in terms of the Ablowitz-Segur family of solutions to the Painlevé II equation. Our results complement the ones in [Xu,Zhao,2011]. As consequences of our results, we conjecture asymptotics for an Airy kernel Fredholm determinant and total integral identities for Painlevé II transcendents, and we also prove a new result on the poles of the Ablowitz-Segur solutions to the Painlevé II equation. We also highlight applications of our results in random matrix theory.

Large gap asymptotics at the hard edge for product random matrices and Muttalib-Borodin ensembles

We study the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue for certain classes of positive-definite Hermitian random matrices, in the limit where the size of the matrices becomes large. Their limit distributions can be expressed as Fredholm determinants of integral operators associated to kernels built out of Meijer $G$-functions or Wright's generalized Bessel functions. They generalize in a natural way the hard edge Bessel kernel Fredholm determinant. We express the logarithmic derivatives of the Fredholm determinants identically in terms of a $2\times 2$ Riemann-Hilbert problem, and use this representation to obtain the so-called large gap asymptotics.

Random Matrices with Merging Singularities and the Painlevé V Equation

We study the asymptotic behavior of the partition function and the correlation kernel in random matrix ensembles of the form $\frac{1}{Z_n} \big|\det \big( M^2-tI \big)\big|^α e^{-n\operatorname{Tr} V(M)}dM$, where $M$ is an $n\times n$ Hermitian matrix, $α>-1/2$ and $t\in\mathbb R$, in double scaling limits where $n\to\infty$ and simultaneously $t\to 0$. If $t$ is proportional to $1/n^2$, a transition takes place which can be described in terms of a family of solutions to the Painlevé V equation. These Painlevé solutions are in general transcendental functions, but for certain values of $α$, they are algebraic, which leads to explicit asymptotics of the partition function and the correlation kernel.

Asymptotics for the partition function in two-cut random matrix models

We obtain large N asymptotics for the Hermitian random matrix partition function \[Z_N(V)=\int_{\mathbb R^N}\prod_{i<j}(x_i-x_j)^2 \prod_{j=1}^N e^{-N V(x_j)}dx_j,\] in the case where the external potential $V$ is a polynomials such that the random matrix eigenvalues accumulate on two disjoint intervals (the two-cut case). We compute leading and sub-leading terms in the asymptotic expansion for $\log Z_N(V)$, up to terms that are small as $N$ goes to infinity. Our approach is based on the explicit computation of the first terms in the asymptotic expansion for a quartic symmetric potential $V$. Afterwards, we use deformation theory of the partition function and of the associated equilibrium measure to generalize our results to general two-cut potentials $V$. The asymptotic expansion of $\log Z_N(V)$ as $N$ goes to infinity contains terms that depend analytically on the potential $V$ and that have already appeared in the literature. In addition our method allows to compute the $V$-independent terms of the asymptotic expansion of $\log Z_N(V)$ which, to the best of our knowledge, had not appeared before in the literature. We use rigorous orthogonal polynomial and Riemann-Hilbert techniques which had so far been successful to compute asymptotics for the partition function only in the one-cut case.

Asymptotics for Toeplitz determinants: perturbation of symbols with a gap

We study the determinants of Toeplitz matrices as the size of the matrices tends to infinity, in the particular case where the symbol has two jump discontinuities and tends to zero on an arc of the unit circle at a sufficiently fast rate. We generalize an asymptotic expansion by Widom [22], which was known for symbols supported on an arc. We highlight applications of our results in the Circular Unitary Ensemble and in the study of Fredholm determinants associated to the sine kernel.

Biorthogonal ensembles with two-particle interactions

We investigate determinantal point processes on $[0,+\infty)$ of the form \begin{equation*}\label{probability distribution} \frac{1}{Z_n}\prod_{1\leq i<j\leq n}(λ_j-λ_i)\prod_{1\leq i<j\leq n}(λ_j^θ-λ_i^θ) \prod_{j=1}^n w(λ_j)dλ_j,\qquad θ\geq 1. \end{equation*} We prove that the biorthogonal polynomials associated to such models satisfy a recurrence relation and a Christoffel-Darboux formula if $θ\in\mathbb Q$, and that they can be characterized in terms of $1\times 2$ vector-valued Riemann-Hilbert problems which exhibit some non-standard properties. In addition, we obtain expressions for the equilibrium measure associated to our model if $w(λ)=e^{-nV(λ)}$ in the one-cut case with and without hard edge.

Random matrix ensembles with singularities and a hierarchy of Painlevé III equations

We study unitary invariant random matrix ensembles with singular potentials. We obtain asymptotics for the partition functions associated to the Laguerre and Gaussian Unitary Ensembles perturbed with a pole of order $k$ at the origin, in the double scaling limit where the size of the matrices grows, and at the same time the strength of the pole decreases at an appropriate speed. In addition, we obtain double scaling asymptotics of the correlation kernel for a general class of ensembles of positive-definite Hermitian matrices perturbed with a pole. Our results are described in terms of a hierarchy of higher order analogues to the Painlevé III equation, which reduces to the Painlevé III equation itself when the pole is simple.

Random matrices with equispaced external source

We study Hermitian random matrix models with an external source matrix which has equispaced eigenvalues, and with an external field such that the limiting mean density of eigenvalues is supported on a single interval as the dimension tends to infinity. We obtain strong asymptotics for the multiple orthogonal polynomials associated to these models, and as a consequence for the average characteristic polynomials. One feature of the multiple orthogonal polynomials analyzed in this paper is that the number of orthogonality weights of the polynomials grows with the degree. Nevertheless we are able to characterize them in terms of a pair of 2 x 1 vector-valued Riemann-Hilbert problems, and to perform an asymptotic analysis of the Riemann-Hilbert problems.

Numerical study of higher order analogues of the Tracy-Widom distribution

We study a family of distributions that arise in critical unitary random matrix ensembles. They are expressed as Fredholm determinants and describe the limiting distribution of the largest eigenvalue when the dimension of the random matrices tends to infinity. The family contains the Tracy-Widom distribution and higher order analogues of it. We compute the distributions numerically by solving a Riemann-Hilbert problem numerically, plot the distributions, and discuss several properties that they appear to exhibit.

Pole-free solutions of the first Painlevé hierarchy and non-generic critical behavior for the KdV equation

We establish the existence of real pole-free solutions to all even members of the Painlevé I hierarchy. We also obtain asymptotics for those solutions and describe their relevance in the description of critical asymptotic behavior of solutions to the KdV equation in the small dispersion limit. This was understood in the case of a generic critical point, and we generalize it here to the case of non-generic critical points.

The Riemann-Hilbert approach to obtain critical asymptotics for Hamiltonian perturbations of hyperbolic and elliptic systems

The present paper gives an overview of the recent developments in the description of critical behavior for Hamiltonian perturbations of hyperbolic and elliptic systems of partial differential equations. It was conjectured that this behavior can be described in terms of distinguished Painlevé transcendents, which are universal in the sense that they are, to some extent, independent of the equation and the initial data. We will consider several examples of well-known integrable equations that are expected to show this type of Painlevé behavior near critical points. The Riemann-Hilbert method is a useful tool to obtain rigorous results for such equations. We will explain the main lines of this method and we will discuss the universality conjecture from a Riemann-Hilbert point of view.

preprint2008arXiv

Universality of the break-up profile for the KdV equation in the small dispersion limit using the Riemann-Hilbert approach

We obtain an asymptotic expansion for the solution of the Cauchy problem for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation in the small dispersion limit near the point of gradient catastrophe (x_c,t_c) for the solution of the dispersionless equation. The sub-leading term in this expansion is described by the smooth solution of a fourth order ODE, which is a higher order analogue to the Painleve I equation. This is in accordance with a conjecture of Dubrovin, suggesting that this is a universal phenomenon for any Hamiltonian perturbation of a hyperbolic equation. Using the Deift/Zhou steepest descent method applied on the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the KdV equation, we are able to prove the asymptotic expansion rigorously in a double scaling limit.

Universality in unitary random matrix ensembles when the soft edge meets the hard edge

Unitary random matrix ensembles Z_{n,N}^{-1} (\det M)^alpha exp(-N Tr V(M)) dM defined on positive definite matrices M, where alpha > -1 and V is real analytic, have a hard edge at 0. The equilibrium measure associated with V typically vanishes like a square root at soft edges of the spectrum. For the case that the equilibrium measure vanishes like a square root at 0, we determine the scaling limits of the eigenvalue correlation kernel near 0 in the limit when n, N tend to infinity such that n/N - 1 = O(n^{-2/3}). For each value of alpha > -1 we find a one-parameter family of limiting kernels that we describe in terms of the Hastings-McLeod solution of the Painleve II equation with parameter alpha + 1/2.

preprint2005arXiv

Universality of the double scaling limit in random matrix models

We study unitary random matrix ensembles in the critical case where the limiting mean eigenvalue density vanishes quadratically at an interior point of the support. We establish universality of the limits of the eigenvalue correlation kernel at such a critical point in a double scaling limit. The limiting kernels are constructed out of functions associated with the second Painleve equation. This extends a result of Bleher and Its for the special case of a critical quartic potential. The two main tools we use are equilibrium measures and Riemann-Hilbert problems. In our treatment of equilibrium measures we allow a negative density near the critical point, which enables us to treat all cases simultaneously. The asymptotic analysis of the Riemann-Hilbert problem is done with the Deift/Zhou steepest descent analysis. For the construction of a local parametrix at the critical point we introduce a modification of the approach of Baik, Deift, and Johansson so that we are able to satisfy the required jump properties exactly.
