Asymptotics of determinants with a rotation-invariant weight and discontinuities along circles

We study the moment generating function of the disk counting statistics of a two-dimensional determinantal point process which generalizes the complex Ginibre point process. This moment generating function involves an $n \times n$ determinant whose weight is supported on the whole complex plane, is rotation-invariant, and has discontinuities along circles centered at $0$. These discontinuities can be thought of as a two-dimensional analogue of jump-type Fisher-Hartwig singularities. In this paper, we obtain large $n$ asymptotics for this determinant, up to and including the term of order $n^{-\smash{\frac{1}{2}}}$. We allow for any finite number of discontinuities in the bulk, one discontinuity at the edge, and any finite number of discontinuities bounded away from the bulk. As an application, we obtain the large $n$ asymptotics of all the cumulants of the disk counting function up to and including the term of order $n^{-\smash{\frac{1}{2}}}$, both in the bulk and at the edge. This improves on the best known results for the complex Ginibre point process, and for general values of our parameters these results are completely new. Our proof makes a novel use of the uniform asymptotics of the incomplete gamma function.

On the characteristic polynomial of the eigenvalue moduli of random normal matrices

We study the characteristic polynomial $p_{n}(x)=\prod_{j=1}^{n}(|z_{j}|-x)$ where the $z_{j}$ are drawn from the Mittag-Leffler ensemble, i.e. a two-dimensional determinantal point process which generalizes the Ginibre point process. We obtain precise large $n$ asymptotics for the moment generating function $\mathbb{E}[e^{\frac{u}π \, \mathrm{Im} \ln p_{n}(r)}e^{a \, \mathrm{Re} \ln p_{n}(r)}]$, in the case where $r$ is in the bulk, $u \in \mathbb{R}$ and $a \in \mathbb{N}$. This expectation involves an $n \times n$ determinant whose weight is supported on the whole complex plane, is rotation-invariant, and has both jump- and root-type singularities along the circle centered at $0$ of radius $r$. This "circular" root-type singularity differs from earlier works on Fisher-Hartwig singularities, and surprisingly yields a new kind of ingredient in the asymptotics, the so-called associated Hermite polynomials.

Uniform tail asymptotics for Airy kernel determinant solutions to KdV and for the narrow wedge solution to KPZ

We obtain uniform asymptotics for deformed Airy kernel determinants, which arise in models of finite temperature free fermions and which characterize the narrow wedge solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. The asymptotics for the determinants yield uniform initial data for an associated family of solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries equation, and uniform lower tail asymptotics for the narrow wedge solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation.

Asymptotics of Hankel determinants with a Laguerre-type or Jacobi-type potential and Fisher-Hartwig singularities

We obtain large $n$ asymptotics of $n \times n$ Hankel determinants whose weight has a one-cut regular potential and Fisher-Hartwig singularities. We restrict our attention to the case where the associated equilibrium measure possesses either one soft edge and one hard edge (Laguerre-type) or two hard edges (Jacobi-type). We also present some applications in the theory of random matrices. In particular, we can deduce from our results asymptotics for partition functions with singularities, central limit theorems, correlations of the characteristic polynomials, and gap probabilities for (piecewise constant) thinned Laguerre and Jacobi-type ensembles. Finally, we mention some links with the topics of rigidity and Gaussian multiplicative chaos.

A periodic hexagon tiling model and non-Hermitian orthogonal polynomials

We study a one-parameter family of probability measures on lozenge tilings of large regular hexagons that interpolates between the uniform measure on all possible tilings and a particular fully frozen tiling. The description of the asymptotic behavior can be separated into two regimes: the low and the high temperature regime. Our main results are the computations of the disordered regions in both regimes and the limiting densities of the different lozenges there. For low temperatures, the disorded region consists of two disjoint ellipses. In the high temperature regime the two ellipses merge into a single simply connected region. At the transition from the low to the high temperature a tacnode appears. The key to our asymptotic study is a recent approach introduced by Duits and Kuijlaars providing a double integral representation for the correlation kernel. One of the factors in the integrand is the Christoffel-Darboux kernel associated to polynomials that satisfy non-Hermitian orthogonality relations with respect to a complex-valued weight on a contour in the complex plane. We compute the asymptotic behavior of these orthogonal polynomials and the Christoffel-Darboux kernel by means of a Riemann-Hilbert analysis. After substituting the resulting asymptotic formulas into the double integral we prove our main results by classical steepest descent arguments.

Asymptotics for Toeplitz determinants: perturbation of symbols with a gap

We study the determinants of Toeplitz matrices as the size of the matrices tends to infinity, in the particular case where the symbol has two jump discontinuities and tends to zero on an arc of the unit circle at a sufficiently fast rate. We generalize an asymptotic expansion by Widom [22], which was known for symbols supported on an arc. We highlight applications of our results in the Circular Unitary Ensemble and in the study of Fredholm determinants associated to the sine kernel.
