Reconstruction of groupoids and C*-rigidity of dynamical systems

We show how to construct a graded locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid from a C*-algebra carrying a coaction of a discrete group, together with a suitable abelian subalgebra. We call this groupoid the extended Weyl groupoid. When the coaction is trivial and the subalgebra is Cartan, our groupoid agrees with Renault's Weyl groupoid. We prove that if G is a second-countable locally compact étale groupoid carrying a grading of a discrete group, and if the interior of the trivially graded isotropy is abelian and torsion free, then the extended Weyl groupoid of its reduced C*-algebra is isomorphic as a graded groupoid to G. In particular, two such groupoids are isomorphic as graded groupoids if and only if there is an equivariant diagonal-preserving isomorphism of their reduced C*-algebras. We introduce graded equivalence of groupoids, and establish that two graded groupoids in which the trivially graded isotropy has torsion-free abelian interior are graded equivalent if and only if there is an equivariant diagonal-preserving Morita equivalence between their reduced C*-algebras. We use these results to establish rigidity results for a number of classes of dynamical systems, including all actions of the natural numbers by local homeomorphisms of locally compact Hausdorff spaces.

Flow Equivalence of G-SFTs

In this paper, a G-shift of finite type (G-SFT) is a shift of finite type together with a free continuous shift-commuting action by a finite group G. We reduce the classification of G-SFTs up to equivariant flow equivalence to an algebraic classification of a class of poset-blocked matrices over the integral group ring of G. For a special case of two irreducible components with G$=\mathbb Z_2$, we compute explicit complete invariants. We relate our matrix structures to the Adler-Kitchens-Marcus group actions approach. We give examples of G-SFT applications, including a new connection to involutions of cellular automata.

The primitive ideals of the Cuntz-Krieger algebra of a row-finite higher-rank graph with no sources

We catalogue the primitive ideals of the Cuntz-Krieger algebra of a row-finite higher-rank graph with no sources. Each maximal tail in the vertex set has an abelian periodicity group of finite rank at most that of the graph; the primitive ideals in the Cuntz-Krieger algebra are indexed by pairs consisting of a maximal tail and a character of its periodicity group. The Cuntz-Krieger algebra is primitive if and only if the whole vertex set is a maximal tail and the graph is aperiodic.

Simple Cuntz-Pimsner rings

Necessary and sufficient conditions for when every non-zero ideal in a relative Cuntz-Pimsner ring contains a non-zero graded ideal, when a relative Cuntz-Pimsner ring is simple, and when every ideal in a relative Cuntz-Pimsner ring is graded, are given. A "Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem" for relative Cuntz-Pimsner rings is also given and condition (L) and condition (K) for relative Cuntz-Pimsner rings are introduced.

Algebraic Cuntz-Pimsner rings

From a system consisting of a right non-degenerate ring $R$, a pair of $R$-bimodules $Q$ and $P$ and an $R$-bimodule homomorphism $ψ:P\otimes Q\longrightarrow R$ we construct a $\Z$-graded ring $\mathcal{T}_{(P,Q,ψ)}$ called the Toeplitz ring and (for certain systems) a $\Z$-graded quotient $\mathcal{O}_{(P,Q,ψ)}$ of $\mathcal{T}_{(P,Q,ψ)}$ called the Cuntz-Pimsner ring. These rings are the algebraic analogs of the Toeplitz $C^*$-algebra and the Cuntz-Pimsner $C^*$-algebra associated to a $C^*$-correspondence (also called a Hilbert bimodule). This new construction generalizes for example the algebraic crossed product by a single automorphism, corner skew Laurent polynomial ring by a single corner automorphism and Leavitt path algebras. We also describe the structure of the graded ideals of our graded rings in terms of pairs of ideals of the coefficient ring.

Co-universal algebras associated to product systems, and gauge-invariant uniqueness theorems

Let X be a product system over a quasi-lattice ordered group. Under mild hypotheses, we associate to X a C*-algebra which is co-universal for injective Nica covariant Toeplitz representations of X which preserve the gauge coaction. Under appropriate amenability criteria, this co-universal C*-algebra coincides with the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra introduced by Sims and Yeend. We prove two key uniqueness theorems, and indicate how to use our theorems to realise a number of reduced crossed products as instances of our co-universal algebras. In each case, it is an easy corollary that the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra is isomorphic to the corresponding full crossed product.

On the Exel crossed product of topological covering maps

For dynamical systems defined by a covering map of a compact Hausdorff space and the corresponding transfer operator, the associated crossed product $C^*$-algebras $\cros$ introduced by Exel and Vershik are considered. An important property for homeomorphism dynamical systems is topological freeness. It can be extended in a natural way to in general non-invertible dynamical systems generated by covering maps. In this article, it is shown that the following four properties are equivalent: the dynamical system generated by a covering map is topologically free; the canonical imbedding of $C(X)$ into $\cros$ is a maximal abelian $C^*$-subalgebra of $\cros$; any nontrivial two sided ideal of $\cros$ has non-zero intersection with the imbedded copy of $C(X)$; a certain natural representation of $\cros$ is faithful. This result is a generalization to non-invertible dynamics of the corresponding results for crossed product $C^*$-algebras of homeomorphism dynamical systems.
