2$b$ or not 2$b$: on the rejection of $g\to b\bar b$ jets

Motivated by new physics models which lead to final states containing a high multiplicity of bottom and top quarks, we develop a tagging strategy to suppress reducible and non-reducible multi-jet backgrounds. The idea takes advantage of the properties of light parton showers and of the gluon fragmentation into heavy quarks to reject jets that do not originate from a bottom quark.

Combined signatures of heavy Higgses and vectorlike fermions at the HL-LHC

In extensions of two Higgs doublet models with vectorlike quarks and leptons the decays of new scalars or fermions can be altered by the presence of the other, depending on the hierarchy of new physics. If new fermions are heavier than Higgses, their decays may be dominated by cascade decays through charged and neutral heavy Higgs bosons. In the opposite hierarchy, the decay of a heavy Higgs can lead to single production of vectorlike quarks and leptons when Yukawa couplings to SM fermions are present. We explore the resulting novel collider signatures in either case and present projected sensitivities of future runs of the LHC to the masses and branching ratios of new fermions and heavy Higgses. Importantly, we discuss kinematic challenges of the signatures and suggest strategic observables which could be adopted in future analyses. Interpreting the prospective reach of the LHC in the context of a type-II 2HDM, we find that in the presence of vectorlike fermions heavy Higgs boson masses slightly above 2 TeV can be explored at the HL-LHC even at low $\tanβ$. For heavy Higgs decays through vectorlike leptons, this reach extends to slightly above 3 TeV for $\tanβ\gtrsim 10$. Further, these search strategies imply a reach for vectorlike quark and lepton masses close to 2.4 TeV and 1.5 TeV, respectively. This article is partly based on Refs. [1-6]

Cascade decays of Heavy Higgs bosons through vectorlike quarks

We study cascade decays of heavy neutral Higgs bosons through vectorlike quarks. We focus on scenarios where decay modes into pairs of vectorlike quarks are not kinematically open which extends the sensitivity of the LHC to larger masses. Assuming only mixing with the third family of standard model quarks the new decay modes of heavy Higgs bosons are: $H\to t_4 t \to Wbt, Zt t, ht t$ and $H\to b_4 b \to Wtb, Zb b, hb b$, where $t_4$ ($b_4$) is the new up-type (down-type) quark mass eigenstate. In the numerical analysis we assume the CP even Higgs boson in the two Higgs doublet model type-II but the signatures are relevant for many other scenarios. We identify the region of the parameter space where these decay modes are significant or can even dominate, and thus they provide the best opportunities for the simultaneous discovery of a new Higgs boson and vectorlike quarks. We further explore the reach of the High Luminosity LHC for two representative decay modes, $t_4\to Zt\to\ell\ell t$ and $b_4\to Zb\to\ell\ell b$, and found that cross sections at a 0.1 fb level can be probed with simple cut based analyses. We also find that the rates for Higgs cascade decays can be much larger than the rates for a single production of vectorlike quarks. Furthermore, the reach for vectorlike quarks in Higgs cascade decays and pair production extends to comparable masses.

Hunting for Vectorlike Quarks

We analyze decays of vectorlike quarks in extensions of the standard model and a two Higgs doublet model. We identify several typical patterns of branching ratios of the lightest new up-type quark, $t_4$, and down-type quark, $b_4$, depending on the structure of Yukawa couplings that mix the vectorlike and standard model quarks (we assume only mixing with the third generation) and also on their doublet or singlet nature. We find that decays into heavy neutral or charged Higgs bosons, when kinematically open, can easily dominate and even be close to 100\%: $b_4\to H b$ at medium to large $\tan β$, $t_4\to H t$ at small $\tan β$ and $b_4\to H^\pm t$, $t_4\to H^\pm b$ at both large and small $\tan β$. The pair production of vectorlike quarks leads to $6 t$, $4t 2b$, $2t4b$ and $6b$ final states. The decay modes into $W$, $Z$ and $h$ follow the pattern expected from the Goldstone boson equivalence limit that we generalize to scenarios with all possible couplings. We also discuss in detail the structure of Yukawa couplings required to significantly deviate from the pattern characteristic of the Goldstone boson equivalence limit that can result in essentially arbitrary branching ratios.

Lorentz and CPT Violation in Partons

A framework is presented for the factorization of high-energy hadronic processes in the presence of Lorentz and CPT violation. The comprehensive effective field theory describing Lorentz and CPT violation, the Standard-Model Extension, is used to demonstrate factorization of the hadronic tensor at leading order in electroweak interactions for deep inelastic scattering and for the Drell-Yan process. Effects controlled by both minimal and nonminimal coefficients for Lorentz violation are explored, and the equivalent parton-model description is derived. The methodology is illustrated by determining cross sections and studying estimated attainable sensitivities to Lorentz violation using real data collected at the Hadronen-Elektronen Ring Anlage and the Large Hadron Collider and simulated data for the future US-based electron-ion collider.

Lorentz violation and the electron-ion collider

We investigate the prospects for detecting violations of Lorentz symmetry in unpolarized deep inelastic electron-proton scattering in the context of the future electron-ion collider. Simulated differential cross-section data are used to place expected bounds on a class of quark-sector coefficients for Lorentz violation that induce sidereal time dependence in the scattering cross section. We find that, with $100 \; {\rm fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, the expected bounds are in the $10^{-5}-10^{-7}$ range and are roughly two orders of magnitude stronger than those that can be extracted from existing HERA data. We also discuss the possibility of extracting bounds on the remaining time-independent coefficients.

Signals with six bottom quarks for charged and neutral Higgs bosons

In extensions of two Higgs doublet models with vectorlike quarks, the decays of vectorlike quarks may easily be dominated by cascade decays through charged or neutral Higgs bosons leading to signatures with 6 top or bottom quarks. Since top quark decays also contain bottom quarks, a common signature for many possible decay chains is 6 bottom quarks in the final state. We present a search strategy focusing on this final state and find the mass ranges of vectorlike quarks and Higgs bosons that can be explored at the Large Hadron Collider. Among other results, the sensitivity to the charged and neutral Higgs bosons, extending to about 2 TeV, stands out when compared to models without vectorlike matter.

Emerging lattice approach to the K-Unitarity Triangle

It has been clear for past many years that in low energy observables new physics can only appear as a perturbation. Therefore precise theoretical predictions and precise experimental measurements have become mandatory. Here we draw attention to the significant advances that have been made on the lattice in recent years in $K\to ππ$, $ΔM_K$, the long-distance part of $\varepsilon$ and rare K-decays. Thus, in conjunction with experiments, the construction of a unitarity triangle purely from Kaon physics should soon become feasible. Along with the B-unitarity triangle, this should allow for more stringent tests of the Standard Model and tighter constraints on new physics.

Lorentz Violation in Deep Inelastic Electron-Proton Scattering

Lorentz violation in the quark sector induces a sidereal time dependence in electron-proton, proton-antiproton and proton-proton cross sections. At high energies nonperturbative effects are buried in universal nucleon parton distribution functions and Lorentz violating effects are calculable in perturbation theory. We focus on deep inelastic electron-proton scattering data collected from ZEUS and H1 at HERA and show that a sideral time analysis of these events is able to set strong constraints on most of the coefficients we consider.

New constraints and discovery potential for Higgs to Higgs cascade decays through vectorlike leptons

One of the cleanest signatures of a heavy Higgs boson in models with vectorlike leptons is $H\to e_4^\pm \ell^\mp \to h\ell^+\ell^-$ which, in two Higgs doublet model type-II, can even be the dominant decay mode of heavy Higgses. Among the decay modes of the standard model like Higgs boson, $h$, we consider $b \bar b$ and $γγ$ as representative channels with sizable and negligible background, respectively. We obtained new model independent limits on production cross section for this process from recasting existing experimental searches and interpret them within the two Higgs doublet model. In addition, we show that these limits can be improved by about two orders of magnitude with appropriate selection cuts immediately with existing data sets. We also discuss expected sensitivities with integrated luminosity up to 3 ab$^{-1}$ and present a brief overview of other channels.

New decay modes of heavy Higgs bosons in a two Higgs doublet model with vectorlike leptons

In models with extended Higgs sector and additional matter fields, the decay modes of heavy Higgs bosons can be dominated by cascade decays through the new fermions rendering present search strategies ineffective. We investigate new decay topologies of heavy neutral Higgses in two Higgs doublet model with vectorlike leptons. We also discuss constraints from existing searches and discovery prospects. Among the most interesting signatures are monojet, mono Z, mono Higgs, and Z and Higgs bosons produced with a pair of charged leptons.

Two Higgs doublet model with vectorlike leptons and contributions to $pp\to WW$ and $H\to WW$

We study a two Higgs doublet model extended by vectorlike leptons mixing with one family of standard model leptons. Generated flavor violating couplings between heavy and light leptons can dramatically alter the decay patterns of heavier Higgs bosons. We focus on $pp \to H \to ν_4 ν_μ\to W μν_μ$, where $ν_4$ is a new neutral lepton, and study possible effects of this process on the measurements of $pp \to WW$ and $H \to WW$ since it leads to the same final states. We discuss predictions for contributions to $pp \to WW$ and $H \to WW$ and their correlations from the region of the parameter space that satisfies all available constraints including precision electroweak observables and from pair production of vectorlike leptons. Large contributions, close to current limits, favor small $\tan β$ region of the parameter space. We find that, as a result of adopted cuts in experimental analyses, the contribution to $pp \to WW$ can be an order of magnitude larger than the contribution to $H \to WW$. Thus, future precise measurements of $pp\to WW$ will further constrain the parameters of the model. In addition, we also consider possible contributions to $pp\to WW$ from the heavy Higgs decays into a new charged lepton $e_4$ ($H\to e_4 μ\to W μν_μ$), exotic SM Higgs decays, and pair production of vectorlike leptons.

Contributions of flavor violating couplings of a Higgs boson to $pp\to WW$

We study contributions to $pp\to W^+W^- \to \ellν_\ell \ell^\primeν_{\ell^\prime}$ in models with a new Higgs boson, $H$, and a neutral lepton, $ν_{4}$, with couplings $H-ν_{4}-ν_μ$ and $W-ν_{4}-μ$ through the process $pp \to H \to ν_4 ν_μ\to W μν_μ\to \ellν_\ell μν_μ$. Contrary to naive expectations, we find that contributions to $pp\to WW$ can be very large while satisfying constraints from standard $H\to WW$ and $H\toγγ$ searches. Even the excess observed by ATLAS in $pp\to WW$, if taken at face value, can be easily accommodated. The various kinematic distributions fit nicely the experimentally determined ones. This scenario can arise for example in a two Higgs doublet model with vectorlike leptons.

Flavour, Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and Dark Matter: state of the art and future prospects

With the discovery of the Higgs boson the Standard Model has become a complete and comprehensive theory, which has been verified with unparalleled precision and in principle might be valid at all scales. However, several reasons remain why we firmly believe that there should be physics beyond the Standard Model. Experiments such as the LHC, new $B$ factories, and earth- and space-based astro-particle experiments provide us with unique opportunities to discover a coherent framework for many of the long-standing puzzles of our field. Here we explore several significant interconnections between the physics of the Higgs boson, the physics of flavour, and the experimental clues we have about dark matter.

Inclusive B -> X_s l^+ l^-: Complete angular analysis and a thorough study of collinear photons

We investigate logarithmically enhanced electromagnetic corrections of all angular observables in inclusive B -> X_s l^+ l^-. We present analytical results, which are supplemented by a dedicated Monte Carlo study on the treatment of collinear photons in order to determine the size of the electromagnetic logarithms. We then give the Standard Model predictions of all observables, considering all available NNLO QCD, NLO QED and power corrections, and investigate their sensitivity to New Physics. Since the structure of the double differential decay rate is modified in the presence of QED corrections, we also propose new observables which vanish if only QCD corrections are taken into account. Moreover, we study the experimental sensitivity to these new observables at Belle II.

A New Avenue to Charged Higgs Discovery in Multi-Higgs Models

Current searches for the charged Higgs at the LHC focus only on the $τν$, $cs$, and $tb$ final states. Instead, we consider the process $pp\to Φ\to W^\pm H^\mp \to W^+ W^- A$ where $Φ$ is a heavy neutral Higgs boson, $H^\pm$ is a charged Higgs boson, and $A$ is a light Higgs boson, with mass either below or above the $b\bar{b}$ threshold. The cross-section for this process is typically large when kinematically open since $H^\pm \to W^\pm A$ can be the dominant decay mode of the charged Higgs. The final state we consider has two leptons and missing energy from the doubly leptonic decay of the $W^+ W^-$ and possibly additional jets; it is therefore constrained by existing SM Higgs searches in the $W^+ W^-$ channel. We extract these constraints on the cross-section for this process as a function of the masses of the particles involved. We also apply our results specifically to a type-II two Higgs doublet model with an extra Standard-Model-singlet and obtain new and powerful constraints on $m_{H^\pm}$ and $\tanβ$. We point out that a slightly modified version of this search, with more dedicated cuts, could be used to possibly discover the charged Higgs, either with existing data or in the future.

Limits on Vectorlike Leptons from Searches for Anomalous Production of Multi-Lepton Events

We consider extensions of the Standard Model by vectorlike leptons and set limits on a new charged lepton, $e_4^\pm$, using the ATLAS search for anomalous production of multi-lepton events. It is assumed that only one Standard Model lepton, namely the muon, dominantly mixes with vectorlike leptons resulting in possible decays $e_4^\pm \to W^\pm ν_μ$, $e_4^\pm \to Zμ^\pm$, and $e_4^\pm \to h μ^\pm$. We derive generally applicable limits on the new lepton treating the branching ratios for these processes as free variables. We further interpret the general limits in two scenarios with $e_4^\pm$ originating predominantly from either the $SU(2)$ doublet or the $SU(2)$ singlet. The doublet case is more constrained as a result of larger production cross-section and extra production processes $e_4^\pm ν_4$ and $ν_4ν_4$ in addition to $e_4^+ e_4^-$, where $ν_4$ is a new neutral state accompanying $e_4$. We find that some combinations of branching ratios are poorly constrained, whereas some are constrained up to masses of more than 500 GeV. In the doublet case, assuming BR$(ν_4\rightarrow Wμ) = 1$, all masses below about 300 GeV are ruled out. Even if this condition is relaxed and additional decay modes, $ν_4 \to Z ν_μ$ and $ν_4 \to h ν_μ$, are allowed, below the Higgs threshold still almost all of the parameter space (of independent branching ratios) is ruled out. Nevertheless, even assuming the maximal production cross-section, which coincides with the doublet case, the new charged lepton can still be as light as the LEP-II limit allows. We discuss several possible improvements of current experimental analyses that would dramatically reduce the allowed parameter space, even with current data.

Flavor Physics in the LHC era: the role of the lattice

We discuss the present status of global fits to the CKM unitary triangle using the latest experimental and theoretical constraints. For the required nonperturbative weak matrix elements, we use three-flavor lattice QCD averages from www.latticeaverages.org; these have been updated from Ref. [1] to reflect all available lattice calculations as of the "End of 2011". Because of the greater than 3 sigma disagreement between the extraction of |Vub| from inclusive and exclusive semileptonic b -> u l nu (l = e,mu) decays, particular emphasis is given to a clean fit in which we remove the information from these decays. Given current theoretical and experimental inputs, we observe an approximately 3 sigma tension in the CKM unitarity triangle that may indicate the presence of new physics in the quark-flavor sector. Using a model-independent parameterization of new-physics effects, we test the compatibility of the data with scenarios in which the new physics is in kaon mixing, in B-mixing, or in B -> tau nu decay. We find that scenarios with new physics in B -> tau nu decay or in B-mixing are approximately equally preferred. Finally, we interpret these results in terms contributions to Delta S = 2 and Delta B = 2 four-fermion operators. We find that the preferred scale of new physics (with Standard-Model like couplings) is in the few hundred GeV range.

Demise of CKM & its aftermath

Using firmly established experimental inputs such as epsilon_K, Delta M_d, Delta M_s, BR(B -> tau nu), gamma, V_cb along with corresponding lattice matrix elements which have been well studied and are in full QCD such as B_K, SU3 breaking ratio xi, B_Bs and in particular without using V_ub or the pseudoscalar decay constants f_Bd or f_Bs from the latice, we show that the CKM-paradigm now appears to be in serious conflict with the data. Specifically the SM predicted value of sin(2 beta) seems too high compared to direct experimental measured value by over 3 sigma. Furthermore, our studiy shows that new physics predominantly effects B-mixings and B_d -> psi K_s, and not primarily in kaon-mixing or in B -> tau nu. Model independent operator analysis suggests the scale of underlying new physics, accompanied by a BSM CP-odd phase, responsible for breaking of the SM is less than a few TeV, possibly as low as a few hundred GeV. Two possible BSM scenarios, namely warped extra-dimensions and SM with a 4th generation, are briefly discussed. Generic predictions of warped flavor models are briefly discussed. While SM with 4th generation (SM4) is a very simple way to account for the observed anomalies, SM4 is also well motivated due to its potential role in dynamical electrweak symmetery breaking via condensation of heavy quarks and in barygenesis.

Lessons for new physics from CKM studies

We perform a global fit to the CKM unitarity triangle using the latest experimental and theoretical constraints. We present results for three different sets of constraints: the standard inputs used by CKMfitter and UTFit, the standard inputs minus |Vub|, and the standard inputs minus both |Vub| and |Vcb|. For the required nonperturbative weak matrix elements, we use three-flavor lattice QCD averages from www.latticeaverages.org; these have been updated to reflect all available lattice calculations as of the "End of 2010". Given current theoretical and experimental inputs, we observe an approximately 3σ tension in the CKM unitarity triangle that can be interpreted as sign of physics beyond the standard model in the flavor sector. Using a model-independent parameterization of new physics effects, we test the compatibility of new physics in kaon mixing, in B-mixing, or in B \rightarrow τ ν decay with the current data. Although the tension could be accommodated with each hypothesis, the scenarios with new physics in B-mixing or, to a lesser extent, in B \rightarrow τ ν decay are strongly preferred. Finally, we interpret these results in terms contributions to ΔS = 2 and ΔB = 2 four-fermion operators. We find that the preferred scale of new physics (with Standard Model like couplings) is in the few hundred GeV range.

An improved observable for the forward-backward asymmetry in B -> K* l+ l- and Bs -> phi l+ l-

We study the decay B -> K* l+ l- in the QCD factorization approach and propose a new integrated observable whose dependence on the form factors is almost negligible, consequently the non--perturbative error is significantly reduced and indeed its overall theoretical error is dominated by perturbative scale uncertainties. The new observable we propose is the ratio between the integrated forward--backward asymmetry in the [4,6] GeV^2 and [1,4] GeV^2 dilepton invariant mass bins. This new observable is particularly interesting because, when compared to the location of the zero of the FBA spectrum, it is experimentally easier to measure and its theoretical uncertainties are almost as small; moreover it displays a very strong dependence on the phase of the Wilson coefficient C_10 that is otherwise only accessible through complicated CP violating asymmetries. We illustrate the new physics sensitivity of this observable within the context of few extensions of the Standard Model, namely the SM with four generations, an MSSM with non--vanishing source of flavor changing neutral currents in the down squark sector and a Z' model with tree level flavor changing couplings.

Lattice QCD inputs to the CKM unitarity triangle analysis

We perform a global fit to the CKM unitarity triangle using the latest experimental and theoretical constraints. Our emphasis is on the hadronic weak matrix elements that enter the analysis, which must be computed using lattice QCD or other nonperturbative methods. Realistic lattice QCD calculations which include the effects of the dynamical up, down, and strange quarks are now available for all of the standard inputs to the global fit. We therefore present lattice averages for all of the necessary hadronic weak matrix elements. We attempt to account for correlations between lattice QCD results in a reasonable but conservative manner: whenever there are reasons to believe that an error is correlated between two lattice calculations, we take the degree of correlation to be 100%. These averages are suitable for use as inputs both in the global CKM unitarity triangle fit and other phenomenological analyses. In order to illustrate the impact of the lattice averages, we make Standard Model predictions for the parameters BK, |Vcb|, and |Vub|/|Vcb|. We find a (2-3) sigma tension in the unitarity triangle, depending upon whether we use the inclusive or exclusive determination of |Vcb|. If we interpret the tension as a sign of new physics in either neutral kaon or B mixing, we find that the scenario with new physics in kaon-mixing is preferred by present data.

Footprints of the Beyond in flavor physics: Possible role of the Top Two Higgs Doublet Model

The B-factories results provide an impressive confirmation of the Standard Model (SM) description of flavor and CP violation. Nevertheless, as more data were accumulated, deviations in the 2.5-3.5 sigma range have emerged pointing to the exciting possibility of new CP-odd phase(s) and flavor violating parameters in B-decays. Primarily this seems to be the case in the time dependent CP asymmetries in penguin dominated modes (e.g. B -> phi (eta') Ks). We discuss these and other deviations from the SM and, as an illustration of possible new physics scenarios, we examine the role of the Top Two Higgs Doublet Model. This is a simple extension of the SM obtained by adding second Higgs doublet in which the Yukawa interactions of the two Higgs doublets are assigned in order to naturally account for the large top-quark mass. Of course, many other extensions of the Standard Model could also account for these experimental deviations. Clearly if one takes these deviations seriously then some new particles in the 300 GeV to few TeV with associated new CP-odd phase(s) are needed.

Kinetic corrections to B -> X_c l nu at one loop

We evaluate the one-loop corrections to the Wilson coefficient of the kinetic operator in the operator product expansion of the differential B -> X_c l nu decay rate. With a moderate cut on the lepton energy, the one-loop terms change the kinetic operator contributions to spectral moments by about 20%. This amounts to a small correction for leptonic and hadronic moments, except for those which vanish at the lowest order, where the effect can be sizable. Together with a two-loop calculation of the leading-power rate and an evaluation of the one-loop corrections to the Wilson coefficient of the chromo-magnetic operator, our results will allow for a high-precision determination of |V_cb| and the b- and c-quark masses.

On Exclusive and Inclusive Rare B Decays: CKM Phenomenology and New Physics Reach

We report recent results in rare B decays. Our focus will be on b -> d gamma and b -> s l^+ l^- transitions. We discuss their impact on the CKM phenomenology and their role within our search for new physics. In particular, we analyse the impact of a recent lattice QCD estimate of the B -> K* form factor at zero recoil. We also briefly discuss the presently available optimal theoretical tools for the inclusive and exclusive modes.

Implications of B -> rho gamma measurements in the Standard Model and Supersymmetric Theories

We study the implications of the recently improved upper limits on the branching ratios for the decays B -> rho gamma, expressed as R(rho gamma/K^* gamma) = BR(B -> rho gamma)/BR(B -> K^* gamma) <0.047. We work out the constraints that the current bound on R(rho gamma/K^* gamma) implies on the parameters of the quark mixing matrix in the standard model (SM). Using the present profile of the unitarity triangle, we predict this ratio to be R(rho gamma/K^* gamma) = 0.023 +/- 0.012. We also work out the correlations involving R(rho gamma/K^* gamma), the isospin-violating ratio Delta (rho gamma), and the direct CP-violating asymmetry A_CP (rho gamma) in B -> rho gamma decays in the SM, in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM (MSSM), and in an extension of the MSSM involving an additional flavor-changing structure in b -> d transitions.

CP Violation in rare semileptonic B decays and supersymmetry

We study the effect of new flavor changing SUSY phases arising in the squark mass matrix in semileptonic decays B->Xs ll and B->K(*) ll (l=e,mu). SUSY effects are parametrized using the mass insertion approximation formalism. Constraints on SUSY contributions coming from other processes (e.g. b->s gamma, B->K* ll) are taken into account. Chargino and gluino contributions to photon and Z-mediated decays are included and non-perturbative corrections are considered. We study the correlation between the CP (and forward--backward) asymmetries and the expected value of the inclusive branching ratio. Several possible scenarios are distinguished and discussed according to the mass insertion that is considered.
