Long Range Outlook for Short-Range Correlations

Short range correlated (SRC) N N pairs are pairs of nucleons with high relative momentum (prel > kF where kF ~ 250 MeV/c is the Fermi momentum in medium to heavy nuclei) and lower center of mass momentum. The motivation for studying SRC pairs ranges from a desire to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the many-body nuclear wave-function at high-resolution to searching for explicit QCD-dynamics effects within the nuclear medium, not to mention connections to many other open problems in nuclear physics. Exploring short-range correlations was one of the physics motivations for building CEBAF (now Jefferson Lab). Scientists used the high luminosity and high energy of this cutting-edge machine to find kinematics that cleanly showed the signals of short-range correlations. This paved the way in the last two decades for tremendous progress understanding these correlations. This paper reviews recent progress and highlights outstanding questions and areas that need further study.

Minkowski Space Dynamics and Light-Front Projection

We explore the connection between the four-dimensional Minkowski-space Bethe-Salpeter equation and its light-front projection, emphasizing the implications for bound-state dynamics. Our approach incorporates dressed particles, such as quarks, via the integral representation of the corresponding propagator. We analyze the light-front dynamics of the valence component of the physical state using a hierarchical set of Green's functions, which reveals its coupling to higher Fock components when dressed particles are considered. We also present the light-front Faddeev-Bethe-Salpeter equations for three-body systems with dressed constituents. Furthermore, we discuss formal developments that are central to connecting the three-dimensional light-front dynamics onto the null-plane and the four-dimensional Minkowski-space framework, based on the Nakanishi integral representation. Selected applications to hadron structure are also reviewed.

Halo structure of $^6$He from $\textit{ab initio}$ two-nucleon spatial correlations

We evaluate pairwise correlations using ground state wave functions for $^4$He and $^6$He obtained by $\textit{ab initio}$ no-core shell model (NCSM) calculations with the Daejeon16 nucleon-nucleon interaction plus Coulomb interaction, to characterize the structures of these two systems. We demonstrate that two-nucleon spatial correlations, specifically the pair-number operator $r^0$ and the square-separation operator $r^2$ projected on two-body spin $S$ and isospin $z$-components encode important details of the halo structure of $^6$He. We also analyze the single-particle state occupancies and the two-body state occupancies for the ground state of $^4$He and $^6$He. Our results indicate that the two valence neutrons in the ground state of $^6$He dominantly form a spin-singlet configuration. The rms pair separations between core nucleons and halo neutrons of $^6$He is about 80% larger than pair separations within the swollen and off-centered "$α$ core". We show that this off-centering effect is primarily responsible for the observed increase in point-proton radius $r_p$ in $^6$He relative to $^4$He.

Dynamical mass generation in Minkowski space at QCD scale

We undertake the challenging task to reveal the properties of dressed light-quarks in the space- and time-like regions. For that aim, we solved the Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) in Minkowski space for the quark propagator in a QCD inspired model, focusing on the realization of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB) in the large coupling regime. The DSE is considered in the quenched approximation within the rainbow-ladder truncation with a massive gluon and a Pauli-Villars term, which is used to tune the infrared (IR) physics of the model. The solution of the DSE in Minkowski space is performed by resorting to the integral representation of the quark self-energy and propagator, which leads to a coupled set of closed self-consistent equations for the spectral densities, taking into account finite on-mass-shell renormalization. The parameters of the model are chosen such that the gluon mass scale is consistent with recent lattice QCD (LQCD) calculations, the Pauli-Villars mass is lowered down to about 1 GeV to concentrate strength in the infrared momentum region, and the coupling constant and renormalized mass are tuned to reproduce LQCD results for the quark mass function in the Landau gauge. Future application to study the pion consistently with DCSB within the Bethe-Salpeter framework with self-energies in Minkowski space is also delineated.

Global CP asymmetries in charmless three-body $B$ decays with final state interactions

We propose a theoretical framework to understand the observable charge-parity (CP) violation in charmless three-body $B^\pm$ decays. The decay amplitudes put together the $ππ\to KK $ re-scattering and the U-spin symmetry, treated within a CPT invariant framework. This approach applied to a two-channel model provides the magnitudes and signs of the ratios of the global CP asymmetries for $B^\pm \to K^\pm π^+ π^- \,$, $B^\pm \to K^\pm K^+ K^- \,$, $B^\pm \to π^\pm K^+ K^- \,$ and $B^\pm \to π^\pm π^+π^- \,$ decays, compatible with those obtained from the available experimental data. In addition, by considering the neutral channels we predict the ratios for the global CP asymmetries for these decays.

Thermodynamical phases in a PNJL model at zero temperature

The confinement/deconfinement transition described the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model is extended to be operative at zero temperature regime. In this study, the scalar and vector channel interaction strengths of the original PNJL model are modified by introducing a dependence on the traced Polyakov loop. In such a way the effective interactions depend on the quark phase and in turn provides a backreaction of the quarks to the gluonic sector, also at zero temperature. On general grounds from quantum chromodynamics this is an expected feature. The thermodynamics of the extended model (PNJL0) is studied in detail. It presents along with a suitable choice of the Polyakov potential, a first order confined/deconfined quark phase transition even at $T=0$. We also show that the vector channel plays an important role in order to allow $Φ\ne0$ solutions for the PNJL0 model. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the combined quarkyonic and deconfinement phases to the vector interaction strength and the proposed parametrization of the Polyakov-loop potential at $T=0$ allowed to set a window for the bulk values of the relevant parameters.

The soft-gluon limit and the infrared enhancement of the quark-gluon vertex

The Schwinger-Dyson quark equation (SDE) combined with results from lattice simulation for the propagators are used to obtain information on the quark-gluon vertex, taking into account the recent full QCD lattice results for the soft-gluon limit. Its inclusion leads to a clear enhancement of the infrared quark-gluon vertex. We also find that the relative contribution of the quark-ghost kernel to the quark-gluon vertex in the infrared region does not follow the rules from the perturbative analysis of the ultraviolet region. This shows that for QCD the intuition based on perturbation theory does not apply to the full momentum range. The framework developed in the current work provides analytical expressions for all the longitudinal components of vertex taken into account.

Pion and Kaon Structure at the Electron-Ion Collider

Understanding the origin and dynamics of hadron structure and in turn that of atomic nuclei is a central goal of nuclear physics. This challenge entails the questions of how does the roughly 1 GeV mass-scale that characterizes atomic nuclei appear; why does it have the observed value; and, enigmatically, why are the composite Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) abnormally light in comparison? In this perspective, we provide an analysis of the mass budget of the pion and proton in QCD; discuss the special role of the kaon, which lies near the boundary between dominance of strong and Higgs mass-generation mechanisms; and explain the need for a coherent effort in QCD phenomenology and continuum calculations, in exa-scale computing as provided by lattice QCD, and in experiments to make progress in understanding the origins of hadron masses and the distribution of that mass within them. We compare the unique capabilities foreseen at the electron-ion collider (EIC) with those at the hadron-electron ring accelerator (HERA), the only previous electron-proton collider; and describe five key experimental measurements, enabled by the EIC and aimed at delivering fundamental insights that will generate concrete answers to the questions of how mass and structure arise in the pion and kaon, the Standard Model's NG modes, whose surprisingly low mass is critical to the evolution of our Universe.

Theory of inclusive breakup cross section for Borromean nuclei within a four-body spectator model

We develop a model to treat the inclusive non-elastic break up reactions involving weakly bound three-cluster nuclei. Borromean, two-nucleon, halo nuclei are candidates of unstable three-fragments projectiles. The model is based on the theory of inclusive breakup reactions commonly employed in the treatment of incomplete fusion and surrogate method. The theory was developed in the 80's by Ichimura, Autern and Vincent (IAV) [Phys. Rev. C 32, 431 (1985)] \cite{IAV1985}, Udagawa and Tamura (UT)[Phys. Rev. C 24, 1348 (1981)], \cite{UT1981} and Hussein and McVoy (HM)[Nucl. Phys. A 445, 124 (1985)], \cite{HM1985}. We extend these three-body theories to derive an expression for the fragment yield in the reaction $A\,(a,b)\,X$, where the projectile is $a = x_1 + x_2 + b$. The inclusive breakup cross section is found to be the sum of a generalized four-body form of the elastic breakup cross section plus the inclusive non-elastic breakup cross section which involves the "reaction" cross section of the participant fragments, $x_1$ and $x_2$. The final result is similar to the three-body case reviewed in Austern, et al. (Phys. Rep. \textbf{154}, 125 (1987)), \cite{Austern1987}, but with important genuine four-body effects added, both in the elastic breakup cross section, which now contains the full correlations between the participant fragments, and in the inclusive non- elastic breakup. These developments should encourage experimentalists to seek more information about the $x_{1} + x_{2}$ system in the elastic breakup cross section, and to theorists to further develop and extend the surrogate method, based on the inclusive non-elastic breakup part of the $b$ spectrum.

Core momentum distribution in two-neutron halo nuclei

The core momentum distribution of a weakly-bound neutron-neutron-core exotic nucleus is computed within a renormalized zero-range three-body model, with interactions in the s-wave channel. The halo wave-function in momentum space is obtained by using as inputs the two-body scattering lengths and the two-neutron separation energy. The core momentum densities are computed for $^{11}$Li, $^{14}$Be $^{20}$C and $^{22}$C. The model describes the experimental data for $^{11}$Li, $^{14}$Be and to some extend $^{20}$C. The recoil momentum distribution of the $^{20}$C from the breakup of $^{22}$C nucleus is computed for different two-neutron separation energies, and from the comparison with recent experimental data the two-neutron separation energy is estimated in the range $100\lesssim S_{2n}\lesssim 400$ KeV. The recoil momentum distribution depends weakly on the neutron-$^{20}$C scattering length, while the matter radius is strongly sensitive to it. The expected universality of the momentum distribution width is verified by also considering excited states for the system.

Pion in the Medium with a Light-Front Model

The pion properties in symmetric nuclear matter are investigated with the Quark-Meson Coupling (QMC) Model plus the light-front constituent quark model~(LFCQM). The LFCQM has been quite successful in describing the properties of pseudoscalar mesons in vacuum, such as the electromagnetic elastic form factors, electromagnetic radii, and decay constants. We study the pion properties in symmetric nuclear matter with the in-medium input recalculated through the QMC model, which provides the in-medium modification of the LFCQM.

Solutions of the Bethe-Salpeter Equation in Minkowski space: a comparative study

The Bethe-Salpeter Equation for a two-scalar, S-wave bound system, interacting through a massive scalar, is investigated within the ladder approximation. By assuming a Nakanishi integral representation of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude, one can deduce new integral equations that can be solved and quantitatively studied, overcoming the analytic difficulties of the Minkowski space. Finally, it is shown that the Light-front distributions of the valence state, directly obtained from the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude, open an effective window for studying the two-body dynamics.

Quantitative studies of the homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter Equation in Minkowski space

The Bethe-Salpeter Equation for a bound system, composed by two massive scalars exchanging a massive scalar, is quantitatively investigated in ladder approximation, within the Nakanishi integral representation approach. For the S-wave case, numerical solutions with a form inspired by the Nakanishi integral representation, have been calculated. The needed Nakanishi weight functions have been evaluated by solving two different eigenequations, obtained directly from the Bethe-Salpeter equation applying the Light-Front projection technique. A remarkable agreement, in particular for the eigenvalues, has been achieved, numerically confirming that the Nakanishi uniqueness theorem for the weight functions, demonstrated in the context of the perturbative analysis of the multi-leg transition amplitudes and playing a basic role in suggesting one of the two adopted eigenequations, can be extended to a non perturbative realm. The detailed, quantitative studies are completed by presenting both probabilities and Light-Front momentum distributions for the valence component of the bound state.

Two-body scattering states in Minkowski space and the Nakanishi integral representation onto the null plane

The Nakanishi perturbative integral representation of the four-dimensional T-matrix is investigated in order to get a workable treatment for scattering states, solutions of the inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter Equation, in Minkowski space. The projection onto the null-plane of the four-dimensional inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter Equation plays a key role for devising an equation for the Nakanishi weight function (a real function), as in the homogeneous case that corresponds to bound states and it has been already studied within different frameworks. In this paper, the whole formal development is illustrated in detail and applied to a system, composed by two massive scalars interacting through the exchange of a massive scalar. The explicit expression of the scattering integral equations are also obtained in ladder approximation, and, as simple applications of our formalism, some limiting cases, like the zero-energy limit and the Wick-Cutkosky model in the continuum, are presented.

Elastic electron-deuteron scattering and two-body current operators in the Light-Front Hamiltonian Dynamics

The electromagnetic properties of the deuteron are investigated within a Light-Front Hamiltonian Dynamics framework, with a current operator that contains both one-body and two-body contributions. In this work, we are considering new two-body contributions, with a dynamical nature generated within a Yukawa model and a structure inspired by a recent analysis of the current operator, that acts on the three-dimensional valence component and fulfills the Ward-Takahashi identity. Preliminary results for the magnetic moment are shown.

Projecting the Bethe-Salpeter Equation onto the Light-Front and back: A Short Review

The technique of projecting the four-dimensional two-body Bethe-Salpeter equation onto the three-dimensional Light-Front hypersurface, combined with the quasi-potential approach, is briefly illustrated, by placing a particular emphasis on the relation between the projection method and the effective dynamics of the valence component of the Light-Front wave function. Some details on how to construct the Fock expansion of both i) the Light-Front effective interaction and ii) the electromagnetic current operator, satisfying the proper Ward-Takahashi identity, will be presented, addressing the relevance of the Fock content in the operators living onto the Light-Front hypersurface. Finally, the generalization of the formalism to the three-particle case will be outlined.
