Field-induced compensation of magnetic exchange as the possible origin of reentrant superconductivity in UTe$_2$

The potential spin-triplet heavy-fermion superconductor UTe$_2$ exhibits signatures of multiple distinct superconducting phases. For field aligned along the $b$ axis, a metamagnetic transition occurs at $μ_0 H_\mathrm{m}\approx35\,$T. It is associated with magnetic fluctuations that may be beneficial for the field-reinforced superconductivity surviving up to $H_\mathrm{m}$. Once the field is tilted away from the $b$ towards the $c$ axis, a reentrant superconducting phase emerges just above $H_\mathrm{m}$. In order to better understand this remarkably field-resistant superconducting phase, we conducted magnetic-torque and magnetotransport measurements in pulsed magnetic fields. We determine the record-breaking upper critical field of $μ_0 H_\mathrm{c2}\approx 73\,$T and its evolution with angle. Furthermore, the normal-state Hall effect experiences a drastic suppression indicative of a reduced band polarization above $H_\mathrm{m}$ in the angular range around $30^\circ$ caused by a partial compensation between the applied field and an exchange field. This promotes the Jaccarino-Peter effect as a likely mechanism for the reentrant superconductivity above $H_\mathrm{m}$.

Bonding and Electronic Nature of the Anionic Framework in LaPd$_3$S$_4$

Double Dirac materials are a topological phase of matter in which a non-symmorphic symmetry enforces greater electronic degeneracy than normally expected up to eightfold. The cubic palladium bronzes NaPd$_3$O$_4$ and LaPd$_3$S$_4$ are built of Pd$_3$X$_4$ (X = O, S) anionic frameworks that are ionically bonded to A cations (A = Na, La). These materials were recently identified computationally as harboring eightfold fermions. Here we report the preparation of single crystals and electronic properties of LaPd$_3$S$_4$. Measurements down to T = 0.45 K and in magnetic fields up to $μ$0H = 65 T are consistent with normal Fermi liquid physics of a Dirac metal in the presence of dilute magnetic impurities. This interpretation is further confirmed by analysis of specific heat, magnetization measurements and comparison to density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Through a bonding analysis of the DFT electronic structure of NaPd$_3$O$_4$ and LaPd$_3$S$_4$, we identify the origin of the stability of the anionic Pd$_3$X$_4$ framework at higher electron counts for X = S than X = O, and propose chemical tuning strategies to enable shifting the 8-fold fermion points to the Fermi level.

Effect of paramagnetic impurities on superconductivity in polyhydrides: $\textit{s}$-wave order parameter in Nd-doped LaH$_{10}$

Polyhydrides are a novel class of superconducting materials with extremely high critical parameters, which is very promising for applications. On the other hand, complete experimental study of the magnetic phase diagram for the best so far known superconductor, lanthanum decahydride LaH$_{10}$, encounters a serious complication because of the large upper critical magnetic field $\textit{H}$$_{C2}$(0), exceeding 120-160 T. Partial replacement of La atoms by magnetic Nd atoms results in a decrease of the upper critical field, which makes it attainable for existing pulse magnets. We found that addition of neodymium leads to significant suppression of superconductivity in LaH$_{10}$: each atomic % of Nd causes decrease in $\textit{T}$$_{C}$ by 10-11 K. Using strong pulsed magnetic fields up to 68 T, we constructed the magnetic phase diagram of the ternary (La,Nd)H$_{10}$ superhydride, which appears to be surprisingly linear with $\textit{H}$$_{C2}$ $\propto$ |$\textit{T}$ - $\textit{T}$$_C$|. The pronounced suppression of superconductivity in LaH$_{10}$ by magnetic Nd atoms and the robustness of $\textit{T}$$_C$ with respect to nonmagnetic impurities (e.g., Y, Al, C) under Anderson's theorem indicate the isotropic ($\textit{s}$-wave) character of conventional electron-phonon pairing in the synthesized superhydrides.

Superconductivity in Weyl Semimetal Candidate MoTe2

In recent years, layered transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted considerable attention because of their rich physics; for example, these materials exhibit superconductivity, charge density waves, and the valley Hall effect. As a result, TMDs have promising potential applications in electronics, catalysis, and spintronics. Despite the fact that the majority of related research focuses on semiconducting TMDs (e.g., MoS2), the characteristics of WTe2 are provoking strong interest in semimetallic TMDs with extremely large magnetoresistance, pressure-driven superconductivity, and the predicted Weyl semimetal (WSM) state. In this work, we investigate the sister compound of WTe2, MoTe2, which is also predicted to be a WSM and a quantum spin Hall insulator in bulk and monolayer form, respectively. We find that MoTe2 exhibits superconductivity with a resistive transition temperature Tc of 0.1 K. The application of a small pressure (such as 0.4 GPa) is shown to dramatically enhance the Tc, with a maximum value of 8.2 K being obtained at 11.7 GPa (a more than 80-fold increase in Tc). This yields a dome-shaped superconducting phase diagram. Further explorations into the nature of the superconductivity in this system may provide insights into the interplay between strong correlations and topological physics.

Tuning the critical magnetic field of the triplon Bose-Einstein condensation in Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_x$Cr$_2$O$_8$

The structure and magnetic interactions of the triplon Bose-Einstein condensation candidates Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ and Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ have been studied thoroughly in the literature, but little is known about a possible triplon condensation in the corresponding solid solution Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_x$Cr$_2$O$_8$. We have prepared various members of this solid solution and systematically examined their magnetic properties in high magnetic fields up to 60 T and at low temperatures down to 340 mK, by means of pulsed field and cantilever magnetometry. From these experiments for $x\in\{3,2.9,2.8,2.7,2.6,2.5\}$, we find that the critical fields of Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_x$Cr$_2$O$_8$ decrease monotonically as a function of the Sr content $x$. This change is in good agreement with the earlier reported variation of the magnetic interactions in these compounds.

Spectroscopic study of the magnetic ground state of Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$

We have investigated single crystals and polycrystals from the series Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$, $-0.004 \leq y \leq 0.018$ by electron spin resonance, muon spin relaxation and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Our data establish that at lowest temperatures all samples exhibit bulk magnetic order. Slight Fe-excess induces low-moment ferromagnetism, consistent with bulk magnetometry ($\simeq 0.06 ~μ_B/{\rm Fe}$), Nb--rich and stoichiometric NbFe$_2$ display spin density wave order with small magnetic moment amplitudes of the order $\sim 0.001 - 0.01 ~μ_B/{\rm Fe}$. This provides microscopic evidence for a modulated magnetic state on the border of ferromagnetism in NbFe$_2$.
