Non-reciprocal Exciton-Polariton Ring Lattices

Recent experiments have shown the transfer of orbital angular momentum (OAM) from a non-resonant laser onto an exciton-polariton condensate, despite earlier views that the phase information of such a laser should be lost during the process of polariton condensation. We study with a phenomenological theory the interplay of a usual angular momentum independent gain and an angular momentum preserving gain. We find that even when the latter is much smaller, it is enough to favour condensation into a given orbital angular momentum state. This further allows a breaking of symmetry in the system, which further manifests in non-reciprocal one-way propagation in a lattice of coupled rings. Even though we consider only Hermitian reciprocal coupling between rings, the local non-Hermiticity generates an effective non-reciprocal coupling and supports a non-Hermitian topological invariant (winding number) associated to a non-Hermitian skin effect.

Creating and concentrating quantum resource states in noisy environments using a quantum neural network

Quantum information processing tasks require exotic quantum states as a prerequisite. They are usually prepared with many different methods tailored to the specific resource state. Here we provide a versatile unified state preparation scheme based on a driven quantum network composed of randomly-coupled fermionic nodes. The output of such a system is then superposed with the help of linear mixing where weights and phases are trained in order to obtain desired output quantum states. We explicitly show that our method is robust and can be utilized to create almost perfect maximally entangled, NOON, W, cluster, and discorded states. Furthermore, the treatment includes energy decay in the system as well as dephasing and depolarization. Under these noisy conditions we show that the target states are achieved with high fidelity by tuning controllable parameters and providing sufficient strength to the driving of the quantum network. Finally, in very noisy systems, where noise is comparable to the driving strength, we show how to concentrate entanglement by mixing more states in a larger network.

Room Temperature Light-Mediated Long-Range Coupling of Excitons in Perovskites

Perovskites have been the focus of attention due to their multitude of outstanding optoelectronic properties and structural versatility. Two-dimensional halide perovskite such as (C_6H_5C_2H_4NH_3)_2PbI_4, or simply PEPI, forms natural multiple quantum wells with enhanced light-matter interactions, making them attractive systems for further investigation. This work reports tunable splitting of exciton modes in PEPI resulting from strong light-matter interactions, manifested as multiple dips (modes) in the reflection spectra. While the origin of the redder mode is well understood, that for the bluer dip at room temperature is still lacking. Here, it is revealed that the presence of the multiple modes originates from an indirect coupling between excitons in different quantum wells. The long-range characteristic of the mediated coupling between excitons in distant quantum wells is also demonstrated in a structure design along with its tunability. Moreover, a device architecture involving an end silver layer enhances the two excitonic modes and provides further tunability. Importantly, this work will motivate the possibility of coupling of the excitonic modes with a confined light mode in a microcavity to produce multiple exciton-polariton modes.

Time crystal and chaos in the hybrid atom-optomechanics system

We consider atoms in two different periodic potentials induced by different lasers, one of which is coupled to a mechanical membrane via radiation pressure force. The atoms are intrinsically two-level systems that can absorb or emit photons, but the dynamics of their position and momentum are treated classically. On the other hand, the membrane, the cavity field, and the intrinsic two-level atoms are treated quantum mechanically. We show that the mean excitation of the three systems can be stable, periodically oscillating, or in a chaotic state depending on the strength of the coupling between them. We define regular, time crystal, and chaotic phases, and present a phase diagram where the three phases can be achieved by manipulating the field-membrane and field-atom coupling strengths. The first and second-order correlation functions in different phases are also calculated, which can be observed in experiments. Our proposal offers a new way to generate and tune time crystal and chaotic phases in a well-established atom-optomechanics system.

Dynamical blockade in a single mode bosonic system

We introduce a dynamical blockade phenomenon occurring in a nonlinear bosonic mode induced by a combination of continuous and pulsed excitations. We find that the underlying mechanism for the blockade is general, enhancing antibunching in the strongly nonlinear regime and inducing it in the weakly nonlinear regime, without fine-tuning the system parameters. Moreover, this mechanism shows advantages over existing blockade mechanisms and is suitable for implementation in a wide variety of systems due to its simplicity and universality.

Reconstructing quantum states with quantum reservoir networks

Reconstructing quantum states is an important task for various emerging quantum technologies. The process of reconstructing the density matrix of a quantum state is known as quantum state tomography. Conventionally, tomography of arbitrary quantum states is challenging as the paradigm of efficient protocols has remained in applying specific techniques for different types of quantum states. Here we introduce a quantum state tomography platform based on the framework of reservoir computing. It forms a quantum neural network, and operates as a comprehensive device for reconstructing an arbitrary quantum state (finite dimensional or continuous variable). This is achieved with only measuring the average occupation numbers in a single physical setup, without the need of any knowledge of optimum measurement basis or correlation measurements.

Emergence of micro-frequency comb via limit cycles in dissipatively coupled condensates

Self-sustained oscillations, limit cycles, are a fundamental phenomenon unique to nonlinear dynamic systems of high-dimensional phase space. They enable understanding of a wide range of cyclic processes in natural, social and engineering systems. Here we show that limit cycles form in coupled polariton cavities following the breaking of Josephson coupling, leading to frequency-comb emission. The limit cycles and destruction of Josephson coupling both appear due to interplay between strong polariton-polariton interaction and a dissipative contribution to the cavity coupling. The resulting nonlinear dynamics of the condensates is characterized by asymmetric population distribution and nontrivial average phase difference between the two condensates, and by time-periodic modulation of their amplitudes and phases. The latter is manifested by coherent emission of new equidistant frequency components. The emission spectrum resembles that of a micro-frequency comb, but originates from a fundamentally different mechanism than that of existing frequency combs. It allows non-resonant excitation with a power input much below the conventional semiconductor laser threshold. The comb line spacing is determined by the interaction and coupling strengths, and is adjustable up to multi-terahertz frequency. The work establishes coupled polariton cavities as an experimental platform for rich nonlinear dynamic phenomena.

Chiral Bogoliubons in Nonlinear Bosonic Systems

We present a versatile scheme for creating topological Bogoliubov excitations in weakly interacting bosonic systems. Our proposal relies on a background stationary field that consists of a Kagome vortex lattice, which breaks time-reversal symmetry and induces a periodic potential for Bogoliubov excitations. In analogy to the Haldane model, no external magnetic field or net flux is required. We construct a generic model based on the two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear Schrödinger equation and demonstrate the emergence of topological gaps crossed by chiral Bogoliubov edge modes. Our scheme can be realized in a wide variety of physical systems ranging from nonlinear optical systems to exciton-polariton condensates.

Switching waves in multi-level incoherently driven polariton condensates

We show theoretically that an open-dissipative polariton condensate confined within a trapping potential and driven by an incoherent pumping scheme gives rise to bistability between odd and even modes of the potential. Switching from one state to the other can be controlled via incoherent pulsing which becomes an important step towards construction of low-powered opto-electronic devices. The origin of the effect comes from modulational instability between odd and even states of the trapping potential governed by the nonlinear polariton-polariton interactions.

Topological Polaritons and Excitons in Garden Variety Systems

Topological polaritons (aka topolaritons) present a new frontier for topological behavior in solid-state systems. They combine light and matter, which allows to probe and manipulate them in a variety of ways. They can also be made strongly interacting, due to their excitonic component. So far, however, their realization was deemed rather challenging. Here we present a scheme which allows to realize topolaritons in garden variety zinc-blende quantum wells. Our proposal requires a moderate magnetic field and a potential landscape which can be implemented, e.g., via surface acoustic waves or patterning. We identify indirect excitons in double quantum wells as a particularly appealing alternative for topological states in exciton-based systems. Indirect excitons are robust and long lived (with lifetimes up to milliseconds), and, therefore, provide a flexible platform for the realization, probing, and utilization of topological coupled light-matter states.

Triggered single photon emitters based on stimulated parametric scattering in weakly nonlinear systems

We introduce a scheme of single photon emission based on four-wave mixing in a three mode system with weak Kerr-type nonlinearity. A highly populated lower energy mode results in strong stimulated scattering of particle pairs out of the central mode, which consequently limits the central mode occupation. Thus, the system can be reduced to a $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear medium with greatly enhanced interaction constant. As a model setup we consider dipolaritons in semiconductor microcavities. Using the master equation approach we show strong antibunching under continuous wave pump, which largely exceeds the conventional blockade mechanism. Finally, using a pulsed excitation we demonstrate theoretically a triggered single photon emitter in a weakly nonlinear system with 33% emission probability.

Multimode entanglement in coupled cavity arrays

We study a driven-dissipative array of coupled nonlinear optical resonators by numerically solving the Von Neumann equation for the density matrix. We demonstrate that quantum correlated states of many photons can be generated also in the limit where the nonlinearity is much smaller than the losses, contrarily to common expectations. Quantum correlations in this case arise from interference between different pathways that the system can follow in the Hilbert space to reach its steady state under the effect of coherent driving fields. We characterize in particular two systems: a linear chain of three coupled cavities and an array of eight coupled cavities. We demonstrate the existence of a parameter range where the system emits photons with continuous-variable bipartite and quadripartite entanglement, in the case of the first and the second system respectively. This entanglement is shown to survive realistic rates of pure dephasing and opens a new perspective for the realization of quantum simulators or entangled photon sources without the challenging requirement of strong optical nonlinearities.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in a polariton and photon laser

We report on the simultaneous observation of spontaneous symmetry breaking and long-range spatial coherence both in the strong and the weak-coupling regime in a semiconductor microcavity. Under pulsed excitation, the formation of a stochastic order parameter is observed in polariton and photon lasing regimes. Single-shot measurements of the Stokes vector of the emission exhibit the buildup of stochastic polarization. Below threshold, the polarization noise does not exceed 10%, while above threshold we observe a total polarization of up to 50% after each excitation pulse, while the polarization averaged over the ensemble of pulses remains nearly zero. In both polariton and photon lasing regimes, the stochastic polarization buildup is accompanied by the buildup of spatial coherence. We find that the Landau criterion of spontaneous symmetry breaking and Penrose-Onsager criterion of long-range order for Bose-Einstein condensation are met in both polariton and photon lasing regimes.

The Non-linear Optical Spin Hall Effect and Long-Range Spin Transport in Polariton Lasers

We report on the experimental observation of the non-linear analogue of the optical spin Hall effect under highly non-resonant circularly polarized excitation of an exciton polariton condensate in a GaAs/AlGaAs microcavity. Initially circularly polarized polariton condensates propagate over macroscopic distances while the collective condensate spins coherently precess around an effective magnetic field in the sample plane performing up to four complete revolutions.
