Recent advances in terahertz photonic technologies based on graphene and their applications

Graphene is a unique two-dimensional (2D) material that has been extensively investigated owing to its extraordinary photonic, electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties. Excited plasmons along its surface and other unique features are expected to play an important role in many emerging photonic technologies with drastically improved and tunable functionalities. This review is focused on presenting several recently introduced photonic phenomena based on graphene, beyond its usual linear response, such as nonlinear, active, topological, and nonreciprocal effects. The physical mechanisms and various envisioned photonic applications corresponding to these novel intriguing functionalities are also reported. The presented graphene-based technologies promise to revolutionize the field of photonics at the relatively unexplored terahertz (THz) frequency range. They are envisioned to lead to the design of compact harmonic generators, low-power wave mixers, linear and nonlinear sensors, magnet-free isolators and circulators, photonic topological insulators, modulators, compact coherent optical radiation sources, and subwavelength imaging devices.

Tunable and broadband coherent perfect absorbers with nonlinear and amplification performance based on asymmetric bifacial graphene metasurfaces

We present an asymmetric bifacial graphene metasurface to realize tunable and broadband coherent perfect absorption (CPA) at terahertz (THz) frequencies. The proposed design is composed of two dissimilar graphene square patch metasurfaces stacked over an ultrathin dielectric substrate. Nonlinear CPA performance without resorting to optical nonlinearities and amplification are demonstrated based on wave interference phenomena taking place along and inside this subwavelength structure. Broadband asymmetric reflection from opposite directions is obtained in the case of single wave illumination. This response acts as a precursor to the presented tunable and broadband nonlinear CPA performance and the inverse response to absorption, i.e., amplification, when an additional input wave coherently interacts with the opposite propagating incident wave. The proposed ultrathin broadband CPA device is expected to be a vital component to several new on-chip THz communication devices, such as optical modulators, sensors, photodetectors, and all-optical small-signal amplifiers.

Tunable nonlinear and active THz devices based on hybrid graphene metasurfaces

Graphene is a two-dimensional layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice, whose outstanding properties makes it an excellent material for future electronic and photonic terahertz (THz) devices. In this work, we design hybrid graphene metasurfaces by using a monolayer graphene placed over a metallic grating, operating in the THz frequency range. Perfect absorption can be achieved at the resonance, where the electric field is greatly enhanced due to the coupling between the graphene and the grating plasmonic responses. The enhancement of the electric field along the graphene monolayer, as well as the large nonlinear conductivity of graphene, can dramatically boost the nonlinear response of the proposed THz device. In addition, the presented enhanced nonlinear effects can be significantly tuned by varying the doping level of graphene. The proposed structure can be used in the design of THz-frequency generators and all-optical processors.

Tunable THz generation and enhanced nonlinear effects with active and passive graphene hyperbolic metamaterials

The active and nonlinear graphene properties are limited due to weak light matter interaction between the ultrathin graphene and the incident light. In this work, we present enhanced nonlinear effects at the low terahertz (THz) range by designing a new patterned graphene hyperbolic metamaterial (GHMM). More specifically, it is demonstrated that the third harmonic generation (THG) can be significantly enhanced by the proposed GHMM due to the field enhancement at the resonance as well as the supported slow light response that fosters strong light matter interaction.

Tunable and Broadband Coherent Perfect Absorption by Ultrathin Black Phosphorus Metasurfaces

Black phosphorus (BP), a relative new plasmonic two-dimensional (2D) material, offers unique photonic and electronic properties. In this work, we propose a new tunable and broadband ultrathin coherent perfect absorber (CPA) device operating in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. It is based on a bifacial metasurface made of BP patch periodic arrays separated by a thin dielectric layer. Broadband CPA bandwidth is realized due to the ultrathin thickness of the proposed device and the extraordinary properties of BP. In addition, a substantial modulation between CPA and complete transparency is achieved by adjusting the phase difference between the two counter-propagating incident waves. The CPA performance can be tuned by dynamically changing the electron doping level of BP. The CPA response under normal and oblique transverse magnetic (TM) and electric (TE) polarized incident waves is investigated. It is derived that CPA can be achieved under both incident polarizations and across a broad range of incident angles. The presented CPA device can be used in the design of tunable planar THz modulators, all-optical switches, detectors, and signal processors.

Broadband Polarizers Based on Graphene Metasurfaces

We present terahertz (THz) metasurfaces based on aligned rectangular graphene patches placed on top of a dielectric layer to convert the transmitted linearly polarized waves to circular or elliptical polarized radiation. Our results lead to the design of an ultrathin broadband THz quarter-wave plate. In addition, ultrathin metasurfaces based on arrays of L-shaped graphene periodic patches are demonstrated to achieve broadband cross-polarization transformation in reflection and transmission. The proposed metasurface designs have tunable responses and are envisioned to become the building blocks of several integrated THz systems.
