Asymptotics of quantum invariants of surface diffeomorphisms II: The figure-eight knot complement

In earlier work, the authors introduced a conjecture which, for an orientation-preserving diffeomorphism $φ\colon S \to S$ of a surface, connects a certain quantum invariant of $φ$ with the hyperbolic volume of its mapping torus $M_φ$. This article provides a proof of this conjecture in the simplest case where it applies, namely when the surface $S$ is the one-puncture torus and the mapping torus $M_φ$ is the complement of the figure-eight knot.

WebFace260M: A Benchmark for Million-Scale Deep Face Recognition

Face benchmarks empower the research community to train and evaluate high-performance face recognition systems. In this paper, we contribute a new million-scale recognition benchmark, containing uncurated 4M identities/260M faces (WebFace260M) and cleaned 2M identities/42M faces (WebFace42M) training data, as well as an elaborately designed time-constrained evaluation protocol. Firstly, we collect 4M name lists and download 260M faces from the Internet. Then, a Cleaning Automatically utilizing Self-Training (CAST) pipeline is devised to purify the tremendous WebFace260M, which is efficient and scalable. To the best of our knowledge, the cleaned WebFace42M is the largest public face recognition training set and we expect to close the data gap between academia and industry. Referring to practical deployments, Face Recognition Under Inference Time conStraint (FRUITS) protocol and a new test set with rich attributes are constructed. Besides, we gather a large-scale masked face sub-set for biometrics assessment under COVID-19. For a comprehensive evaluation of face matchers, three recognition tasks are performed under standard, masked and unbiased settings, respectively. Equipped with this benchmark, we delve into million-scale face recognition problems. A distributed framework is developed to train face recognition models efficiently without tampering with the performance. Enabled by WebFace42M, we reduce 40% failure rate on the challenging IJB-C set and rank 3rd among 430 entries on NIST-FRVT. Even 10% data (WebFace4M) shows superior performance compared with the public training sets. Furthermore, comprehensive baselines are established under the FRUITS-100/500/1000 milliseconds protocols. The proposed benchmark shows enormous potential on standard, masked and unbiased face recognition scenarios. Our WebFace260M website is https://www.face-benchmark.org.

Growth of quantum 6j-symbols and applications to the Volume Conjecture

We prove the Turaev-Viro invariants volume conjecture for a "universal" class of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds that produces all 3-manifolds with empty or toroidal boundary by Dehn filling. This leads to two-sided bounds on the volume of any hyperbolic 3-manifold with empty or toroidal boundary in terms of the growth rate of the Turaev-Viro invariants of the complement of an appropriate link contained in the manifold. We also provide evidence for a conjecture of Andersen, Masbaum and Ueno (AMU conjecture) about certain quantum representations of surface mapping class groups. A key step in our proofs is finding a sharp upper bound on the growth rate of the quantum $6j-$symbol evaluated at $q=e^{\frac{2πi}{r}}.$

Quadruple-enhanced four-wave mixing in nanometer plasmonic hotspots: classical theory and experiments

Efficiency is a critical factor limiting the applications of nonlinear plasmonic devices. We show by theory and experiments that high efficiency four-wave mixing (FWM) is achieved in nanometer size plasmonic hotspots, which open up opportunities for nanoscale light manipulation. First, we present a classical calculation on the efficiency of frequency conversion by quadruple-enhanced FWM for a Kerr nonlinear material loaded in the plasmonic hotspot of a gold nanosphere dimer. The results indicate the viability to achieve over 10% efficiency in a nanometer volume under milliwatts of pump power consumption or less. Next, we present experimental results which show around 10% linewidth broadening of a 100 fs pulsed laser by a monolayer graphene in a gold nanosphere-plane junction. Such a high efficiency, low power, and nanoscale nonlinear process is a promising candidate for making ultra-compact and high-speed nonlinear optical devices.

Gap plasmon resonator arrays for unidirectional launching and shaping of surface plasmon polaritons

We report the design and experimental realization of a kind of miniaturized devices for efficient unidirectional launching and shaping of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Each device consists of an array of evenly spaced gap plasmon resonators with varying dimensions. Particle swarm optimization is used to achieve a theoretical two dimensional launching efficiency of about 51%, under the normal illumination of a 5-μm waist Gaussian beam at 780 nm. By modifying the wavefront of the SPPs, unidirectional SPPs with focused, Bessel and Airy profiles are launched and imaged with leakage radiation microscopy.

On type-preserving representations of the four-punctured sphere group

We give counterexamples to a question of Bowditch that if a non-elementary type-preserving representation $ρ:π_1(Σ_{g,n})\rightarrow PSL(2;\mathbb R)$ of a punctured surface group sends every non-peripheral simple closed curve to a hyperbolic element, then must $ρ$ be Fuchsian. The counterexamples come from relative Euler class $\pm1$ representations of the four-punctured sphere group. We also show that the mapping class group action on each non-extremal component of the character space of type-preserving representations of the four-punctured sphere group is ergodic, which confirms a conjecture of Goldman for this case. The main tool we use is Kashaev-Penner's lengths coordinates of the decorated character spaces.

Plasmonic Crystal Cavity on Single-Mode Optical Fiber End Facet for Label-Free Biosensing

All surface plasmon resonance (SPR) devices on single-mode optical fibers' (SMF) end facets, as reported up to date, are limited by severely broad and shallow resonance spectra. The consequent poor performance when they are used as refractive index sensors, together with the challenge of nanofabrication on fiber end facets, has prohibited the development of such devices for label-free biosensing. Meanwhile, the planewave coupled, multimode fiber and fiber sidewall SPR counterparts are extensively employed for label-free biosensing. In this paper, we report the design, fabrication and characterization of a plasmonic crystal cavity on a SMF end facet, which shows high performance label-free sensing capability that comes from a steep cavity resonance near the plasmonic bandedge. The experimental figure-of-merit is 68 RIU^-1, which is over twenty times improvement to previous reports. The refractive index detection limit is 3.5*10^-6 RIU at 1 s integration time. We also describe a novel glue-and-strip process to transfer gold nano structures onto fiber end facets.

Reproducible Ultrahigh Electromagnetic SERS Enhancement in Nanosphere-Plane Junctions

Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in nanoscale hotspots has been placed great hopes upon for identification of minimum chemical traces and in-situ investigation of single molecule structures and dynamics. However, previous work consists of either irreproducible enhancement factors (EF) from random aggregates, or moderate EFs despite better reproducibility. Consequently, systematic study of SERS at the single and few molecules level is still very limited, and the promised applications are far from being realized. Here we report EFs as high as the most intense hotspots in previous work yet achieved in a reproducible and well controlled manner, that is, electromagnetic EFs (EMEF) of 10^9~10 with an error down to 10^+/-0.08 from gold nanospheres on atomically flat gold planes under radially polarized (RP) laser excitation. In addition, our experiment reveals the EF's unexpected nonlinearity under as low as hundreds of nanowatts of laser power.

Angle structures and hyperbolic $3$-manifolds with totally geodesic boundary

This notes explores angle structures on ideally triangulated compact $3$-manifolds with high genus boundary. We show that the existence of angle structures implies the existence of a hyperbolic metric with totally geodesic boundary, and conversely each hyperbolic $3$-manifold with totally geodesic boundary has an ideal triangulation that admits angle structures.

Volume and rigidity of hyperbolic polyhedral $3$-manifolds

We investigate the rigidity of hyperbolic cone metrics on $3$-manifolds which are isometric gluing of ideal and hyper-ideal tetrahedra in hyperbolic spaces. These metrics will be called ideal and hyper-ideal hyperbolic polyhedral metrics. It is shown that a hyper-ideal hyperbolic polyhedral metric is determined up to isometry by its curvature and a decorated ideal hyperbolic polyhedral metric is determined up to isometry and change of decorations by its curvature. The main tool used in the proof is the Fenchel dual of the volume function.

Generation of Diffraction-Free Optical Beams Using Wrinkled Membranes

We report the first demonstration of wrinkled membranes as a kind of optical focusing devices, which are low cost, light weight and flexible. Our device consists of concentric wrinkle rings on a gold-PDMS bilayer membrane, which converts collimated illuminations to diffraction-free focused beams. Beam diameters of 300-400 μm have been observed in the visible range. By comparing the theoretically calculated and experimentally measured focal spot profiles, we predict a focal spot size as small as around 50 μm if fabrication eccentricity can be eliminated.

The skein algebra of arcs and links and the decorated Teichmüller space

We define an associative algebra AS_h(S) generated by framed arcs and links over a punctured surface S which is a quantization of the Poisson algebra C(S) of arcs and curves on S. We then construct a Poisson algebra homomorphism from C(S) to the space of smooth functions on the decorated Teichmuller space endowed with the Weil-Petersson Poisson structure. The construction relies on a collection of geodesic lengths identities in hyperbolic geometry which generalize Penner's Ptolemy relation, the trace identities and Wolpert's cosine formula. As a consequence, we derive an explicit formula for the geodesic lengths functions in terms of the edge lengths of an ideally triangulated decorated hyperbolic surface.

A deformation of Penner's simplicial coordinate

We produce a one-parameter family of coordinates $\{Ψ_h\}_{h\in\mathbb{R}}$ of the decorated Teichmüller space of an ideally triangulated punctured surface $(S,T)$ with negative Euler characteristic, which is a deformation of Penner's simplicial coordinate \cite{P1}. If $h\geqslant0$, the decorated Teichmüller space in the $Ψ_h$ coordinate becomes an explicit convex polytope $P(T)$ independent of $h$, and if $h<0$, the decorated Teichmüller space becomes an explicit bounded convex polytope $P_h(T)$ so that $P_h(T)\subset P_{h'}(T)$ if $h<h'$. As a consequence, Bowditch-Epstein and Penner's cell decomposition of the decorated Teichmüller space is reproduced.

A Batalin-Vilkovisky Algebra structure on the Hochschild Cohomology of Truncated Polynomials

The main result of this paper is to calculate the Batalin-Vilkovisky structure of $HH^*(C^*(\mathbf{K}P^n;R);C^*(\mathbf{K}P^n;R))$ for $ \mathbf{K}=\mathbb{C}$ and $\mathbb{H}$, and $R=\mathbb{Z}$ and any field; and shows that in the special case when $M=\mathbb{C}P^1=S^2$, and $R=\mathbb{Z}$, this structure can not be identified with the BV-structure of $\mathbb{H}_*(LS^2;\mathbb{Z})$ computed by Luc Memichi in \cite{menichi2}. However, the induced Gerstenhaber structures are still identified in this case. Moreover, according to a recent work of Y.Felix and J.Thomas \cite{felix--thomas}, the main result of the present paper eventually calculates the BV-structure of the rational loop homology, $\mathbb{H}_*(L\mathbb{C}P^n;\mathbb{Q})$ and $\mathbb{H}_*(L\mathbb{H}P^n;\mathbb{Q})$, of projective spaces.

On the Hyperbolic Gluing Equations and Representations of Fundamental Groups of Closed 3-Manifolds

We show that for a representation of the fundamental group of a triangulated closed 3-manifold (not necessarily hyperbolic) into $\PSL$ so that any edge loop has non-trivial image under the representation, there exist uncountably many solutions to the hyperbolic gluing equation whose associated representations are conjugate to the given representation, and whose volumes are equal to the volume of the given representation.

Thurston's Spinning Construction and Solutions to the Hyperbolic Gluing Equations for Closed Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds

We show that the hyperbolic structure on a closed, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifold can be constructed from a solution to the hyperbolic gluing equations using any triangulation with essential edges. The key ingredients in the proof are Thurston's spinning construction and a volume rigidity result attributed by Dunfield to Thurston, Gromov and Goldman. As an application, we show that this gives a new algorithm to detect hyperbolic structures on closed 3-manifolds.
