Circular spherical divisors and their contact topology

This paper investigates the symplectic and contact topology associated to circular spherical divisors. We classify, up to toric equivalence, all concave circular spherical divisors $ D $ that can be embedded symplectically into a closed symplectic 4-manifold and show they are all realized as symplectic log Calabi-Yau pairs if their complements are minimal. We then determine the Stein fillability and rational homology type of all minimal symplectic fillings for the boundary torus bundles of such $D$. When $ D $ is anticanonical and convex, we give explicit betti number bounds for Stein fillings of its boundary contact torus bundle.

Classical, semi-classical and quantum optical models for x-ray planar cavity with electronic resonance

Here two theoretical models of semi-classical matrix and quantum Green's function are developed for the system of x-ray thin-film planar cavity with inner-shell electronic resonances. The semi-classical model is based on the matrix formalism to treat each layer as the propagating matrix. The crucial idea is to expand the propagating matrix of the resonant atomic layer under ultrathin-film approximation, then derive the analytical expression of the spectral observation, i.e, the cavity reflectance. The typical cavity effects of cavity enhanced decay rate, cavity induced energy shift and the Fano interference which were observed in the recent experiments could be phenomenologically interpreted. The second quantum model employs the analytical Green's function to solve the cavity system. The system Hamiltonian and the effective energy-level are derived. The effective energy-level scheme indicates that the cavity effect acts on the regulation of the intermediated core-hole state. To test the validity of the semi-classical matrix and quantum Green's function models, the classical Parratt's formalism and the dispersion correction of the atomic refractive index are also recalled. Very good agreements in reflectivity spectra between semi-classical and quantum models with the Parratt's results are observed. The present semi-classical matrix and quantum Green's function models will be useful to predict the new phenomena and optimize the cavity structures for future experiments and promote the emerging of quantum optical effects with modern x-ray spectroscopy techniques.

Enumerative aspect of symplectic log Calabi-Yau divisors and almost toric fibrations

In this paper we are interested in the isotopy classes of symplectic log Calabi-Yau divisors in a fixed symplectic rational surface. We give several equivalent definitions and prove the stability, finiteness and rigidity results. Motivated by the problem of counting toric actions, we obtain a general counting formula of symplectic log Calabi-Yau divisors in a restrictive region of $c_1$-nef cone. A detailed count in the case of 2- and 3-point blow-ups of complex projective space for all symplectic forms is also given. In our framework the complexity of the combinatorics of analyzing Delzant polygons is reduced to the arrangement of homology classes. Then we study its relation with almost toric fibrations. We raise the problem of realizing all symplectic log Calabi-Yau divisors by some almost toric fibrations and verify it together with another conjecture of Symington in a special region.

Probing dissipation process via Fano resonance and collective effect in the X-ray cavity

In the absence of time-reversal symmetry, the asymmetric parameter q of the Fano resonance is extended into the complex space, where its trajectory can be utilized to investigate the decoherence process. By embedding the ensemble of M$\ddot{\rm{o}}$ssbauer nuclei in the thin-film planar cavity in this work, the trajectories of asymmetric parameter q are studied via the collective effect of the nuclear ensemble, which is regulated by the nuclear abundance and angle offset. Due to the diverse controllable methods of the collective resonant strength, there are different straight lines and arc-shape trajectories in the complex plane, in which the slopes and the radius can be respectively adjusted by the angle offset and nuclear abundance. It is demonstrated that the dissipation process can be suppressed equivalently by the strong energy exchange between the cavity and nuclear ensemble. The present results could enrich the behaviors of the asymmetric parameter q in the complex plane and would provide new possibility for the decoherence research through the thin-film planar cavity.

Local geometry of symplectic divisors with applications to contact torus bundles

In this note we study the contact geometry of symplectic divisors. We show the contact structure induced on the boundary of a divisor neighborhood is invariant under toric and interior blow-ups and blow-downs. We also construct an open book decomposition on the boundary of a concave divisor neighborhood and apply it to the study of universally tight contact structures of contact torus bundles.

The Kodaira dimension of contact 3-manifolds and geography of symplectic fillings

We introduce the Kodaira dimension of contact 3-manifolds and establish some basic properties. In particular, contact 3-manifolds with distinct Kodaria dimensions behave differently when it comes to the geography of various kinds of fillings. On the other hand, we also prove that, given any contact 3-manifold, there is a lower bound of $2χ+3σ$ for all its minimal symplectic fillings. This is motivated by the bound of Stipsicz for Stein fillings. Finally, we discuss various aspects of exact self cobordisms of fillable 3-manifolds.

Almost Kahler forms on rational 4-manifolds

We study Nakai-Moishezon type question and Donaldson's "tamed to compatible" question for almost complex structures on rational four manifolds. By extending Taubes' subvarieties--current--form technique to $J-$nef genus $0$ classes, we give affirmative answers of these two questions for all tamed almost complex structures on $S^2$ bundles over $S^2$ as well as for many geometrically interesting tamed almost complex structures on other rational four manifolds, including the del Pezzo ones.

J-holomorphic curves in a nef class

Taubes established fundamental properties of $J-$holomorphic subvarieties in dimension 4 in \cite{T1}. In this paper, we further investigate properties of reducible $J-$holomorphic subvarieties. We offer an upper bound of the total genus of a subvariety when the class of the subvariety is $J-$nef. For a spherical class, it has particularly strong consequences. It is shown that, for any tamed $J$, each irreducible component is a smooth rational curve. We also completely classify configurations of maximal dimension. To prove these results we treat subvarieties as weighted graphs and introduce several combinatorial moves.

Topolgical Charged Black Holes in Generalized Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

As a candidate of quantum gravity in ultrahigh energy, the $(3+1)$-dimensional Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity with critical exponent $z\ne 1$, indicates anisotropy between time and space at short distance. In the paper, we investigate the most general $z=d$ Hořava-Lifshitz gravity in arbitrary spatial dimension $d$, with a generic dynamical Ricci flow parameter $λ$ and a detailed balance violation parameter $ε$. In arbitrary dimensional generalized HL$_{d+1}$ gravity with $z\ge d$ at long distance, we study the topological neutral black hole solutions with general $λ$ in $z=d$ HL$_{d+1}$, as well as the topological charged black holes with $λ=1$ in $z=d$ HL$_{d+1}$. The HL gravity in the Lagrangian formulation is adopted, while in the Hamiltonian formulation, it reduces to Dirac$-$De Witt's canonical gravity with $λ=1$. In particular, the topological charged black holes in $z=5$ HL$_6$, $z=4$ HL$_5$, $z=3,4$ HL$_4$ and $z=2$ HL$_3$ with $λ=1$ are solved. Their asymptotical behaviors near the infinite boundary and near the horizon are explored respectively. We also study the behavior of the topological black holes in the $(d+1)$-dimensional HL gravity with $U(1)$ gauge field in the zero temperature limit and finite temperature limit, respectively. Thermodynamics of the topological charged black holes with $λ=1$, including temperature, entropy, heat capacity, and free energy are evaluated.

Stability and Existence of Surfaces in Symplectic 4-Manifolds with $b^+=1$

We establish various stability results for symplectic surfaces in symplectic $4-$manifolds with $b^+=1$. These results are then applied to prove the existence of representatives of Lagrangian ADE-configurations as well as to classify negative symplectic spheres in symplectic $4-$manifolds with $κ=-\infty$. This involves the explicit construction of spheres in rational manifolds via a new construction technique called the tilted transport.

Symplectic Divisorial Capping in Dimension 4

We investigate the notion of symplectic divisorial compactification for symplectic 4-manifolds with either convex or concave type boundary. This is motivated by the notion of compactifying divisors for open algebraic surfaces. We give a sufficient and necessary criterion, which is simple and also works in higher dimensions, to determine whether an arbitrarily small concave/convex neighborhood exist for an $ω$-orthogonal symplectic divisor (a symplectic plumbing). If deformation of symplectic form is allowed, we show that a symplectic divisor has either a concave or convex neighborhood whenever the symplectic form is exact on the boundary of its plumbing. As an application, we classify symplectic compactifying divisors having finite boundary fundamental group. We also obtain a finiteness result of fillings when the boundary can be capped by a symplectic divisor with finite boundary fundamental group.

Relative Ruan and Gromov-Taubes Invariants of Symplectic 4-Manifolds

We define relative Ruan invariants that count embedded connected symplectic submanifolds which contact a fixed stable symplectic hypersurface V in a symplectic 4-manifold (X,w) at prescribed points with prescribed contact orders (in addition to insertions on X\V) for stable V. We obtain invariants of the deformation class of (X,V,w). Two large issues must be tackled to define such invariants: (1) Curves lying in the hypersurface V and (2) genericity results for almost complex structures constrained to make V pseudo-holomorphic (or almost complex). Moreover, these invariants are refined to take into account rim tori decompositions. In the latter part of the paper, we extend the definition to disconnected submanifolds and construct relative Gromov-Taubes invariants.

Spherical Lagrangians via ball packings and symplectic cutting

In this paper we prove the connectedness of symplectic ball packings in the complement of a spherical Lagrangian, S^2 or RP^2, in symplectic manifolds that are rational or ruled. Via a symplectic cutting construction this is a natural extension of McDuff's connectedness of ball packings in other settings and this result has applications to several different questions: smooth knotting and unknottedness results for spherical Lagrangians, the transitivity of the action of the symplectic Torelli group, classifying Lagrangian isotopy classes in the presence of knotting, and detecting Floer-theoretically essential Lagrangian tori in the del Pezzo surfaces.

Almost Kähler structures on four dimensional unimodular Lie algebras

Let $J$ be an almost complex structure on a 4-dimensional and unimodular Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. We show that there exists a symplectic form taming $J$ if and only if there is a symplectic form compatible with $J$. We also introduce groups $H^+_J(\mathfrak{g})$ and $H^-_J(\mathfrak{g})$ as the subgroups of the Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology classes which can be represented by $J$-invariant, respectively $J$-anti-invariant, 2-forms on $\mathfrak{g}$. and we prove a cohomological $J-$decomposition theorem following \cite{DLZ}: $H^2(\mathfrak{g})=H^+_J(\mathfrak{g})\oplus H^-_J(\mathfrak{g})$. We discover that tameness of $J$ can be characterized in terms of the dimension of $H^{\pm}_J(\mathfrak{g})$, just as in the complex surface case. We also describe the tamed and compatible symplectic cones respectively. Finally, two applications to homogeneous $J$ on 4-manifolds are obtained.

Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations from Einstein Gravity with Chern-Simons Term

In (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic systems with broken parity, the shear and bulk viscosity is joined by the Hall viscosity and curl viscosity. The dual holographic model has been constructed by coupling a pseudo scalar to the gravitational Chern-Simons term in (3+1)-dimensional bulk gravity. In this paper, we investigate the non-relativistic fluid with Hall viscosity and curl viscosity living on a finite radial cutoff surface in the bulk. Employing the non-relativistic hydrodynamic expansion method, we obtain the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Hall viscosity and curl viscosity. Unlike the shear viscosity, the ratio of the Hall viscosity over entropy density is found to be cutoff scale dependent, and it tends to zero when the cutoff surface approaches to the horizon of the background spacetime.

Virtual Betti numbers and virtual symplecticity of 4-dimensional mapping tori

In this note, we compute the virtual first Betti numbers of 4-manifolds fibering over $S^1$ with prime fiber. As an application, we show that if such a manifold is symplectic with nonpositive Kodaira dimension, then the fiber itself is a sphere or torus bundle over $S^1$. In a different direction, we prove that if the 3-dimensional fiber of such a 4-manifold is virtually fibered then the 4-manifold is virtually symplectic unless its virtual first Betti number is 1.

Lagrangian spheres, symplectic surfaces and the symplectic mapping class group

Given a Lagrangian sphere in a symplectic 4-manifold $(M, ω)$ with $b^+=1$, we find embedded symplectic surfaces intersecting it minimally. When the Kodaira dimension $κ$ of $(M, ω)$ is $-\infty$, this minimal intersection property turns out to be very powerful for both the uniqueness and existence problems of Lagrangian spheres. On the uniqueness side, for a symplectic rational manifold and any class which is not characteristic and ternary, we show that homologous Lagrangian spheres are smoothly isotopic, and when the Euler number is less than 8, we generalize Hind and Evans' Hamiltonian uniqueness in the monotone case. On the existence side, when $κ=-\infty$, we give a characterization of classes represented by Lagrangian spheres, which enables us to describe the non-Torelli part of the symplectic mapping class group.

On the J-anti-invariant cohomology of almost complex 4-manifolds

For a compact almost complex 4-manifold $(M,J)$, we study the subgroups $H^{\pm}_J$ of $H^2(M, \mathbb{R})$ consisting of cohomology classes representable by $J$-invariant, respectively, $J$-anti-invariant 2-forms. If $b^+ =1$, we show that for generic almost complex structures on $M$, the subgroup $H^-_J$ is trivial. Computations of the subgroups and their dimensions $h^{\pm}_J$ are obtained for almost complex structures related to integrable ones. We also prove semi-continuity properties for $h^{\pm}_J$.

preprint2011arXiv

Symplectic forms and cohomology decomposition of almost complex 4-manifolds

For any compact almost complex manifold $(M,J)$, the last two authors defined two subgroups $H_J^+(M)$, $H_J^-(M)$ of the degree 2 real de Rham cohomology group $H^2(M, \mathbb{R})$ in arXiv:0708.2520. These are the sets of cohomology classes which can be represented by $J$-invariant, respectively, $J$-anti-invariant real $2-$forms. In this note, it is shown that in dimension 4 these subgroups induce a cohomology decomposition of $H^2(M, \mathbb{R})$. This is a specifically 4-dimensional result, as it follows from a recent work of Fino and Tomassini. Some estimates for the dimensions of these groups are also established when the almost complex structure is tamed by a symplectic form and an equivalent formulation for a question of Donaldson is given.

Symplectic forms and surfaces of negative square

We introduce an analogue of the inflation technique of Lalonde-McDuff, allowing us to obtain new symplectic forms from symplectic surfaces of negative self-intersection in symplectic four-manifolds. We consider the implications of this construction for the symplectic cones of Kähler surfaces, proving along the way a result which can be used to simplify the intersections of distinct pseudoholomorphic curves via a perturbation.

Geography of symplectic 4-manifolds with Kodaira dimension one

The geography problem is usually stated for simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds. When the first cohomology is nontrivial, however, one can restate the problem taking into account how close the symplectic manifold is to satisfying the conclusion of the Hard Lefschetz Theorem, which is measured by a nonnegative integer called the degeneracy. In this paper we include the degeneracy as an extra parameter in the geography problem and show how to fill out the geography of symplectic 4-manifolds with Kodaira dimension 1 for all admissible triples.
