A note on the Gauss-Manin connection for abelian schemes

We study differential forms on the universal vector extension $A^\natural$ of an abelian scheme $A$ in characteristic zero, and derive a new construction of the $D$-group scheme structure on $A^\natural$. This gives, in particular, a rather simple description of the Gauss--Manin connection on the de Rham cohomology of $A$ in terms of global algebraic differential forms on $A^\natural$. The key ingredient is the computation of the coherent cohomology of $A^{\natural}$, due to Coleman and Laumon.

Higher Ramanujan equations and periods of abelian varieties

We describe higher dimensional generalizations of Ramanujan's classical differential relations satisfied by the Eisenstein series $E_2$, $E_4$, $E_6$. Such "higher Ramanujan equations" are given geometrically in terms of vector fields living on certain moduli stacks classifying abelian schemes equipped with suitable frames of their first de Rham cohomology. These vector fields are canonically constructed by means of the Gauss-Manin connection and the Kodaira-Spencer isomorphism. Using Mumford's theory of degenerating families of abelian varieties, we construct remarkable solutions of these differential equations generalizing $(E_2,E_4,E_6)$, which are also shown to be defined over $\mathbf{Z}$. This geometric framework taking account of integrality issues is mainly motivated by questions in Transcendental Number Theory regarding an extension of Nesterenko's celebrated theorem on the algebraic independence of values of Eisenstein series. In this direction, we discuss the precise relation between periods of abelian varieties and the values of the above referred solutions of the higher Ramanujan equations, thereby linking the study of such differential equations to Grothendieck's Period Conjecture. Working in the complex analytic category, we prove "functional" transcendence results, such as the Zariski-density of every leaf of the holomorphic foliation induced by the higher Ramanujan equations.

Towards algebraic iterated integrals on elliptic curves via the universal vectorial extension

For an elliptic curve $E$ defined over a field $k\subset \mathbb C$, we study iterated path integrals of logarithmic differential forms on $E^\dagger$, the universal vectorial extension of $E$. These are generalizations of the classical periods and quasi-periods of $E$, and are closely related to multiple elliptic polylogarithms and elliptic multiple zeta values. Moreover, if $k$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb Q$, then these iterated integrals along paths between $k$-rational points are periods in the sense of Kontsevich--Zagier.

Higher Ramanujan equations I: moduli stacks of abelian varieties and higher Ramanujan vector fields

We describe a higher dimensional generalization of Ramanujan's differential equations satisfied by the Eisenstein series $E_2$, $E_4$, and $E_6$. This will be obtained geometrically as follows. For every integer $g\ge 1$, we construct a moduli stack $\mathcal{B}_g$ over $\mathbf{Z}$ classifying principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ equipped with a suitable additional structure: a symplectic-Hodge basis of its first algebraic de Rham cohomology. We prove that $\mathcal{B}_g$ is a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack over $\mathbf{Z}$ of relative dimension $2g^2 + g$ and that $\mathcal{B}_g\otimes \mathbf{Z}[1/2]$ is representable by a smooth quasi-projective scheme over $\mathbf{Z}[1/2]$. Our main result is a description of the tangent bundle $T_{\mathcal{B}_g/\mathbf{Z}}$ in terms of the cohomology of the universal abelian scheme over the moduli stack of principally polarized abelian varieties $\mathcal{A}_g$. We derive from this description a family of $g(g+1)/2$ commuting vector fields $(v_{ij})_{1\le i \le j \le g}$ on $\mathcal{B}_g$; these are the higher Ramanujan vector fields. In the case $g=1$, we show that $v_{11}$ coincides with the vector field associated to the classical Ramanujan equations. This geometric framework taking account of integrality issues is mainly motivated by questions in transcendental number theory. In the upcoming second part of this work, we shall relate the values of a particular analytic solution to the differential equations defined by $v_{ij}$ with Grothendieck's periods conjecture on abelian varieties.
