A Note on Poly-Instanton Effects in Type IIB Orientifolds on Calabi-Yau Threefolds

The zero mode structure for the generation of poly-instanton corrections for Euclidian D3-branes wrapping complex surfaces in Type IIB orientifolds with O7- and O3-planes is analyzed. Working examples of such surfaces and explicit embeddings into compact Calabi-Yau threefolds are presented, with special emphasis on geometries capable of realizing the LARGE volume scenario.

Moduli Stabilization and Inflationary Cosmology with Poly-Instantons in Type IIB Orientifolds

Equipped with concrete examples of Type IIB orientifolds featuring poly-instanton corrections to the superpotential, the effects on moduli stabilization and inflationary cosmology are analyzed. Working in the framework of the LARGE volume scenario, the Kaehler modulus related to the size of the four-cycle supporting the poly-instanton contributes sub-dominantly to the scalar potential. It is shown that this Kaehler modulus gets stabilized and, by displacing it from its minimum, can play the role of an inflaton. Subsequent cosmological implications are discussed and compared to experimental data.

Computational Tools for Cohomology of Toric Varieties

In this review, novel non-standard techniques for the computation of cohomology classes on toric varieties are summarized. After an introduction of the basic definitions and properties of toric geometry, we discuss a specific computational algorithm for the determination of the dimension of line-bundle valued cohomology groups on toric varieties. Applications to the computation of chiral massless matter spectra in string compactifications are discussed and, using the software package cohomCalg, its utility is highlighted on a new target space dual pair of (0,2) heterotic string models.

Landscape Study of Target Space Duality of (0,2) Heterotic String Models

In the framework of (0,2) gauged linear sigma models, we systematically generate sets of perturbatively dual heterotic string compactifications. This target space duality is first derived in non-geometric phases and then translated to the level of GLSMs and its geometric phases. In a landscape analysis, we compare the massless chiral spectra and the dimensions of the moduli spaces. Our study includes geometries given by complete intersections of hypersurfaces in toric varieties equipped with SU(n) vector bundles defined via the monad construction.

Target Space Dualities of Heterotic Grand Unified Theories

In this article we summarize and extend the ideas and investigations on so called target space dualities of heterotic models with (0,2) worldsheet supersymmetry as they were partly presented on the String-Math 2011 conference. After the generic description of the duality, we give some novel examples involving vector bundles that are not deformations of the tangent bundle but more generic ones corresponding to SO(10) and SU(5) gauge theories in four dimensions. We show explicitly that the necessary conditions for a duality also hold for compactifications of this kind. Finally we will present the results of the large landscape scan of E_6 models.

Cohomology of Line Bundles: Applications

Massless modes of both heterotic and Type II string compactifications on compact manifolds are determined by vector bundle valued cohomology classes. Various applications of our recent algorithm for the computation of line bundle valued cohomology classes over toric varieties are presented. For the heterotic string, the prime examples are so-called monad constructions on Calabi-Yau manifolds. In the context of Type II orientifolds, one often needs to compute equivariant cohomology for line bundles, necessitating us to generalize our algorithm to this case. Moreover, we exemplify that the different terms in Batyrev's formula and its generalizations can be given a one-to-one cohomological interpretation. This paper is considered the third in the row of arXiv:1003.5217 and arXiv:1006.2392.

Yang-Mills Equations of Motion for the Higgs Sector of SU(3)-Equivariant Quiver Gauge Theories

We consider SU(3)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory on spaces of the form R x SU(3)/H, with H equals either SU(2) x U(1) or U(1) x U(1). For the corresponding quiver gauge theory we derive the equations of motion and construct some specific solutions for the Higgs fields using different gauge groups. Specifically we choose the gauge groups U(6) and U(8) for the space R x CP^2 as well as the gauge group U(3) for the space R x SU(3)/U(1)xU(1), and derive Yang-Mills equations for the latter one using a spin connection endowed with a non-vanishing torsion. We find that a specific value for the torsion is necessary in order to obtain non-trivial solutions of Yang-Mills equations. Finally, we take the space R x CP^1 x CP^2 and derive the equations of motion for the Higgs sector for a U(3m+3) gauge theory.
