The end of the nucleon-spin crisis

The small fraction of the quark polarization of the nucleon obtained in deep inelastic lepton scattering is a consequence of a wrong assumption on the flux of polarized virtual photons in the analysis of the data. The true flux of polarized photons is due to fluctuations into strongly interacting quark-antiquarks at least 20\% smaller than assumed and, therefore, the quark polarization is larger. Realizing this peculiarity the quark polarization agrees with that given by the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule, i.e. is consistent with the prediction derived from the experimentally determined weak coupling constants. It also solves the problem with the under-exhaustion of the fundamental Bjorken-sum rule. However, it has to be realized that the fluctuations render it impossible to measure the quark spin with credibility.

Some issues concerning the proton charge radius puzzle

An explanation of the difference of the charge radius of the proton as determined from the Lamb shift in electronic hydrogen and from elastic electron scattering off the proton on the one side and the recent high precision determination with muonic hydrogen on the other side is presented. It is shown that the modification of the 2S1/22S_{1/2} and 2P3/22P_{3/2} wave functions by the "Uehling potential" yields a correction to the theoretical Lamb shift of δ(ΔELamb)=0.302δ(ΔE_{\textrm{Lamb}}) = 0.302 meV which has to be compared to δ(ΔELamb)=0.322(46)δ(ΔE_{\textrm{Lamb}}) = 0.322(46) meV equivalent to the stated radius difference. The explanation is based on the realization that the bound state wave functions modified by the external "Uehling potential" have to be propagated by the vacuum polarization propagator in order to give the correct leading order Lamb shift. It is argued that a conflicting relativistic calculation neglects this propagation aspect. The explanation demonstrates that the Lamb shift is dynamically induced through the QED vacuum polarization and is not only the result of a static external "Uehling potential" probed by a test charge.

The RMS Charge Radius of the Proton and Zemach Moments

On the basis of recent precise measurements of the electric form factor of the proton, the Zemach moments, needed as input parameters for the determination of the proton rms radius from the measurement of the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen, are calculated. It turns out that the new moments give an uncertainty as large as the presently stated error of the recent Lamb shift measurement of Pohl et al.. De Rujula's idea of a large Zemach moment in order to reconcile the five standard deviation discrepancy between the muonic Lamb shift determination and the result of electronic experiments is shown to be in clear contradiction with experiment. Alternative explanations are touched upon.

Coherent π^0 threshold production from the deuteron at Q^2 = 0.1 GeV^2/c^2

First data on coherent threshold π^0 electroproduction from the deuteron taken by the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron MAMI are presented. At a four-momentum transfer of q^2=-0.1 GeV^2/c^2 the full solid angle was covered up to a center-of-mass energy of 4 MeV above threshold. By means of a Rosenbluth separation the longitudinal threshold s wave multipole and an upper limit for the transverse threshold s wave multipole could be extracted and compared to predictions of Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory.

Neutral pion threshold production at Q^2=0.05 GeV^2/c^2 and Chiral Perturbation Theory

New data are presented on the p(e,e'p)π^0 reaction at threshold at a four-momentum transfer of Q^2=0.05 GeV^2/c^2. The data were taken with the three-spectrometer setup of the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The complete center of mass solid angle was covered up to a center of mass energy of 4 MeV above threshold. Combined with measurements at three different values of the virtual photon polarization ε, the structure functions σ_T, σ_L, σ_{TT}, and σ_{TL} are determined. The results are compared with calculations in Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory and with a phenomenological model. The measured cross section is significantly smaller than both predictions.
