Exclusive $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ production in high energy $pp$ and $p$Pb collisions

We present a formalism for determining the cross section for exclusive heavy vector meson production ($J/ψ, Υ$) as a function of rapidity, in both high energy proton-proton and proton-heavy ion collisions, at next-to-leading order in QCD. We compare and contrast the production in $pp$ and $p$Pb collisions and show how data for these processes can give information on the low $x$ gluon distribution of the proton and heavy ions at a range of different scales.

Mixed leptonic and hadronic corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon

Higher-order hadronic corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon have been evaluated including next-to-next-to-leading-order insertions of hadronic vacuum polarization and next-to-leading-order corrections to hadronic light-by-light scattering. This leaves a set of mixed leptonic and hadronic corrections in the form of double-bubble topologies as the only remaining hadronic effect at ${\mathcal O}(α^4)$. Here, we estimate these contributions by analyzing the respective cuts of the diagrams, suggesting that the impact is limited to $\lesssim 1\times 10^{-11}$ and thus negligible at the level of the final precision of the Fermilab $g-2$ experiment.

Predictions of exclusive $Υ$ photoproduction at the LHC and future colliders

The cross section for exclusive $Υ$ ultraperipheral photoproduction at present and future colliders is determined using the low $x$ gluon PDF extracted from an analysis of exclusive $J/ψ$ measurements performed at HERA and the LHC. Predictions are given at next-to-leading order in collinear factorisation over a wide $γp$ centre-of-mass energy range, calculated assuming the non-relativistic approximation for the $Υ$ wave function, and with skewing corrections incorporated.

The $g-2$ of charged leptons, $α(M_Z^2)$ and the hyperfine splitting of muonium

Following updates in the compilation of $e^+e^-\rightarrow{\rm hadrons}$ data, this work presents re-evaluations of the hadronic vacuum polarisation contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron ($a_e$), muon ($a_μ$) and tau lepton ($a_τ$), to the ground-state hyperfine splitting of muonium and also updates the hadronic contributions to the running of the QED coupling at the mass scale of the $Z$ boson, $α(M_Z^2)$. Combining the results for the hadronic vacuum polarisation contributions with recent updates for the hadronic light-by-light corrections, the electromagnetic and the weak contributions, the deviation between the measured value of $a_μ$ and its Standard Model prediction amounts to $Δa_μ = (28.02 \pm 7.37) \times 10^{-10}$, corresponding to a muon $g-2$ discrepancy of $3.8σ$.

Very low $x$ gluon density determined by LHCb exclusive $J/ψ$ data

The low $x$ behaviour of the gluon density $xg(x,μ^2)$ at scale $μ^2=2.4$ GeV$^2$ is determined using exclusive $J/ψ$ production data from HERA and LHCb within the framework of collinear factorisation at next-to-leading order (NLO). It is shown that in the interval $3\times 10^{-6} < x <10^{-3}$ the gluon distribution function grows as $xg(x,μ^2)\propto x^{-λ}$ with $λ=0.135\pm 0.006 $. The impact this experimental data will have for the global parton distribution function (PDF) analyses in this low $x$ domain is quantified. No indication in favour of parton density saturation is observed.

How to include exclusive $J/ψ$ production data in global PDF analyses

We compare the cross section for exclusive $J/ψ$ photoproduction calculated at NLO in the collinear factorization approach with HERA and LHCb data. Using the optimum scale formalism together with the subtraction of the low $k_t<Q_0$ contribution from the NLO coefficient function to avoid double counting we show that the existing global parton distribution functions (PDFs) are consistent with the data within their uncertainties. However, at low $x$ the uncertainties of the present global PDFs are large. On the other hand, the accuracy of the LHCb data are rather good. Therefore, these data provide the possibility to directly measure the gluon PDF over the very large interval of $x$, $10^{-6}<x<10^{-2}$, at a fixed low scale.

The strange and charm quark contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon from lattice QCD

We describe a new technique (published in Phys. Rev. D89 114501) to determine the contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon coming from the hadronic vacuum polarisation using lattice QCD. Our method uses Padé approximants to reconstruct the Adler function from its derivatives at $q^2=0$. These are obtained simply and accurately from time-moments of the vector current-current correlator at zero spatial momentum. We test the method using strange quark correlators calculated on MILC Collaboration's $n_f = 2+1+1$ HISQ ensembles at multiple values of the lattice spacing, multiple volumes and multiple light sea quark masses (including physical pion mass configurations). We find the (connected) contribution to the anomalous moment from the strange quark vacuum polarisation to be $a^s_μ=53.41(59)\times 10^{-10}$, and the contribution from charm quarks to be $a^c_μ=14.42(39)\times 10^{-10}$ - 1% accuracy is achieved for the strange quark contribution. The extension of our method to the light quark contribution and to that from the quark-line disconnected diagram is straightforward.

The Muon (g-2) Theory Value: Present and Future

This White Paper briefly reviews the present status of the muon (g-2) Standard-Model prediction. This value results in a 3 - 4 standard-deviation difference with the experimental result from Brookhaven E821. The present experimental uncertainty is $\pm 63 \times 10^{-11}$ (0.54~ppm), and the Standard-Model uncertainty is $\simeq \pm 49 \times 10^{-11}$. Fermilab experiment E989 has the goal to reduce the experimental error to $\pm 16 \times 10^{-11}$. Improvements in the Standard-Model value, which should be achieved between now and when the first results from Fermilab E989 could be available, should lead to a Standard-Model uncertainty of $\sim \,\pm 35 \times 10^{-11}$. These improvements would halve the uncertainty on the difference between experiment and theory, and should clarify whether the current difference points toward New Physics, or to a statistical fluctuation. At present, the (g-2) result is arguably the most compelling indicator of physics beyond the Standard Model and, at the very least, it represents a major constraint for speculative new theories such as supersymmetry, dark gauge bosons or extra dimensions.

Hadronic contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron and the hyperfine splitting of muonium

Motivated by recent progress of theory and experiment on the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron, a_e, we update the hadronic contributions to a_e. Using our up-to-date compilation of e^+ e^- \to hadrons data, we find the leading order hadronic contribution a_e^{had,LO,VP} = (1.866 \pm 0.010_{exp} \pm 0.005_{rad}) \cdot 10^{-12} and the next-to-leading order hadronic contribution a_e^{had,NLO,VP} = (- 0.2234 \pm 0.0012_{exp} \pm 0.0007_{rad}) \cdot 10^{-12}, where the first and second errors are from the error of the experimental data and the uncertainty in the treatment of radiative corrections, respectively. These values are compatible with earlier evaluations by other groups, but have significantly improved uncertainties due to the more precise input data used. We also update the leading order hadronic contribution to the ground state hyperfine splitting of muonium, obtaining Δν_{Mu}^{had,VP} = (232.68 \pm 1.25_{exp} \pm 0.72_{rad}) Hz. This value is consistent with the most precise evaluation in the literature and reduces its error by a factor of two.
